Oh my god, Feng. You are saving my life right now, and inspiring me left and right. Wish I could go to school at FZD. Seems amazing. Keep up the absolutely amazing work.
Really liked this tutorial, this one was great. Fair simple, looks like something I could do. I'll have to try this kind of thing out, because you know I try to create those massive scenes with a lot of cool stuff happening, or a lot of textures and rendering and all that stuff, but this seems more basic, more my level. i think it could help to refine my take on this entire digital painting stuff.
It looks like he's using the Adjust > Levels command to lower the contrast (grey out the details) so that brighter highlights and darker shadows can be applied. After that, a color dodge layer to apply highlights (since dodge tends to scale values and saturation while preserving the art beneath). Using a separate layer just makes it so he doesn't have to commit to the layer that has all the detail so far. only about 90% certain that's what's happening.
Great tute! Great timing! Been out of the game a while, returning and searching for concept art and silhouettes, this is exactly what I needed. Well inspired now!
@lucaddragon yea! It would be so cool to see Feng Zhu take on that challenge. Some creatures from norse mythology, vikings or something like that. Thanks for the upload! Really inspiring work.
I love your vids! Thing is though that I get discouraged when trying it myself cause I don't really know how to work with the layers and which brush settings to use..
Whenever I'm drawing something in front of people they always ask 'what are you drawing?' and every time i give them the answer of i don't know lol. For a while i thought is it just me that has no idea what I'm drawing before it's finished? And i guess it's a design tactic! Excellent tutorial, i always enjoy your work
I think even Giger commented on it, for example, if I remember correctly, front part of the head with the mouth is essentially a tweaked head of a horse - and it was a conscious decision, not even a spontanious visual library pull which happened on the spot.
Thank you so much for this Feng! You have the most consistent art tutorial channel on youtube. If I had the means to be at your school, I would be there in a second!!
Maybe you figured it out by now. I think he mentioned not using the pressure sensitivity for opacity. He said he likes to control it by setting it to a certain value.
The FZD Design Cinema Contest deadline is approaching soon. Be sure to submit your entry by September 30, 2013 to win a trip to Singapore. Good luck to you all~~
On the contrary, Giger is maybe the most famous of artists that tweak and combine real creatures, use known organic forms etc. to create original designs. I mean, it's what he's known for. Exactly the opposite from what you wrote.
When designing smart creatures, adding hands is a good idea. The hands are the marks that set human beings apart from animals. They are what we use to manipulate the world, and as such, are commonly associated with intelligence, Kind of like how Spikes and Skulls are commonly associated with evil. It just adds to the viewer's first impression on your character, that split second where they decide whether this guy seems smart or dumb. Just putting that out there for those who are curious.
I see what he means by saying that the designer doesn't know what a silhouette is until you add some detail. I thought that the 2nd figure was more of a rhinoceros than a turtle until he started shading it in, and I'm usually pretty good at looking at shapes and seeing something in them.
Wow that one that he was working on at the start of this video looks like a mix between a robot, a monster out of Resident Evil, and a charger from Left 4 Dead
Feng "THE CONCEPT ART SPEED MACHINE ",,,,I have uer previous vidz of the same which u done for Gnomon , i felt only one difference betwn , u explained much better in Gnomon vid ,,,,
Hello sir, I'd like to ask what exactly is going on at 5:13? I'm seeing a silhouette of the creature, on top is another layer with the color dodge at the blending mode. I tried to follow during the presentation on Photoshop CS5 and didn't get the same effect you did. Not sure of what's going on. Please help.
It's bad to design something new because it's weird and has no reference to reality? You mentioned Alien being based on real creatures. I think that design of the Alien is utterly out of reality. H.R.Giger designed it, if you look at his work, there is no reference to reality at all,and his work "is" well known. So my point is, you should encourage unique designs. An article about the unique creatures habits would be a nice addition though. Btw I liked your clip, keep it up!
Those thunder strikes sounded awesome Feng!
*hears thunder* You better save, man. Just to be safe.
I'm extremely grateful you put these up for free. Thank you x100

i think this video really shows best in which way you build the detail! gonna try that too

I think even Giger commented on it, for example, if I remember correctly, front part of the head with the mouth is essentially a tweaked head of a horse - and it was a conscious decision, not even a spontanious visual library pull which happened on the spot.
This was awesome. I'd love to see more character stuff like this. Thank you for posting these!
Man, your videos are very, very helpful. Thanks a lot.
Thanks, Feng! Awesome work.
@ESDigitalArt He's using the normal round brush, lighter opacity and a layer above the art with the layer set to 'Color'.
Beautiful work.
Thanks for this, I've had a bad creative block recently, but your video has really helped.
YES!!! I love rain as well... Ombrophile
Thank you so much for this Feng! You have the most consistent art tutorial channel on youtube. If I had the means to be at your school, I would be there in a second!!
I love your drawing so much!

