OMG the Fish heads song!!! I remember that from my childhood and never knew where it came from, I remember my brother singing it to annoy us all! We grew up in Berkshire with parents from Teeside so definitely not just a Canadian thing!
Apparently it’s a much more worldwide phenomenon than id thought! It’s actually from an American band, but some Canadian DJs I used to listen to definitely thought it was funny to throw it on at odd times of the night! M
Thank you for showing us some beautiful photos and video of York. It was all lovely, I would enjoy visiting that city from what I've seen today. Your views of the city really captured my imagination; the river cruise was wonderful as well. Again, thank you!
Hi Jo Michael, this is a great video thank you Jo for so much information ,some beautiful old boats along the way also some grand Apartments as well ,thank for the ride ,take care keep safe,John 💐🌹🌷📷
I know what you mean about the Sanitary station in York...One evening I had to go and empty our stinky toilet cassette..I had to carry it past a queue of people, all in evening dress waiting for a table in the posh restaurant....The joys of boating.
Thanks for the shots of York. It's one of my favorite cities in England. The Minster, the ruins of the Abbey, Clifford's Tower, the River Walk (and walk, and walk) all have good memories for me.
I can't believe how much information you share on such short Vlogs you Jo must put in so much work. You Guys make things so enjoyable. Both of you must be too young to remember it but I can remember waking up to the news that the York Minster roof was burning and even though I'm such a big old Atheist and don't care about the religious side of the minister, 36 years ago seeing those pictures made me cry like a baby.
Glad you enjoy them! And yes, I’ve no idea how Jo does it, and I watch her doing it! If it’s any consolation, they’ve done an excellent job restoring the Minster, and apparently fire cleanup has actually led to better preservation of some of the stained glass, as well as the organ (although that won’t be back in operation till next year)... rather like a forest fire, there’s new life after the old got burned away! M
Absolutely brilliant Vlog. Thanks for the vid tour of York that brought back so many good memories of past days spent walking the walls and picnics by the river. It is truly a beautiful place. Many Thanks Michael and Jo. Loved it 😀😃
Hello there, nice weather for visiting York, lovely city, awakening our memories?, enjoyable veiwing n Very interesting good camera, stunning scenery, Thank you for sharing your sharing your video.
Of course York is wonderful, you are in God's country! During lockdown when everyone was allowed one hour of exercise a man in Yorkshire was out walking. He saw God walking toward him, he stopped and asked God what he was doing in Yorkshire. God replied "same as everyone else, working from home!" 😂
Its a real shame you never got to visit the British Railway Museum in York, i am not a train geek but it really is something, in recent years i have visited some magnificent museums right across america, the yanks are good at museums and that railway museum in york is up there with them.
Fish Heads was written and recorded by the group Barnes and Barnes which consisted of Robert Haimer and Bill Mumy, known for his roles in Lost in Space, The Twilight Zone, and Lennier in Babylon 5.
Feeling very odd watching you both in the sunshine while Storm Ellen batters the house and howls down the chimney. Must put York on my list. Thanks you for sharing your journey. Hope the storm is not causing you any problems. Take care.
Hah, no, sadly (as I quite miss York Peppermint Patties)... the English city has a long and proud history with chocolate (it’s where both KitKat bars and the Terry’s Chocolate Orange are from), but the Peppermint Pattie originated with the York Cone Company of York, Pennsylvania. So they’re indirectly named after the English city that got its name from the Vikings, but I haven’t seen them for sale here outside of specialty places that deal in American sweets. M
Another great video, York is a great place to visit shame you missed the museums, that’s a good excuse to return. Also looks a little cooler than cooking hot and Smokey Osoyoos ! Cheers, Nigel
Short, but sweet. York is a lovely place, always reminds me of Chester. Pity you're not in Liverpool, a tall ship came into the dock today, the Pelican, based on Darwin's ship. Always good to see the 'old' ships. And I got my new Perseverance mug! Stay safe you three.
