Well not exactly… by that logic you’re completely discounting multiplayer games, party games, etc. It is true that any game can be fun with friends but when done right some are still much better than others.

Hi, Ex Far Cry 5 dev here.
I've always said it, we should be doing a Far Cry game with escape from tarkov gun modification system + difficulty of rainbow six/Tarkov.
Then add this to a cool setting and we could do anything.
Imo a grimdark setting would have been amazing.
Problem is, Far Cry is a big IP, ubisoft doesn't want to risk it so they do the same thing over and over again, proof : All past 3 far cry's have a ''go burn this field there'' mission type. etc etc.
Finally Ubisoft makes casual games, games that are a no brainer, a ''fun game''.
So while all your points are valid, this isnt the way ubisoft works and design videogames.

That is sad to hear. When a great company like Ubisoft decides to take the safe and easy route of making a safe game instead of taking significant risks for the sake of great art like Farcry 2 and 3 was. Fantastic video games I will never forget.

One of my big issues that I didn't hear addressed is the tone. The situations in these games are pretty dark and serious. However they are then juxtaposed with wacky characters and even wackier animal companions.
The series needs to lean more toward Far Cry 2 while also taking in some of your suggestions.

I would absolutely love if they could bring Far Cry back to a more grounded realistic setting and theme like FC2. The juxtaposition between serious and funny just doesn't work. I feel like most people are bashing new FC games because there is a lack of innovation now for a few years, not because they are actually inherently bad games? Its just that if you played one, you have basically played them all.

Not gonna happen. That's how Ubisoft make their games nowadays. They milk the hell out of it, make it as long and as bland as possible it can be. Assassin's Creed falls into the same problem. It's not even the studio fault at this point. It's just Ubisoft in general dictating how every game should be.

The problem for me with Ubisoft is that when they try something new and it’s successful, they quickly copy and paste it on the next game and not improve it. AC Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla are the same game. So if they do a Far Cry refresh for 7 for example, I’ll bet that 8 and 9 will be the same as 7.

I would recommend almost any Ubisoft game to a new gamer. The problem isn’t so much the quality but the repetition. If you’ve played 25% of one Ubisoft game, you’ve pretty much played them all.

These games are vastly different even if they use the same formula. you're telling me AC Valhalla, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and Far Cry 6 are the same game? not even close. don't get me started on other titles like the crew, for honour, and siege.
All that aside, this applies to every single developer out there. A rockstar game certainly feels like a rockstar game. A Bethesda game feels like a Bethesda game. FromSoftware as well and so on. And that's part of the appeal of these games as well. It offers a new experience on a tried and true formula by a reputable studio. I don't know why Ubisoft gets singled out, they consistently release absolutely beautiful and entertaining titles with a lot to offer.

Then there's obvious improvements like the massive increase of weapons and customization among other things.
I'm only a couple hours into FarCry 6 so that's all I've noticed so far. but to say 5 is the same as 6 is just dumb af. if anything it feels more like a callback to FC3. Either way it's a new experience

Color coded traversal has been plaguing games (and open world titles in particular) for more than a decade. It removes any excitement and reward from figuring out an environmental puzzle. @@DCXanatos With how complicated and detailed game worlds have become, color coded spots have become a crutch that devs use because figuring out an environmental puzzle without any cues would be frustrating for most players. I think I've seen a Tomb Raider dev blog discussing this very topic.
I remember turning the cues off in the last Tomb Raider game and you could still figure it out because it was still pretty obvious where you're supposed to go, most of the time due to the camera setup.

One thing they could do: STOP USING LEVEL GATING AS PROGRESSION.
Stuff like enemy health bars or other RPG like elements work better in games that are either fantasy or sci-fi settings, NEVER in "real-world" titles. I still can't get into the Division because of this issue. If you push these systems, then your game better be more like the first one where it's a bonkers 80-90s action flick, and less in-yo-face realism.
Farcry needs to be more immersive sim than RPG-lite. People want to discover and have fun. Not "grind" an activity for a stat point or custcene. Course, better scenario writing would also help too. Or maybe not pump so much into a story that you won't care about anyway, and focus on engaging gameplay more?

