    • @kristianspitfire
      @kristianspitfire 5 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      You don't need to use a clutch downshifting either, most drivers right foot brake but some left foot brake and use no clutch in V8 supercars ,there is no auto blip so you have to blip at the right moment if your not using the clutch, not using the clutch going down the gears in a dog box is a skill in itself. Shift time doesn't mean anything going down the gears anyway, it's usually smoother using the clutch as your more patient so you have a low chance of locking the rear wheels.
      The gearbox in a V8 Supercar is the same type as a GT3 car, GT3 cars have a clutch pedal but they never use it for downshifting as they are allowed auto-blip and that means miss shifting is impossible

    • @kristianspitfire
      @kristianspitfire 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      th-cam.com/video/qOjQkAj6r04/w-d-xo.html
      Here is Greg murphy left foot braking and downshifting with no clutch whatsoever.
      You take more risk locking the rear making a mistake but if you can do it it's great, most drivers in this series say though it's not a advantage for these cars as the roll on to the throttle off the brake is quite slow anyway as the big heavy chassis's are pitch sensetive

    • @DustinTV8

    • @lomeunier
      @lomeunier 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If I remember well, it's to replace the brake pads; because of the vibrations it gets when going over a kerb or road imperfections at high speeds, the pads may be displaced (just a little bit). If I remember well this is the real explanation.

    • @constantinosmallios

  • @mrmidnight32
    @mrmidnight32 5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    For people asking why he taps the brake on the straight it’s to warm the brakes and build fluid pressure to make sure it’s not soft going into the corner. More consistent pedal feedback that way.

    • @mrmidnight32
      @mrmidnight32 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Jake Heke no he’s not, how often do you race and for what series?
      Ive been racing for the last 6 years in both time attack and local challenge series. Do you even know what set back is or are you just reading the comments from other people then repeating what other people are to sound smart?
      They teach this in racing school, which I’ve taken a few. It keeps brake pressure up and in some cases keeps the pads in operating temp for maximum performance. When you run race pads too cold or too hot do not stop the car. They have to be with in a specific thermal range for maximum braking efficiency.
      Set back is in rare cases and isn’t needed for every turn, consistent brake pressure and temperature is.
      So please, don’t speak unless you actually know wtf you’re talking about. We have enough of that bs being spread around these comments already.

      No he is correcting pad knock back. The pads move slightly out of place when cornering under heavy G forces. Pad knock back is a common thing, even happens in motorcycle racing. Danilo Petrucci for example, his front end started to wobble, knocking the brake pads out of place. Went to brake and felt nothing. Grabbed it even harder and crashed.

    Quick question these cars don't engine brake that well do they? Even with reduced revs the lightened internals and better machined parts means the reduced friction and lower weight has less of an effect, right?

      Car does not shift for him, he shifts every time. However, with that gearbox he doesn’t need to use the clutch at all for the gearboxes sake, however he needs it to maintain stability under braking. If he didn’t use the clutch and rev match, there would be a huge risk for a lock up in the rear and spinning out.

    • @ukracer7593

      It's to make sure the pads are close to the discs before needing to brake properly. When you ride the kerbs you get what is called pad knock off where the pads move away from the disc so when you come to brake the pedal travels far further than normal which is not good at all. I have it had happen to me twice and it wasn't until the second time I actually realised what was going on.

    I'd have thought racers would have stronger, more protective boots...never really being aware how much subtlety is used by all the surfaces of the feet. Makes sense they would be like gloves on the foot.

    • @Ofitus21

      corrathexplora in a V8 supercar when you tap the brake pedal before the braking zone it pushes the brake pads up to the disc face and it gives you better pedal pressure because the one thing you never want to have in a V8 supercar is a long pedal a long pedal is when the pedal goes all the way to the floor and the drivers absolutely hate long pedals

      Pad knockoff, so everytime he hits a corner and/or kerbs, specially sausage kerbs, the pads are going to be fired away from the disc because the pads will hit the disc and get jostled out of place, so the tapping of the brake is to bring the pads back into position, otherwise the braking will be delayed and by the time you get to the corner, you're still going 170km/h
