    If you have issues with overheating of your amp and you dont want RF interference from a cooling fan, try putting rubber spacers on your mounting screws between amp and mounting surface. It will keep the amp away from surface allowing heat to dissipate all of the way around the amp. Mounting surface could insulate the bottom of the amp holding in heat and possibly damaging amp components.

    Use gain to adjust to keep your speakers from bottoming and keep subsonic off for 12s and larger. Turning that subsonic dial clockwise at all makes you lose low end output period. Subs are mostly meant to play low unless you’re using 8s or 10s. Then I could see turning it up a hair. Never had a problem in 35 years this way. Now, the low pass filter “features” the number it’s set at with more volume versus subsonic. Subsonic just cuts off below where it’s set at. But a slight roll off starts higher than where it’s set. Hope this helps. Oh, and Bass boost shouldn’t even be on amps period. Keep it off.

      It depends on the enclosure and sub. Subsonic protects the sub from over excursion at frequencies below the enclosures capability.

    The actual best setting for the subsonic/infrasonic filter is the one that limits ultra low frequency excursion to prevent damage. A side effect of this is that you are now drawing less current when playing those ultra low frequencies meaning less voltage drop and possibly more average power in your supply. This may lead to slightly higher dBSPL numbers but is unlikely to be noticed by most. I would recommend finding the frequency where the sub begins to unload and have crazy xmax and slowly turn up the volume until the sub begins to reach close to xmax but there's still power you can add. Then adjust the infrasonic/subsonic filter until the xmax drops then repeat with slightly more power until you reach max power and the sub is no longer exceeding xmax below tuning at whatever frequency was ideal to pick for your setup. If for sub for example is tuned to 35Hz and it will begin to exceed xmax at lets say 25Hz then you should probably have a filter setting around 25hz or so to cut off that low bass a bit so it doesn't damage your sub. It will also put less power into the coil at low frequencies so maybe you can get a touch more power in the higher frequencies that the sub can play leading to more dB.

    It is a sweep you need to play music and adjust the subsonic because if the sub is moving to much in relation the enclosure it would disrupt the air in the port reducing higher tone output. Some people dont know that it is the air in the port that vibrates and make sound. Especially if the sound have low and high tone.

    A lot of great info there! You got just about everything right. The subsonic filter comes into play ONLY if the amp receives frequencies that are below the lowest tone the sub can produce at 3db down. AND, the filter only comes into play IF there ARE frequencies present in the infrasonic range. Using a good signal generator should not produce any frequency other than what it is set to. If harmonics are being generated in the signal chain, then you have a problem. Another thing, what is the slope attenuation of that HPF (subsonic filter)? I bet it's no higher than 6db/oct. So, as you set the level up near your fundamental tone, it may be already sucking the level down! You want to be anal about this? Get an "O" scope and look at the waveform levels while you play with the filter. A subsonic filter shows it's colors when playing a warped LP on a home stereo. The subsonic cone movement in the woofer can be crazy bad!

      @@anglerandy573628hz is subs resonance fs. subs will play below the fs and also box frequency by around 6 to 8 hz. You need to be able to tune by ear. No vehicle and system are the same so I can't just say yeah set it to a certain frequency without hearing it. Start with the subsonic set to 30 hz, You'll need to turn up the volume where you think it's kind of loud but still sound clean. Turn the dial on the subsonic counter clockwise until you can hear that sweet spot. You'll end up with the subsonic set lower than your box tuning. Also Maybe this will help , the lpf (low pas filter) filters out the highs to the sub and the subsonic filter's out the lows.

  • @RodofAllTrades

    At about a half an octave below enclosure tuning, subwoofer output will begin to diminish. At just below tuning, the driver will begin to "unload", and excursion will increase. I personally recommend setting subsonic about one quarter of an octave to one half an octave below enclosure tuning. This will vary, depending on the slope of the subsonic filter being used. I am using a DSP which affords different slopes, or dB per octave. The steeper the slope, the lower you can set it without damaging your driver. Always remember that the lower in frequency you play, the driver will want to naturally move farther anyway. When making your adjustments, start out high, then work your way down, observing excursion and listening for mechanical distress. Cheers dude!

