  • Join me to explore the historic town of Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The town of Kirkcudbright became a magnet for Scottish artists in the late 19th century, and is now known as The Artists' Town because of this association. Kirkcudbright is recognisable for its different coloured houses with the blend of medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture. Kirkcudbright is a town, a parish and a royal burgh from 1455 in Kirkcudbrightshire, of which it is traditionally the county town, within Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Kirkcudbright has recently been cited as one of Scotland's best towns to retire.
    Dumfries and Galloway is one of the 32 unitary council areas of Scotland, located in the western part of the Southern Uplands. It is bordered by East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire, and South Lanarkshire to the north; Scottish Borders to the north-east; the English county of Cumbria, the Solway Firth, and the Irish Sea to the south, and the North Channel to the west. The administrative centre and largest settlement is the town of Dumfries. The second largest town is Stranraer, located 76 miles (122 km) to the west of Dumfries on the North Channel coast.
    Dumfries and Galloway corresponds to the historic shires of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, and Wigtownshire, the last two of which are collectively known as Galloway. The three counties were combined in 1975 to form a single region, with four districts within it. The districts were abolished in 1996, since when Dumfries and Galloway has been a unitary local authority. For lieutenancy purposes, the area is divided into three lieutenancy areas called Dumfries, Wigtown, and the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright, broadly corresponding to the three historic counties.

    Hi Paul Firstly big apologies for our tardiness we are now back from our Xplorations of the Picos de Europa and are doing TH-cam catch up on video watching! Loving this what a fabulous area! Love all the historic buildings and then the brightly coloured painted doors and windows! The bright Barbie pink Fiat 500 tickled us next to those historic remains! Lovely narration in our favourite Northern accent! Loved you on that giant chair of course you had to check it out! What a fabulous market and yay to free parking 😂 sold! Then a lovely forest and lakeside walk, tragic about the house lost to a fire! And you can visualise that jetty being used back in the day! We did enjoy these Xplorations 👍❤️

      Hi Nick n Jill, I hope you had a great trip. I'd say enjoying your trip comes first before watching any videos. That's my motto when away anyway. I also recently took a month off from all things TH-cam and enjoyed it a bit too much. Kirkcudbright was quite the gem of a place with lots of history. It's actually the first time I had heard of it and it seems the masses haven't heard of it either. Those Barbie cars get everywhere ha ha. I thought you would approve of the free parking and this town had it in abundance. The walk around St Mary's Isle was very hermit friendly and seemed to have a lot of history in itself. Thank you very much for watching. Enjoy the rest of your week 👍🙂Paul

    Morning Paul, that was great. 🙂 It's such a beautiful place and I can understand why artists were drawn here, the harbour is so beautiful and I loved the sound of all of the birds, its like our garden ! Loved the castle, such a beautiful location for it and the church was lovely too, Interesting where it got its name from, shame it was closed.
    I can see why people like to retire here with the quietness and reasonable house prices. Pretty coloured houses with all of the various architecture and the marina looked really peaceful. The farmers market looked good too, quite big ! I would love to have done that circular walk. Enjoyed seeing this and all of the information and history of this place that you gave . Can't leave another like but will leave this 👏😃~ Anna

      Hi Anna, it was lovely peaceful town until you hit the farmers market which seemed to sell quite a variety of goods. It seems that a lot of the Scottish castles are closed for inspection at present and they don't seem in any hurry to open them. The circular walk around St Mary's Isle was very hermit friendly as I barely saw a soul. I'm glad you enjoyed this explore of Kirkcudbright along with some of its history, Thank you very much for watching. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul

      Hi Anita, Kirkcudbright sure was a little gem of a place and lots of history. We can sometimes get a bit blase about old buildings etc in the UK. It was also pretty peaceful, well except for the Farmer's market which sold a wide variety of goods. The walk around St Mary's Isle was very hermit friendly and peaceful. Love all the houses and you can see they are cared for. Such a shame the church and the castle were closed. Would have been interesting to see inside. Quiet looking high street. Lots of great history here. Great seeing everyone out enjoying the market and free parking is always a good thing. A great tour mate. Really enjoyed. 👍🏻🚶🏻‍♂️🚶‍♀️

      Hi Watto, I'd not heard of this town before I ventured into the area. I had to learn how to pronounce it too. I hope I got it right ha ha. Kirkcudbright is a smashing little town full of history. It seems a lot of castles in Scotland are closed for repair at the moment. They don't seem in too much of a hurry to complete the work either. Kickcudbright was quite a peaceful place until you hit the hustle and bustle of the market. Free parking is a unique thing these days. I parked my car in the main car park and expected to pay. Most councils fleece as much as they can these days without thinking of the negative impact that might have. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour. Thank you very much for taking time to watch. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul

    Thanks for showing me how this place is pronounced Paul, I've only ever seen it written down. Looks like a nice town, can see why people retire there. Reminds me of what Britain used to be like (Christ I sound old 😅) some nice spots there for wild camping out on the 'isle' great narration Paul and welcome back

    • @TheHikingHermit
      @TheHikingHermit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Matt, well I'm not sure I totally nailed the pronunciation but it's a darn sight better than what I would have first attempted 😂 The town was pretty peaceful until you hit the farmers market which seemed to sell quite the array of goods. I only saw 2 people on St Mary's Isle and that was at the very start and the very end. I'd say it would be a great place for a wild camp. I thought I'd kick off my comeback with a full narration video. The ugly mush will be back on the next one tho 😂 Thanks for watching 🙂

