As an austrian that attended Ballon con. Ballon is just the german word for balloon and it is named after the TO not after any geographical place. So Cal was right, it is actually balloon con
Isnt the Ballon Con organized by the Ballonfabrik, an organization located in a former hot air balloon manufacture? So not only a name but an even better story and an actual geographical place.
You guys missed that Beezy from the Nitpicking Nerds made top 16 with KARADOR at our GG NPHX tournament. It was so sick. And the pilot that won with Rocco is so good at the game it's crazy.
That top 16 game was cancer lol Idk how I ended up staxing the table so damn hard with a turbo ob nix deck but it was a very crazy tournament overall and well played
Hey its Caleb M, the Malcolm Tana player here. Thanks for the shout! I feel like we are transitioning into more creativity and fresh viability then we have seen in some time. It will be very interesting to see how the meta shakes out with such drastic changes, maybe all of this is for the better!
Hey Caleb, I played the last pre ban 10K w Malcom Tana and was first seed into the top 16 finishing 5th. Deck was always amazing and now it’s, imho, relatively even better. Great job! Way to rep the truth.. that Malcom Lives! (Fuckin OBVIOUSLY, if you ask me?) did us Malcom Stans proud 🫡
I think my biggest issue with Wizards taking over commander (and now Cedh indirectly) is their willingness to want to give cedh sanctioned tournaments (possibly) but also their harsh stance on proxies not being allowed in sanctioned events. So cedh would quickly become a "pay to win" format where you can't play with the highest power levels cards unless you can afford them.
I imagine cedh will stick around on its own in that regard. Basically a wizards sanctioned tour is going to look lame in comparison. Best I can think of is like natural bodybuilders vs enhanced.
As opposed to an RC that wouldn't even acknowledge us as a legitimate part of the format? Your proxy tournaments will still exist, so the pay to win argument is just fear mongering
I’m totally chillin if peopel are enjoying how the format is moving, but oh my god I just don’t see how tournaments don’t end up mostly going to time. Games just seem so drawn out with no clear moment to act. Everyone around me is just playing thrasios
The latest tournament I was in had two Thrasios decks, and a lot of turbo. We had a few draws, but I think maximum 25% per round. Thrasios/Tymna won at the end, but I also had quadruple Grixis pods.
Kaladin was definitely the excitement and interest driver in “The Way of Kings.” I love the diverse character development from book to book. Greatest modern book series in any genre!
30:25 That right there. That's what I play, and I get a lot of shit about it, but boy do I relish the many of games where the table says things like, "We're about to just die to this angel..."
I think another card where people are lazy is adnaus. It disables so many good cards, it is insane. It is one of the best cards in the meta, but a lot decks just have 50% win chance with it. The card incarnation technique has if you play 4 one card wincons as creatures (Hoarding Broodlord, Razaketh, Disciples of Gix, Hullbreaker) also a 38% chance. (With 6 hits >50%). But now you can play way more cool stuff. And havw counter protection build in. In short, rethink adnaus. Would be a nice topic though.
The AGL final pod was kinnan, rogsi, blue farm, and dargo/silas. The kinnan turn 1 seat 1 played trinisphere and then blue farm used copy artifact later to make another trinisphere. I reverse thoracled to win. Weird game.
Fellas told me you gave me a shoutout Ian. Lol Thanks a ton. Yes, I agree, people should play more removal. But we can also see if I alpha strike someone & not even activate Pride's ability. 😎😎😂
My favorite part of the Way of Kings is when the Jessna died. I'm kidding, Jessna is great. I think the fight with the Assassin in White was very nicely done. Although Kaladin finally accepting the first oath was also pretty great.
I went from Najeela to Yuriko recently. The meta seems to be shifting towards more creature heavy strategies. I played a tournament the weekend and didn’t see any Tymna/Kraum decks. I finished 4th overall on Yuriko. It feels like a breath of fresh air without Dockside. Also what do you guys think about a return of Tymna/Thrasios breakfast combo decks?
Yoshimaru x Thrasios (Scheming Fence > Grim Monolith > Training Grounds) Unctus, Grand Metatect (Marvin) Ludevik > Kraum TmoK Breakfast ft Chains of Mephistopheles
On the subject of being excited to play Urza again, I've been thinking about putting a Galazeth build together. I feel like it would go kinda crazy with no dockside in the format.
Refurbished my Korvold deck to be fringe Food Chain Prossh - consistently goes for a win turn 3. Love to see a video on brewing Korvold. Smashed Atraxa, made Kinnan. Remade Sythis enchanments, Heliod Ballista becomes a decent win option again without the need for anti Dockside Ouphe effects. Runs Auriok Salvagers and LED into Finale too. When Wizards unbans Crypt and Lotus and maybe even Dockside for tier 4 then all this brewing goes out the window.
