    On my personal bikes, I put ball bearings in without the cages to get extra bearings in. It rolls better and lasts longer. Doing it that way you are depending on the grease to hold all the bearings in while you are trying not to knock them off while putting the fork through. I do it over a towel so if a bearing falls out it won't go bouncing and I will find it. I don't remember how many extra bearings I could get in the headset, one bearing on the rear wheel, and two bearings on the front wheel, it was three or four on the bottom bracket and headset. I would do the whole bike. It's easy but if one bearing falls out start over and try it again. Cages are made for quick assembly you don't really need them. I think my mid-70s Rally Sport when I was a teen didn't have cages from the factory. The bottom bracket is the hardest one to go cageless because the one-piece crank is bent it's hard to feed it through without knocking off bearings, One side at a time I get the spoket side first then the left side. It's easier not to do cageless the bottom bracket.

      @@thebasementbikeshop2336 I'm not a mechanic. These are tips I got from my uncle who owned a bike shop when I got that Rally bike and the bike shop nearby does this too. It has more pros than cons. After doing thousands of miles commuting I think it makes a difference. Going cageless might be a good subject for you to make a video on.

    Fantastic video! I've been learning to wrench, mostly on my mountain bikes. Between park tool and GMBN they cover a ton of stuff. However, I recently decided to restore my old bmx. Most of the videos for bmx are grainy 4:3 from eons ago. Your videos have clear picture and audio, are explained simply and effectively. Every time I google something related to bmx it leads me to your channel! Thanks for the content.

      Yes! As long as the size matches up. So a 1" threaded can be converted to 1" threadless. You just need a new headset stem and fork. The same with 1-1/8" threaded

    • @thebasementbikeshop2336
      @thebasementbikeshop2336  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A normal threadless fork and headset are 1-1/8" and a threaded is usually 1". They do make a 1" threadless fork, headset, and stem. That is, i know they did make one last time i did a conversion. (Note: some threaded headset bikes are 1-1/8" threaded but 1" is more common.)
