As requested, Fade to Grey. There are some mistakes, but if everything were right, I would be Billy Currie :D.
Above: Roland JX8P
Mid: Roland D10
Below: Yamaha DX7 II FD
Backtape running on Pro Tools
Original song composed by Chris Payne, Billy Currie and Midge Ure (and a special mention to Steven Strange, despite he wasn't officially credited on the album, IIRC)
Performed (more or less) here by DX5 Jose Maria Bara
I lived in the 80's... Music was expensive and many of us couldn't afford to buy singles, so we "downloaded" (the new word for "recorded") from the radio, together with DJ background voices and commercials!
There is such magic in those chords. :-)
I play piano and keyboards and I know music and composr and I think exactly the same.
It Is rare and also strange in this piece of Visage but it is so!
Simple a minor
I'd forgotten how great this song is and you play it beautifully.
absolutely brilliant
This is amazing. I’ve gone from watching drum covers to now seeing lots of versions of this great track. Thank you
As an Ultravox fan, and an admirer of your work, it's nice to see you mention the legend that is Billy Currie
Same reason as you saving a 1991 Alan Wilder video as your favourite. I love old things.
dude. love to see a bloke playing his gear, not just arguing about which is best. i tip my hat to you.
mistakes are so insignificant after all, hats off man, great job!!!!
The mistakes add a charm.
I wish I could do half as good
Bravo !
R.i.p. Steve Strange
Recherche
Thanks.
Yes, the D-10 really worths by that sound. Also has another 80's sounds. It is a programmable rompler (which doesn't like to some synth players) but I like it very much.
Always find myself back here from time to time, Superb stuff
You nailed it mate.
i love both versions of this song that you have done!! All the emotional power is there that was in the original song plus the enjoyment of watching you play. I also enjoy the change in sound when you switch from the DX7 to the D10 near the end. Thanks for all the great videos!!
I love these covers, they're so true to the originals. Can't remember the last time I saw a 4 finger chord.
... after so many years, the folks know how to play "Fade To Grey" ...
Perfection ❤❤❤❤
No me canso de escuchar esta linda melodia.. Me transporta.!!!
outstanding hope you enjoyed playing it as we did to listen to it, thanks for sharing such a great 80's classic
Thank you for doing this! You make it seem so simplistic, lots of pinky and thumb work there on the JX! Im going to devour my friend's synthesizer in a few days and give this a shot! I was born when this song came out!
99 % perfect !!! Congratulations !!!!
It sounds almost like the original... Incredible !
Its always nice to see these vintage synths been shown some love :-)
Thank you for introducing me to this song. You are an awesome player.
Nice channel mate, love how many new wave and 80s synth you have. Amazing skills.
Hey, Me, What a brilliant interpretation of an eighties classic, well done and keep them coming.
Your vintage synth collection is amazing!!!! congratulations!! i do have myself a DX7 and some other modern pieces.. but you are the man!
I just found your videos this week and am so hooked!!!
Perfect !!! I cant stop watch it.. one of the best Electro/Synth Pop Song
What a great version! Sounds are amazing, well done!
Whenever I her the song in radio or wherever...I see you playing!!!!
One of the best covers ever! thx
Simplemente.. Extraordinariiiooo... Seco. Saludos desde Linares-Chile.
Saludos desde España!
i am in awe...i could comment on every video of yours. so great!
I loved Visage. This song was so brilliant and so much more than the sum of its parts. That vox humana synth bass sound was brilliant. I liked the drum machine and the weird lyrics. The whole piece was superb.
I do agree. The original is utterly brilliant.
I suffer from Depressions... but when I see/hear you... THANK YOU"
This is brilliant! I cannot stop sing a long. Thank you, you're amazingly talented
Frickin unbelievably awesome! I love that D10 as well :D
Thanks for covering one of my favorite 80s dance hits.
The one I played in the middle is a Roland D10. A ROMpler from the 80's. It did the job of recreating that synthetic pad.
You should be able to find one of those (Or the D20, same but with sequencer and diskette drive) on Ebay.
Best,.,
DX5
From a fellow keyboardist who plays 80's riffs all the time, that was very ambidextrous.
Well done!!!
Very nice. Very, Very nice indeed. Love the sound from the JX8P. And the D10 sounds grat aswell. Awesome job. Post more
Hey DX5, I listen to this three times every week, what a brilliant piece of work, considering no mixing desk, producer etc.....
hi dx5!