Hyping the game the location gets the most highlights. They went there, learned about the past, architecture, habits and all of that but when you play you are again in a sandbox with copy past location and what is there doesn't connect with the game.

Here's an idea for a Far Cry game. Same place as FC3, jungle with tall trees, no map, no objective markers, no hud. Map replaced by Tallneck like creatures. Markers being flares/smoke signals you can shoot VERY far away. HUD being always off. Weapons are never carried, they slow you down after an encounter. Your "NPCs" never stay in one place for long, their quests progress in real time. They can fail without your help, but sometimes they go better without you. The map does not have to be big, but it has to be thought out. A shorter path could be unlocked by the actions of one of your NPC if you catch them at the right place. Color of the smoke indicating which kind of NPC you meet. Some traps can be found in this case, with your enemy killing the NPC and stealing their smoke. The same smoke can be later found from one of the few surviving members of the ambush. ETC.

I really want to see them incorporate some of the ideas from the underrated Boiling Point: Road to Hell game. They seemed to a little bit in Far Cry 2 with weapons jamming and breaking. I want that to return, but also allow the player to remove and swap weapon mods and require that they find specific ammo to weapons not just generic "rifle" or "pistol". Survival in fights can get tense if your best gun runs out of ammo and the enemies are carrying something else. You can also use that in accordance with factions, maybe rebels prefer rifles with a certain ammo and government forces use others. Also I think you mentioned this but be more restrictive with inventory which I think makes the survival more visceral and stealth more required. I miss games like Boiling Point and it is a shame that some of their ideas never made there way to many other games, maybe Fallout a little bit. I can see a lot of world building you can do with some of these systems.

settings definitely the biggest thing that could change this redundant feelings with FC5. he can go to many kind of offworld shenanigans like Blood Dragon, but instead pick another regime, another backwater country/places, etc, etc. Here some examples for an unique settings:
    + Steampunk Fantasy
    + Arabian Desertpunk
    + Waterworld Type Places
+ Mix Medieval with Weird Techs
    + Hollow Earth Type Places
    + Grimdark Dieselpunk
+ Alien world with alien characters
    + Abandoned titanic mothership
+ Alternate timeline of IRL history
    + "Turok-like" Fantasy
    + Sci-fi Biopunk world
+ Post apocalyptic Medieval sci-fi (western & eastern)
    + Western Weirdworld Fantasy
+ Magicpunk world with aliens & fantasy races
Hell, they can go "Cyberpunk with high fantasy" like Shadowrun & I would pick that over this typical backwater regime setting like FC6.

I vehemently disagree. These different settings are essentially reskins or mods as ACG put it. Ubisoft gives us new settings all the time but, in the end, it's still just a cycle of clearing a map/checklist while collecting junk, and being inundated with HUD information.

@@BlueisNotaWarmColour My arguments for this would be:
+ different settings would definitely provides new looks & feels, both visually & story-wise.
+ Unique different settings can provide unique features & gameplay elements that not yet exist in the franchises. Hell, maybe something similar but with new twists like ACG suggested.
+ Unique settings provides a lot more potentials in the storytelling & themes.
Many FC fand love Blood Dragon because how different it was with other FC games. It has its own unique styles & some elements that unique to Blood Dragon only. Far Cry game franchise is essentially an open world action shooter in isolated setting. It's such broad descriptions but somehow Ubisoft still unable to make the franchise feel fresh with each titles, ever since FC3.
Is a more grounded & hardcore tactical shooter system gonna help the franchise fresh again?? Idk... Maybe... But then again, it's a different market/audiences & likely will compete with other hardcore FPS games.

