    I love this btw. I think I like this more than extending a double crochet.🧶🥰

    Love this, but how would I do it for a half double crochet? Thanks

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Personally, I do it the exact same way for a half double crochet! Most of the time it blends in really well. Occasionally, it looks a smidgen taller than the half double crochet stitch depending on what yarn and hook size I'm using. In those cases, I just work the alternative turning chain stitch a little tighter than normal to make it a little shorter. Hope this helps!

    Is there an option for hdc? I use that stitch more often than dc or sc. 😳🤣

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I actually do the exact same process for hdc! I find that the height still works out pretty well and it blends right in. If you find the alternative turning chain ends up a little bit tall for hdc, try working the alternative turning chain extra tightly so it ends up a little shorter.

      Glad you enjoyed this video! I don't have a left handed version, but I have heard from other lefty crocheters that setting their phone or laptop facing a mirror and then watching in the mirror is a way they flip the image to get it to look the way it would for a lefty.

    Thank you for this video, it looks great. I was wondering how to incorporate this into a pattern I'm trying if you don't mind. It starts with ch 111, start in the 4th c and work across the row, so it ends with 108 plus the ch3 at the start. There is a ch3 starting each row. To use the alternate, would I just chain 109 instead, so I'd have the alt plus the 108 needed? I think that math is right but thought I'd ask before getting started. Thank you!

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! There's two main things to consider: does the turning chain count as a stitch? And how many stitches do you need to end up with for row 1?
      So in your example, if the 3 chs that get skipped count as a stitch, then row 1 would end up with 109 stitches. (108 "normal" stitches plus the ch3 counting as a stitch.) If the turning chain doesn't count as a stitch, then row 1 would have 108 stitches.
      Once you know how many stitches you need for row 1, you would make the foundation ch by chaining that many plus 1. (I should've shown in the video how to work the alternative turning chain into the foundation chain, but hindsight is 20/20 haha) To start working in the foundation chain, you would work the alternative turning chain stitch into the second chain from the hook. It gets kinda goofy if you try to work it into the ch next to the hook.
      So for your example, if you need to end up with 109 stitches in row 1, you would ch 109+1= 110chs. Then in the second ch from the hook, work the alternative turning chain. Then work one stitch in each of the remaining 108 ch for a total of 109 stitches (108 "normal" stitches plus the alternative turning chain stitch).
      Hope this explanation makes sense! Sorry it's so wordy lol

      @cathymartin3379 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CraftersAutonomous thanks, I worked out the math and I'm almost done the blanket. They did count the ch3 as the first stitch so I chained 109 and started the first row in the 2nd chain and all is good! Thanks again.

    I’m having such trouble with finding the last stitch ….I’ll try the turning one tho

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Something that helped me was to place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row! The first stitch of the current row will be the last stitch you work into for the following row. The stitch marker will show you exactly where to work. hope this helps!

    I love how the edges look! Curious how you start the first row? Start the same with the single into single?

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really just comes down to preference! I often start projects with a row of foundationless stitches, so if I was working a project with dc, my first row would be foundationless dc. If I am using a chain, I sometimes use a normal turning chain for the first row. But if starting with a chain, you absolutely can use the alternative turning chain.
      Let's say you wanted your first row of stitches to have 10 dc sts. Then you would chain 11 (1 chain more than the number of sts you want in your first row), and work the alternative turning chain into the 2nd ch from the hook. That would count as the 1st dc st, and there'd be 9 chs left. Then work 9 dc sts, and that would complete the first row. Hope that makes sense the way I described it!

  • @rozsavaria5122
    @rozsavaria5122 ปีที่แล้ว

    how do you start this? do you do the double stack of sc into the foundation?

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  ปีที่แล้ว

      So I start most of my projects with a foundationless stitch, so that's how I work the first row. But if I were starting with a foundation chain, you can work an alternative turning chain into the second chain from the hook... I've found it's easier to work it in the back numb of the chain though. Hope this helps!

  • @Desaundrea
    @Desaundrea 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does this alternative turning chain count as a stitch or does this still depend on your project parameters?

    • @CraftersAutonomous
      @CraftersAutonomous  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question! It really depends on the project, whether you want it to have a straight edge or whether you want it to have the "bumps" along the edge that a traditional turning chain would make. Personally, I like it best when I'm counting it as a stitch, because for me this solves some of the issues I have with a turning chain. I haven't done a project yet where I haven't counted this as a stitch, but that might be a cool idea to try! But regardless, if you are following a pattern and substituting this stitch in place of turning chains, you would count it the way the pattern says to (e.g. if the pattern counts the turning chain as a stitch, then you would count this as a stitch and vice versa).