I love (new romantic) synth-pop tunes from the 80s. Your remakes have much of the feel from this time - very nice &
thanx!
Yes. It is a portamento effect, previously recorded with the DX7 and a simple sine sound. Same sound used at 1.16
¡Maestro de los teclados, divinoooooooo! Luna llena.
You have a perfect music taste, it's enormous work to play so great!
I'm so happy I've found your channel. Greetings from Poland :)
omgf this is amazing man... i love visage and the early 80s stuff and you have this track nailed kidda....
10 outta 10 fella and when i get my synths i hope i can come somewhere even close to this... top man
hats off to you, well done, timeless synth, fab! Keep the spirit alive
Very good sound for this track.
And thank you very much for all tracks of DM.
why do so many criticise when this guy is awesome at reproducing this incredible song ??? Respect !!!!!!!
@markyspark67 dear marky: I am more than happy with critics always they are not repetitives and seeming like orders "upload the videos with not mistakes..". As told, I upload things caught on the fly, I am not releasing these covers, just spending a while between works in my studio. If critics are "you are semitones off" on a track played on its original key...
Enano eres una maquina tio!!! esta genial, los fallos son mínimos, lo que importa es que mantienes absolutamente bien los acordes y el ritmo!! BESTIAL TIO!!
I totally enjoyed it.Got to love those chords your playing with the synth in the middle.
I will cover it for sure. I was thinking about that song months ago. One of my favourites. I even have the vinyl.
Thanks
THUMBS UP! Innovation, Motivation, Domination...!!! Music par Excellence! Personal development and human sense of art at its best. Body and motion, sound and expression have naver been so clean and impeccable. Truly amazing, truly impressive!
You’re doing this live, just makes it more realistic. Wish I had the gifts of a musician.
Thanks. This version was primitive, there are a couple else I made a bit more elaborated (but not much) :)
Awesome!!! I am really impressed. Great work and keep posting these great clips, please...
Mistakes proves that a someone is playing and not bullshitting.... well done great effect.... Saved to favs.
fantastic
Super wykonanie!!!!!!
brilliantly done and thoroughly enjoyable!! I have no musical talent at all but I am a good listener and I think that all of the "me playing" vids are great! Its too bad none of the music today has the substance or imagination of the 80s.
rip steve strange this is number 1 trk in my heart i hope u can here this in heaven
Isso é mágico!!! se todo o mundo parasse e ouvisse música o mundo seria muito melhor!!! Ass Brasilian man
Thats Great, It takes me straight back to my clubbing days in the 80's. The old keyboards still sound fantastic.
i thought it was the original when i heard it without screen, well done mate,as im old enough to remember it!!
Well done, Super! Great song brings back à lot of good memories from the 80's
nice perfomance! =)

Steve
Damn!!! you are good. One of my favorite tunes..you have talent..I miss the 80s sound...
I love this, after watching couple of your movies you're in my favourites :-)
Fkin great!
at least he has the sound spot on, thats the hardest part, is recreating the same sound they had. And this is amazingly spot on.
Excdellent job! One of my fave songs and I wish I could play like that. I want a Roland D-10...that pad sound is just what I need.
That gave me goosebumps, truly amazing.
Fantastic with your own special touch
Amazing version....subscribed to your page. Love your work
well done,,classic song from the 80s,,loved it,,,
Even though there are some mistakes, I still think this is amazing!
Fantastic cords, classic played well
Superb! Takes me straight back to 1980!
it was dave formula from Magazine playing on the original fade to grey and the synths
were prophet 5 and yamaha ss30 /solina and the mini , Currie was heard on the other album tracks like visa-age and tar
nope, chris payne (tubeway army) & bill currie played all the synth and the bassline is a polymoog
lot more on there than polymoog alone, the opening churchorgan sound is one of the prophet factory patches, there's minimoog for the sweeps , currie played mostly on the album the odyssey fed through his mesaboogie guitaramp, midge did all the vocals on the album first as guide tracks for
steve strange since he could not keep a tune :), tle fact that payne was credited probably
had to do that currie was on tour with numan at that stage , a very oddball collaboration that album
you got the bassline tone nailed down with that JX. wow
Bravo! This song is one of the best ever and your performance is not bad.
I love your cover version of Visage “Fade to grey” very much indeed well done you”