I want the game to be harder in some areas like ammo ecenomy but not so much in fighting the actual enemy or the ability of having the choice to make the enemy smarter or not which is hard to do in a open world game but that's a dev problem not a me problem. all I can do is wish for things.

Break up the rhythm of your commentary a bit. Add some pauses. Take a breath and let your points breathe a bit. You have this relentless, steady, staccato like pacing with your commentary and editing that it can almost feel exhausting and overwhelming. It's as if your script has virtually no commas, periods, or paragraphs. It can at times sound like you're just speaking in one immensely long run on sentence.
It's like the audio version of watching a Michael Bay film that's just an endless string of jump cuts that never allow your brain to process what it just saw or in this case heard.

Ubisoft has a serious problem with how they seem to be designing their games. They are chasing the trend of Battle Royals with both The Division and Ghost Recon franchises and while I know they will end up releasing Frontline and Heartland I think they are going to find that the people who played Division(1&2) and the recent Ghost Recon games are not the people that will be playing these two BR titles. Sure they may win over some converts from Warzone, PubG or Fortnite but the experience that long time GR and Division players want is to keep playing those games, not to play a game with the same name in a Battle Royal scenario. Back to Far Cry, I think Ubisoft is chasing their own trend Far Cry 1&2 were new and different 3 had an amazing villain. And they think the same formula will work forever when what made Far Cry 2, in particular, great was the engine's fire mechanics and different perspectives on the same story for each of the playable characters. Rant over.

I whole heartedly agree with this assessment, and I hope Ubisoft makes a pivot for Far Cry 7.
Far Cry 3 refined a lot of systems and was really fun. Far Cry 4 was more of the same, bit more polished. Far Cry 5 was exciting because it was in America and dealt with a cult. I'm one of the minority that actually loves Far Cry 5 and I regularly go back to it. I liked some of the things done in New Dawn. This is the first Far Cry that I'll wait for a sale for. Aside from the excellent villain and liberation story line, nothing about the gameplay systems is making me want to pick this up. The gameplay systems doesn't make this feel like a full-blown sequel. I'm not trying to disparage the hard work the devs put into this, but Far Cry needed a shakeup after 5, and this wasn't it.

    • @baukepoelsma

But now looking at FC6 which is more of FC5 which is more of FC4 and 3.... common man, listen to ACG Ubisoft! This was the first far cry that I didn’t even consider getting. Didn’t care. Ubisoft is truly developing by the numbers, like Disney remasters, I think you can only sell the same games so many times till people catch on. My biggest gripes
    - story sucks. I feel nothing for protagonist or characters (explains faceless/genderless insert)
    - villain is clearly the tent post, villains are villainous, big surprise.
    - map has zero character, interspersed with cut out mission areas. Everything else is the same.
    - Core gunplay is repetitive, weapons don’t feel unique just a different frequency bullet hose.
    - collectibles are the laziest, most phone it in mechanic. I got a page, WHO CARES!?
    - graphics have managed to look the same for over a decade. How did they even do that? 🤔

    • @Dellerss

The graphics are nowhere near the same. The last Far Cry game that existed at that time was Far Cry 2. If you think that or even 3 looked even remotely close to FC6 you probably need glasses or have terrible memory. Or course it's available on PS4 and X1, which have hardware comparable to fairly good (not high end) computers from 2010.

Don't really agree with that at all, but they've also pretty much been on the 8G consoles for almost a decade. Certainly the visuals have been refined from FC4 to Primal to FC5 to New Dawn to FC6 in that time, but you can't expect complete overhauls when you're still stuck with an Xbox One and base PS4 as the entry points.

As the story unfolds, the world ages. Suddenly, midway through the plot, it's 1968 and a lot changes, including your character, and what hardware they have access to. It sounds silly on paper but this is something I would like to see in modern RPGs. Dynamic timelines and player character aging.

