  • You asked, and here it is. This is the preview look at the returning WASR-3 AK pattern rifle, chambered for 5.56x45mm (.223). The wASR3 is originally built in Cugir, Romania and then imported and remanufactured in the USA by Century Arms International (CAI).
In this first video, we take a first look at the example we received, going over its features and possible drawbacks.
Next, we try out different .223 AK magazines, including from Serbia, Bulgaria, Poland, and more.
Finally, we look inside the machine and compare it to the standard WASR10.
So should you consider this Romanian AK? Lets find out together....

Honestly I think the most exciting part of this is the mags. The M85 mags are currently the only steel 5.56 mags that exist in any significant quantity here, but the importation of these could change that.

  • @christopherdolan7330
    @christopherdolan7330 ปีที่แล้ว +24

Zero mag interchangeability is definitely a deal-breaker for the WASR-3.
Bulgarian and Polish 5.56 AKs are basically cross-compatible as far as I'm concerned. If the mags don't fit immediately, they'll at least wear in.
The Zastava M90 is a bit more picky, but at least their OEM polymer and steel mags are readily available. I've also been able to modify WBP mags to work in my M90.

    • @jeremiahcherry5283

AC unity and PSA 556 mags also work in the Zastava M90. Also the polymer Galil Oralite mags work and with a little additional material on the rear tab, standard Galil mags work.

@@jeremiahcherry5283 I haven't tried the AC Unity mags because I don't like the LRBHO. But I've heard they work.

And I haven't messed with Galil mags at all. I'm not interested in adding material.

As always, GREAT video Misha. $1199 with an incredibly uncommon mag type just ruins it for the public. These should have been coming in at $900 to undercut the Zastava rifles and they should have invested in a stockpile of mags, especially steel (again undercutting the M90 steel mags) and THEN this would have been a hit. It would beat out PSA as well in terms of price.. but with Zastava and PSA offerings.. this rifle falls short (for me). Had they made these under folders or provided some other unique aspect that the rest of the market didn’t have (aside from the junk pioneer 556 underfolders) then perhaps these would be tempting, but as Misha showed here, the inability to use readily available mags makes this a hard buy.. there isn’t any real draw compared to the competitors on the market.

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Honestly, grabbed one because several folks asked about them and well..not a ton 'new' on the market this summer either. As to what Century should have done with these, come on, when has that company ever really done the wise thing?

    • @jeremiahcherry5283

@@misha5670haha yeah true, Century doesn’t really operate all too well. If they ran like PSA (in terms of supply and price points) they could make a big comeback.
They truly should have brought in heaps of steel mags for these WASR3’s.. steel 556 mags are quite popular, again if they undercut the cost of Zastava they could make these fairly tempting.

    • @luked2767
      @luked2767 ปีที่แล้ว

I would put this at a price at least 100 usd less than a WASR 10 the issuies and lack of chrome lining just screams to me that century asked for wasr-3s as cheap and fast as possible not even giving then the time to order in 5.56 mandrels that work with their chrome lining for the CHF.
So it was kind of thrown together.
Just like any 5.56/. 223 I don't like them under 18" as it was designed for a 20" I own 4/5 ARs and a3 are 20s CHF CL FNH barrels I have a Vietnam clone a modern one a a fallout new Vegas wood furniture clone an 18" FN sop clone (they all have free float tubes or handgaurds ) I have a T91 similar to Mishas but I bought a 80% AR lower with T91 stampings but all the other parts are from a T91 website and it has a CHF CL I think Taiwanese 16.5. If I could get 18 or 20 I would.
It's why the M90 is so nice at 20" with a heavy profile barrel and beefy 1.5 recover.
I have alot of verps in different barrel sizes some made to look like AKs some more like RPKs (the front conversion is not fun)
But the RPK length 5.56 shoots at crazy distances same with the 7.62x39, 5.45.
      Then I have a. 308 and 7.62x54R veprs also.
They came in very cheap and many with a share back same with the siagas.
The M77s are also sweet rifles.
I still use a full sized Draco with a side rail I riveted in, magnified red dot with a bake lite grip and surplus wood front grip, sandwiched a tiny pic rail between them for a small flashlight, and put some pic rail on the back truinion so I could affix a folding triangle brace.
I take it to the range quite often and in that short, reliable and accurate package you don't loose a whole lot of velocity from a 12.5" vs a 16.5" I don't drive a truck, but a stick shift car and it folds up nice will use a 20 30 or 40rnd mag with barnual, Vympel or tula 8M3 but no other Tula as tose 8M3 rounds are nasty.
If I used an AR of a similar size compared to my folded Draco in 5.56 it would have alot less power and reliability problems, if you want a short AR best to use .300BLK
The Romanian trigger, you can give it a great trigger job also.
I've never had to use it but when you get out of your car with an AK with wood forgrip and steel mag the iconic look has just made people run lol.
I mean I clean and look after all my firearms but it's nice to know if I could not the chrome lini g would stand up.
On my Draco and WASR I stripped them down and the park is perfect for a layer of KG ak black gun kote.
I did get a bottle of paint from Russia but don't want to waste it. But whatever park the Romanians use when you take apart the weapon and parked pieces then give it a wipe with alcohol it's a perfect surface for spraying then put it in the oven.
I give everything a little debur before a do it.

