Soundgarden is one of the pillars of the Seattle sound of the 90’s. Led by the incomparable Chris Cornell’s vocals they helped to define the music scene of that era. Some songs worth checking out are “Outshined” “Rusty Cage” “Jesus Christ Pose” “My Wave” and “Black Hole Sun” among others. If you want a real treat, listen to Chris’ solo tunes like “Seasons” and “Sunshower”. And since you also appreciate Eddie Vedder, they both sing together on “Hunger Strike” which kind of defined the 90’s. Great reaction!
His wife Vicky and some of his close friends said he was in a good period in his life. He was off drugs, Soundgarden got back together and were touring, he had two young kids that he loved to spend time with. Vicky said that Chris wouldn't have done that and he wasn't himself that night because of the anti-anxiety medication he was on (Ativan). He told her he took a couple too many and was slurring his speech on the phone. That's why she had someone go check on him in his hotel room but by the time they checked on him, it was too late. He was an artist and he sang about dark things but he had learned how to separate that from his actual life. So to sum it up, I don't think it was dark days that took him in the end. Just one bad night and an irreversible bad decision made in a drug-induced state. She's not wrong that this stuff massively fucks with the brain. Chris could sing the saddest songs that made you feel better because the lyrics are so relatable to the human experience. In my mind he had to have been in the down mood to perform this the way he did. Old guy here. Saw them 5 or 6 times back in the day. Loudest band I've ever heard. Amazing live shows. If you want to hear what his voice can really do, check out the songs "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" from Badmotorfinger.

I have loved everything Chris Cornell has done since the first time i heard Jesus Christ Pose off their album Badmotorfinger in 1991. Sadly I never seen SG live but i did see Chris live solo in 2011 and could have in 2017 again BUT i decided to go to another concert festival instead because i thought id be able to see him at a later time. And the band The Pretty Reckless was opening for them and ad been touring with them for awhile so Chris and Taylor Momsen the lead singer (also Cindy Loo Who), had got kinda close like brother sister so it really messed her up when he committed suicide but Kim Thyal (guitarist) and Matt Cameron(drummer) really helped her out of her funk. and both appear on their album Death By Rock And Roll Chris Cornell made magik no matter what he did, Soundgarden, Audioslave, colabs like Alice Cooper or Slash but his Solo acoustic stuff all just soo good.
A big one for that tribute was Taylor Momson (The PrettyReckless). You should check out their song Only Love Can Save Me Now featuring Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron from Soundgarden. The song is about the deep depression Taylor was in after Chris passed and then a few months later her friend and producer Kato passed in a motorcycle accident. It's their best song imo and is very fitting that they have Kim and Matt on it. The video is very symbolic with the lyrics as well.
Taylor was possibly the last person to see Chris alive. After that last show, she thanked him... Her idol. 40 mins later... I met Taylor after her gig in Manchester two years ago. She saw my Soundgarden t shirt and shouted "F***** yay. Soundgarden forever!". I said Taylor, I brought you a new Soundgarden t shirt. Would you do me the honour of taking it?". " Yes" she said "I will..." . ❤❤❤
Soundgarden was formed in Seattle in 1984 and was one of the earliest bands of the 90's grunge rock era (Nirvana, Alice in Chians... formed few years later) ... Chris Cornell (vocals) started on drums but moved to playing guitar alongside Kim Thayil (lead guitar), Matt Cameron (drums) and Hiro Yamamoto (bass)... Soundgarden released their first EP 'Screaming life' in 1987 on the indie Seattle label Sub Pop (which released Nirvana's debut album 'Bleach' in 1989) followed by the EP 'Fopp' in 1988. Their debut album 'Ultramega OK' was released in 1988... Soundgarden was signed to A&M Records in 1989 and released 'Louder than love' in 1989 and enjoyed some MTV exposure as bassist Hiro Yamamoto left the band... Ben Shepherd (bass) eventually replaced him by 1990. Commercial success came w/ their 1991 album 'Badmotorfinger'... as radio and MTV played their singles - 'Jesus Christ pose'... 