Something I really want to see now that the hardware allows for it is a game with a teleporter for a protagonist. Literally look at a plain / cliff / rooftop, press a button, and BAM, you're right there, even if it's dozens of kilometers away. However, no UI map, no objective markers, and no fast travel points. Only maps would be found in the world as "You are here" signposts. That way you really need to learn the world, but since you can travel so fast getting lost doesn't really lose you time. The idea occurred to me when playing AC Odyssey, using the eagle and a cheat tool to hop around the world in a similar way, it was a very cool experience I would love to see fleshed out properly.

Far Cry could start by being more serious and story driven. Remove the wacky childish attributes. Gta for example went from gta4 one of the best dark stories I've ever experienced and amazing realistic driving physics to the most childish arcadey easy game in Gta5.
Ghost Recon became a boring generic open world with lackluster story. Open world does not need to be implemented for every game

    • @lhays117
      @lhays117 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

GTA4 is good, but overrated. Saints Row 2, which came out at the same year, was a better game in every regard except for realistic physics and graphics. I played GTA4 again recently and ever though its a well made game with very well written characters and voice actors, the story is a depressing slog that majorly overstays its welcome. It's just Niko apathetically working for one douchebag after another for hours and hours until he finally reaches his character climax when he confronts Darko. I just felt like so much of the game was filler and the open world itself was incredibly mediocre and felt totally unnecessary. Saints Row 2 on the other hand had a lot of very dark moments in its narrative while also balancing them out with some zany wacky moments as well, plus the open world was WAAAAAAAY better than GTA4's was. I think Far Cry should go down the SR2 route and make more grounded serious moments properly woven into its wackiness without it being jarring.

My suggested change for 6 specifically which I’m hoping and praying they actually provide in an update is fixing the lack of challenge and immersion you have regarding loadouts. Being able to switch your weapons by just going into the menu at any point, EVEN IN COMBAT, is nothing short of ludicrous. Choosing what weapons you take out with you in previous entries was really well done because you actually have to think about how to approach different scenarios, it’s such a basic feature that games have been doing since forever it astounds me it’s even an issue with a modern title from a huge studio. Got to be fixed!

I honestly want to see more of a return to form for far cry. Something more akin to far cry 2. I think why that game is so fondly remembered is because it almost tried to take a more realistic approach, and everything seemed fairly grounded within a world that had set rules and boundaries that made sense. In far cry 6 you've got from the beginning, avery evil antagonist and the tone is set almost immediately. Civilians getting murdered hell, he essentially has a grandmother shot in the face. But then the next couple of missions have you using a neon chicken to Peck people to death. Not to mention the gun customization and some of the weapons you get later on feel so ridiculously cartoony, and honestly that's been a slow descent for the series. it never originally was so over the top, at least in its stylistic presentation of weapons and characters.
Some might consider that good thing, but personally I'd like to see a far cry game that has realistic recoil, where the devs did their research on how guns are supposed to handle, and the player has to maintain their weapons or they become useless. Granted how quickly weapons deteriorated in far cry 2 was a bit laughable. Additionally half of the battle shouldn't be fighting the enemy but fighting the environment to get to the enemy. Again I think far cry 2 is so beloved because it in a lot of ways stuck to this idea of brutalist difficulty (it's not overly difficult or like a mil sim) in a grounded world. To me it feels more believable to be shot and have to pull the bullet out of your arm and bandage yourself while fighting malaria, in a world that feels real. There weren't even civilians in far cry 2, and yet the feeling of oppression and sadness throughout the landscape was tangible. It's better then smoking a cigar and putting it out on yourself and then getting a crocodile to eat someone.

