    Here is a very old Finnish traditional folk song called "Nuku Nuku Nurmilintu" our first Winter / Yule Special. Song is very old and there are versions of it already written in 1800 and a version closer to mine in 1890, thus Public Domain. There are many lovely versions around, it's such a beautiful tune in my opinion. The recording is very minimal, using only voice, harmonies, low whistle and kantele (national Finn music instrument) as the lead. I tried my best to pronounce well the words but I'm not native so my apologies if pronunciation is not 100% accurate with all my respect to Finn Heritage :). Song is a lullaby about a wag tail (Motacilla alba). Can you count how many scenes the bird appear in? Also as always a second eater egg is that as usual I hide (one or more) ratties in the video :) Pd all my three ratties had Finn names : Ritva, Tuula and Taika

    Just found this version of Nuku Nuku Nurmilintu, and this is the most beautiful one. My mom and grandma sang it when I was just a wee child, so listening this flung me back in time. Been listening this all day at work, your voice + perfectly pronounced finnish + lyrics (lullaby / mourning of a dead child) is a powerful combination! As a finn I appreciate you for bringing this song into the wider audience, and your effort of speaking finnish. Just SUPERB. It is said that J.R.R. Tolkien was inspired to create Quenyan from finnish, and listening your voice with kantele playing, and finnish lyrics, it is very ethereal and beautiful indeed.

      Thank you so much for this insightful and encouraging comment, specially coming from someone knowing the language. I tried my best to pronounce it as best as I could but obviously I'm a foreign, so sometimes you feel hesitant and it's very encouraging when people let you know they feel it's done with care and respect. I love the ancient knowledge and lore behind old traditional songs and have a special weak spot for lullabies. Yes indeed, Finn sounds very elven, and I thought the aesthetics kind of enhance that feeling

  • @GeeMyJoe

    Very beautilful version. :)
    Actually the song is not about a wag tail. It's a lullaby to "nurmilintu", wich can be translated as a grassbird, but there's no such bird. In the song nurmilintu is the baby that mother is trying to get fall asleep. It is old Finnish tradition to put at summertime a blanket to the grass yard in a shady place, maybe under a tree, and then put the child on to the blanket to get the daily nap. That's why in the song mother calls her baby to her grassbird.
    On the second line mother sings "Get tired, get tired wag tail", because real wag tails seems to jump tirelessly over the grass yard.
    On the second verse mother sings just about different birds. A bird brings a cotton shirt. The widgeon brings a good skirt. The merganser brings a little pillow. The swallow brings a pillow.
    Because the song is a lullaby, the actual meaning of the words wasn't so important. And mother could also made up more words while singing, until the child fall asleep.
    By the way, in the video it seems to be too cold to put the child sleep on the yard. The air and the ground must be quite warm to do that. More than 20°C (68°F).

    • @yidneth
      @yidneth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thsnk you for the thorough expanation. I know it is an old lullaby, I saw several old nursery rhymes snd found a book with the vastarakki along with it so I asdumed Tired tired vastarakki could also refer as metaphor to the child. I also found a few sadder references using this song as a mourning as they drift into a white land. I reinterpret only and I am a creature of the woods an animals, have no other children and loved the mossy pillow reference as outdoors, I do love a mossy pillow myself. Still I love your thorough comment and to have a deeper explanation origins of things makes me happy, also and as not native I could no grasp entirely which other birds were. Thank you so much. When I shared this I was given advice to check a fellow native singer Merja soria on youtube, she does such a lovely version just with her kantele and believe she has all the warmth I may lack. Loved hers, very earthy and warm. Mine was though made from the heart too. I know I have an accent too. And thanks once more, I love feedback that actually feedback that makes me know from it. I also have found all kinds of different versions and info, a sheet score dating 1800, info of a sung version en the 1890s... And I winder how old really is as this or previoys versions that nourished it. Blessings

      It is possible that the same song could be sometimes also used as a memorial song to buried child too. But today most people thinks this is a lullaby. This melody is very old Karelian melody, and it maight have many other usages too. No one knows the origin of it. This melody and rhythm are very same type as on Finnish national poem Kalevala. I can open Kalevala in any page and sing the poems with this melody. It is possible that some poem singers have use this exact melody to bypass Kaleva's poems to next generations. Other melodies are also possible, but the rhythm itself has been written to lyrics. Or maybe more singed than written, because scientist and doctor Elias Lönnrot was walking through the Karelian area listening and writing the poems down first time at 1835. Whatever the melody was to singing Kalevala poems, it was most likely based on a sound of minor chord tuned 5-string Kantele. Like this melody too.