'Rusty cage' ... 'Outshined'... The album sold gold (half million copies in the USA) and eventually platinum. Chris Cornell also released the album Temple of the Dog, which was a record he wrote to pay tribute to his late friend Andrew Wood (lead singer of Mother Love Bone) who died in 1990 from a OD... Temple of the Dog also featured members of Pearl Jam in 1991 and the single 'Hunger strike' became a hit in '92 as the album sold platinum as well (1 million copies) After the death of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain in 1994... and Pearl Jam... Alice in Chains... retreating from public view, the spotlight fell on Soundgarden to fill the void in the Seattle rock scene. The album 'Superunknown' became a massive hit on MTV and radio in '94 w/ the singles - 'Black hole Sun'... 'Spoonman' ... 'The day I tried to live'... 'Fell on black days' ... 'My wave'... 🤘🤘It sold 6x platinum in the US and won Soundgarden Grammy Awards... In 1996, Soundgarden released the album 'Down on the upside'... but despite major MTV and radio airplay w/ the singles - 'Pretty noose' ... 'Burden in my hand' ... 'Blow up the outside world'... the album sold platinum only... On tour, Chris Cornell seemed to struggle playing live and the internal situation seemed to deteriorate by 1997... Soundgarden announced that they were breaking up that year. Chris Cornell released his first solo album 'Euphoria morning' in 1999... then, he joined the band Audioslave w/ former members of Rage Against the Machine in 2002 ... and released 3 albums w/ them. Soundgarden eventually reunited in 2011 and began working on new music & playing shows... Their new song 'Live to rise' was on the 'Marvel's Avengers' movie soundtrack... Their new album 'King Animal' was finally released in 2012. By 2017, Soundgarden were working on songs for a new album, but things were not well w/ Chris Cornell and he seemed to be struggling once again w/ live performances... After a Soundgarden show in Detroit in 2017, Chris Cornell tragically took his own life... Soundgarden has yet to announce anything since then.
Wait til you go down the Chris Cornell rabbit hole, it's def worth too btw. Amazing artist n how he was friends with some of the greatest artists of the Grunge era. Chris was in another band after, Audioslave, and they have quite a few incredible songs too
Nikki i love your Soundgarden story. Chris affected so many people in so many ways. Also Sandman was inspired by Kim Thyalls riff in Soundgardrns Loud Love. Metallica have said that , on the record. If you pardon the pun. ❤❤❤
Chris's amazing vocals! Lead singer of three great bands, Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave, and also did his solo stuff. Lotta great songs, try Spoonman, Rusty Cage, The Day I Tried To Live. More Soundgarden please! Really just anything and everything from Chris🤘
Chris and Eddie, two of my favorite writers and singers, ever. Chris could wail the high notes like no other, a truly sad loss. Soundgarden was one of the preeminent grunge bands.
Chris is amazing, probably the greatest vocalist to come out of the grunge era (or possibly ever). A lot of thers songs are a little darker and depressing but they are truly works of art.
Rock on the Range? So you're from Central Ohio too? What a small world we live in. I became an instant fan when I saw Black Hole Sun on Beavis and Butthead when it was airing on MTV in the early 90s. They've been my favorite band ever since. Chris' lyrics in this song specifically saved my life, and I'll always be grateful for that.
They had this combo of deep melody and incredible grunge heavy guitar sounds mixed. Being able to watch you watch this is amazing! because I think i was sitting in my bedroom listening to kroq in la at 14 when I first heard this.
RIP Chris Cornell 🕯🕯🕯Such an amazing voice and artist.Taylor Momsen lead singer from The Pretty Reckless was really upset over Chris dying. TPR was one of bands on tour with them and Taylor one of the last people to talk with him.
