hey micheal i hope u r doing so well i have a few questions i wanna be a professional vfx/editor/cgiFx at hollywood which means that i need to learn (avid media composer, nuke, Maya, mocha pro) wish u a good day!
I was considering looking at Avid Media Composer for video (I'm a ProTools musician/engineer/producer/arranger) but even though this video is two years old, it's still relevant, and had convinced me to stick with Adobe Premiere Pro, and the vast suite of very useful, very cool, often updated, tools. If I was angling for a Hollywood editing job, I would reconsider, but , frankly, Somerset in the UK is just too beautiful! Thanks
Great breakdown! I was one of the many that got burned by Apple on killing FCP7. As an associate editor for a documentary production house (and the only editor on staff at the time) I transitioned our entire workflow to Premiere between projects only to have an editor come on 80% through shooting a new project and insist on Avid. Had to change the entire workflow again and we were set back two months starting over in Avid. The long-form stability, collaboration tools and script sync were ultimately worth it, but it was certainly a pain getting there (and relearning how to edit with MC).
Every interview I saw (or remember) of a director of either Hollywood or Bollywood movie said that they used avid (its pretty much a industry standard)
I love Avid and Premiere both for different reasons but Avid has some unique attributes not discussed... 1. Dynamic trimming. 2. Also works on Mac and PC. 3. Color Correction tools are top notch. 4. Ability to open bins from decades ago. (great for TV) 5. More stable during exports. 6. This is just me but when I am in Avid I tend to think in terms of frames and when I am in Premiere I think in terms of seconds.
That's Stephen King's "The Mist"! www.imdb.com/title/tt0884328/ Also, at the end of every episode, I list the cutaways I used in the credits. Thanks for watching!
I'd love to hear what you have to say about Resolve in 2020. It seems like Black Magic is really trying to innovate fast and to build their own ecosystem with hardware and software.
We've moved from FCP7 and Premiere as a team to Avid. Unfortunately Avid is so fussy, pedantic and archaic. The tools in Premiere are miles ahead in terms of UI and functionality.
hi i wanted ti ask i have small experience with davincy but wanna get better but all the job that need editing in my country all say premier pro and film pro what do i do
Thanks for the video, Michael! I'm a student in Los Angeles in my senior year of university looking to get a job as soon as I get out of school. I've got a great handle on Premiere and DaVinci but it seems like getting a job in the short term is really going to rely on Avid skills, so I'm going to develop those.
Hi, Bryan and Michael! I'm in a similar situation -- just moved to LA, and looking for a job. But interestingly, I'm finding the exact opposite of what you are, Bryan -- a lot of job postings wanting Premiere, and hardly ever Avid. (With FCP showing up now and then.) I'm on every job board site I can find, and there's just not much Avid work. I'm ready to edit any moving image, regardless of genre/topic. I know that I will need to learn all 3 NLEs to be relevant, but right now all I know is Avid. Where are you finding these magical Avid postings?! :)
Great video. Clear explanation and reasoning. Personally I wish more editors were open to FCPX just because they are missing out on such an enjoyable experience, but as you say, Apple isn’t particularly bothered with the Hollywood sector, as it’s happy providing software to a giant army of social media editors.
@@chriszayachkowski6198 absolutely, but I think they still support FCP pretty well. It seems to have found its niche with more solo editors and you tubers. Not that you can't use it for feature films, TV etc, but its more pro-super friendly IMO. Personally I don't use anything else and love it.
I think there’s one point missing from this analisys. Avid has grown out of the server based world, with all the robustness it entails, it provides a much needed base for colaboration. That’s a key on the markets it dominates. FCP came out of the file based world, the world that seemed like the future before the internet. True that even FCPX recognized that and changed for a server model as well, and premiere is still trying some hybrid solutions. FCP7 was king on the indie industry because it didn’t need so much colaboration, at least, not instant one. There’s nothing like editing hundreds of hours of footage in Avid, you can copy to another machine and not worry about the link/relink dance others need, it will automatically work. I grew up on FCP (classic), learned and use Avid now, but tried PP on my last feature but I gave up waiting literally 20 mins for project to load. Publishing (team projects) an updated project is not the same as bin-locking-sharing. PP might be the future, but i do have only budget for a single subscription. Avid makes me money without headaches, PP seems to be the future, or it might always be the future.
all I know is that I love adobe premier pro...its just so user friendly to me...but i understand that there is still a ton of stuff i need to learn about softwares like da vinci and avid...which should I learn next...avid or da vinci
Would you do a "5 things: on the truth about Compositing Software in Hollywood episode? Foundry Nuke vs Autodesk Flame? BTW, you have a very strong sense of humor!
Thank you... I am switching to Davinci resolve.. premiere pro subscription was too costly for me... Sply when i am just starting editing work. Its wonderful that they charge hollywood production house and a poor guy sitting in remote corner with low bandwidth internet the SAME Price... Huh.
Michael Kammes - At least to my knowledge, Blender is being used by quite a number of studios for both - rendering and editing, primarily due to its Cycles rendering engine and Compositor.