Without properly adjusting the subsonic the speaker cannot return to original position to throw again in time for the next hit. Most subsonic filters are just a high pass filter and on many amps there's no mention of the slope. If they had a super steep slope they'd be great for precision limiting, but I prefer leaving them off and controlling low frequency extension at the deck. If your setup is loudest at 45-50hz for spl purposes, a Subsonic filter is the quick way to chop out the frequencies you don't want sucking your power away. For SQ, leaving Subsonic filters off is best IMO.

  • @crx122
    @crx122 4 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    Why not set the subsonic filter CORRECTLY instead of just guessing on the analog knob? Many amps are not accurate on their markings and "eyeballing" it is totally wrong. First set your gain correctly, then set your low pass filter. To properly set yoir subsonic filter, do the following:
    1. Turn subsonic filter OFF by setting it all the way to the left at the lowest setting.
    2. Play sine wave of desired subsonic setting, for example 25hz.
    3. Using a multimeter take note of your voltage you have from your test tone.
    4. Multiply your voltage by .707. So if I saw 40 volts I would multiply it by. 707 giving me 28.28 volts.
    5. Turn up subsonic filter until you reach this voltage, subsonic is set.

      @@angelvip2474 That is another option yes, but my point being was that there are very easy methods to correctly set the subsonic filter without any expensive tools. Why 28.28?

    • @crx122
      @crx122 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@brian3364 28.28 just happened to be what the voltage would be in the example I gave. You pick a subsonic setting you are aiming for (25 hz is usually a safe bet if you want me to make it easy for you) and then find your baseline voltage reading you have with the subsonic filter turned all the way to the lowest setting. So I gave an example of 40 volts as a baseline reading, you'd play your 25hz test tone, or whatever frequency you are wanting your subsonic filter set to. With the subsonic filter set at the lowest setting (turned all the way to the left) you get your baseline reading. If for example you saw 40 volts then you would multiply that number by .707 giving you 28.28 volts in our example here. Turn the subsonic filter up until you reach that voltage and you are all set. It is quick and easy! Just make sure your subwoofer is disconnected while doing this! You don't want to potentially damage it blasting ultra low frequencies through it while you are setting the filter initially. Alot of people like to set their subsonic to 5hz below their box tuning, I personally have always just used 25hz and it works perfect. Your low pass filter can also be set using the same method of getting baseline voltage and multiplying by .707 as well, using an appropriate test tone. Only difference is the knob would be turned all the way to the right to start.

    Jacob makes a solid point, and the demonstration of it is nice to see. I feel that the emphasis should be placed on what we did not get to see: he set the gain after the process we saw, I can't help but think that it would have been a stronger finish to test the final result in the same way for total emphasis besides the drop in decibels post procedure. Many simpletons will take away from the clip that you can use the subsonic to get a bit more db but just don't keep it there. I have been one of them in my checkered past🙃

    It would be nice if instead of just giving you the highest and lowest setting numbers to have at least 3 points of the in between number like yours lowest is 10 highest is 50 there should be a 20-30-40. But eh I doubt they’ll listen. I just tune carefully and just rock 4inch coils. But I’m picking up my custom pair of Solo X 18 motors on 15 inch frames it’s a 3.5 coil but better then stock and my builder made them especially for what I play at 28-18 hz. Not a cheap pair of subs but worth it. Can’t wait till tomorrow afternoon!!! Update-subs still not ready a bolt snapped on one of them so it delayed the build on of of them. EH... there worth the wait!

    Subsonic should be set just below your port tune frequency. Any notes played on your subwoofer that are below port tune cause the box to unload and essentially your speaker will behave as if it is in free air. And that damages coils

    • @williamkillingsworth2619
      @williamkillingsworth2619 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On a ported box you set it near port tuning. Keeps the cone under control as the box will not below port tuning(unloadeding/free air). this can be found by doing a frequency sweep and seeing where the cone movement is the least that’s right around tuning that’s right around where you want your Hipas set. If you are not using enough power to exceed the drivers x max its not necessary but still recommend as more power will be utilized in the drivers usable range.
      On sealed enclosures, In vehicles with a high transfer function u can actually have too much low hz content and can use this to eq it out. I do this in my daily, sounds way better and gets louder cleaner.
