Design Cinema is probably the most valuable Concept Art info/advice and it's totally free, no ads too. I keep reminding myself not to take it for granted. Thank you and anyone else involved Feng.
I was 20 - i watched Feng and got inspired and learn, now im 36 and im still watching this legend, still get inspired and learn. Weird thing Feng didnt look any older! Ihope i will be around in 65, and Feng will still teaching, still look this good!
Hey Feng, no one would have words enough to thank you for sharing gold information like this one for free. Thank you so much! I hope to see in episode 115, you taking that project of episode 113 and showing us the Finishing, rendering and presentation aspect of some of those designs! I dont mind a 7 hour episode btw Hahahahaha! Thanks again, Feng! You're the man!!
These are the things that should be talked about in classes and universities. If you know how to manage money flow, you know how to sustain a business. You sustain a business well, you sustain careers and build long-term stability for artists and designers. And I absolutely have to agree with you in hiring a producer/manager if you hate managing excel spreadsheets, producing invoices, and looking through contracts.
This episode was super informative!! Thank you so much for your videos, Feng! I also have been enjoying Cara, the community there is very positive and inspiring. It does feel like old-time forums. It was really nice to see you there!
I work on a completely different area, neither am I planinng on opening a concept design studio BUT your videos are sooo insightful and are packed with so much experience. Thank you!
This is really interesting. Not for me though, but it's always good to know what's going on inside a studio. Props for everyone who own their own studio! Thank you for sharing this insightful information :) I can't wait for ep 115
Hi Feng, thank you very much for all this content. I have been studying on your website trying to do the assignments you give your students. Pleaseeeeeee, I know you have already communicated that you don’t want to do FZD online because in person is better. But please, give us only two intense comprehensive courses you teach at FZD on “perspective and sketching”, I don’t care how much it cost just please only those two courses. I have been trying for hours to study and do the perspective assignments you give to your students. And I’m afraid my knowledge fall short, and I can’t seem to find anything that can help construct and sketch in perspective like you students do. Pleasssseeee thank you
This is very interesting, its almost exactly like what I have seen with my dad and his construction company. Similar issues with budgeting so you make a profit at the end of the project, finding and managing people. Everyone is through a referral, get your masons, carpenters, plumbers and electricians, equipment operators and mechanics to bring and manage their own people. its your responsibility to keep people on tract so you don't go over what ever your quotation was. It's project management no matter where you are working.
Thanks Feng! Great video even if you're not gonna start a studio, valuable insight about the industry that you don't really see being shared in such detail
Let's go!! Edit: I had to pause the video for a bit to let sink in that EA's shady business practices were once again the source of yet another artist's revolution. Edit 2: Thank you Feng! Safe travels and eagerly awaiting your next video!
What do you think about Abode's new change in their Terms of Use: "Section 4.2: Licenses to Your Content. Solely for the purposes of operating or improving the Services and Software, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free sublicensable, license, to use, reproduce, publicly display, distribute, modify, create derivative works based on, publicly perform, and translate the Content....etc." It seems extremely concerning; can you tell us your thoughts on this and have any of your clients shared their concern with the possibility of their IP being seen and used by Adobe.
This is amazing contents, thanks so much! However the hardest part of starting a business in this field is where/how to get leads, would be great if you could talk a bit about the "finding clients" aspect of it
I’m coming up on 5 years working in Visual Effects and I’ve been prepping for the industry bounce back. I never thought about opening my own studio because I hate handling money and getting clients tho. Maybe I should look into hiring a manager / producer…. and finding some startup capital. I got into this industry because of the Design cinema (started watching in 2012ish) so now I’m definitely thinking of starting my own studio.
Thank you sir, Feng Zhu for teaching us❤. Happy teacher's day po❤️. I think sir I can you compare to an Intercontinental Nuclear Ballistic Missiles of China named Dong Feng that can destroy all and defeat us by your wonderful art thank your sir.
tis is great info, i;ve seen a lot of my peers willy nilly opens up a design studio and fail so hard, getting zero client. hopefully this would help them out
Hands down one of the most diversed and down to earth educators online! Every video is packed with priceless lessons in life, art/design and business. Feng you are single handedly changing the lives of thousands, when you talk, we grab a coffee or three and listen!