I think the market for NLE’s is outside of Hollyweird.Avid I believe is in trouble.(still)Adobe with there subscription model is loosing market share .FCP is doing better and of course Apple owns the patents on Pro res.(Avid has there’s)Adobe has to pay both of them to utilized there Codecs.Last but not least,I think Davinci Resolve is a strong and upcoming contender to all of them.It has a a great all encompassing suite for a great price.(let’s not forget, they know the customer base in Hollywood)The good news for all the non Hollweird editors is that there are some great affordable NLE’s available. Also don’t forget mobile editing(LumaFusion)Not to shabby on the go.(will son interface with FCP.Thx for the great video!
I 100% FCPX. I've used Avid and Pr Pro and both are clunky, slow and in-efficient. I can cut a documentary or commercial in half the time on FCPX. There is so much you can do in FCPX you would otherwise need Ae or another graphic suite that really makes cutting in FCPX a better experience. That coupled with real-time 4k rendering and exports that takes just minutes, no subscription service, it's just a no brainer for me.
Fast forward two years and I hear people left and right ditching Adobe Premiere Pro, because it's too expensive, it's too slow and crashes all the time. Most people are moving to DaVinci Resolve, but some to FCPX. I am a die hard FCPX user and to me even DaVinci Resolve's workflow and UI feels outdated and tired. Still too close to the film/tape paradigm. I think this is where FCPX will shine. With newer generations of editors who need an NLE that is really made for the digital age.
If we continue to focus on the area the video looks at - Hollywood - I would respectfully say this is wishful thinking. Resolve and FCPX - for creative editorial in feature film and Television - is an extraordinarily small slice of the pie. Resolve has without question become the standard for color grading, and used by AEs and DITs for media prep, but is decidedly not used for creative editorial. Thanks for watching!
Good video. I'm surprised DaVinci Resolve was just a 30 second footnote. I'm just getting started on video editing (purely as a hobby) and after many hours of internet searches, Resolve seemed to be the most recommended. I used Premiere Pro briefly but the subscription model is just too expensive as a hobbyist and DaVinci was free! Often times with free software you get some dumbed down piece of junk, but it's actually pretty amazing. I'm probably going to buy the $300 paid version to unlock the very few features that it comes with, but I could easily get by with just the free version if I felt like it. It's worth noting that I saw another video recently that compared rendering times of DaVinci vs Premiere and DaVinci was roughly 3-4x faster than Premiere was due to better hardware encoding support. I'm sure this will balance out over time but still, it's a huge difference!
@@michaelkammes I don't think performance is a problem using Resolve as an NLE anymore (in fact I finally feel I'm working with something that can take advantage of modern hardware with stability, although I'm told it works well on Macs as well). Sadly it's old farts who don't want to look to the future, that equal no adoption. Adobe has been polishing a turd for years (I know opinions are like something else everyone has), and FCPX can't be used on anything other than outdated hardware (a Mac,... Walter Murch). I've had over twenty years too many working with products from the last two companies mentioned. I'm still a bit of a Machead contrary to my above comments, but not everyone can run out and buy something from Apple that keeps up with this 4K+ world we're in (despite FCPX's or Avid's efficiencies).
The most important reason why Avid took over the film industry is because film editors hated video. Avid came up with the Film Composer that worked at 24fps and that was the feature film editors liked.
My recommendation...avid composer skills for film tv..adobe products for commercial ads and video and davinci for personal and youtube...final cut pro too much small niche with 2019 mac pro overkill 60k system....pc offers more custom windows and hardwares and more software...apple service sucks along limited upgrade since not atx case, since crossplatform software apple just got final cut logic pro and garageband no gaming unless vm, and pc has alot more use and software. I used linux macos windows but industry mostly windows I use. Apple fans say industry calls macs i guess they been not around alot studios...apple in education sector limited production small studios and graphic design.
I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean Avid Media Composer? Yes, for Hollywood feature film and television, Media Composer is still the standard by a wide margin. Thanks for watching!
Great article and video discussion. Im currently in a college Digital video course and the software we use there is Avid media composer. As someone whose background is a music producer hobbyist, I was well aware of Pro Tools in the professional market, but due to cost and owning a Mac for many years now, I became acquainted with Logic. And as such iMovie and Final cut for limited times I needed to put together video. Now that Im venturing more into video with goPros, DSLRs and Drones Ive been researching professional video software. My biggest issue at school in our video class is Im constantly referring to how Id do task in final cut. Certain things like cut in/ cut out on different windows instead of one timeline, separate windows for almost all task, and bins and storage location confuse me, and I often ask for help from our professor and other students... Again similar to Pro Tools and Logic. Im aware one (pro tools and Media composer) are the industry standard , but I prefer the more modern and streamlined (to me) workflow of Logic/ Final Cut. Plus the seamless integration of computer and software all under Apple. Ive used other products from Steinberg and Sony as well over years, but I still come back to the Apple options.
I've only just started to self teach video editing and after a long look at what was available I've settled on two, Vegas Pro (surprisingly powerful and very affordable with Magix's frequent sales) in the hope Magix will properly invest in it, if they do I think it'll be a big player in the market, and Davinci Resolve, this company has struck me as one that's in for the long game, they're pretty much bossing colour grading and are desperate to bring the other aspects of editing up to that standard, my spidey senses tell me they'll do it as well
