I've been to the York Plant several times when they had their open house. It's great to talk to the workers who take pride in their work. It is special to me because my Street Glide Special was made there.
I worked harley york in82,83. Was laid off with 399 others. I worked in the old building. Used to be an armament factory. I ran screw machines which is what they made the shell casing on. My son worked there too. He is a foundation driller now

In 45 years of riding I've owned many motorcycles from many different manufacturers but there is something special about a Harley. It's U.S. motorcycle history.
In the early 80's when Harley was struggling financially, they were trying to reinvent themselves and find better way of manufacturing. Harley asked Honda, who had been manufacturing motorcycles for several year in Marysville, Ohio if they could visit and observe Honda's motorcycle manufacturing process. Harley engineers were very impressed with the Honda processes and went back and reinvented their manufacturing processes. One of the technical magazines published an article about Harley's Jelley Bean production method. From that article you tell Honda had helped the in many ways. I was proud to see how much Honda had helped a competitor.
Yes- Harley took the Japanese JIT system and customized it for their specific needs- called it MAN (Materials As Needed). This, along with finally developing an engine that didn't need a top end job after 10,000 miles and didn't leak oil all over the driveway; helped Harley-Davidson become profitable and sustainable. Also, let's not forget- the US government legislated extra tariffs on foreign motorcycles 750cc or higher.
I was at the last smoke out in Rockingham, NC. Along with festivities was drag racing among anyone who wanted to on the drag strip. Two HD FXRs and two Victory Vegas bikes blew everything else there away. This included many modern liter superbikes. Yes they had some performance work done . Pipes, cams high flow intakes. Somethings the average owner could afford to do. Basically getting the govt restrictions out. Slow they werent. At least not in the quarter mile.
You sound jealous, can't afford one? If a harley owner wanted a crotch rocket they could have easily bought one but they didn't. You're rag on HD only works if people should buy what others want them to buy instead of the things they want to buy.

Indeed, someone didn't do their homework before making a baseless comment. Harley keeps an engine design around for many years longer than other companies which adds to it's reliability stats (time is part of reliability statistics) and it's big bore cylinders produce a hefty amount of torque. As a employee at General Motors for over 20 years I know assembly line work can be back breaking. Also every time you see a robot doing a job, a human was doing that job at one time. They just cut jobs left and right and the union just stands there and does nothing. The logic is... As long as it's not their job there cutting it's all part of the game. You might get two or three union reps that care, but most are just putting in their time until retirement.
Nobody recruited you to work on the line for GM. You applied for the job. If you spent a career working for GM you had health care benefits & a paycheck and ultimately a pension. GM & Harley Davidson are publicly traded for profit companies operating in a capitalist society.
I recently ordered and received a 2023 Breakout in Australia. It wasn't until I had ordered it that I found out it was being built in Thailand and not coming from the US like my previous HD, I was disappointed to think it wasn't a US build. When the bike arrived I was happy with the build quality and the look of the bike. After all its still a Harley and my fourth M8, awesome bikes.
I have had 6 new Harleys since 2016, this is my worst nightmare in ownership. The crack head who assembled my ‘21 Pan America must have hated the new direction the company is taking with the revolution max motor. I have had screws back out without thread locker, the electronics and reliability have been a joke. If I wanted an unreliable expensive adv bike, I would have bought a KTM. This my last Harley, going back to Honda
over 100 years and they still can't get the engine right. From the underpowered oil pump to the pressed together flywheel to the cheap shoes on the cam chain tensioners they are designed to provide a steady stream of service revenue.
Didn't the Kansas City factory shut down a few years ago? Also, no mention of the Capitol Drive plant near Milwaukee or the Juneau Avenue original factory.
Kansas city was shut down approximately 3 years ago. Capitol Drive was shut down more than 10 years ago. No manufacturing has been done at Juneau since the early 70's but serves as their headquarters.
I toured the Capitol Drive plant where they produced the Sportster powertrain one month before they closed it down. My Grandfather worked there in the 70's.
Not at all, i own 3 of them now. Tried Indian for a bit but that was a let down so sold it and got another Harley. I guess the bigger question here is that if you hate Harley, why are you here? my guess is you just enjoy being an attention seeking troll who has never owned a Harley
Nessuna casa motociclistica si può avvicinare o paragonare al mondo , alla casa motociclistica HARLEY DAVIDSON.....🌍👍 e' la migliore di tutto il pianeta.
Please bear with me, as I'm just reminiscing. I owned 4 different Harley's, a 1992 FXRS Convertible, a 1995 Electraglide Classic, a 2001 Electraglide Classic, and a 2004 Low Rider. My favorite was my 2001, was still a carburetor bike and had the best sounding engine of all. I down sized to the Low Rider because my wife could no longer ride with me, and that was a mistake, missed the faring and windshield and the overall weight and size. Sold my last one in 2014 at the age of 69.
I love my 2017 soft tail slim…it’s got the two tone denim and black paint..black rims and chrome spokes..Pythons..swing arm bag..and tuned with low end torque cam…I am impressed with the build quality and performance…this is coming from a guy who always had sport bikes..what’s the difference between a Harley Davidson and a Hoover vacuum cleaner……you can get 2 dirtbags on a Harley….🤣🤣.
It means they're Bikers...their passion to ride isn't limited to one brand. The parts on a Harley come from all over the world, not just the USA. If all the components were made here the motorcycles would cost more than double their current price. Most of the aftermarket parts come from China...even Jap bikes are built here in the USA. It's a matter of economics. I've ridden almost every brand except Russian made bikes only because I can't find them as easy as the others. They all offer a unique experience that Bikers should embrace. It'll make you appreciate what you ride even more...
@@stuwhyte479 it tells you that just cause you work at Harley doesn’t make Harley your favorite company. Just like working at McDonald’s and liking Taco Bell more.

