Hey all! Thanks for checking out this video, and let me pin this up top bc I already know this will be mentioned the first week this video is live lol. Yes, I am fully aware it's going to be insanely hot this week. Yes, I even know it will hit 100 likely on Wednesday. Even more of a reason to see if over seeding can be done TOO early, and can humidity and heat play a factor in germination? We'll all find out together! I'll be out watering all week to do my best to be successful. Thanks for watching.
You are a brave man seeding with the temps we are getting this week. I live in southern Virginia between Martinsville and the VA/NC border I don’t even want to mow this week due to the heat. I have 2 large bare spots that total about 2500 sq feet that I am targeting mid September it has the hard clay soil that I will need to till and add an amendment to. I noticed Walmart has the cheapest price on peat moss $8 for a 2.2 cu ft bale. Good luck through the heat this week
You need to buy a leaf mulcher for spreading that peet moss. Put the moss in a wheelbarrow, suck the peet from the bottom and remove the blow tube on the side and turn it on and you can spray that stuff quick. You can spread about five full size bags in about 30 min.
Love the video once again! I mowed low and dethatched yesterday. I’m going to hit it again a day before overseeding in the next couple of weeks. Hope your lawn turns out great this fall!!
Well done young man! I remember being about to work that hard and long. I'm 65 now and have been fighting Crohn's disease for 25 years and it has just taken my stamina away with my body fighting it every day for all these years. I don't have one of those rollers but I'm like you I have to watch my spending so I'll not be getting one but I like it even if it's the smaller one. I'd say I would have to get the smaller one just to be able to roll it around. I'm right behind you in timing. My plan is to seed Sept 5th so I will be plugging and such before that. Thanks and get so food and rest brother. LOL God bless
Mr Ferguson I enjoy your videos. Thanks for the content. I hope you have better luck than I did last fall, overseeding without aeration, here in north Georgia. I also used GCI TTTF, but with no aeration I had my worst germination rate ever. Luckily I went back over the weak areas manually & top dressed with potting soil/sand & leftover seed then got germination. I’ll be aerating and overseeding here on Friday. Good luck. Thanks again for the videos.
We will all find out together lol. This is another reason I'm a praying man, haha. This is by far the riskiest overseeding project I've ever attempted, so we will see what happens.