Magix is killing Vegas Pro, it "could" be a good software but they missed the good development turning point. Beginner may find the features good but once you get more experience in video editing you see that more they release build, more we get half baked features. Vegas pro has the potential to be a high end tool but will stay as a tool for editing youtube videos etc. After 12 years of using VP today is the day i've decided to switch to Resolve
Avid's edge in Hollywood makes sense, but I still think FCPX is the future as long as Apple doesn't kill it. It basically abandons the old way of editing and creates a new way that is faster and easier once you get past the learning curve.
I wonder how far Apple will be able to go with the new "people will pay higher prices for Apple" sentiment that the company seems to be adapting. I've been a Apple user for 20 years with Final Cut Pro x and Logic Pro x but am looking into a move to PC based systems. Tried the monthly thing with Adobe and was horrified at the constant price changes. I bought a HP Spectre 360 to try out the PC programs to see if I could make the switch and not miss my iMac. I've tried HitFilm, DaVinci and haven't found anything that works as well on a laptop. I'm using Premiere Elements for my smaller videos and back to Final Cut for the longer more graphics videos. would like to know what others are using and on what computer setup.
That was excellent. I live in Atlanta now. I still want to be current. I still have my media composer but I can't see upgrading it because sometimes it does not work with the new technology . I love Avid products but when I was burnt with there Pro Tools hardware I started seeking elsewhere for hardware. I still use Avid Media composer and Pro Tools . I just won't buy any of Avids Hardware. Plus there $1,000b for tech support per year has turned me off.
I tried to change to resolve...but in the edit roam it feels... like editing while drunk or so..to fluid ...to slippery...that is the best I can describe it. even 14
Agreed. I'm a new user of Resolve and some of the nuances of the interface make it a little awkward. Cutting clips for instance where you have to switch tools from the hand/pointer/razor constantly rather than using a right click -> cut makes it a pain.
DaShnizify, you communicate like a jerk. Why do that? Nobody wants to work with that. And while I have nothing against FCPX at all (long may it live -- it's cool) it WAS entirely accurate to say that Apple killed FCP7. I used that platform for sixteen years. I started with version 1.0 in the summer of 1999. It was End of Lifed completely and does not have a "redevelopment relationship" with X. Kammes spoke correctly on that point. That's not hating on anything.
Da Schnizify, How old are you? And do you have a real world name? I want to make sure you're not hired on a show I'm on and also make sure I don't walk into a facility where you are working.
Josh Beal is a Hollywood editor who has worked on such shows as Counterpart, Bloodline, and House of Cards. As a TV editor, Josh thinks it is time for Hollywood to reconsider Final Cut Pro X as a viable editing platform. In this presentation ( th-cam.com/video/h-UQ1oR49b8/w-d-xo.html ), Josh explains why Avid Media Composer is the King of the NLE in Hollywood and what needs to happen to convince current Media Composer editors to switch over to Final Cut Pro X.
With Premiere Pro gaining new seats like you were saying, I think it's only a matter of time as long as Adobe is "hauling ass" in their innovation department for them to take over the Hollywood industry. I know that editors that are in Hollywood didn't start there, and that's still true today. If the vast majority of editors outside of Hollywood use Premiere Pro, Avid can only delay the inevitable. A complete collapse of the company. There have been many times in history that a monopoly gets too comfortable than out of the blue get shaken up real bad by a competitor. That is what I feel what's going on here.
@@scottanderson9656 it’s gonna take some time but davinci will eventually take over. Cheaper, better optimized than premiere and the best tracking out of any video editor. Not to mention industry standard color grading. Fairlight and fusion kinda suck cock tho :(
@@fffklan3986 Good luck with that thinking. Davinci is used for color in DIs etc but unless you want your future to be cutting wedding videos I would suggest you adjust your thinking. The cost of cutting on AVID is cheaper, much cheaper when you take into consideration how it integrates with other post production systems that professionals use. By professionals I mean people who cut movies and TV shows. If you want to stick with Davinci as what you're going to work on go ahead and die on that hill and accept that your life is going to be cutting youtube and wedding videos. yes and the killed the pure color grader tool.also you need the latest and greatest workstation to run BMD software. too many bugs I know its beta but beta 4 should be better then b1, thats not the case, they need 12-18 months to complete the intergration of fusion, that means unstable buggy software the next many months.
No doubt. Anytime I dabble in Fusion I get crashes or such a slow down that I cant even see in working in the review window and my computer is high end.
As an emmy winning editor for over 50yrs, yes i go way back to physical splicing of quad tape, (before time code) then Ampex Editec, then CMX (in many flavors) Avid came close to what we knew and therefore adopted. Avid has gotten too high and mighty and way out if control for cost, this forces to look for alternatives. It was Adobe as the first choice. However i think they shot themselves in the foot with this whole subsription based thing. I think DaVinci will be Adobes competitor. Adobe needs to rethink thier strategy or lose the market. I have worked with the PRO-1 bundle and never had to "render" anything. All effects were done in real time using the PRO-1 processing board. They need to create ine for high-def work as I despise this whole rendering thing.