No, the over priced is a function of American labor costs, corporate profit margins, pluss more profit for dealers with building and staff costs. 😊 It ain't the 1970's $$$$$$$$$$$$$
From the factory they are built for riding, not racing. That's what Jap bikes are for. I enjoy riding 60-80 mph a lot more than I did riding over 100 on my Jap bike.
Harley is not for your average rider anymore. Have you seen the prices on these bikes. Other companies are doing much better in terms of pricing and getting models to their customer. I stick with my 2008 Harley. I 'll buy other manufacturers now...
The equivalent bikes are just as expensive! So enjoy spending the same amount of money elsewhere. Indian's equivalent bikes to the standard touring models are actually more expensive. BMW R18 touring is around the same price. Moto Guzzi touring cruiser around the same price. Harley's pricing is perfectly reasonable for what they are selling. I bought a brand new Harley at 20 years old a few years back. I since sold that and got a 07 road king but still. There is really no average rider anymore!!! Younger people are simply not riding! The average age of motorcycle buyer is now 50!!! This means that HALF of all motorcycle buyers are OVER the age of 50. I have been riding since I was 18 in 2018. I cannot name a single person my age who rides motorcycles anymore. I have like 2 friends my age who bought 1 motorcycle, rode it a few months, and quit. The average age of motorcycle buyer is going up. Just 10 years ago the age would have been closer to around 40. And before anyone says this is Harley nostolgia, I said the average age of motorcycle buyers all together not just Harley. It doesn't help that harley nostolgia is usually not appreciated by people my age. I have only met 2 people under the age of 30 that also own Harley. With that said, Harley could certainly return to making smaller engine bikes around 80 cubes with less features and bring the prices down by 5 thousand plus, but it is not just Harley. People buying these bikes want a lot. The market Harley is in is very demanding. People want the largest motor with the most torque and the best sound system etc. Indian is doing the same thing. Same market. The new softails are very popular and amazing bikes. monoshock beasts with more power than anyone in 1985 could dream of having on a motorcycle. With that said, I am still an evo and twin cam guy myself.
@@steveperry1344 So then, what you are saying is they are reasonably priced? Did you simply not factor in inflation? When you factor in inflation, you are only paying about 3-4 thousand more for a bike that has way more power , features etc. This is what the market wants. People want these features. $5200 in 1980 dollars is $19,000 in 2023 dollars. 2023 Harley Davidson Street Glide msrp is 21,999 dollars 2023 Indian Chieftan msrp is 22,999 dollars. Factor these things in: the newer bikes have WAY Bigger engines with WAY more power and they are paired to 6 speed transmissions that will knock your shovelhead out of the park the newer bikes have way more advanced sound systems, navigation, radio, etc the newer bikes have key fobs that allow the bikes to be started without inserting a key the new bikes have ABS , traction control, etc the new bikes have suspension that would put that 1980 shovel head you have to shame

Sad ending, my friend 😂
been to york plant pretty cool watching them build them
As a employee at General Motors for over 20 years I know assembly line work can be back breaking.
Lazy people of this world, everything is junk today
So true an must of the parts are not made in America
If you want to be able to afford a new Harley they have to cut labour costs.
@@joelbuyno5500 You were obviously not around in the sixties.
Great video of an American classic!
Me too! Love my American made bike.
I had American made wife , she would not mind at all ! I stopped making payments and let the repo man do his job !
America ASSEMBLED bike.
Many parts are made overseas…
Cause you don't know any better.
If it was US built, Im sure the cost would be a lot more expensive
For sure that's why they assemble in Thailand
York Steel Toe Tour was AWESOME.
@@bartman2144
Didn't realize that Capitol Drive had shut down. And Juneau is hardly their HQ anymore. Can't keep up with them. What next?
The Building is now a CVS Warehouse
Kansas facilities all moved to Thailand plant.
I toured the Capitol Drive plant where they produced the Sportster powertrain one month before they closed it down. My Grandfather worked there in the 70's.
Harley Davidson perfect beautiful wonderful. Love from Sabah (North Borneo), Malaysia. Happy Sabbath.
Harley Davidson factories are crucial to Harley's success. Well Duh! No factories, no Harleys
Assembled in the USA with parts from Taiwan and China.
Just like EVERY other manufacturer.
How could there be so many people wanting Harleys? It's nuts!
You either understand or you don't. If you don't then just move on. 👋
Not at all, i own 3 of them now. Tried Indian for a bit but that was a let down so sold it and got another Harley. I guess the bigger question here is that if you hate Harley, why are you here? my guess is you just enjoy being an attention seeking troll who has never owned a Harley
@@snakebite6511 no I build my own bikes, I would'nt own a Harley because they're overpriced and not worth as much afterwards.

