Beth is one of those Uber gifted singers...GIFT... great cover of this song..and i love Beth Hart!!!!! you can tell when people feel the songs they sing...Stevie Wonder is like that too.
She started using drugs to self-medicate at 11 years old. She LATER found out she was Bi Polar and self -medicated and partied more. She got that under control now. She has been clean a long time now though. Two schools of thought: Once an addict always an addict, and: God delivered me. She knows she will always be an addict, but one in recovery. She is the spokeswoman for all of us, PEOPLE!
Then I admire Beth even more for not trying to pretend all is good and heaven now but at the same time fighting hard to improve her life. It takes guts to accept the darkness in yourself and cope with it, and she's been able to accomplish that.
There is another school of thought: that hanging on to past problems is the best way NOT to get past the problems - knowing you will always be an addict is a really negative reinforcement that actually leads to many cases of relapse - I would say the majority of relapses. There is some talk that newer, positive habits can overwrite the old habits, or if not remove them, remove the affect of the old habits. And if there is no affect, then isn't that the aim? Because triggers to relapse are triggers BECAUSE they awake feelings, if the feeling tone to a trigger is non-existent, then it is not a trigger. Which is a huge step forwards, restoring respect in oneself, a real positive enforcement to continue using and strengthening the newer, positive habits. So now I would like to ask something: She's clean, right? Has been for several years. My question is this: Do you you mean that she's clean, or do you mean that she is a recovering addict and always will be? The reason is if you say she is clean, then every time you think of her in connection with the word clean, do you feel happy about that, or does thinking of her as clean remind you that she is an addict in recovery for ever. I don't think of my acquaintances and friends who have had similar situations, as being addicts in recovery for ever. I would never want to limit them in thinking that way, even - and get this -even if they believe themselves to be addicts in recovery forever. Now I would like to add another point of view. Beth's healing, or has already healed. And she has done so to a great extant because she has been gifted with something very precious and rare. She can sing. And her voice has a quality, as well, which is also rare. In the years since she became clean, she's been moving slowly up onto the world stage and is gaining recognition. When you do something like that, you put a lot of time and energy into doing it. You must be focused. And your voice is THE single most valuable asset you have. Because it's unique, as well as all the rest. And it is valuable in the rarest way possible. Through singing, she has been healing herself. First she would have noticed that without drink and drugs, her voice was clearer , that she had more range, that she didn't get hoarse every day after she's sung too hard, too long, drunk too much, and with drink that IS what happens and can ruin your voice ( listen to Joe Cocker at the beginning of his career and listen to him now. How much clearer could it be?) And, even more importantly and totally wonderful, every time she played a gig, she honed her skills, improving with every gig, learning with every mistake made live and I guarantee she will be getting high on the endorphins her body is producing naturally. And reason she is feeling happy is that singing/making music is proven to be good for you. The longer time you have been singing and playing an instrument, then the larger and more active the nine - count them nine - centres in your brain that are active while playing and singing become. They spread and interconnect with each other. But the most precious gift her singing gives her, is the ability to transform disturbing emotions into positive feelings. She has absolutely no need for drugs, and she knows what precious gifts she has, and positive feelings release natural pleasure hormones, the exact same hormones that are substituted by opiates, which reduces the natural hormone production....creating addiction on a physical and emotional level. But she has the perfect gifts - if she didn't have those gifts she would probably be long dead. She knows it. She's not stupid. She wouldn't be where she is now is she were. I'm sure she realises how precious her gift is. Why am I sure? I am a singer, I have sung for my supper for almost 30 years. I, too have been gifted with a good voice, well above average, but not with Beth Hart's quantities or qualities. But I do know what happens when you stop drinking, doing drugs, and sing a lot. Your head gets sharper, you can literally feel negatives dissolving and transforming into good feelings and energy. And you sometimes have moments of total gratitude that you