During that production, FCPX 10.4 came out and they discuss the added advantages..you on the other hand have not updated this video critique and you should. And by the way, those updates however major don't cost FCPX a thing. And if you really observed and studied the advantages those who have made feature films with FCPX have talked about, its unfair not to mention that any movie house wanting to save thousands should in fact consider using FCPX.

I would like to know more of your thoughts on Sony Vegas since it is very popular in the youtube space. Have you ever talked about it before?
Yeah okey thanks, i edit in Premiere myself but used to edit in Vegas before i started university. Was just interested to hear your thoughts on it since alot of new youtubers always for some reason star using Vegas. Oh and thanks for the quick answer!
davinci resolve 15 is the best
Is that your patent in the background?
No, just tech-art :-)
@@michaelkammes It looks the first pc patent for expansion slots. Very cool choice 👌😎

Reliability is the most important thing to have in any NLE. Premiere and resolve lack this.

Hi Ethene! Feel free to ask any questions, and I'll do my best to answer them. Thanks for watching!
Thanks
Great content! Direct, clear and organized. Subscribed. Cheers from Brazil!
What's falcon pro? 😁
I use final cut pro x

We've moved from FCP7 and Premiere as a team to Avid. Unfortunately Avid is so fussy, pedantic and archaic. The tools in Premiere are miles ahead in terms of UI and functionality.
I've been able to get experience with Lightworks Pro, DaVinci Resolve Studio, and Premiere Pro so far!

