How to install keyless entry in your Jeep Cherokee XJ

- In this video I show you how to add keyless entry to your Jeep cherokee XJ.

Wiring is as follows:
Red wire with fuze to Pink wire
Black wire to Black wire
Dark blue wire to Dark blue wire (unlock)
Green to Light Blue with Red Stripe (lock)

To program the remote just hold down the program button until it beeps and then press the lock button and then the unlock button and then let the unit beep and you are all set. Make sure you check your fuzes and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Just installed this today! Want to add my 2 cents for anyone like me who knows just enough to be dangerous :)
So, since I only needed 4 of the 6 wires, I tested my crimping skills on the other two.. a good idea, as long as you remember to cut that connection so it doesn't try to power itself.
In the event you do get a blown fuse, before you check the box in the passenger wheel well (where he showed the 25A fuse he needed to add) check the engine bay, there are some mini fuses, closest to the battery on the right hand side (if you're looking from the front of the car) is the 15A fuse that controls the gauges, radio, dome lights, power lock switches.. and coincidently the fuse I blew when I messed up :)
One other thing I don't remember if he mentioned outright, but always best to remove the negative terminal on the battery when installing this.
Overall a great little system, and super convenient to have!

Sir you’re a life saver. I think I did exactly what you did, and blew the same 15A fuse in the engine bay. Up and running now with remote lock!

Question, if you blew that fuse for the switch in the engine bay that control the power locks, would the switch on the door not work as well?
@@williamvanasek8237 Wow, it's been 10 months since I installed this already! So, I don't remember exactly what didn't work, but I am about 99% sure that it was a weird combination of things not working.. like locks.. or windows still worked, but the other didn't.. does that make sense? If you do blow that fuse, your dash will be gone, radio.. gone, windows and/or locks.. gone. but it's a really simple fix (at least it was on mine)
Thanks to the Bearded Jeeper! After a small issue with a fuse in the engine compartment near the battery, my remote lock system is working perfectly. Did this and worked great.
Also the black wire w red stripe on the jeep connector goes to the horn relay. I set the dip pin to the center for the horn function so now when you push the red panic button the horn sounds until you push the panic button again.

I tried this and can’t get the horn output to work. I connected the green wire (output #4) to the black wire with red stripe. I have a 1998 Cherokee sport. Is your cherokee newer? Any ideas?

Also the pin switch could be set to pulse, left, or on demand, right,.

I know this is a pretty old video but I just stumbled across your Reddit post about this. Will this work on the 1996 with the IR dome?
now to question to that.. after u done installed the new key entry board.. does it open all 4 doors and the back lift gate or just the 2 front door
It unlocked all of my doors and the gate
So looking at this video I’m not sure if it needs Installed under the steering wheel harness ? also the unlock and lock wires are lock is orange/purple and unlock is pink/ purple according to a diagram I have seen but yours is different ? I have a 98 xj rhd
Should just be in the same spot I installed it I would assume a 99 and 98 are about the same. Might have to play around a little bit

I hook this up to my Jeep, the module beeps and the key fobs work, but nothing happens to my door locks. It's not locking or unlocking .
Hmm did your door locks work before this? Maybe some of the wires are different depending on the year
I just installed this in my Cherokee, checked the wiring dozens of times now to ensure it is correct, and ensured the wires actually controlled the locks. For some reason, the transmitter isn't receiving the signal from the remote. Maybe I programmed it incorrectly? I am stumped.
@@redtoaster4859 yeah to me it sounds like either you didn’t program it right or the unit you got is a dud. Not really sure but I would try to reprogram it see if that helps

This is what i'm doing:
1. Hold program button wait for beeps
2. Press lock button on remote (transmitter beeps once), press unlock button on remote (transmitter beeps twice)
3. Hold program button wait for beeps
4. Press lock button on second remote (transmitter beeps once), press unlock button on second remote (transmitter beeps twice)
5. Wait for multiple beeps, red light turns off
I've bought two so far, and they both seem to have the same issue. They can't both be broken right?
Just to add, I've got a '95 Country with the old IR dome on the roof and that connector is where I am tapping into the wires.
@@redtoaster4859 hmm 🤔 seems like that should work it does nothing at all when you hit the button? Have you checked all your fuses?
Just installed this in my 98 and it worked as it should right after the installation. Fast forward a few hours the key fob no longer locks or unlocks the doors, but the drivers side door button will work as it should. The passenger window button now will not work, but it did before the install. And to make it even better the check engine light came on and a code reader will not pick up any codes.
Update: was able to pull code P0138, voltage for o2 sensor is too high so somehow I messed up the wiring because it only started after my “install” going to recheck my connections tomorrow.
Another update: I think the o2 sensor was a separate issue because check engine light went away. I put in the correct fuses because the previous owner had 30amp fuses in the 25amp locations, but passenger side controls still don’t work and the key fob still does not work.
@@evan_alexanderr it sounds like you most likely have a short in your door. The master switch in the passenger side may also be the issue
@@TayTayVideoGaming I’m going to order a new switch and check the wiring in the door and see if that fixes the issue
@@TayTayVideoGaming update: a new switch did not solve the issue, so I will check the wiring for breaks/ shorts next time I have a day off
So if I’m not mistaken, I’m not sure if I’m right or not but that 25 fuse is the top right on the panel? Or is it the top left?