I didn't see the part where HD DONT paint the underside of the fenders.
A company that hasn't moved on to 21st century engineering, especially engines.
The best brand Motorcicle !...🇺🇸
I love my 2017 soft tail slim…it’s got the two tone denim and black paint..black rims and chrome spokes..Pythons..swing arm bag..and tuned with low end torque cam…I am impressed with the build quality and performance…this is coming from a guy who always had sport bikes..what’s the difference between a Harley Davidson and a Hoover vacuum cleaner……you can get 2 dirtbags on a Harley….🤣🤣.
Hmm, who am I to argue with the Hoover comment? ☺️. I ride a Ducati!
What I like in Harley Davidson is the roaring sound
Did you notice the 3 workers wearing kawasaki, Honda and Indian Tee shirts? What does that tell you!
That even Honda, Kawasaki, and Indian riders wanna work for Harley 😏
@@SurfyGamesfreak ya rite Luis Calva..wow give yaself and all your gay friends a big slice of Harry Davidson clothing company raisin pie.

People can say what they want about Harley Davidson motorcycles. Of all the countless numbers of motorcycles I have owned, which were manufactured by many different motorcycle companies, Harley Davidson has the best fit and finish. Their paint quality impeccable to all the other bikes I own and once owned.
All other motorcycle companies are overwhelmed by Harley Davidson ability to build an engine with such large capacity and so little power .
Torque is number 1 with many people, not HP.
The best motorcycle in the world
Most powerful engines in the Motorcycle world ? Really!

Would have liked to see more about Quality Control.

Ok, so I'm not the only one who noticed that. He also called the Soft Tail a "soff-till"... whatever that is.
Having worked a production line for 5 years, I can safely say there's no job that's more mind numbing.
Go woke go broke. FHD
I heard that also. I met a guy that did 15 years there and finally quit. HD bikes don't impress him. He bought an Indian 😀
It's not bad after you go insane. I have worked in assembly for 20+ years. Pays the bills.
Now I got them steadily depressin', low-down, mindless, workin' at the carwash blues! 😅
So do you think working at a carmanufactor production line is any better?
😀😃😄😁😆😅😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Everytime he mentioned a worker who's passionate about what their doing, or how many jobs these factories also create, a robot was shown.
Robots are a simple reality in modern manufacturing.
I agree that HD builds great bikes but for Asian countries where roads are not like the states, overheating is a problem. I know, I bought a 2020 FXDR 114. Sadly had to sell it. I do not like to baby a bike, it is serviced and cared for but when I ride, I ride, not worry.
Chinese copies are made for Asian roads.
Y'all lost me at, " most powerful and reliable engines in the world"..😂
The new technology eliminates the need for Harley to carry a tool pouch and only carry a cellphone to call a tow truck.
No tools = no ability to fix simple things or help someone out. 😮
Wow, the factory is really cool
Separate engine and gear box, the way they used to build them in the 1920's😁
The TCs just looked unitized. It was a strengthening feature.
Yes, you can do engine work or transmission work, independently.
Magnifique image de l'entreprise Harley davidson.

Fantastic film , i never appreciated Harley Davidson before seeing this film , BUT always liked the look and performance of the compact 883 ? i recently got chance to have a ride on my friends 883 and was very surprised at the performance , But the only Problem with Harley Davidson is they are Far out of my price range / which is Ok because that the price of Quality ,,😂👍, Thank,s for reading ,,,,,
No, the over priced is a function of American labor costs, corporate profit margins, pluss more profit for dealers with building and staff costs. 😊 It ain't the 1970's $$$$$$$$$$$$$
Great video
I love my 3 old Harley Davidson's but when I travel long distance its on my Honda Goldwing.

Very nice video Harley Davidson ❤
Харли это легенда...мотосайклс мирового уровня...
HD has one of the worst CC to horsepower ratios of any bike. 1800cc for 94hp lol

I 'll buy other manufacturers now...
i bought a 1980 electraglide brand new for $5200, now they're over $20k i bet.
2023 Harley Davidson Street Glide msrp is 21,999 dollars
2023 Indian Chieftan msrp is 22,999 dollars.
Factor these things in: the newer bikes have WAY Bigger engines with WAY more power and they are paired to 6 speed transmissions that will knock your shovelhead out of the park the newer bikes have way more advanced sound systems, navigation, radio, etc
the newer bikes have key fobs that allow the bikes to be started without inserting a key
the new bikes have ABS , traction control, etc
the new bikes have suspension that would put that 1980 shovel head you have to shame

Let's cobble together a bunch of old videos add some voice commentary that has nothing to do with what's happening on screen and call it a brand new video! And don't even bother to edit the clip of the production board showing the date of 1/18/2012! 😂😂 Don't forget to show the same clips over and over and have the unrelated commentary repeat itself!