You mention in your video about artists paying tribute to Chris in the days after he died, one that you should check out is Norah Jones who played Black Hole Sun at her show in Detroit just a few days after Chris died. it's haunting and beautiful.

So this is the music video version of the song. The album version which is probably also on youtube has a different feel to it. The music video version is slightly slower and more soulful.
“Black Hole Sun” is widely considered Chris’ signature song, but it’s more of a showcase for his songwriting than his voice. Here you start to get a glimpse of the power and range that he had vocally. His lyrics were also a cut above the standard rock fare. As a singer he still has few peers at all. But too many of our dark stars have fallen, and I just want them to be at peace at last.
I saw them open for Skid Row at the Auditorium North Hall (about 4K seats). Six months later or so I saw them again opening for Guns & Roses on Use Your Illusion Tour. They were great both nights. I only wish I got to see Audioslave or even RATM. I've seen way over 100 live shows but missed a few of my favorite artists.
In this song Chris regards to falling on black days to his depression 🫥. Chris was also frontman in a group called Audioslave. If you could ever react to Chris in Audioslave that would be great! Thx 😊
I grew up in the grunge era 😊 Try Rusty Cage by Soundgarden. It’s got everything in one song that’s great about grunge. Uptempo and downtempo for moshing, Chris’ wailing vocals, and Soundgarden’s playful way of keeping the listener a bit off balance while still maintaining the groove. Great reaction. Subscribed. Thanks.
a similar song expressing depression is the video cut "Suicide" by Ren - he really duplicates the emotional state of being suicidal, and follows with the reasons why nobody should do it -
Excellent reaction.. Recommend two songs Slaves & Bulldozers Soundgarden and Mojo pin Jeff Buckley live in Glastonbury. Regards from Chile South America..
I definitely think you should check out the 90s band Temple of the Dog. Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam) collaborated their vocals together to create an incredible sound with the songs "Hunger Strike" and "Say Hello 2 Heaven" specifically. You definitely should check them out! With regard to Soundgarden, I'd say check out "Rusty Cage" and "Spoonman."
Agree, the Temple of The Dog tribute album (for Andrew Wood) and especially the song "Hunger Strike" is a must on a Chris Cornell/Soundgarden Journey.❤ However, just to keep things clear for Nikki, the song "Hunger Strike" was NOT a collaboration of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Out of the tragedy of Andrew's death, Chris wrote the album and was recording it with Andy's surviving bandmates of Mother Love Bone (Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard) ,who were also auditioning for a new lead singer. They felt Andy would want them to continue. Anyway, a very young and unexperienced Eddie Vedder was sitting outside the recording booth waiting for his "audition with Stone and Jeff as they were trying to record "Hunger Strike". Chris was frustrated with his vocals in the chorus. He kept saying "I can't sing it the way I hear it in my head" (the low parts). The young and then unknown Eddie understood and walked into the booth and started singing the lows parts. Chris loved it. He has recounted it many times through the years in interviews. In a nutshell Chris has stated that he was struggling with the lower parts and then this guy, quietly, but with some balls came in, walked up to a mic and started singing the low parts"... the rest is history... the band Pearl Jam was born.
@@tinagilbert8902 I wasn't saying that it was a collaboration of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. I was saying that Eddie and Chris collaborated together vocally.
Okay, so now that you’ve heard Soundgarden, you can cast your vote in the great debate of the 90’s. Who is the best singer? Eddie Vedder or Chris Cornell? It was a huge debate at my college. I was on Chris Cornell’s side, but I think I’ve changed my mind since then. Also, now you should definitely listen to Temple of the Dog, which is the big team up with both Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell. Their most popular song is called Hunger Strike. The video is okay, but the song is outstanding.
This isn't the album version, it was recorded much later, that's probably why you didn't get the 90s vibes, but to be fair it doesn't sound all that different. Chris Cornell's cover of Nothing Compares 2U is an amazing showcase of his voice.