It certainly might, however the Ouse at York is quite prone to winter floods, which can arrive very quickly, so I’d take that into consideration before heading up there in the cold! M
Not sure where to put this so I will put it here. We really appreciated your 101's on Viruses and Vlog editing. (We now use the free 'Shotcut' to edit our cruising vids for elderly family to view now too old for the cut.) 101 request. Would you consider a vlog on boat maneuvering please. We get the sense that you almost always go astern into a mooring place and that you seem particularly successful at going astern in general. Any hints and tips would be gratefully received.
You’re absolutely welcome for the videos. The maneuvering video is a nice idea, however I’d feel a bit weird giving advice on reversing astern because your ability to do so well is REALLY dependent on your boat’s design. Ours has a particularly long swim at the stern, a bit of a mark of Liverpool Boats apparently, and the real secret of my ability to reverse so well, as all I really need to consider is the action of prop walk on my course... sadly the vast majority of narrowboats have a blunt stern or even a square stern, with virtually no swim below the waterline, so they’ll waddle all over the place and no tip I can provide would help. That said I’ll talk to Jo about the idea of a maneuvering video, though it would probably mainly end up being a plug for the courses offered by our friends at Willow Wren! M
Wonderful views of York - thanks for taking us around. And another beautiful cruise down to Naburn. Always enjoy your vids! Oh, and your conversations on the stern sound fascinating - although perhaps best not to record them!
It’s not a Canadian song, it’s just something that got air on MuchMusic - the Canuck version of MTV - in the darkest, most twisted nights, and it stuck in my head! M
There is that expression I stopped using after 9/11, "Next time", I never got to the 110:th floor of Twin Towers as I thought 12 Dollars was too much for another 8 floors after having come all the way to the very top of Empire State Building, I first visited NEW York in Novemeber 1999 and came back in February 2004 and then as we all know that sadly Twin Towers was history, with those words said I cross my fingers that you get back to "old" York and get to do River Fosse. I myself have decided to do all when being in a place the first time now not to stand there being baffled.
My general plan as well... in the case of the Fosse, after walking the navigable length, I’m comfortable with missing out if it for some reason becomes permanently blocked. I mean it’s a different way to see the back of a Tesco, but it’s not precisely a top of the world sort of view. M
I haven't been to York for such a long time .... lovely place as a tourist but I was working. I always meant to get back there and soak it in a bit. Fish heads what now?!?
@@MinimalList Thank you so much for the prompt reply, it was a beautiful track. You do choose some good backing music. Thank you for all the Vlogs and the effort you put in. I am a big fan of your channel. You are the British Waterways equivalant of RAN Sailing. Thank you again.
Is that the same place where there once was a grand old Duke of York, who had 10,000 men. He marched them up the hill, then he marched them down again?
According to Wikipedia the song may refer to any of three dukes of York, not one hill in York, and was also sung about Napoleon... it’s a strange one. M
Woot! May not be quit right, doing this from memory, but... "Ask a fish head anything you want to, they won't answer they can't talk! Fish heads, Fish heads, Rolypoly fish heads, fish heads fish heads eat them up YUM!" I'm sure that was from my misspent youth and Dr. Demento. Also, bonus TMBG. Thanks for sharing another video; loved the footage of the sections of city wall. For somewhat obvious reasons, we don't have anything like that in the midwest, so it's amazing to see the parapets, crenelations, and the corner towers just leading down to an active sidewalk. Can't wait until we can make it over again and head up to York. Passports made it here, so if we get a change of administration and some folks who'll support doing meaningful response to and eventual recovery from the Pandemic, maybe we can come sometime in 2021. So overdue already. Stay safe, enjoy the cruising, and hopefully George got some nice running once out of town and somewhere quieter.
