Great question. For classic (audio-only) podcasts, I often say that as long as you (the host) have a good microphone, then listeners are willing to forgive your guest’s audio quality because it literally sounds like someone calling into a radio show. So it makes sense to the listener, in a way, that your audio might be crisper than the guest.
For video, it’s similar, but I would add that it’s also up to your personal preferences. I think it would be tough to require guests to purchase a webcam, but it’s something you could suggest as an option. I would recommend checking out other channels or video experts to see what has worked or what they recommend. I hope that helps!
