Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell wrote this about how he suffered from a severe case of depression during his teenage years, rarely leaving the house. At one point, he spent a whole year without leaving his house, during which time he would play drums and guitar. Per songfacts : In 1994, Chris Cornell spoke to Melody Maker about creating the song and the meaning behind it. "'Fell On Black Days' was like this ongoing fear I've had for years. It took me a long time to write that song. We've tried to do three different versions with that title, and none of them have ever worked," he said. "It's a feeling that everyone gets. You're happy with your life, everything's going well, things are exciting - when all of a sudden you realize you're unhappy in the extreme, to the point of being really, really scared. There's no particular event you can pin the feeling down to, it's just that you realize one day that everything in your life is f--ked!"

Chris Cornell, my soul brother... I grew up with his words in my head, hard teen years, every word I could feel and relate to, especially his solo music. We he died I left work and drove a few hours to the sea staring out in night in the black and the black ocean. I saw a tiny little light out there,. Probably a ship. I imagined it was chris' soul sailing the black seas to beyond, I promised to myself and his memory it was time to turn around. I got myself sober and many things have happened for the better. RIP Chris, thank you brother, some day I'll get to tell you that, maybe we can jam in the great beyond.

Suffering people become artists for expressing what's inside them not to get famous. Fame was never meant to be the answer and what do you mean with "if someone has achieved this what else is there to achieve?" How about everything? Because fame only matters to those who give a damn about what others think about yourself....and basing you life around the opinions of others is the most toxic thing you can do. So a) the suffering of the artist hasn't changed and b) only those who do art for themselves and are genuine really reach people so naturally the succes won't change anything for them but the pressure rises because of more tempations on the one side and more duties on the other. Touring...management....business...make records with a deadline. Your hobby and passion is now a business and sometimes that kills everything. Including the artist.

    • @symphonyinkart
      @symphonyinkart 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yup. Always drives me nuts that. Im an artist, mainly paint and draw, but its an outlet i must do lol. I feel most at one with myself whe i do. So, i get that. All art forms are like this...heck, for some ppl its sport ?. But yes, artists tend to have colorful backgrounds lol.

I’d love to hear reactions to “Room A Thousand Years Wide”, “4th Of July”, “Slaves and Bulldozers”, “Spoonman”...I could go on for hours with amazing Soundgarden songs that would be great to hear reactions too and YES “The Day I Tried To Live” would be on the list!

Two songs by Pearl Jam that tslk about Eddie'd main psychological/emotioanl issue during his life: his father.
First do: Alive - live Pinkpop
The story of his discovery of it. The second half of the song is fantasy.
Then: Release - live Arena di Verona 2006
Super emotional song that they had wrote and he improvised at one of their first rehearsals.
Eddie grew up thinking his step father was his dad. And only came to find out about the truth once his dad (whom he thought a family friend he saw once or twice) died.

Cool, not sure if someone already posted this, but that version is actually performed live. It’s a great version, a little loose; but the actual album version has a very different and tight, almost alternative sound. It’s probably the one you should hear as it sounds amazing in headphones. Just a thought.

    • @obligatoryhandle
      @obligatoryhandle 5 ปีที่แล้ว

warlok9 I don't think the loose vibe does this song any favors. It lacks the muscle found on the studio session, which makes you feel the blackness. And the tightness you mention is important because this isn't one of Kim Thayil's longer solos. He does a lot in a short period to give the song color. Plus, this is obviously a strained vocal performance by Cornell. The album version is one of the best use of Cornell's at the time new-found low register, and he could still hit the high stuff clean.

Well, gee. You can't do Soundgarden without doing Mother Love Bone's Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns.
As backstory (A lot of this, if not all, was probably covered in the comments for Temple Of The Dog, Soundgarden and/or Pearl Jam): Mother Love Bone was an amazing band that existed to way too short of a time, due to Wood overdosing on heroin days before their debut album was to be released. At the time of his death, the common consensus was that they would be the Seattle band that would make it big. The people in the band, along with close friends, would go on to form the backbone of the Seattle grunge/rock scene.
    Connections:
Temple Of The Dog was a tribute album for Andrew Wood.
The Alice In Chains song "Would?" is about Wood.
Mother Love Bone members Jeff Amant and Stone Gossard would go on to form Pearl Jam.
Chris Cornell, the lead singer of Soundgarden, was Wood's roommate.