I think people were excited for Far Cry 5 when they announced it was taking place in the USA. It was a fresh breath being somewhere we were all familiar with. I think we were all slightly disappointed when it turned to a religious cult that seems to have been overplayed in multiple TVs movies and games as well. It felt like “too easy” of a villain and theme to go with.
What if the games were brought back into the USA, but maybe during revolutionary or civil wars? If every war game can have the nazi German army as the bad guys, why not the British or Confederates?
Or if instead of religious cults, there were cannibals who kidnapped people from small towns. Or a terrorist/activist group set to destroy a port at the gulf of Mississippi (some kind of fake New Orleans) where the camps are set in swamp lands.
There’s a real connection to a plot when the setting takes place in our own backyard. If we’re trying to bring players excitement back, why not start there with history revisioned or a threat in areas we’re familiar with again. The series doesn’t need to stay in the US, but I think the familiarity will help.

And boy do I have more ideas that could serve Far Cry 5 and 6 better. Spoilers though.
As for Far Cry 6, there could be multiple endings based on each central character of the game since it is all about taking control of Yara and steering its future towards something. Each character gets a "good", "neutral" and a "bad" ending.
These characters are the Monteros, Legends of 67, La Moral, Maximas Mantanzas, Clara Garcia, Juan Cortez and of course, Diego Castillo, Anton Castillo and Dani Rojas.
Each of their 3 endings concern them getting the opportunity to rule Yara their way and it all boils down to a plot twist that should have been in the game: Dani is the bastard child of Anton Castillo, but since her mother didn't sire a son, she was either killed or left for dead which explains WHY DANI WAS AN ORPHAN IN THE FIRST PLACE.
When Dani discovers the truth, it's the players choice then to whether she will tell this to anyone of her allies. And obviously, they won't react as kindly which can lead to the neutral and bad endings.
How can this be measured as a progression? Well, again the player's choice comes into play on what faction does she come help more: Libertad (if this the player will choose either Clara, Juan or Dani in the end to rule/come out on top), the Montero family, Maxima Mantanzas or the Legend of 67 and La Moral. Different progression bars for each factions that continue constantly with no end decide that factor and although all factions untied will go on to Esperanza to take out Castillo or you know, the player could just join him for sick reasons hehe I'll get back to that or you could just have nothing to do with the factions who are likely to take things far with their campaigns and just take care of Diego in either ruling together or escaping to Miami together. Anyways, those separate progression bars made to whether a player's choice helps a faction a bit more and that faction will rule at the end.
I have so many more ideas for Far Cry 5 AND 6 it's unreal.

Far Cry 2 is great. FC Primal is great too. Now I wonder, what those two games have in common? First of all, both are serious games (Primal looks a little goofy if played in normal difficulty, but for sure becomes a very serious experience if played on survivor mode without wallhack). Second, I think both stands out for being their own thing. Primal not relying on big villains, not being about power fantasy, throwing out all the overpowering weapons and putting the player in a real sense of danger (the game even has second chance and permadeath for true immersion); all of that shows that exists another lineage within the series. If Ubisoft wants to make Far Cry exciting again, they should stop looking to Jason Brody and Vaas and start looking to what made FC2 and Primal both great games.
Far Cry 3 (in my opinion the worst of the series) have merit in being his own thing too, but his commercial success started an obsession, and every game since (except for Primal) tried to be the new FC3.

As someone who absolutely loves the Far Cry formula and who bought FC6 almost immediately, I get a lot of these points. I do think the world traversal is a non-issue though, quite the opposite, its something that Ubi handles better than most developers. The player can easily get around most AC/FC games, without pain or without worrying about save spam or reloading. As such, the player feels no restrictions about exploring or going to the most far flung corners in the way you felt in something like RDR2, a game that actively sought to punish even thinking about exploration.
There's definitely something to the forgettable player characters, and I think its been trending more forgettable. At least, from Jason Brody to Ajay Ghale to 'nameless Deputy', Jason and Ajay were both at least voiced and had motivation to do what they did. Deputy wasn't voiced, had no real attachments to ingame characters, nor any real backstory. Might as well have been a floating gun arm and backpack. I'm not sure about Rojas yet, since I haven't really delved into FC6 yet, but I like the change to 3rd person cutscenes and return to a properly voiced character.
On the setting, Karak has a point, you can copy the Far Cry formula into any number of settings, from alien world to post apocalyptic to post-post apocalyptic to scifi dystopia and more. FC5's Lost on Mars took us to Mars, and while I thought the interplay between Hurk/Brobot and Nick Rye was fun, the planet was mostly just empty.