I like this song but wouldn't be one that I would introduce someone to Soundgarden with. I did not know that about Metallica but I have heard other stories of Soundgarden inspiring parts of Metallica songs. I've seen Soundgarden in concert at least 15 times, and had backstage passes to Metallica 5 times. One show they both played at! I feel very lucky. I'm looking forward to more of your reactions.
Simple? I guess you could say that, but the understated power of this progression/groove in 6/4 time is not something you often hear in rock music. The understated power also applies to Cornell’s vocal approach…he only lets it out when in matters. This song masterfully communicates what they meant to communicate. 👍
You want Soundgarden Blow up the oitside world Black hole Sun. Cochise among others. Audioslave which is Cornell fronting as well Like a Stone I am the Highway, Gasoline, Say hello to Heaven among others. Then Temple of the Dog which was basically Pearl Jam with Chris Cornell hunger strike among others
I don't know when this version surfaced but I never heard it til about 4 years ago and the production is just weird and every thing about it that differs from the album version is a change for the worse imo.
Oh really? 🤔 I will have to check out other versions to see what you mean. A few people have said that now. That's what's hard about reactions sometimes. I just have to pick one and hope for the best 😬 lol
Yup. Depression is a like the tides. It ebbs and flows. And if combined with a storm it swells. You build sea walls in your mind to help protect against yourself but sometimes the waves breach and on that fateful night in Detroit it consumed him and he succumbed to his lifelong battle. So sad. He was brilliant and I’m so grateful I was alive at the same time to see him close to 40 times in all different eras of his career. RIP and may his music live on forever. PS will the powers that be at the Rock N Roll HOF get their respective heads out of asses and get him and his bands inducted. FFS
I always hated black hole sun, it's like their sweet child o mine. Fell on black days is way much better song, and the studio version of this song is way better than the video version.

I hate to admit it. I love Chris Cornell. He speaks to way how I feel.my life completely sucks. Chris Cornell told me the truth
This song has seen me through a lot of hard times, especially this video.
PEACE ✌✌✌✌✌✌✌
Some say they waited for one of "those" Cornell days for them to film this clip.
Hi Nikki 👋 😁
Hi! 😁👋🏻
Try "Burden in my hand"!!
Excellent reaction..
Recommend two songs
Slaves & Bulldozers Soundgarden and Mojo pin Jeff Buckley live in Glastonbury.
Eddie said Chris was like a big brother to him.
we expect our hero's to live forever and they don't 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
Check out "Outshined ".❤
Studio version blows this one away
Thank you . This reminds me of the 90s… fuck ya..
You should check out, Outshined.
⚡️METALLICA⚡️BEEN A HUGE FAN FOREVER!! 😊
Top Soundgarden:
1. Outshined
2. Rusty Cage
3. Blow Up the Outside World
Chris was a troubled dude. RIP.
Chris has more range but both are great singers. But honestly you should stick with Chris
This isn't the album version, it was recorded much later, that's probably why you didn't get the 90s vibes, but to be fair it doesn't sound all that different.
Chris Cornell's cover of Nothing Compares 2U is an amazing showcase of his voice.
2024 Kids have no idea what was, hope you find sincere music again.
🤔
Then Temple of the Dog which was basically Pearl Jam with Chris Cornell hunger strike among others

i know falling on black days
i think chris was battling bad demons
Indeed, he was. This song is a window into that frame of mind
Chris wrote a lot of very dark songs; he is greatly missed.
You need to listen to spoonman!!!

More and more every day.

chris's death fell on black days
please give me a reaction from my country Indonesia (deadsquad - patriot moral prematur ) I hope my message will be answered ❤❤🤘
Strange rendition. Album version is dope.
Schism isn't near top Tool. You gotta do "Sober." It's his addiction talking to him.
It's just that this official video is actual live footage instead of just lipsynced with the album audio.
Chris was murdered he would of seen him but yeah sad
Depression is what he died from.
I sure don't mind a change