Yeah, I have my order of GCI TTTF arriving on Wednesday ❤. I'm looking to have my Overseeding done this weekend 👍🏽👍🏽 Got to get me a peat moss spreader
Looks great Mr. Ferguson. I drove to Reidsville this past Friday and picked up a 45 lb bag of the new GCI TTTF blend. I don’t have enough RGS, so I’m need to order it and GreenePop fertilizer. I’m good with Propiconazole, but my Tenacity is probably over 4 years old, so I don’t know what it’s efficacy is at this point. I think I’ll wait until at least weekend after next to do mine. It was early October when I got seed down after full renovation last fall and it came out ok. Maybe I’ll catch some Jesus juice by waiting. There is. I sign of rain in the next 10 days here in Concord, NC and in the 90s and upper 80s most of that time.
Man I feel your pain on being exhausted! I used the scarifier, raked, and added compost through that same spreader and it kicked my butt! Our mind still thinks we are 18 but the body reminds us we aren’t.
Nice workout you did will be doing overseed soon also . Next time, drop the peat on drive way to loosen it up and put in wheel borrow. That why your moving the wheel barrow not the peatmoss .
I did oder a pet moss roller. I didn't spend and get the one you did because of money. I'm hopping ok praying it will be fine?? I'm old and slow so I'm thinking about buying a smaller mesh wire and put on the inside of the roller to slow the coming out down. I'll use wire to attach it. I'll let you know if and how it works.
I just cut my backyard down to 2" & spread about 4 lbs of TTTF seed down, watered for 20 minutes. Gonna be watering 20 minutes every 6 hrs, 6 am/noon/6 pm, for next 3 days Until it suppose to rain.
I overseeded 10 days ago with GCI ttf. It came up at day 4. Day 7 i put down 6-21-16. The new blend is very dark. Ive learned a long time ago not to put down fert until most of the germanation has occurred. This allows the baby grass time to catch up with existing. I was worried as well with the heat coming. Before i overseeded i had my watering on at full tilt and haven't stopped. I plan to be on the verg of overwatering everyday till it cools off. I have never watered my fescue as much as i have this year. But it has paid off, my grass never went dormant. Been dark green and mowing 2-3 times per week since April. My water and fungicide bill is stupid high this year. Strange weather patterns this year in east Tennessee. You will be fine if you just keep those spigots on
Yea I might try the delayed fert spread myself next year, or actually up at our project lawn. Seems logical, IF you have the time to come back later and apply it days later. Thanks for commenting!
Supposed to be 100 degrees Wednesday. I'm waiting. Did my dethatch Saturday and top dressed with leafgro. Friday looking good to seed and fertilize. 18 holes ehhh. Nobody walks and carries their bag like I used to when I was your age. They didn't do it then either! Lol
How big is your front yard and how many bales of peat moss did you need for it? This will be my 1st time using peat and your yard looks about same size as mine.
7 days ago I spread compost on my lawn in the Asheville NC area and overseeded it with GCI Turf type tall fescue and Tuckahoe Farms Kentucky Bluegrass seeds. I’ve been watering it frequently and lightly to keep the seeds moist. Now I’m noticing 3 to 5 inch white circles on the compost. I think it is actinomycetes from the compost. Is this something I should be concerned about hurting my lawn? Should I treat it with fungicide(s)? If so which fungicides? I've just changed my watering to less run time and also the last run time of the day has been moved to earlier in the day so it won't be so wet all night. Thank you in advance for your advice.
@@lisao9677 Hmmm. Did you put down tenacity or Meso herbicide like me? It turns grass white for awhile, but other than that I’m not really sure Lisa. Fungus is possible still. I’d watch it and maybe cut back on water a bit. Honestly I’m not sure what that could be! :/
If you need to rent an aerator I strongly suggest a stand on aerator. Site One in High Point has a Lesco stand on aerator with seeding box that they rent for $175 a day. I would gladly spend an extra $75 over the Ryan which goes for about $100 from HD. It is much less work and a lot faster. You would just need a trailer to transport
It will be interesting to see if seeding at higher temps actually promotes more/better growth and if it's successful. I generally do all my aerating, dethatching, etc myself but this year I'm hiring out the more labor intensive work and will just throw down my seed, fert, and other goodies a bit closer to October. Looking to do a full renovation in a couple weeks with GCI TTTF and been watching your videos so thanks for posting your progress! Question though, how many bales of 3cu ft pete moss will cover 1000 sqft?
Any chance you might consider growth regulator to hold your grass lengths down for a couple weeks? Not a necessity and yes your RGS has Kelp which does some of that.
Hello Mr Ferguson, Can you also make a video about your backpack sprayer setup and the nozelle that you use. I also watched your older videos where you have put down Triple threat by southern seeds. My question is to know if it is recommended to mix grass seeds type from one tear to other
If you are doing turf type tall fescue, I honestly think most brands will all blend together just fine. I have a multitude of varieties in my front lawn, and as you can tell it all looks pretty much the same. From GCI TTTF, to Triple Threat, to Cool Blue, to even some Jonathan Green Solar Green mixed in there as well.
I found it's cheaper to go to my local county green waste facility and get their compost. It's $25/yd where I'm at. I can fit three yds in the back of my dually. I shovel it into my Gorilla cart and then wheel it to where it needs to go in my yard. Then shovel it into the spreader and away we go. Peat moss is such a PITA to work with. Too dusty.
At 16:14 - how wide is your driveway? Looks like a good amount of space and I'm trying to expand my 1-car into a 2-car, not sure what width I want to go with
Hey Fergy, You are the man! That's a lot of work for one day! Especially after 18 holes..sure hope you used a cart and didn't walk 18! Question...did you fill up your back pack sprayer with 4 gallons of water? That wasn't shown in the video..my 4 gallon back pack is so heavy with 4 gallons I can hardly get it on my back ..also did you use marker dye? Thanks man! You will sleep good tonight!
@@qsbroom Yes, full 4 gallons, but with my nozzles I mix it for an output of 8k sq ft, so I walk fast and cover the entire 8k sq ft lawn with a 4 gallon mix
Eh, maybe. I notice when you get on hills or make turns, it wants to move the material to one side, which isn't ideal. It's a learning process I got better at as I went along for sure.
Hey folks, if you take a soil test and it says you don’t need more phosphorus then use a phosphorus free fertilizer. I love my lawn, but we have to be responsible.