Basically a lot of the stuff you are mentioning was already present in Far Cry 2.
    - Competent AI. They flanked you, had a whole weapon kit available to them instead of a designated role (which let's be honest makes half of the enemies in the later games a non threat), no colour coding to them. In fact there is almost no colour coding in that game (the colour of the trucks from the 2 factions is the exception).
    - Something like the drones in Breakpoint? The patroles in FC2 of jeeps and trucks were a lot more present than in later titles. Furthermore (this goes back to the AI) they drove right over you whenever they got the chance instead of stopping their vehicle and trying to get out of it to shoot you like they did in 3 and onwards. That revving engine noise is something many Far Cry 2 players still have memories from.
    - HUD. Well it's the prime example of one of the best HUDs ever made imo. No clutter on the screen. Ammo counter and life bar even fade out of view when you are not in combat or pressing a button that's related to its information (like reload, heal, or something like that). The map you hold that in your actual hands.
    - The overabundance of fast travel points which leads to players not actually traversing the world wasn't present either. Hence why some like to call it Far Drive. But at least I felt like I was playing a game and not a menu simulator.
On top of that narrative and gameplay were actually connected and felt cohesive. Only Blood Dragon gets away with the ridiculous over the top gameplay they went for since 3.

Idea for the prologue and the characters motivation if it goes another way. You are an ex military man who joined a humanitarian/relief group with a woman you meet and marry. She makes you a better man and you put it all behind you. Now you're in some country where the people are being neglected and abused in every way by the president/dictator or whoever. Now that you're helping some of these people they're realizing how bad they've had it and are wanting to rise up against the dictator but you are telling them not to because it would end in war and death. It's too late though because he's already heard rumblings about unrest amongst the people and how it's all about your group being there. You're out one day for supplies and calming down various protest groups etc when you get back and find your group's center of operation in smoke and flames. Theres soldiers strewn about whats left of the building and you take each down quickly but non-lethally as you work your way through. Each time it's just a simple chokehold or wack to the back of the head and when you get close a cutscene plays. You're at the back of what was the building but its blown out and theres a heavy armored vehicle parked at the gap of the wall with headlights blasting in. The President/Dictator is there with a handful of men and what's left of your group is there with your wife kneeling on the ground watching and listening intently. He tells them that the building is gone, their supporters are being dealt with, and that this is there OPPORTUNITY to appreciate his mercy and leave the country. He turns to leave and your wife says something to him about how it's only a matter of time before they or someone else takes over and he gets what's coming to him for what he's done to his people. You think he's going to leave still but instead he turns with hate in his eyes which he quickly hides behind a sneering grin before saying something about how he will do the same thing he has always done then.... What he has to. Then before you have a chance to react he grabs a gun from one of his men and shoots your wife. You can hardly believe it and are frozen blank faced. He gets in his transport after throwing the gun back and telling his men he's changed his mind and to kill the rest and dispose of the "garbage". As soon as he drives away the camera focuses back on the wife and your character snaps. All his training and unfocused rage from his time in the service comes back to him and he rushes in to save the rest of his group and friends. He grabs the nearest soldier and their gun before killing the first man he has in years in a gruesome takedown telling his friends to take cover and taking out the last few soldiers. Those of your group who stay help you establish new connections and a new base of operation. Its the emotional impact we need after 3 hit so hard and the rest frankly faltered a bit. UBISOFT READ THIS LOL. I even added it to multiple videos as i really like its premise.