Awesome video, if you ever need an idea, maybe a video about advancing your career when your a middling freelancer would be cool, haha. I'm guessing it's mainly 'get better', but you probably have some deeper insights into how to do that.
I'm assuming this is open to anyone. My guess is that you have to be in the relationship pipeline. Getting there often happens organically or by pushing your way in via research and persistently pursuing leads and opportunities without being overbearing. Essentially think of how you know a gal/guy who knows a guy/gal. #networking
Personal Notes -When thinking about design, also think about how much the design would cost to build -“Everything after a downfall goes up”, BE PREPARED -FZD studio does not go to artstation, and portfolio sites to hire people, unless they cannot find anyone else. -Personality actually matters when it comes to design, because there might be disagreements regarding the vibes/ themes between the art directors and his peepos - Not meeting deadlines is another factor, stop being too slow -Take responsibility, satisfy all the requirements. -More workloads more money, but more stress which might influence quality. -Balance budget and schedule, allocate money per day, per month this video is just so concise that i dont even need to take notes, the clarity is just crazy. Time to stop here i guess.
Awesome insight, sir; as a small indie studio that does services in comics and 2D animation production, how does one get into 2D game assets? I mean like how do we get leads or clients?
FZD rules! That said, is there any other channel/course/person that comes close to Feng's delievery in terms of love and knowledge, but with content revolving more around character/creature design rather than environments and hard surfaces?
56:20 $300/day for junior designers? thats almost $6500/month at this rate. is that wage or an overall cost (taxes, equipment, insurance, including non-production workers costs here etc.) are you sure? or am i tragically underpayed - i dont even get half of it as an experienced artist ))
Freelance sometimes don't have work, so the rates are a little higher. For EU, salaried junior or even mid-level is less than 5k/month but senior can definitely be more than 6500 even for salaried.
@@aeonbreak4728 thanks. i don't know that because i live outside eu/us. my same-level experienced colleagues (3-5 years of experience) in poland, spain, uk have it like 55-65/year, that is lower than average, according to your info.
@@iFukuyama thanks! "junior freelancer" sounds like a paradox to me. usually you do not start freelancing until you have some decent skills to get you hired.
Thanks for the new video but let's be real here how many people do you know who has bought PS5 or the Xbox series X? I'm pretty sure no one could f get one.
I don't want to start a studio but maybe be a member of one... (No one cares work harder) I'm flashing back to a project mgt. class. You have internal customers and external ones....
I was wondering, how feasible is it to get such a good salary? I mean, you're Feng and a great designer, but i don't often hear about such good compensations from other concept artists in the industry. You're talking about 900 $ per day for a junior, that's a lot man! Am i wrong knowing that juniors usually take 1500-2800 dollars a month, at most? (Thank you really much for your video)
In the video he said 300 for a junior. But I mean his circles can see his videos, they're public, so if he lies about what he pays his employees they'll let him know.
No one does unless you enjoy stress for some strange reason. It is the nature of the pipeline and most of it has to do with practical demand and the inefficiency of human energies. We have a limit to what we can do which do not often fall in line with the demands we place upon ourselves. If you've ever set out to accomplish a solo mission that takes a great deal of effort then that'd be your barometer for understanding how pressure changes when you add scale and more humans to the mission. You've introduced an infinite amount of variables that affect the outcome.
That demand chart shared at the beginning helps to understand trends as far as demand in the market. What do you think will happen in the consumer space over the next 5-10 years to drive demand for content so that the spectrum of opportunities meet expansion for both studios budget and it's technicians(designers/artist/directors)? @FZDSCHOOL #FZDSchool
I think my idea is less of a studio and more of a system, cause obviously the system has to change. (NCSACCS). I'm just gonna release art under this. It's proof of concept and I have a donation button just to give a choice. I can release great art without money.

@Feng Looking forward to the next episode release!
Design Cinema is like an online university, but much better than most art and design universities.
and it's free
I learn more on these short hour long episodes than what I learned on 7 years at my University 😂❤

18:47 So if Art Directors just look for referrals 90% of the time, how does I get on that referral list?

Most of these rates are considered "high" because most of these studios are located in LA. Don't forget, LA's cost of living is incredibly expensive.