    • @yidneth
      @yidneth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeeMyJoe once more thanks for all the information. It also gives me some I need for further research. I wish I had a 5 stringed kantele. I have a 10 and 21 but most learning tutorials I find for chord strumming are for five. th-cam.com/video/ke8qA6SjG9s/w-d-xo.html this is an early example of how kantele started to be part of my own original music. So I started to feel curiosity for the instrument (used also in Latvia as kokle). I am intrigued now by Konevitsan kirkonkellot but all i find is that its firsr recording is 1952 out of a karelian melody but i need to track a source older than 1920 so it is public domain so mostly interested in locating very very old recordings or scores. Thanks once more for the interesting info 💟❤

      Thank you for stopping by. I know I play it a bit unconventionally but I am from Spain and self taught. Thanks for stopping by, I havevwatched some of your lovely kantele performances. It inspires me to get better. I haveva 21 strings. It has two thicker bass strings and then 19 but I am unsure how to tune it. Now I am happy that even notbthe most proficient performer kantele is one layer in my signature sound. This was probably the first time I used it for an original composotion I wrote called "In the Mist" th-cam.com/video/ke8qA6SjG9s/w-d-xo.html" Will be stopping by your channel again, youtube knows I love kanteleand keeps on recommending ❤ happy new year

    • @TuomiOrava
      @TuomiOrava 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@yidneth that's a peculiar amount of strings with the 21. I personally play 15 stringed ones that I've made myself. I have plans to build 18 stringed ones with more bass strings (5 most likely). I personally tune my kanteles so that the 5th longest string (not counting the bass strings) is a D. And I tune the kantele to a natural D minor scale. that works the best for me. Maybe you can try something similar with your 21 string. It all depends on how long the strings are. I would not try forcing the 5th string into D if it gets too loose or tight. In that case, just find the most natural place for the D and extrapolate from that. Or if you use any other scale, then just replace the D with what ever is your root note.

    For me this is burial song. I wish someone would sing it for me after my death.

      It is indeed one of the interpretations of the song as "a lullaby" but I like to think it's also about the birdie :) that by the way is the guest of the video. Still for me it's a song of stillness and quietness, calm. Hope you liked me rendition. Blessings.

      I posted the lyrics translation to english on my site priscillahernandez.com/lyrics/nuku-nuku-nurmilintu-traditional-finnish-lullaby I'll try to ad subs to all videos in the channel eventually. And thanks for the lovely compliment :)
      Basically it's "sleep sleep little bird" the title :) and it meantions a wagtail which is the bird you see through the video

      @@yidneth Ah Found them. Just lovely. I am trying to put together a playlist of lullabies for my baby cousin who is half Russian is Russian, the Nordic languages, Gaelic, Welsh and English.

      @@cousinnobody3452 I compose lullabies myself :) some originals but here you'll find some traditionals, also among recent uploads I uploaded an icelandic, but warning, though the song is pretty it has then a dark story (and you should cut the second half of the video hahah XD) . I recently recorded the traditional Twinkle Twinkle little star that many ignore has a super long and compelling beautiful lyrics (longer than the traditional verse everyone sings). A russian lullaby is also on the way. Most of my channel is devoted to my own original songs and some geek fantasy covers, but from time to time I like to do traditionals with old lore behind them, and I have a weak spot myself for lullabies so expect more. Thanks for stopping by.

      @@a.v.j5664 I play some kantele and jouhikko and have a weak spot for ancient folk songs. I have also one in Latvian, more finn on the way. I makev my own original music too, but I love European folk music. Was done with utter respect. Best regards. Btw. I am from Spain. Curious fact there are 3 ratties hidden in the video and their names are Finn: Tuula, Ritva and Taika 🐭

      thanks so much for the compliment, I do love this song and lullabies in general, I think they carry a great weight of tradition and love. The day it was filmed was special I had some friends visiting and it was a perfect day between autumn and winter.
