I was given a Conditional Discharge aka Prohbation. I never served time in a prison. I completed my prohbation and am having trouble finding work. Had a great job lined up with the city and they found my record and denied me. I'm having trouble finding a job with minimum wage companies or any company that has a 3rd party screening or criminal record check.
I started my business with a $500 loan I paid a mentor to learn the business. I haven't stopped working since my felony conviction. I'm growing my business as we speak. With that said, I've gotten all my jobs using the proximity principle. My goal is to get in front of the decision maker and tell my story. Yes I get rejected alot but all I need is one person that believes in me. People love a good success story and they're willing to give people like us a chance. Take action and don't get discouraged. There is work for us we just have to work harder than the average person.
It should be illegal for companies to ask about prior convictions on an application. It prevents people who have already paid their debt to society from re-entering and becoming a productive member. Qualified workers aren't even given an interview once they check that box they're already disqualified. Removing that question at least gets them an interview which means they have an equal chance to get seen for the qualifications they have and a fair shot at a job.
It depends if you see prison as paying a debt. Some of us don't see it that way. I think that's just wording. The truth of the matter is people with criminal record represent a higher risk when it comes to hiring them, dating them or renting to them. The conviction represents a history of dumb decisions and likely a lack discipline.

It's that they shouldn't be able to put it at the top of the application and immediately throw out anyone who checks yes. At least give the person an honest shot at a job based on their full qualifications. We were all poor in the same schools and lived blocks away from each other. They're not products of their environment, they're products of bad choices. When have excuses ever helped anybody?
I know someone who got kicked out of college did a year in jail for a trafficking charge, had to get back into school, finished the degree then landed a great job at BMW on the management/ leadership track. They were upfront about the charge and how they turned their life around.

In the world of social media and currently bail reform. companies see you as a liability because if you did something they don't wanna be called out on social media for hiring people with a history. I can't work for Uber, Doordash, skipthedishses any of those. Ups, fedex ext.. I recently saw a volunteer role driving the elderly to get there stuff in a remote area i wanted to do and was denied due to record.
Get a good lawyer! Honestly the way she mentioned it sounds like he might be involved with law enforcement. DO NOT trust the system to do the right thing, do not take a plea, if it's involving a domestic issue many states will not let them ever be enpunged or sealed, you also may never be able to own a gun or get a job that requires a background check even if it is a misdemeanor. The only thing to even remotely consider would be something like disturbing the peace which is basically not more than a traffic ticket. Good luck on the job hunt plenty of opportunities bout there right now

Unfortunately attorneys are expensive. And public defenders usually are terrible. They don't even try at all in many cases. They usually want the client to just plead guilty. Because they don't care about how it will affect the person.

I'm mentally ill and have been arrested several times because of my mental illness. If I were to apply for a job, I have to put yes as convictions are in my permanent record. If the employer doesn't want to hire me because of that, it wasn't meant to be.
My ex wife has an actual criminal record for beating me with a weapon. Despite this she has gotten a $140K salary job with Freddie Mac and US citizenship. She just goes into a monologue about how it is all the man's fault when asked about her record. Each time, they choose to just trust her without looking into her story.

Eventually after people have been a menace long enough they will give them a year in prison for annoying the system long enough. He was pretty slick at his crime cars and knew how to fence items. This is early 90s he was busted. His business now is IT which he started around 2005. In between getting out of prison he started pumping gas and studied, changed jobs and worked his way up by having skills that employers valued. He essentially became as an amazing coder but also with good people skills - which is a rarity in the IT field.

I am sorry that this is so common. Right now, there's a trend in our society that likes to believe in an ideology of "women are just as abusive as men". In reality, male on female dv in intimate relationships is still, by far, the most common scenario. Yet because of this belief, women who are victims, are being arrested by false allegations. And dv victims encounter this type of thing more commonly than people realize. Dv advocates are familiar with this. So, I have empathy for her. Unfortunately, employers will almost always choose an applicant who doesn't have any criminal history, over someone who does, regardless of how or why or what happened. Even innocent people can have a criminal history because of their abusive relationship past, or other similar misfortune.
