      My daughter is a professional film editor in New York. A good editor can make a great actor even better and talk a director out keeping in a scene the director has fallen in love with that is better left out. Starts with being honest and direct with objectivity the director may have lost by the time editing begins. “I’m sorry, I have kill your love child …”

    Speaking my language. I've been cutting trailers/promos for 22 years, almost all with one of those companies off the top :) There are so many layers to a good trailer but you definitely hit the overview nicely. The story beats are critical... and they have to be easily-digested, assuming someone has no clue what the IP is.
    This is the world.
    Here is the protagonist.
    This is what they want.
    Oh wait...
    This is what is stopping them.
    (Bass hit, stopdown) -- Antagonist states their purpose
    (Reverse into...)
    Come on the journey see if they can overcome.
    Build. Stopdown.
    Moment to trigger another action sequence.
    Blam blam blam.
    Usually one final line.
    Call to action.
    You pass all of that out and those stopdown moments are so valuable because it really refocuses the audience. Beginning trailer editors sometimes just go rapid fire where it's like a drum solo on top of a guitar solo and nothing is taking the lead.
    Sound design is soooo critical. It drives those moments and the pacing, as well as the music. I rarely stick with the same piece of music for a trailer, I try to switch for every act, unless it's some licensed track that the bosses want used.
    It's super fun leading different parts take the lead... a VO coming forward, letting music play for a some beats, sound design to carve out those changes.
    Oh, also... if you do a stutter cut... do at least three so it doesn't look like a mistake. Or, if it's just a two cut moment, the sound design has to be obvious so the audience knows it was intentional.
    It really is like a big musical composition of so many different moving parts.

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very well-put and laid out! Most trailers are definitely a musical composition first with a story attached second. Many of the best trailer editors tend to have some sort of musical background or training.

    • @terurehepaki3394
      @terurehepaki3394 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How long would you typically take to edit a trailer?

    • @ronineditor9920
      @ronineditor9920 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@terurehepaki3394 It totally depends on the client's notes but I can sometimes get a cut together in a week but usually the approval can take 1-3 months. One took a year, as the project kept getting pushed, so they tweaked along the way.
      I usually watch the film, then rewatch and do two select reels; bytes and b-roll. I'll find 'tentpole' moments to set up the three acts. I'll do a loose cut with bytes filled-in... then I'll really get into the music. With the music, I mark the changes, like the verses, stops, bridge, etc. I start with the music and then it's a back and forth with what drives it -- the bytes or the music coming forward sometimes. It's definitely a lot of back and forth before I like it, then off to the client.

    Hey guys & gals! Question time --- What type of editor are you? Have you ever tried cutting a trailer? How'd it turn out?

    • @sweetlemonadstudios3366
      @sweetlemonadstudios3366 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t made a trailer yet, but I have made a few music videos. I know that music videos and trailers are not the same thing, and I am far from becoming a professional, but these are fan music videos. I used to make these things called GMV’s (Gaming Music Videos) for a game I played a few years ago. In these GMV’s I’d sometimes have to find a way to squeeze together 2 seasons of a story line into just four minutes or less without the story being too jumpy to understand. Like I said, I made those a couple years ago so they aren’t great, but with the skills I’ve learned from them (and from these videos) I hope to make some trailers soon.

    As someone who wants to specialize in editing trailers, this helped a lot! I did a whole four years to get my degree in editing and there were no classes focused on TRAILERS. The only thing I’ve done to really hone this craft is making fan-trailers as well as making trailers for my own films and my friends films. It was a great film program but trailer editing specifically was never really focused on: just making the principal film. Thank you so much for this and I hope I can find more resources for editing trailers! :)

    This is why I love this industry. There's not one set career objective when going into this field. I've found success in indie short films, live event broadcast, studio design, and purely post-pro. This industry captivates those who want to create and who are dedicated to the craft. "network network network" is a big part of it (film students know what I'm talking about), but creativity and drive are other factors that can propel you into the next tier. People care about what you make, not the fake face you put on. Be real, make good shit. This industry is both cutthroat, but also fulfilling.

    I personally think some people in hollywood need to re-hear this haha!
    I don't know how many times i'd be in the theater and the previews come on, some being genuinely entising and intrigue me in the story to actually want to watch. Then there's the ones where it literally just wraps up the entirety of the story into the trailer... like, ok great, I know the plot, antagonist, issue at hand, hero, you asked "will he make it?!" then show a happy ending shot of him making it / winning. that's frustrating to me, especially when i can't look away for if i am actually interested.

    How do you re-edit a movie with its soundtrack already mixed in - separating dialogue for example? Do top trailer editors get the movie without the final music embedded?

    • @chrismacdonald4863
      @chrismacdonald4863 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You’re correct - trailer editors receive the film with DME splits (dialogue, music, effects). We’re able to ignore most of the music and effects and just use the dialogue with the shots we need.

      @@chrismacdonald4863 Great to know, thanks - this info seems to be overlooked with barely an article questioning the source of the material.

      If you have Adobe Audition, you can play around with some of the settings to remove background music. It's not one hundred percent perfect, but I've found that sampling some audio with background music in Audition you can go Effects > Stereo Imagery > Center Channel Extractor, fiddle with the Frequency Range dropdown options to select what voice it's keeping, and run that filter through a few times to eliminate the music! there's probably better ways to do this but this is what I find works for me (and also has helped me clean off copyrighted music for monetization purposes haha)

    Great video. What would be the usual approach to finding music for the trailer. Does the film composer compose a specific score for the trailer?
    If so, is that based on a rough first edit of the trailer with perhaps a temp track?

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically after market music from a production company based on the desired style and target demographic of the trailer

    Got a question for you - normally does the trailer editor, edit the film once the film has been put together?

    • @FilmEditingPro
      @FilmEditingPro  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically the trailer editor is a different person from the film editor. The trailer is often being cut while the film is still in a rough state.

    I am a graphic designer and I want to learn video editing. I'm not saying graphic design is easy, but I realize that video editing is a completely different skill
