I grew up in a very rural area and our town dump used to be run by a couple of older men. The dumpster was kind of down in a pit, with a road built up on either side and they built a shed above it on a platform. They would hang their heads out the window of the shed over the dumpster and comment on what you were throwing away. It was like the old guys from the Muppet Show heckling your garbage. When I got my drivers license one of the first places I was allowed to drive by myself was the dump on Saturday mornings and I'd always hope we didn't have any trash that would generate a comment from the guys. Every once in awhile people would accidently throw their car keys in with their bag of garbage. They would stop the compactor and fish them out with a long pole they had with a hook on the end, but the following week you had to bring them a pie.

The Best of covering 4 years shows just how far Nate has come in his reading skills and ability to get a thought out for us listeners. Years ago he would be all over the map and eventually finish with “you know” without fully getting the thought out. The Nate of today now reads and speaks like a college graduate compared to 4 years ago!

As a college student my buddies and I discovered a warehouse bakery that Krispy Kreme used to produce donuts for distribution to gas stations. Whatever they produced that wasn’t trucked out that day ended up in a dumpster. We would regularly dumpster dive and come home with garbage bags full of sealed boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts. The knowledge of how to score donuts was passed onto younger students for several years. Successful raids continued for years even after a security guard was stationed to watch the dumpster and the dumpster was padlocked. It would have been easier to steal a box from a store than to dumpster dive but the thrill of dumpster donuts was too great to give up. Thanks for the great topic Brakepad, Wheezy, and Dustbin!

Young Dusty throwing out glass coke bottles with his dad and fast forward to him composting cardboard and installing a bat house is hilarious! My husband is the very same. He used to try to impress me when we were dating in the 90’s by showing me he could hit stop signs with his Dr Pepper bottles while he was driving, and fast forward to now we own 137 acres where he grows fruit trees and berries and opens it to the community to host family and church events. I was a waitress at a local restaurant and waited on Robert Redford, who was the director! A hidden gem of a town. If you’ve never been there it is hard to describe, but Aaron, I know what you mean! The town was where rich industrialists from the turn of the century built there homes, while they worked in Chicago. I’ve always thought it was the most beautiful little towns in the world.

When I was growing up, Texas had a trash campaign “Don’t Mess With Texas.” I was probably about 10 years old when I found a scratched off lottery ticket on the ground outside at the gas station so I picked it up to see if it was a winner. After seeing it wasn’t, I threw it back on the ground and this lady pointed at me and yelled, “Hey! Don’t mess with Texas!”. My mom turned around furiously and yelled back, “Don’t mess with me!”. The lady took her advice and didn’t. 😂

In Texas we teach real estate agents that your property ownership extends to the boundaries of the property (like Dusty would see on a survey) and then all the way up through the atmosphere and down to the center of the earth. The only caveat is that people can retain riparian (water) rights, mineral rights, and even air rights to prevent people from building too high in an area.

Dusty - your observation about water being cleaner if we didn’t eat oysters is spot on. The original Jamestown colonists remarked about how clear the James River was as they settled. This was due to an abundant oyster population in the river. It would take a full year of all oysters in the river to filter the water undisturbed for the water to retain its original clarity.

Until we put an end to it, my in laws refused to spend money on normal garbage bags. Instead, they would use grocery store plastic bags. Then NJ stopped providing bags for customers. Not to worry, my father in law started walking through the produce section stealing produce plastic bags to use as garbage bags. The good news with those is, they're super strong and NEVER break spilling garbage all over the kitchen.
At least this helps to explain why my wife tears paper towels in half to save money. Evidently cheapness is hereditary.

In one of my reviews I said the teacher was a “dumpster fire.” Years later I was talking with one of the teachers that was still there and he mentioned a review from my class calling that particular teacher a dumpster fire and how it gets mentioned in every post-quarter review session with all the staff. I still stand by my statement that he was a terrible teacher, but I could’ve probably used better wording.

To find the general limits of your property, look for the county appraiser map of your area. A lot of areas have them online. The map on Zillow will also show property lines. It is not super accurate, but it is good for a general idea. How close you own up to the road depends on how large the right-of-way is. You would need a survey to find out exactly where that is.

He claims he never went in the dumpsters to get them, but if someone asked "which bin does this go in", he'd say "in the back of my truck right there." He brought home Little Tyke sand boxes, slides, bikes, scooters, plastic kiddie pools. He had 8 grandkids and they each had their own bike at his house, all free. Always interesting to listen to this as a Canadian. I think a garbage collector here makes 40$/hour! I can't imagine anyone here doing the job for 16$/hour (Ontario minimum wage is 15$/hour). And garbage collection here just comes out of our taxes, we don't have to set up an account up and pay individually. Although we do have some limits on how many garbage bags were allowed per week and there are some rural areas without collection. And I strongly agree with Dusty about litter. I can't stand when people litter, it shows such disregard and laziness and it's so easy to wait to throw something away into a garbage receptacle.

The best way to make the Olympics interesting is to root for countries' top scores in "Medals per Million Citizens." The United States with over 330 million people won 108 medals, but only got a score of of 0.33. However, the Bahamas got 2 medals and they only have 393 thousand so their score was 5.08. I do a contest with students and friends where we each pick 5 countries across 3 continents and see who can get the highest total score. Montenegro was one of my picks last year I was watching women's handball and men's water polo late into the night hoping they would medal. You'll get super invested in the success of the track and field star of a chosen carribean island nation. It's the most exciting way to watch the Olympics and you get to learn about new sports too.
    I'll go proofread this now.

I really wish Bates would be the one to run the show in Nate’s absence. He’s so positive and funny it puts a nice feel to the pod. Dusty is like a dark cloud in the distance, things are ok at the moment but something to kill the mood is coming 😂

Regarding Aaron asking about where your property ends, technically (unless you're in a weird area that's different than most) you own to the middle of the road. Now the Right of Way (RoW) is the area where utilities, street, sidewalk, curb, etc is installed and you don't have a right to that area.
The grass between a sidewalk and curb is called terrace and you're in charge of mowing and shoveling the sidewalk.

Y’all missed one of the most iconic songs dealing with trash!!
Arlo Guthrie’s 1967 classic “Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” is an almost 19 minute opus dedicated to dumping garbage from Alice’s Restaurant.
