    • @masteroflag
      @masteroflag 6 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      IcyBlaze true. But let’s be honest, that’s actually how the Japanese have their anime all the time. They only fix really bad lip synch in Home releases, most of the time it’s just empty flaps and since the audience in America mostly can’t watch the shows Raw, you can’t tell since you have to read the subtitles or something else visually interesting.
      It’s apparently one of the chief complaints of a dub company since they have to match flaps or be called a poor production.
      So to me it’s nice to see them just use the same script and not have to pay as much attention causing even more odd acting just to match up

    • @Mellow_Yellow13
      @Mellow_Yellow13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agreed, I think both are solid. The only strong preferences I have are Rex, Dromarch (Nia’s Cat) and Tora in the dub and Nia for the sub.

    • @MaNameizJeff
      @MaNameizJeff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Monolith is actually known for accurate translation rather than lip syncing a bad dub because they have to create sentences to match it. It wasn't so bad in the xenosaga series because the lips wern't so well structured. Amazingly though xenosaga 3 resynched the dub.

    • @thewizardninja
      @thewizardninja 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +masteroflag Anime isn't 3DCG though, mouth flap matching is considerably more important for that thanks to the uncanny valley, and often what happens is that companies will re-program the flaps to fit the translated dialogue rather than the other way around. Doesn't look like they did that here though.

      Maybe it’s the same problem that I have with Japanese voice acting: I was born and raised around the English language, I have the ability to appreciate the subtle emotion and the emphasis on specific words and in certain sentences. For example just the opening scene there I’m able to discern the depth of Rex’s English voice acting but I can’t for the life of me tell listen to the Japanese actor and hear anything but mindless ramble. Are you by chance a native English speaker or did you grow up around a different language? I feel like with languages there very much is something to the likes of “cross-racial identification” that can occur with language as well.

    I'm glad they used British/Irish voice actors but the Japanese version's voice actors are fairly famous and experienced and the end result is much much better than the English. There are no real cringy voices in JP except for some of the common blades. Zeke uses Kansai-ben and Byakko ("Dromarch"?) uses a lot of keigo which is more natural in JP than the way he speaks in the English version. A lot of the English version's translation seems pretty unnatural to me, although I understand that translation is a super difficult job!

      I unfortunately learned from experience from interacting with these people of why Japanese Dub haters hate Japanese:
      1. They're too lazy to read subtitles
      2. They hate Japanese by default because it's not in a language they understand
      3. They have a bias towards English because it's the language they're used to

      The reason for such a contrast between the two is actually because (1.) to do VA jobs in Japan, one must go through special voice acting schools (with exceptions to young children voicing child roles) and (2.) seiyuu take their voice roles much more seriously than others to the point that in essence they become the character while in the recording booth (since the staff even gives them such mundane details about the characters that most would never actually see such as ex. Love Live’s seiyuu for Eli and Nozomi both were even told what those characters’ ideal boyfriends would be like, favorite foods, etc.)

    • @kamenriderantinomy
      @kamenriderantinomy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Let's use the term "Seiyuu" to differentiate Japanese voice actors from other voice actors just like the term "Anime" is used to differentiate Japanese animated works from other forms of animated media.
      I already knew that Seiyuus put their heart and soul into the roles they portray which is why I have an appreciation for the craft. Seiyuus going the extra mile as far as method acting either on their own or with the guidance of the voice director shows in their work which is the reason why Japanese voice acting resonates with so many people including myself.

For example, the names of nearly everything is different in Japanese and yet the English subtitles still say Pyra/Genbu/Turturs/Pandoria/etc.

      It just makes me feel like even the development team just didn't have any faith in the English dub, and that makes me sad, because I think - GENERALLY SPEAKING - that the English performances here are rather decent. Just because there's a Japanese voice option doesn't mean it's OK for the English voice work to just get ignored when it comes to lip-syncing.

    • @trevoydamon6617
      @trevoydamon6617 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Laggalot101 Uh, I don't think it was lack of effort and more time constraints. I mean seriously.
      You do know how long lip syncing in gaming takes right? Especially in games with this cartoony feel. Consider the fact that when they revealed this game for the first time and already gave it a release year that (at that moment), you could surmise that at that rate there was no way in hell the game would have had accurate lip syncing.
      Look at the Kingdom Hearts series. Games with arguably some of the best lip syncing in an action JRPG. Why do you think most Japanese games in general with VA come out later outside of Japan in about a 5-7 months or so especially, in an RPG. It takes time and money to do so. Unless they delayed the game (them being Nintendo, which is what I thought they were going to do) there was no question, that there wasn't gonna be accurate lip syncing. But yeah, no amount of syncing does leave a lot of dead air and honestly they should've delayed it slightly.
      Though to be fair, I don't think it'll ruin the game for anyone nor should it you.
      Still like some of the Eng dub and some of the Jap dub, though.