    Fascinating place Paul
    Love the pronunciation- never realised that was how you say it.
    Never visited there but it looks a beautiful little place. The harbour is pretty and it’s interesting that so many fishing boats are still based there.
    The Castle must have had a commanding position across the estuary and fascinating to see that an original castle is in a different place. Must be u usual that - maybe because the estuary had sorted up a bit at some stage?
    Enjoyed the final walk - very beautiful.
    Hope you’re having a good week mate 👍👍👍

    • @TheHikingHermit
      @TheHikingHermit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Dave, yeah I had to research that name before I left and then the lady at the place I was staying also said it. I'm not sure I completely nailed it but it was a lot better than what I would have attempted without knowing. It sounds like Kirkcudbright had possibly 3 different castles at differing times. A tad unusual I would say for quite a small town. The walk around St Mary's Isle was very hermit friendly and didn't see a soul except at the very start and very end. I'm glad you enjoyed the explore. Thank you very much for watching. I hope you enjoy the rest of your week 🙂👍Paul

    Hope you are well 😊
    Great video with lots of information.
    It looked a lovely place
    Loved the castle.
    Shame the church was closed
    Think we will add it to our must visit list on one of our Scottish roadtrips.
    Hope you're having a good week 😊

    Hi Paul,
    Finally, I caught your notification.
    Your voice over sounded, I would say, Really beyond profession. Nice and smooth flaw is remarkable.
    I truly enjoy history, and architecture in this cozy town. scallops? I am in hahaha
    Hmmm.. Elder PPL retire on this land for silence and charm? Florida is one of the states PPL like to retire, BC no state income tax to pay and new HOA housing is always built constantly. Beautiful sea salt life at the end, maybe. Boats and seafood. hahhah
    Impressive filming on stone houses, woods, historical monument, ruin, churches....you name it. The weather was overcast, but you always pull off the best. I can tell so many potential visitors are planning to visit right now watching your complete trave guide vid.
    Well done, Paul. Bravo!! Miss your humor...hahahaha Ooops Did I miss vids before this?? So sorry.. I did not know. OTW.
    I am glad you enjoy film making at your pace... Please allow me some time to drop my comments on those vids I missed. I had scramble this past week, still having muscle ache hahaha. Ta-Ta...you travel safe, Paul

      Hi Ms Kayak, it's my first video in over a month. I took a break from all things TH-cam. Over sounded? Do you mean my chit chat was a bit too loud? Kirkcudbright was quite the historical little town to have a look around. Not many towns this size have had 3 different castles in their time. Ah I guess this is my serious documentary voice video 😂 My dry humour may make an outing some time soon. Ah scrambling. I hope you had fun. Sounds like you're doing more hiking than me at present. Tho my next video will be a hiking one. Thank you very much for watching. It's much appreciated. Great to see you. Have a great week 🙂👍Paul

    I'd no idea that so many scallops were landed here !, My absolute favourite food but I'd never get through that lot even if I did retire here haha Well seems I'm too young to qualify for that anyway ! After watching this I feel quite ashamed that my main reason for visiting this fabulous little town in the past was for the most wonderful chippy that had monkfish & squid on the menu !, sadly closed last time I visited so had to make do with eating at the Selkirk Arms. You really did a lot of research here with so many historic facts. My Scottish friends might quibble slightly over your pronunciation of Kirkcudbright , but to be honest it's pretty damn close & could have been much much worse so well done 😊 Lucky you got to visit when the Spring Fling was on & the market too looked amazing. If you get the chance come back again when it's the Riding of the Marches ... A Border Town thing .. Haha that chair really suited you...Great video Paul showing that this little town has so much to offer

      Well I had a bit of a wander round and it was quite the gem of a place that the masses don't seem to have found yet. I wasn't 100% sure whether I had nailed the pronunciation of Kirkcudbright but then someone who used to be local watched the video and confirmed it was wrong. Kirkcudbright does have a lot of history for such a small town and also had 3 different castles. I seemed to land lucky with the Spring Fling and the farmers market being on when I visited. I'm glad you enjoyed the explore and some of things you have been missing on your visits tho I didn't spot the chippy ha ha. Thank you very much for watching 🙂👍

    hey, there's my favorite hermit! i noticed you didn't greet the crows we could hear. perhaps off camera? always gotta say "ho crows." i liked the colorful houses. i feel like i did a puzzle once that had some of these doorways. look at you chatting away with people. did you know the spring fling was happening when you booked your trip? loved seeing the farmer's market and st mary's isle (SO green and peaceful!), but my favorite was you in the the throne. 😁 this was a beautiful place to visit. how far is this place from your home? 🛴❤

    • @TheHikingHermit
      @TheHikingHermit  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Anne, do you know many hermits ha ha. Those crows weren't half making a racket and lots of nests in those tree tops. The houses there were pretty unique and colourful. I'm quite sociable for a hermit. You might be surprised at how much so when I want to be. I heard about the Spring Fling from the lady whose B&B I was staying at. I would have took some video of inside of some of the art studios but they were mostly cramped and full of people. I thought the event was worth a mention tho. St Mary's Isle was a lot more peaceful than I expected and had to go off track a bit to get the better views. Still worth a walk tho and a lot flatter than I'm used to. I had to sit on Odin's throne. It was a big chair. Kirkcudbright is about 3 hours drive from where I live. I did venture further from home onto a couple of the Scottish islands too on this trip where my ugly mug will appear on some of those videos 😂Thank you very much for watching. Have a great week 👍🙂Paul

    Hi Paul, what a picturesque and quaint historic town. I remember we used the name in one of our pronunciation videos 😀 I didn't know about it being known as 'The Artists' Town' but I can see why it would attract artists to come and paint there.