But my 545x39 has gotten low. And 556 aks are so snappy compared to 545 aks. But the wbp jack 556sr will take any 545 mags. But honestly I put a kns piston in it because it was ejecting casings way further than any of my imported 762x39 aks. I felt like it was beating itself up on the inside. So the kns I put in it to ease that problem. But magazine compatability is very important to me I don't want a firearm that is finicky to alot of mags.

I bought several more new ALG EL triggers and now I am seeing reviews that their hammer is too hard (and shape) causes bolt carrier peening? Same with a g2 trigger. I don’t do much shooting so no problems yet. Do you suggest I not use the new ALGs and remove the g2 from a draco as well as ALGs in Arsenal SAM 7 and Zastava M92 & 85, etc. So that’s a lot of trigger replacements if ALGs are problematic. One swap if just G2. I also read that filing the hammers to a curve solves the problem, but I would be worried to do that right myself. Feedback is appreciated.

Hello Misha, some questions: how do the various currently produced AKM and yugo pattern .223 guns like the WASR-3, M90, and Jack 556SR get away with a 45° gas block? I thought 5.45 experienced bullet shearing and accelerated gas port erosion with a 45° block, so why aren’t these guns in a ballistically similar chambering experiencing these issues? The Polish military was evidently wary of the issue as evidenced by the 90° block on the Beryl. Keep up the great videos!

    • @misha5670

Just because a gas block might be 45 degrees externally, doesn't always mean that the gas port drilled inside is too.

I mean it's nice more are coming in chambered in 5.56 (in Europe the chambering is for 5.56 and .223) many nations will have an ammo limit and most will buy surpluss ammo. I love AKs but 5.56 for me I want at least an 18" barrel and with the barrel profile of the M90 it's great.
I don't think the import ban will go on for that long and the wording was banning weapon exports not sporting firearms (if uncle Sam does not take servias side then ban hammer) I can see in the future if the ammo situation does not improve AKs being chambered in .300blk also as you can get used 5.56/. 223 at the range, can often get scrap lead for free or renman factory's could make it for a lower cost. From a relaoders point .300 is cheap and can be made on a 74 or 5.56 rifle with a new barrel and if 74 with new mag followers(i can't find them anymore but they used to make them and in sure someone could make them) or 5.56 mags.
I know US chambering in AKs is just wrong but it's better than none.
After the 7N6 ban most 5.45 was very underloaded as in 7.62x39 speeds and the bullets themselves I doubt had any yawing or fracturing.
Steel case 7.62x39 will dry up unless something is done.
But since most ammo plants are making nato cartridges for Ukraine and their own forces plus others.
It may be some time or never until we can see new imports of 7.62x39 steel case come back at 30cents a round or less. Or never.
5.45 may become an obsolete cartridge in the US and only be made by 1 or 2 specialist company's for a small fortune.

      @luked2767 ปีที่แล้ว

@@misha5670 I think if 7N6 imports kept up it would have been great as it was crazy cheap, my uncle worked with an importer and it ended up I think 5c a round in a very large quantity. They even made AR barrels and where thinking of making AR mags or lowers that could take 74 mags or polymer mags that would accept 30 rounds, some wanted to make. Bolt action varmit rifles in it apart from the pricy East German bolt action 5.45x39
7N6 is great and I'm happy I have a crazy stockpile of it.
When it was banned the Russian lead core stuff was not very good.
Many people took 7.62x54r for granted when it came in as the cheapest centerfire round that was a good hunting cartridge and I'm happy I stockpiled that for the Finnish mosins and a SMLE I had converted.
Surplus 7.62x25 ammo was great I'm sure it was meant for SMGs I have always loved the tokarev but my uncle he had alot of parts kits mostly Romanian but he got them in bulk back in the day for about 40 dollars.
In his parts bin he found a bolt and trunnion that could not be used to make an AK so made a blowback 7.62x25 one.
It never gets used now due to how pricy that ammo is now.
In the past even with .223 and 9mm most of the time I would shoot Russian steel case.
Never had a problem with 9mm
With ARs if they had a decent chrome lined barrel and upgraded extractor spring no trouble.
Even if they did not a chamber bath every hundred rounds would make it run just fine.
With warming relations with Vietnam and I think no sanctions with Bangladesh.
It's possible we could get Vietnamese AKs and ammo from Vietnam and local made Type 81s and ammo from Bangladesh.
I wish that Pakistan would export 7mm mauser (it's not a prohibited caliber so it's the go to full sized cartridge)
Same with all pistol ammo and .222 .223 and what they call 44 bore and that's 8x33 kurtz but I think with new laws maybe .223 and 8x33 have been banned due to conversions.
7.62x39 could become obsolete or a specialty caliber in the US as the US made stuff is very expensive, not far off .308 and .300 being cheaper.
It's possible Russia could fracture and or for things to calm down but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I always had a feeling they would eventually ban Russian ammo after the saiga ban but especially after the Vepr ban.