    • @ShadowNerd92
      @ShadowNerd92 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But then it doesn't lie on the actual voice syncing. Nothing says they couldn't pop the man back in the booth and give a more paced, not slower, script to fill in that silence, I think the lip syncing is an unfortunate product of trying to match the captions. And if they were trying to match the lips, they should've just gone old Chinese movie lip syncing and let it lie, but they tried to do...something, and most of us can't really nail it down.

    • @laggalot1012
      @laggalot1012 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Oh, don't worry, I'm very willing to believe that lip-syncing takes a while to get right. But then, I'm also definitely not expecting perfect lip-syncing, I'm not that demanding. However, in these comparisons alone, there's whole seconds of silence with mouths moving, or the other way around. I feel like even just a bit of effort could've gone a long way here. It doesn't need to be Kingdom Hearts levels of quality lip-syncing, it really doesn't need to be perfect (it definitely wasn't in the previous two games), but I really feel like there's a few extreme instances of desync here that just should not have been allowed to fly.

    Am I crazy? Am I the only one who hates this shit voice direction in the dub?
    Pyra and Mythra are terrible, plain and simple. And Rex is also extremely bad. They don’t emote at the right times, and their calm demeanor makes the translation issues very noticeable. Especially when the dub is trying to match the lip flaps of the talking characters. I get you can’t get it 100% right, but at least try to not make the voice acting so distracting? That just makes the bad voice acting queues all the more noticeable.
    Also, I don’t mind accents, but the hard British accents feel way too out of place. Are we in Great Britain? Does this take place in Europe? I thought this was a fantasy world setting, so why do some characters have these thick British accents and others do not? Do they come from a country with those accents?

    A lot of complaning comes from “i heart all that voices in anime, too generic” sooo, now thats a bad thing? “Messi is bad bc i see him all time in football awards” You can prefer the english dub of couse (i prefer the english dub some times in this game) but saying that is just stupid.

  • @jordick8427
    @jordick8427 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Oh god...I almost forgot how bad the English voice pack was.
    Take Rex for example. In the game he's 15 year old teen, but his English voice makes him sound like he's a man in his 30s. Most of the voices just don't match their characters at all, Rex's and Nia's Ensligh voices being the most out of place.
    Not only that but most of the English voice acting is somewhat emotionless. Here's an comparison what I mean by that: English voice 1:52 vs Japanese voice 2:39

    I spent more than 100 hours on the game and trust me, the Japanese audio is the way to go. It's so much better than this poor English dub. You're missing a part of the characters emotions by playing the game in English. A truly great English dub for a J-RPG game is the one in FFXII for example. I'm a non-native English speaker so I can really judge. Also, the game must be played in dock mode, on TV it looks absolutely fine, even gorgeous at times. It's one of the very few Switch games that weren't made to be played in handheld mode. It's also one of the best J-RPG games of the last decade, it's a "must play" if you like the genre.

    Tora-Japanese is much less annoying

    I'm not a fan of Rex's voice acting. From the 1 hour livestream Derrick did, his screaming doesn't have nearly enough emotion in it.
    On the other hand, I like Pyra's English voice acting MUCH more than her generic high-pitched Japanese voice.

      Your Boy Guzma that seems to be one thing that Rex's VA fails at, the yelling. The Japanese VA is just generic, watch a bunch of anime and you will pick up on those voices immediately.

    • @andresmarrero8666
      @andresmarrero8666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      DarkSonic180 in this case yes. I can pin these voices as the character's voices, unlike with the Japanese VA which is shared a muddles with a thousand other characters.

      I do agree Rex could use some work, but I do like a lot of the rest of the cast. Zeke's cutscene may be badly synched, but his voice actor is REALLY funny. I loved his delivery of "The ZEKENATOR!" That had me hysterical. I think he stole the show.

    • @andresmarrero8666
      @andresmarrero8666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      DarkSonic180 what's the point of good voice acting in which the characters have no voice that is their own? It all get's lost in the generic sea. Besides the dub did have good voice acting, just that it was out of synch and Rex's yells could use some work.

      Lots of people sound the same, regardless of race. There are several actors that I think sound like over actors. If they can perform then their vocal similarity is a non-issue but you can keep pretending that it's a Japanese dub problem.