(With FCP showing up now and then.)
I'm on every job board site I can find, and there's just not much Avid work. I'm ready to edit any moving image, regardless of genre/topic. I know that I will need to learn all 3 NLEs to be relevant, but right now all I know is Avid. Where are you finding these magical Avid postings?! :)
So... the question is... what video editing software did YOU use to make this video???
Great video. Clear explanation and reasoning. Personally I wish more editors were open to FCPX just because they are missing out on such an enjoyable experience, but as you say, Apple isn’t particularly bothered with the Hollywood sector, as it’s happy providing software to a giant army of social media editors.
Exactly! Apple could care less about professional editors. They make most of their money selling iPhones and iPads.
@@chriszayachkowski6198 absolutely, but I think they still support FCP pretty well. It seems to have found its niche with more solo editors and you tubers. Not that you can't use it for feature films, TV etc, but its more pro-super friendly IMO. Personally I don't use anything else and love it.

Very cool man! I love this type of info! Much appreciated
Eduardo Serrano is avid still no1 even now to you ?
Resolve is the future.
all I know is that I love adobe premier pro...its just so user friendly to me...but i understand that there is still a ton of stuff i need to learn about softwares like da vinci and avid...which should I learn next...avid or da vinci

Awesome informative video. I really enjoyed this one. Thank You.
is that Shinedown for the opening?
DaVinci Resolve 15 - worth checking out!
Compare it to Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro.
Still susprised that Blender is not mentioned in any of these kind of videos.
Michael Kammes - At least to my knowledge, Blender is being used by quite a number of studios for both - rendering and editing, primarily due to its Cycles rendering engine and Compositor.
FCPX is good for youtubers, freelancers, and small teams. While AVID is for heavy big projects.
Sod it , I used Media 100, but switched to FCPX
I think Davinci Resolve is doing really good job.
what about blender?
Blender, while a great creative tool, is not considered a video editor (NLE).
Thanks for watching!
...Why did they have to kill fcp7, WHY?! :'[
excellent video!
Because its apple
Great advice!! Keep 'em comin'
I'm sticking with Avid. (Not an easy decision.)
IM PLANNING THIS A CAREER, IS IT GOOD ENOUGH?
I'm not sure I understand. Do you mean Avid Media Composer? Yes, for Hollywood feature film and television, Media Composer is still the standard by a wide margin.
Thanks for watching!
Great stuff as always. I'm definitely sharing. 👊🏼
Hello Michael. Nice video! So which NLE was used to put this video together?
Thanks so much for an answer! And what do you recommend for subtitles/closed captioning on macOS? Any workflow or software recommendation?
very informative thanks a lot
FCPX good for consumers and freelancer, but not enough for big hollywood project.
Vinsensius Gracia Why because they’ve been systematically shut out?
One year later, Resolve is now the future....if BMD gets it right

Editing with film is non-linear. ;)
Perfect!
Now the world of editing is ruled by Davinci resolve 16😈 2019

@@fffklan3986 Good luck with that thinking. Davinci is used for color in DIs etc but unless you want your future to be cutting wedding videos I would suggest you adjust your thinking. The cost of cutting on AVID is cheaper, much cheaper when you take into consideration how it integrates with other post production systems that professionals use. By professionals I mean people who cut movies and TV shows. Cutting on Avid feels like living with an abusive spouse: you constantly have to do what they say the exact way that they say to do it or they will sabotage you and possibly hurt you.
THIS. THIS.
Michael Kammes, James Page, and anyone else interested, I've discovered there is a "block" option on a user's TH-cam profile page, under the flag icon on the right. One doesn't have to listen to abusive posters. Cheers.
Davinci Resolve just added Fusion.
yes and the killed the pure color grader tool.also you need the latest and greatest workstation to run BMD software. too many bugs I know its beta but beta 4 should be better then b1, thats not the case, they need 12-18 months to complete the intergration of fusion, that means unstable buggy software the next many months.
I think that You tube has far surpassed Hollywood in video project creations. Wouldn't you agree?

And by the way, those updates however major don't cost FCPX a thing.