So many true things are said here and I wish we'd get to see those changes in the future. However as popular as Ubisoft are, not many people realize that they're not that big/successful of a company. They are even smaller/less successful than CDPR and can't even be compared to EA or Activision. Now when we look at the work Ubisoft does (all the games they maintain and develop), teams that they employ and compare those to the company's metrics, it seems to me like they might've fallen behind and started becoming a AA game company with the image of AAA one, because they're hanging on their IP's popularity.

    • @jesperburns

_"They are even smaller/less successful than CDPR"_
      Revenue as of 2020:
      CDPR 500 million
      Ubisoft 1.5 billion
      Epic Games 4 billion
      EA 5.5 billion
      Activision 8 billion
CDPR and Ubisoft are *FAR* from small fry. All those I listed are huge, fantastically successful companies.
Ubi shits out what, 3 AAA games per year?

      @cylentstorm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

There are several separate studios under the Ubi mantle, and many Ubisoft-branded games are at least a partial collaboration between them. It's a fairly common setup, but the design-by-committee method seems to stifle any creativity that we may have otherwise seen had the guidelines not been so obviously narrow. Situations vary, but don't get too caught up in Corp-speak like "AA/AAA" or other nonsense. It's a distortion of reality.

The solution to traversal you describe is essentially what Breath of the Wild did only with a grappling hook instead of Link's body, and I am actually surprised that Far Cry has not taken any cues from that game. I think its an almost perfect analog, just in first person.

  • @terrythegnome2408
    @terrythegnome2408 3 ปีที่แล้ว

As an artist in AAA we are in a constant fight with designers to try to decrease the amount of color coding or obvious traversal decal stuff. We always want it to look and feel more natural but design would be happiest if the whole world was gray block with nothing else in the level but decals! It takes really good designers to know when those decals are necessary and when they are not. Overall there needs to be more creativity within game design in general. Most designers just do what they were taught and don't think too far out of the box. Also play testers often find the most simple interactions hard without sign posts so...kinda screws the rest of us over.

I wish all the video game developers would get together and try to standardize the buttons. I realize different games have different functions so they can't always be the same but I wish simple commands like jump, shoot, open, etc would be the same buttons on different games.

Maps are obviously getting players familiar with content, I like them to be given in-story by easy access. The time spent on resources is important for both developers and players.
Some story-driven games give maps asap, while others have the need of exploration to unlock the knowledge of symbolic areas. Even racing games have exploration to reward the players. To me, allowing players to explore the environment with a simple explanation of a symbolic system, even colors (lol).
Strategy is important, indeed. And as development teams grow, so does content. I guess upgrades go here too, the longer you play the tougher your avatar gets. Progression is what keeps a player coming back...

  • @daystranger
    @daystranger 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I'm baffled that you included Zero Dawn's Striders as a good "dynamic mechanic". Those are just Ubisoft Towers(tm) that move around AND you can usually only climb them when they are in a couple of conveniently placed spots where environments just so happens to fit together so you can start climbing one. You could have the same effect if you add two doors to a tower and randomly lock\unlock them as time passes.
Though I would like a new "spot the area" mechanic instead of the usual "stand in spot to have map area unlocked" thing. Phoenix Rising did a better job with its Zelda-like binocular system where you could mark stuff yourself, it was just TOO powerful(Working through walls). Just take that system and build on top of it.

I really think they should make the next Far Cry a proper RPG where you have extensive narrative choice throughout the game and can complete missions in multiple different manners, some of which might not even involve violently gunning everyone down or sneakily machete slicing their throats and rather could be resolved totally nonviolently. I also think it should allow players to align themselves with or against different factions and in turn allow them to play as more of a good guy or bad guy depending on their preference. Lastly, I would like it to be set in a fictional version of Thailand since I think the quirkiness of that part of the world would lend itself quite well to the tone of Far Cry.