But the war ending or power change its possible within time ammo sanctions could be liften but if the war in Ukraine stops and the Balkans is not in a state of war then maybe eastern Europe could produce. The US sells weapons to Vietnam so it could sell ammo. Not sure about Bangladesh. It would be nice if non-ap milk Steelcore ammo for rifles (I know they banned 7N6 but could not import it even if we wanted to) but they wanted to ban green tip 5.56 but the ban was overturned.
It would be nice if a rule was made allowing mild steel core back in for import as just like with those Chinese SKS rifles from Albania since it was in a 2nd nation for so long in sure the armourys of many nations have alot of Chicom and other 7.62x39 with a mild steel core, sure it could be Corrosive but that's why they have chrome lined barrels and cleaning out the primer salts from 7N6 was not a big deal, I always clean a firearm after shooting (suppressed with 7N6 can be a nightmare)
Yes I'm sure the US will continue to produce 7.62x39 but it will be close or the same to .308 prices and hornady was talking about making brass case 5.45x39 but I have not heard much but it can be formed from .222 brass and a 5.56 bullet resized.
But I would not be surprised if we see for example PSA coming out with an AK in .300BLK they can form it with once fired .223 / 5.56 and it does not need a thick jacket due to the speeds.
I have 1 .300 upper with an FN barrel but it has not been shot much.
I only own 2 ARs a 20" Vietnam clone and a 20" with laminate wood furniture.
Technically I own an AR15 lower as in it was an 80 with the T91 markings then a T91 upper from a website (I don't think any or many parts are from the wolf A1 upper)
Yes it does like wolf gold but I'm sure export of that has stopped.
I don't think China even makes 7.62x39 anymore and norinco does not make AKs, most assault rifle exports and aid is norinco made "m4" with Chinese brass case 5.56.
Apart from any steel case I can find for a good price i ordered a few cases of Turkish 7.62x39 last year for a suspiciously low price and it was not lead core lol.
I do hope PSA purchase the machinery to make steel case bimetal at a low cost but I'm almost sure all of It is currently in use.
Sure I can buy some special made decapping pins that will 80% of the time break the berdan anvil on steelcase 7.62x39 cases, I use a large primer and a drop of thinned loctite to keep it snug then use a light cast bullet with the lube grooves removed, a home made gascheck tool I own so I can make them out of empty cans then powder coat them and resize.
As long as I keep the cases for use in only one firearm they can be reused many times, I don't use a tumbler to clean them just give the outside a wipe and spray some Wd40 in the bag.
I can do it with all pistol calibers or anything slower than 7.62x39 if faster I can mess around patching it but it's nor worth it.
I did hear that in Romania that they converted some AKMs to 6.5x39 "grendelski" as in it had the same taper as 7.62x39 but necked down to 6.5 and it just needed a new barrel but they could only use I think 95g or 100g bullets but it's was apparently very accurate and reliable with a good bit more range (less than 6.5 grendel but not much) if they made ammo and barrels available I would be interested.
I do love my 18" 5.56 Zusa M90 and M77 in .308 plus different Sigas and Veprs I have not yet converted in NATO calibers but it would be sad to pay alot for US brass 7.62x39 as a treat.
I got into AKs and building AKs as a teen with my uncle and it used to be so cheap. Still have alot of pre barrel ban parts kits and he purchased alot for at under 50 a kit.
Now it's ironic that you can buy a high quality AR for alot less than a good AK import or even surplus parts kit with parts and non-US CHF CL barrel.
I have plenty of ammo (my uncle hoarded it and he hardly shoots rifles now due to his bad eyesight but I kind of feel guilty shooting ammo I can't replace

I will stick with AR15s for 5.56 nato and import AKs in 7.62x39.

Ak-47 in 7.62 x 39 is always the way to. Buy a different gun, I say, if you want to fire 5.56. Just my opinion.
