  • Is Nintendo LABO actually worth it, or is it just cardboard? Are the games fun once you build the Labo Variety Pack or are they boring? This is my overview and reaction to Nintendo Labo. Is it good or just a waste of money -Like/Comment/Subscribe/Share

I love that these take time, patience, and effort to build. In a society of instant gratification some people think kids can’t handle that. They absolutely can, and they can excel at it. This is a great way to bring technology and things like problem solving and engineering together. For younger kids this is a great way for parents to work with their kids and teach these skills. At the end they are encouraged to customize them and make them their own, and they get play with them. Then Toy Con garage is a whole new world of possibility.
It’s also a nice touch Nintendo shows how the technology works in the discover area, cool for them to learn (and me).

I'm going to ask for the Variety kit for my sixteenth birthday next month. I've already come up with several ideas for Toy-con garage including a Labolele (Cardboard Ukulele) On Thursday we had career day at our school and one of the teachers did a session about the ukulele and I really enjoyed it. Later that day I was thinking about what I would do since I don't think I would be able to get both Labo and a ukulele for my birthday and I wanted Labo for my birthday so I could save my money for later this year and beyond. Later, it hit me that I could make a ukulele with Labo. This morning I found out how the frets work with changing the notes so now I have a plan for making a Labolele after I get Labo for my birthday, I'll just have to figure out how to program aaaallll those notes, that'll keep new busy!

"Only Nintendo can sell Cardboard for 70-80$"
    "$80 for cardboard no thanks"
Well, you could get cardboard cheaper yourself.
    Print out the templates yourself.
    And cut them out yourself.
Since Labo sheets are bigger than normal printer paper, you need 4 paper sheet for each Labo sheet.
For the Variety pack (28 large sheets) you need to print, align, trace and cut 112 sheets.
Even more, if you count all the pieces.
And all the slits and holes.
    Good luck with that.
Or just few seconds, to pop them out.
So you are NOT paying for cardboard. But for the work you DON'T have to do.

When they say you’re paying 70 dollars, it’s not just the cardboard. $60 for the game, but the cardboard is $10.
You don’t need the software to build the toys if you already have instructions available, but you’ll need the software to....play the software.

A year later and its actually quite common to see it bundled up with the switch here/ I got my switch last week and labo came with it for free basically. Buying the switch without it didnt change the pricetag, it was just an added bonus. But the person had no idea it was bundled when I went to buy it (I knew from their online store), so its a good idea to check before you buy a switch

LABO is not my thing, but this is really a great video. My coworker is contemplating buying a Switch for his kids. I mentioned this LABO product to him, and it intrigued him. Your video does a great job explaining the products potential. I’m definitely sharing this video with him so he can see what Nintendo can do. Thanks for the work you put into your videos.

Thanks for making this Video, question, if I but this labo, is the game included? or should I purchase the game separately? I am curious which game is fit for a specific labo, is the mae written already when buying LABO? thanks for taking time answering my question, God bless more power.,

I’m 26 and have the VR kit and vehicle kit. Both well worth the money, and I definitely enjoyed putting them together, learning how they work inside, and then using them on a game. Will I play the games forever? Probably not but it’s worth it and I’ll play for awhile.

I got this as an adult for my wife for the piano alone. That may sound stupid, but there's a game she's been playing/obsessed with for almost 10 years called Deemo. She's played it many times through on mobile, and she got extremely excited to see it on the switch. So then I bought the switch version of Deemo, which happens to come with an extra songbook made exclusively for the toycon piano and cannot be played without it (though it's just a small selection of songs with the actual notes).

I completely agree I bought this for myself and loved building it and I think it's definitely for kid 9 and up as it does require a decent attention span. Also to give it credit as an 17 year old hoping and beginning to enter into the field of engineering I found the design and engineering aspect of this product is mind bogglingly intricate and it seems like a *ton* of hard and loving work went into the Nintendo brand cardboard I spent $70 on.

The building is the point! As you build it you wonder how it’s going to work, and when it’s done and you see it in action, it feels so much better because it makes sense and you got to see how each step actually made it work. I agree, kids prob shouldn’t sit down and do it on one shot. We did ours throughout days. And I think building it was the special part. The games are ok. Also, I’m about to start decorating it with my daughter and she is very excited about that part.

I've read that the new OLED isn't compatible with the Toy-con Piano. I'm curious to know why, when the piano will work even if you're holding the screen. Did they say that because of the fitment and visibility when docked on the piano? Or, you won't be able to run the Labo piano game in the OLED system at all? I'm curious because we're getting a Switch for our kid, I wanted the OLED but he wants the Labo's piano.

Wow! Whenever I saw this I thought "WTF??? Cardboard? 80 bucks???" but man, was I wrong. I don't have it and won't buy it, I'm 54 years old but after watching your video I'm really blown away by so much ingeniuity and all the possibilities in this kit. If I wasn't living alone, I would definitely get this for my kids or grand children! As a kid I spent lots of time with building stuff and wow, this Labo stuff is darn cool! Thanx for once again an awesome video, Wood!

I absolutely LOVE Labo! I built both the Variety Kit and the Robot Kit over one three or four day period. As you said, the most fun was in the building-watching my creation take shape over time. Once the building was done, the Variety Kit was way more fun to play with than the Robot, which seemed to be very limited game-wise. I particularly enjoyed the motor bike, not only the included tracks but also the ability to create my own tracks. I was a tad disappointed with how limited the choices were in Labo Garage, but that was probably because I had been hoping for a more robust visual coding environment-probably an unrealistic expectation.

I'm actually building this with my girlfriend, she likes creative stuff and I like tech and games.
This is sort of the perfect middle ground for the both of us.
I also thought it was sort of funny that the cardboard motorbike felt better than my racing wheel made of metal.
But yeah some of them are sort of games. Robot and Bike seems to have pretty much to do in their games.

You didn't mention the Garage part at all. I think that's the most important aspect of it, is creating your own interactive toy by programming inputs, conditions and outputs, which has a lot of potential for developing a kid's brain

  • @upass11

Definitely agree with you woods. Part of the charm is the building aspect, then after you can just enjoying it. Really is magic how it's just literally cardboard. Nintendo showed creativity with one.💎

Like yourself I love building things.
I haven't picked up LABO as yet (In the middle of moving house) though the one thing that did cross my mind was why Nintendo released LABO, and the simplest answer for me is this. LABO is the new Wii Sports. As you pointed out each kit shows of different features of the Switch (Some of which we weren't aware of) much akin to how Wii Sports showed off the motion control on the Wii.
I really have been wanting to buy it, if anything I want the Robo Kit. :D
HEre's hoping they release a 2 player set.