didn't mess up so badly that you couldn't sing any more thereby destroying that rarest of gifts the ability to transform, using the only instrument that goes everywhere with you, doesn't weigh a thing and get stuck in train doors, the voice. I have direct intimate experience with this, and know that singing and its transforming powers was the only thing that has kept me going through the roughest times I have ever faced - and nothing on earth would induce me to even think about risk losing that. I am incapable of imagining what my life would be like without being able to sing. I I can't - and to be honest - don't want to think about that possibility. And that can't even begin to convey the immense meaning singing has for me. Or how incredible it is when your voice hits the sweet spot, and everything seems possible, wide open and inviting, and you know the voice is working its wonder within you, relaxing just enough , with just enough tension and you ease into the flow eager to see what surprise and wonder the gig will bring. There are no words to describe feelings that don't seem to have names anyone knows, but which you know exist. And there's something else, which is why I'm certain most of what I have tried to present, so far, is pretty much in the ballpark - When I saw her sing, heard her voice, saw how her expressions were totally in synch with feeling and meanings in the songs, I knew that she lives to sing, she sings from the heart, and sings with every part of her. Her control and phrasing is incredible - and for me most telling, because if you do it yourself you recognise it others -- she sings for her self, and her joy, and her release. And hey, if anyone wants to come along, they are welcome. The good feeling we share with her a wonderful, beautiful byproduct. Not completely inessential to the process, of course, but by no means as central as most audiences seem to believe. She lends us wings for a while - and what could be more positive than helping people to fly? Beth Hart is no Amy Winehouse, who never got clean enough to see what she was doing to herself, and sadly, only Amy Winehouse could have helped Amy Winehouse. Everything was in place for either a realisation, or a disastrous end. The world lost a great talent in Amy. I hope to spend many more years listening to new albums from Beth Hart. She is a truly great talent - I see her as up there with Billy Holliday, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and yes. And probably Amy Winehouse, too. I think Beth Hart is on the way to becoming one of the Arethas and Ninas. And if she does, then she's going to help even up the odds a bit in the survival statistics: and god knows we all deserve a break from the relentlessly monotonous "Stars" force fed us by gluttonous media moguls. Most of These "stars" honestly can't hit a note without the intervention of technology to make them appear - at very best - superficially capable, and who can't really be bothered because their looks are all that's going to sell their vapid "product". We could REALLY do with a break from that, all of us could. Maybe we will be lucky enough to see, and above all hear, an idea of how Janis Joplin might have sounded like had she survived. Keep it up Beth, and when things get hard, remember what Buddy guy once said: If you play the blues, you lose them. And thank you for coming early enough in my lifetime that I get to enjoy your gift.
agreed this once an addict always an addict is the very thinking that fucks recovery she/whoever need just let go let god n get on whith next chapter of life without hang up's doubts ect from days now passed fuck it how can see ahead if always looking back eh??? maybe 12steps government rehab bs is designed keep people victims instead releasing them as survivors everyone got demons just upto person how long n how far dance with them hey...

Nasty comment, yours. Artists, creative folks are more vulnerable thsn most, especially in these stressful environments. But *what* they give us! She's got the talent, and let's wish her well.
notice it's always "Beth Hart does" because she is just a cover band type of singer. She hasn't an original bone in her body. Janis Joplin rip off artist. boring.
+Norris Tapley what the hell does color have to do with anything here? Do not make it about color; how ignorant. Everyone can express their opinion online. If you dislike mine, ignore it. I am telling it like it is. She is NOT an original. Talent like her on every corner in NYC.
+drdotislovinlife Most of her stuff is original. Check out her albums: Immortal, 37 Days, Leave the Light On, Screamin for My Supper, Bang Bang, Boom Boom, and her latest, Better Than Home. She's an excellent singer AND songwriter. I know people post a lot of her covers, because she does a great job singing older blues, but check out songs from some of the albums I posted. Really great stuff. Search for Beth Hart Live at the Paradiso. That's where she shines singing her own stuff.