@@MrFergusonLawnmy sprinkler of choice is the Orbit tripod which has the impact head removed and replaced with a Rainbird 5000 pop up head they are easily adjusted and with the largest nozzle is capable of 1” of water in an hour
Totally depends on how thin or thick you lay it down. That's really my best answer. Honestly, you can't buy TOO much peat moss. There are always areas you want to cover, but it's what you can afford, not what you need really.
Thanks for your response. I’m here in Mooresville and parts of my lawn checked out as well. I’ve been using GCI TTF as well. This year I’m going with the Blueheat.
The spreader is nice for smaller yards but after using it once on a 10,000 sq ft yard. I’m probably going to rent the mechanical spreader( no it’s not cheap), and I’m far from making “good money” so that’s tells all.
I understand that. It wasn't so bad for this project, but being use to spraying more often than spreading, I hope I evenly got my fert laid out haha. #nostreaks
Actually, I ate showered, then grabbed my oldest daughter and hit Lowes. Needed to get that peat moss so I wouldn't have to go get it after church in my nicer clothes lol

Mr. F, you aren't concerned with the temps spiking into the high 90's this week? I know that you are going by soil temps, but it is going to be hard to keep that joker wet!
Not really, no. Is it ideal? Nope, but that's the fun in trying different projects (to me). Long as I keep it watered this week, I'm not the least bit concerned, and that's the honest truth.
@@MrFergusonLawn gotcha, my friend. I have had good luck germinating in high temps, so long as I kept the ground moist and so long as shortly after the heat spurt 4 - 5 days, it cooled down
@@MrFergusonLawn Yes, you will be fine. Did a small bare spot and got germination in 5 days and our temps are in the mid mid to high 90's. Like you said as long as you keep the water on it. I'm thinking of doing a early renovation this year also.
Man forget the peat moss. It is a moisture keeper but it’s just too much work for the the process. From one diy guy to another save as much of your yearly grass clippings keep them dry and use them if you need seed cover. Saves money and they actually break down over time to nothing as peat moss just builds up and can cause problems down the road.
LOL! On man I just did my lawn too. And I am very sore. I can see that same pain in your face. I can't afford to put down cover material like you. So what I do is use a Sun Joe electric scarifier to loosen the ground then rake in the seeds. Lot's and lot's of manual labor for sure. I'm feeling the pain with you. I'm testing out TTTF and one the thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't spread like KBG. I wish they would make something like that. The sun kills my grass every years and I hate have to re-seed it every single year because it doesn't spread. We need to invent a better cool season grass that won't die in our crazy summer heat months. The amount of money, time, and water spent on re-seeding is beyond stupid. There's got to be a better way to have grass.
For a beginner like me, would you kill off the old lawn before you do seeding? My lawn is full of weeds and multiple grasses. In your opinion, would it be better to start over to make a better, healthier lawn?

Totally depends on how thin or thick you lay it down. That's really my best answer. Honestly, you can't buy TOO much peat moss. There are always areas you want to cover, but it's what you can afford, not what you need really.
Why is the grass so patchy in some areas?
@@darrellw3962 What you are seeing is a Carolina fescue lawn after a historic and brutal summer. This is why we over seed.
#nostreaks
I don’t go lower than 2.5. My mower goes from 2.5 to 1.75 I just can’t do it!
PPE should be used with herbicides
I agree
Get you a REAL ORANGE GATORADE!!
@@chrisglenn2096 lol, that’s is again Chris. You make me laugh man haha

I did indeed
I bet you ate & fell asleep!!😴😴😴
Actually, I ate showered, then grabbed my oldest daughter and hit Lowes. Needed to get that peat moss so I wouldn't have to go get it after church in my nicer clothes lol

Did you dethach ?