RIP Chris Cornell. 1991 San Diego. Mattalica opening act for Guns and Roses. The lead singer got burned from fireworks display and cancelled. We got SoundGarden instead to open for GNR .. RIP Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. Chris one of the absolute greatest voices ever. Layne Staley losing him was a crushing blow for his fans.

Of all the #Seattle bands, #Soundgarden to me created the darkest music. Darker than Alice in Chain, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, even #MotherLoveBone. The guys from Pearl Jam came out of Mother Love Bone.
May I suggest the next full album review. #Superunknown by yes, Soundgarden

Infamous Dominion I agree. AIC, for all their misery and sludginess, were always earthbound. Their songs made you feel lonely while surrounded by everyone you know. They may be sick or dying, maybe you're ruining their lives. But it's real. Soundgarden's darkness was found on another plane, though. Wherever you found yourself now, the songs left you feeling like there weren't any people at all.

BTW this is a live version, and one of those rare cases where I'd prefer the studio version. Cornell had a great recording session for this track. You guys need to hear the original to experience how magical that vocal track is.

Cornell on "Fell on Black Days":"Fell on Black Days" was like this ongoing fear I've had for years ... It's a feeling that everyone gets. You're happy with your life, everything's going well, things are exciting-when all of a sudden you realize you're unhappy in the extreme, to the point of being really, really scared. There's no particular event you can pin the feeling down to, it's just that you realize one day that everything in your life is fucked!

Back before that whole Taylor Swift thing, Tom Hiddleston used to tweet sometimes. One day a fan wrote to him that he had saved her life. He replied, "You saved yourself. Everything you think you see in me is actually you. Be proud." I still think about that sometimes.

Falling on black days is a part of being alive. There are internal and external stresses that wear a person down, both physically and mentally. They key is to destress the mind daily. If not, all of that negative energy will hit you out of no where.

I feel like with all these early 90’s reactions you guys should seriously check out Jeff Buckley. He had that grunge sound but I think there was so much more that can be pulled from his music. He was most known for his cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” His original music was far better imo. Check out his song Grace.

erm, I think "sure don't mind the change" is a reference to the final transition of life brought on by death, and, in this case, that change is achieved via suicide. The whole song is from the perspective of someone who just committed suicide and these are his final thoughts. It's also about a life lived in depression, clinical depression; how many times have you been surprised to learn someone is depressed? This idea is described in the lines, "I'm only faking when I get it right," which is to say a happy exterior of someone who is seemingly well put together, but is only faking it so not to reveal the chaos below the surface.

Fell on Black Days is so powerful and really hits home with many people who suffer with depression (like Chris himself). As with many artists, lyrics can be applied to more than a single experience or meaning, but my feel is that he was referring to the depression that he has struggled with his whole life. The studio version is almost the most perfect song ever created. No need to react to it, but PLEASE check it out when you have time. Great insight and perspective as usual. Thanks.

Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days Lyrics (from genius . com)
Whatsoever I feared has come to light
And whatsoever I've fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded, now I'm doin' time, now I'm doin' time
    [Chorus]
'Cause I fell on black days
    I fell on black days
    [Verse 2]
Whomsoever I've cured, I've sickened now
And whomsoever I've cradled, I've put you down
I'm a searchlight soul, they say, but I can't see it in the night
I'm only faking, when I get it right, when I get it right
    [Chorus]
'Cause I fell on black days
    I fell on black days
    [Bridge 1]
    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    How would I know
That this could be my fate?
    [Verse 3]
'Til what you wanted to see good has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours has made it mine
So, don't you lock up somethin' that you wanted to see fly
Hands are for shaking, no, not tying, no, not tying
    [Bridge 2]
    I sure don't mind a change
    I sure don't mind a change
Sure don't mind... sure don't mind a change
    I sure don't mind a change
    [Chorus]
'Cause I fell on black days
    I fell on black days
    [Bridge 1]
How would I know that this could be my fate?
How would I know that this could be my fate?
How would I know that this could be my fate?
How would I know that this could be my fate?
    [Outro]
    I sure don't mind a change

"Fell On Black Days" is a double entendre, referencing depression AND drug addiction..... Chris suffered from both throughout his life (well documented in Chris' own words throughout his career). Hopefully the song has and/or will help someone struggling with the same to realize they're NOT alone.... Many have and are going through the same.... for some that can be the solace you need 'til you find help. You Are Not Alone.... :)