For the reasons you explained is why I don't really play Ubisoft games. My first game from them is Far Cry 2 (or 3?) and loved it a lot at the start. Overtime it was way too repetitive it got frustrating causing me to drop the game. Years later played Primal, and again loved it, but the same thing happened down the line. It seems Ubisoft doesn't care enough to work in the nuances of a game enough to make it new or different

Ubisoft seem to be focused on streamline the game loop to such an extent at this rate the next Far Cry game will consist of a few button prompts while the games plays itself. Following an activity, tbd player will then scour the area for materials to build an upgrade at a camp that never feels meaningful.

    Far cry 1 tropical island
    Far cry 2 afruca
    Far cry 3 tropical island

    Far cry 4 tibet

Far cry 6 basically cuba, also tropical
Far cry primal tibet with cavemen
I feel like they can keep trying to mix up the areas and the formula little by little. Every new game should have its own theme and new enemies. I wouldn't mind more time hopping or more syfy shenanigans. If done right of course.

Having fun with 6 so far, mostly due to the setting I think. They did a lot right with the world, and the music is freaking great like really really great. But I will say about 6 hours in I can see it starting to slow down a bit... we'll see maybe it's just a speed bump. If I get 20 hours of legit fun out of this I'll be happy. 5 reeeeeeeeally slowed down for me after a about 12 hours.

@@Aussie_Tom yeah it's been fun so far but I will say the map is huge like I've only been to like 10% of it so far so we may be looking at a Valhalla situation here idk. BTW what I did was sign up for ubis subscription service. It's like 16 bucks to play the ultimate edition and seeing as it's a far cry game I'm sure I'll be done with it inside of a month and just cancel my sub. Just an idea if you're not sure about buying but semi interested.

  • @mikeva3975
    @mikeva3975 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Honestly, one of the things I really want in Farcry is for the player to feel like he/she has a meaningful impact on the game world. I can take over an enemy fuel depot and be told it's good for the resistance, but who cares? Telling me has no impact and I don't care. If I take over a base for my faction I want tangible changes to not only affect the game world but also my overall playing experience. Give weight to clearing out bases and checkpoints. Also, make it much harder to do so. Then, it feels like I'm accomplishing something and building something.

    • @mikeva3975
      @mikeva3975 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Another idea, make the actual military a character in the game. Military forces can constantly be upgrading their gear, abilities, etc. However, if I destroy a training camp maybe a lot of soldiers are now green and less effective. If I destroy an ammo dump maybe they don't have specialty rounds for a while. If I destroy a general supply dump maybe they don't get as good body armor. If I destroy or capture a fuel dump maybe they have less vehicles and tanks to respond with (now they use horses more). Maybe there's a choice between capturing a location or completely destroying it. If captured, maybe the particular faction in the area gets it and is better loaded out. Stuff like that gives weight to the map and gameplay for me.

I like the Far Cry formula, the big sandbox but I wish Ubisoft would stop trying to redo Far Cry 3. Vaas was a great villain but not every Far Cry game needs its Vaas.

My favourite far cry games have been the spin offs, blood dragon & primal.
Even if they never going to do any big changes to the gameplay, they should at least be unique with their settings/ characters and such.
I always remember the some of the surveys they sent out concerning what settings players want to see, and it’s a shame they never did the cool ones from a book dragon sequel, to a Jurassic part dinosaur island & Victorian era like setting with vampires.
Come on ubi, just jump the shark already…

They need to get rid of their whole progression system. Its boring, lazy and overdone. Game needs an engine and graphical overhaul, DLSS, revamped and improved shooting mechanics. An entirely new progression system UNIQUE TO FAR CRY, better writing, a more serious narrative, a more realistic aesthetic and no more stupid single player microtransactions or monetization beyond story DLC.

I was thinking they can go two directions, either bring back Carter as a 007 type character, or expand on FC5 and go full post-apocalyptic. Either way though, I would tone down the wacky. Look at Uncharted or Tomb Raider for a Bond type game, or Metro and Fallout for a PA type game. A game can still be seriously fun even if it is more serious.

Was hoping for a sequel eventually but so far nothing.