Sorry for a dumb question but will this only work on XJs that came from the factory with power locks that just stopped working (as a replacement to the original system)? Is that why you installed this? Because I have a XJ that is a sport but has manual locks from the factory and would love to do this but I don’t have the same overhead lamp and I know for a fact the one I have does not have a plate above it to replace with that module and splice the wires together.
You would have to have power locks to begin with or there would be no motors going to the locks to lock and unlock them. You could get all the parts from a junkyard but might be too expensive and not worth it at that point
I have a 1999 xj that has factory keyless entry and a couple weeks ago my locks and horn would start going off on their own. Do you think replacing my factory unit with this unit would fix the problem? Thanks
Maybe… but I would find the cause of your problems first. May be a bad ground or pinched wire

I'm a couple years late to the show but does this have alarm capability? I have a 2000 XJ and I'm looking to add alarm to protect things like my trail GoPro and things.
Hey man no I don’t think it does just lock and unlock. You may be able to rig something up if your smarter than me but I’m not sure. If you do figure something out I would be interested to know. Thanks for watching

It’s wirred with 11 wired, you skip the otter 7, will the starter kill still work properly?

So you have a starter kill switch? it shouldn't affect that it is just for the door locks
@@TheBeardedJeeper yes correct I have, it’s standard in the Jeep. The switch is deactivated after opening the doors with the remote control.

Great Video, very easy to follow, i ordered kit but did not get the wires/3 and 4 pin connectors and having a heck of a time trying to find any locally, any suggestions on how to fabricate my own pin connectors so i can complete this project?
May be hard to find local. If they didn’t include them with the kit I would reach out to the company
i have a question to that device that u added to ur jeep... after u follow the instructions matching up the wires... does it unlock all doors and the hatchback or just the 2 door of the front and the hatchback? the other 2 wire that is being left out.... what are they for? im fixing to do mine due to my remote chips quit working!!!
Yes it will unlock all the doors and the hatch as well. It’s just like the factory key fob that came with some of the cherokees. The two wires I left out I believe they were for if you wanted to make it honk as you unlock the jeep but I’m not positive it’s been a while since I installed it.

I ran into the issue with the fuse as well, but once I fixed it and everything else was working fine, I took it for a drive and my blinkers won’t work. Could any of the non used wires have anything to do with it?
Aiden Hirsch your blinkers won’t work at all? Those wires shouldn’t affect it any. I think there is a separate fuse for the blinkers did you check that? Maybe you blew that fuse?
The Bearded Jeeper I went back and checked all of the fuses and there was a fuse in spot 13 which is a spare. Moved it to spot 12 and it works fine. I guess I put it back wrong when I was checking them last time. Thanks for the help though.

I found the box. And wired all wires exactly like you said. But now when I’m ready to program it the transmitter don’t want to beep or led light don’t want to light up . Please help if you have any idea
Jose Fuentes glad you found it was it in the same spot? Try checking to make sure your wires have a good connection and make sure the fuse is in tight somehow it’s not getting power

I have 99 XJ with factory keyless and one working fob. If I buy spare of Ebay, do you know if I can program if I have one working fob or do I have to take to the dealership?
Everything I have found unfortunately you have to take it to the dealership and they can set it up for you. I have seen people buy the factory keyless fobs and just bring them to the dealership but that can be expensive thats why I went this route. Thanks for watching and if you don't mind if you do go to the dealership I would love to know what they charge you to program it.
I know this is a video from over a year ago, but curious about the circuit board that was removed. Isn't that a remote entry circuit board already wired, and can't you just get a fob and program it rather than a whole kit?
that circuit board was for the factory key fob. If you don't have it you can find a factory key fob and have the jeep dealership program it for you but that would cost way more. this is a cheap alternative to having that and not all came with the keyless fob.
Two year old comment but I'm replacing my cherokee's remote keyless system with this one. I have the system in my car but it didn't come with the key fobs and since its a '95 it only uses infrared not the newer standard of radio frequency and trying to find a keyfob for less than 150 dollars to replace it is impossible so a drop in 40 dollar system is perfect

My back doors dont lock automatically with the masterlock button on the drivers side, dos this mean the remote thing wont work on those doors?
alex a I’m not 💯 sure to be honest. But I am guessing it won’t work if they don’t automatically work when you use the master lock. My guess is you have an issue somewhere in the system and you have to chase it down

I have a 2000 xj se (my dome light is different) that just has a square with no map lights. Therefore no circuit board; assuming this will not work? Anybody try?
Hmm I didn’t know some didn’t come without any circuit board up there. I’m not sure if this would work for you you would have to find a circuit that linked to the door locks
I've got a 1999 Jeep Cherokeee, we bought the same exact keyless entry unit and followed your video but nothing is working. We have no power to the keyless unit and the radio and tripmeter now do not have power and the overhead lights don't work. Any suggestions?
Also, power locks on doors only work to unlock, not lock.
Barrett Willingham check your fuses I had an issue with that when I installed mine. It was the one in the passenger side
Actually found a blown fuse in the box, not the panel. Everything seemed to work fine but now remote only works to lock, not unlock.
Barrett Willingham glad you got that fixed. Try re programming the remote that should help fix it. If that doesn’t work let me know I want to make sure you get it working
@@TheBeardedJeeper Finally got it working. I think it was a wiring splice issue on the unlock portion. Everything seems to be working fine, except the cigarette lighter but I can live with that. That's probably just a fuse somewhere if I cared enough to track it down. Thanks for the response and the video. Very helpful.

I don’t think it would work unless you have those wires up there

@@Darkmagician769 the wires go to the circuit board up there that controls the keyless entry. You can program a factory key fob but that’s expensive. If you have the circuit board up in your lights you should be able to make it work. This just replaces that