This is Awesome!Sir thanks for sharing!
Great Job...very inspired....thanks for your tutorial... for wich company do you work??? :) thanks a lot...
Feng thanks for the videos i have learned a lot, I have a question though which brushes do you use?

Thank you for all of this videos, you rock!
rain gives you the feeling that you want to stay in and do something inside thats probably why
Amazing video, cheers for the insight! true master at work.
great vid, thank you for sharing your creative insights hehe, btw what brush set are you using? Or are you using custom brushes?
How do you get the paint strokes to blend in so well? do you mess around with the opacity?
I could listen to u teach all day :p a+
i absolutly love the turtle guy
I see what he means by saying that the designer doesn't know what a silhouette is until you add some detail. I thought that the 2nd figure was more of a rhinoceros than a turtle until he started shading it in, and I'm usually pretty good at looking at shapes and seeing something in them.
One person who dislikes this vid, is envy of his masterpiece artwork
Wow that one that he was working on at the start of this video looks like a mix between a robot, a monster out of Resident Evil, and a charger from Left 4 Dead
hey. In episode 34 he explains his brush setup. I was just watching it.
THANKS FENG! your videos rule!
cool stuff but guy number threes arms are dimensioned so they cannot reach his mouth.so what are their function,? makes you wonder.
Hello, someone knows if Mr. Feng use the pression of the tablet in his strokes, or just the opacity percent on the basic brush?? thanx.
I like the turtle dude!
thnx drawn. i'll give this a go.
"Something creative about rain..." I think I like you, man. I've never put that into words.
Maybe Singapore is for me? ;)
Very Cool!
Feng "THE CONCEPT ART SPEED MACHINE ",,,,I have uer previous vidz of the same which u done for Gnomon , i felt only one difference betwn , u explained much better in Gnomon vid ,,,,
I love raining season in asia, damn i miss home so much!
@ParkourRockStar I mean when selecting those doted lines appeared in photoshop how did he do it?
When you draw here, is this real time ?
Its not real time he said its around an hour
hey I am just wondering, what brushes are u using for these
what size canvas do you use when drawing them???
Hey i was just wondering what your brush settings where?

As a singaporean, WHERE DO YOU LIVE THAT THE THUNDER IS THAT LOUD WTF. (Toa Payoh here)
really u r a good teacher.. :)
I can make somewhat alright silhouettes but I can't paint them in
What you say is completly illustated to me by the fact i saw that "turtle guy" more like a Rhino when it was only black paint.
What should be the brush specs for painting in that style?
Well now I need to learn how to shade haha
Rain is a great ambient, if it doesn't rain much where you live - rainymood : com is awesome.
Haha *Feng details lighting pattern on the monster and a lighting strike flares off in background* coincidence?
thanks for the comments everyone :)
how do you do the light, when i try i looks really bad
your silhouettes look much like my finished art XD
holy snot you're amazing
"People see turtles, they know what they do."
Thanx!
that turtle guy is beast
What would be this guy's job title?
i love the turtle guy
Thunder buddies!!! TED!!!
Hahaha. But. . . I think he went down with the Brush opacity thingy. . . cause it creates that overlapping shady-ish effect. . .
I always mess up on when doing these i always get the value part messed up
Thunderstorms are nice for work? The first thing I do when I hear thunder is turn off and unplug all of my electronics lol
anyone know how he select the creatures as a whole?
nice. thanks :)
Thor is kinda amazed :D
Dead space is wacky, and easy to understand
1:38 i died of loling XDDD
your thunder storms are scary D:
He doesn't live in Indonesia! He lives in Singapore xD
i can see this guy in mass effect
1:39 - The monsters of hell does not approve this.
number 3 should be blue :P
1:57. Hard to mess up? Challenge accepted.