Turbo decks might have taken a small hit and essentially slowed down. That doesn’t mean the decks aren’t good l, it just means they aren’t as fast as they were before and still work! We got this!
I was piloting a Rocco Blood Pod based decks and still works wonders for me. Maybe we are just blinded that it only works before because of Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt. Just my two cents though..
Although I am optimistic about WOTC controlling the format going forward, the sentiment at 5:00 I think is just naive. They may say that they have the best interest of the players in mind, and the more fun people have the more they buy our product; and I believe them. However, all it takes is some higher ups changing methedology and that's it. At the end of the day, the people now in charge of edh have corporate overlords who can force them into changing things in the format even against their advice.
I would wager that realistically, Hasbro is less concerned about the actual management of specific formats and is more worries about selling product/being profitable. I am more worried about product releases being more aggressive (something the RC had pushed back on) than I am about corporate intervention in specific formats. I really don’t think anyone at Hasbro hq gives a shit about the micro functionings of the game. They care about the big picture and that is a force that is unstoppable regardless of who is in control of any given format. I understand the concern, but I think writing off the opinion as naive is disregarding the wants of everyone involved in the process. I could argue your opinion is too cynical but I don’t think that is helpful. I mostly think that the format will be managed just fine and the real danger to the format/game comes from market oversaturation.
@TheMindSculptors My comment is really about concern about product saturation like you are saying. They might power creep harder for profit. I'm not really concerned with how they will manage the format which is why I said in my comment that I am overall optimistic.
the reaction to the bans seems to be very divided, people like Lemora's Cards are telling excitement is dead and people are not showing up, and half other people are like us like more excited to play than in ages
So I was just getting into cEDH ahead of the bans and I had planned to play Niv. Well Niv seems dead now. Any recommendations on a deck to look into to get my feet wet in the format?
Was at the AGL tournament, the hurricane really messed a lot up, but I’m pretty sure it was another Rogsi that too 4’d, could be wrong though. I got into the top 16 in that event with Trazyn, loving the lack of dockside tbh 😅
Will you be equally sad if, in 3-6 months, WOTC unbans Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt? In your opinions, was it just Dockside that had been stagnating the format?
Wait wait wait, WHAT ABOUT KAMAHL TYMNA! You have a built in win con, you have Black tutoring, and you have Tymna's incredible card draw! The best part is even if you've got a clunker in the CZ, you're in GREEN, so you can actually cast a 7 or 8 drop in a Hatebear list. I'm also super curious about Tymna/Sakashima, but that needs actual win cons (but you're really really good at drawing into them, and with a slightly slower meta the more diesely builds like either Tymna idea mentioned get a lot better). I think Thrasios won't offer enough, I'd rather just run Kamahl and have a built in Craterhoof or Sakashima and draw like crazy, Thrasios does very little unless you have infinite mana, and I think we can all agree if you're on those kinds of lines you want to be on Kinnan, those other colours just get in Kinnan's way! Yeah, stuff like Zur and Kess were already very strong decks, but they were a bit too diesely for most people's taste specifically because they benefited little from Jeweled Lotus AND Mana Crypt (unless you were crazy enough to run Signets sources), they just 'felt' so much slower than something like Tivit or Kraum (which could easily come out turn 1 in the old meta, heck people mulliganed to have a turn 1 Kraum or Rhystic Study/Mystic Remora).
For the lo e of it all... there is no need to ever Helm lavinia. You have grown. You have learned. Show it. Im not saying dont play azorius. Im saying dont play a do nothing stqx piece in the command zone. You just talked about nothing but creature combo decks. Play tameshi, wheeliod, ishai/krark, Zur, DEREVI, 4mana narset, thrasios/bruse... try out stuff. Tune a traditionally agreesively slanted deck to hang in the pocket and throw slants and button hooks. Play a good running game(control) to set up the QB options.
I dont think it was as soon as Wizards started directly designing for it. That was the death knell. The initial downfall was when the format moved from the kitchen table with friends to LGS with randos. Too many people cannot have meaningful conversations pregame to outline what they want, so you end up having stompers and saltines in pods together which was never supposed to happen.
@@TheMindSculptors This is for cEDH. EDH can still vary widely due to rule zero and the pod you play in. My reality can vary from yours. We play with different people and pods in different stores. My store has a healthy EDH crowd that rules zeros well. The cEDH players are also enjoyable to play and interact with.
Just as fast? Idk what you’re playing against but out of the 12 games I’ve played since the ban two were won in turn 3 by rog si and the rest absolutely go to time.
