Took a module on Southeast Asian Buddhism under Dr Chia a couple of years ago. He always made it a point to make the lessons engaging and to bring new insight into the materials covered. It was easily the most fun I had learning as an undergrad :)

i lived in Block 59 Telok Blangah Heights. On some nights (maybe 1st and 15th of lunar months and Buddhist days) from my bedroom window i could see the temple brightly lit up. Based on the scale i didn’t seem a small temple to me.
At one time (forget which year) cars and taxis would lined up along TLH where people took turn to collect water flowing out from a brook into the drain to wash their cars, particularly to wash the license plates. It was said that the water source came from the temple and could bless the car license number to win 4D.
I moved out in early 84, didnt know if the temple was already demolished then. I would guess it’s demolished when they built that bridge across Henderson Road. I could remember some elderly residents were rather unhappy with the bridge. I didn’t know why then, but now on hindsight i think it’s because they demolished the temple.

I've been to the 1000 Buddha temple when I was very young. It was a very steep slope driving up but really windy on top!.. :) I was always quite terrified of the slope!:)) if I remember correctly the pyramid structure was also a water feature and there was water flowing out of it..

Visited the temple as a teenager and later, as a young man. Looking in the other direction, away from the sea, one can see Depot/Alexander spread out below the temple.
As to the Alkaff garden, I remember walking my dogs some 15 years back in what was the Christian cemetery side of Bididari, near the back of Cedar Girl's. There's a dip in the land at that spot and during rainy days, it would pool up. Now I know why. It was probably a remnant of the lake. Of course, due to redevelopment, flats are now standing there.