@@MinimalList We'd planned to renew our passports in early spring, as they were coming due, then we delayed that a bit in the early days of our lockdowns, but once it became obvious this was not going to be handled in any rational way, we said "Hell with it" and got new pictures, filled out the paperwork, and sent it off, knowing that the passport offices had literally millions of passports backlogged, and of course the USPS is undergoing it's own attack from within, but eventually we got everything (passports, passport cards, and all of our original documents). No one will let us come there (sensibly, sadly, since they can't know if or how careful we're being personally and they have to look at the US numbers and shake their heads and say 'Sorry, but...') but hopefully there'll be some light at the end of this tunnel. Maybe at that point we can come and visit some of the many tunnels there *grin*
All I can say is that it’s good to have those passports in hand... cause right now the only obvious light is still quite possibly a train. Here’s hoping it’s just the end of the tunnel... at least we’ll find out, one way or the other, soon. Just wish it didn’t depend on so many people who don’t seem to grasp that when faced with a choice between two evils you REALLY shouldn’t choose the obviously worse one. M
Yep, apparently he’s played it quite often, though I think I first encountered it on MuchMusic (Canada’s MTV) on a particularly late night binge listen! M
Question: In watching everyone's narrow boat videos I noticed that there are a lot of derelict boats. I know that some of them are "Hermit" boats but does the Canal and River Trust clean the abandoned boats from their canals? I know that it would be expensive to tow and impound a narrow boat but if they impounded them for a month and then sold them for 2000 pounds. Just a thought.
They do remove boats that become an actual impediment to navigation (those that sink, for instance), but there’s quite a lot of complexity in seizing personal property, and a lot of expense in working it through the courts, so it’s really quite rare. M
I've just sent for a couple of wheelbarrow wheels off Ebay,14inch diameter should suffice....Tenner apiece.....Last time we were in York we were moored abreast my mates' boat...P.S. no thumbs down but it's early days yet LOL.
@@MinimalList Thank you for the reply.I forgot to add,I have been enjoying your videos, especially the recent ones on the S&K and around the Yorkshire rivers.
Sadly it’s what happens on high humidity days when the GoPro heats up inside its housing.and the resulting water vapor meets the cold air on the other side of the lens cover, and rapidly condenses. If we notice it we can open the housing and let some moisture out before it gets noticeable, but sometimes we miss it. M
@@Leonard_Smith The mystery deepens.... and disappears. J&M changed the title! No more linguistic speculations, at least for now. Thx for the explanation anyhow.
Probably not. A few years ago there was a sculpture project to put cats all over York. There's one on a rooftop near Ouse Bridge, and another climbing a wall opposite O'Neill's on Low Ousegate.
You should be grateful they stopped at midnight. My experience of York town centre at night at weekends is that it’s not unlike Beirut. At least when there’s not a global plandemic. No that wasn’t a spelling error.
York, good for tourists, no real non-tourism employment anymore, city of large stores, surrounded by 'the burbs' with nothing but hairdressers and charity shops. beautiful place to visit.
@@MinimalList it's changed so much in the years I've been living here, we had 2 off the world's best chocolate and mint factories, gone and what's left of the last one nothing in comparison, we had the carriageworks, gone, we had a huge glass factory, gone, seriously there's nothing left but shops! If you don't work in a shop or in the support services to shops, then there's very little left. Only non shop employments is the likes of being a plumber or an electrician. If you're "health challenged" there's very little opportunity for production work anymore.
Yeah, sadly factory work is kind of gone everywhere, a long, long path towards the inevitable consequence of generations of governments focusing on short term solutions like lowering taxes instead of education spending. Couple that with completely underestimating China and India and the loss of those jobs actually should have looked like a foregone conclusion. That’s why I got into computer programming, it’s the last bastion of not-automatable. Yet. M

It’s Constantinople not Byzantium, why did Constantinople not Byzantium get the works? M
I would have been first,. but I was checking what Goodbyd meant...
Haha! I beat you! 🥇But on to a more important matter.... what does it mean? Please tell us!
@@t.vanoosterhout233 Well it seems to be a Viking salutation meaning to bid a place goodbye, but I can't be sure...
@@Leonard_Smith The mystery deepens.... and disappears. J&M changed the title! No more linguistic speculations, at least for now. Thx for the explanation anyhow.
@@t.vanoosterhout233 Ah well, another etymological mystery consigned to the dustbin of history...
Good fun whilst it lasted though!
Ahh, the typo heard round the (narrowboat) world! M
At 2:00 into the vid, is that a real cat sitting on that narrow ledge?
Probably not. A few years ago there was a sculpture project to put cats all over York. There's one on a rooftop near Ouse Bridge, and another climbing a wall opposite O'Neill's on Low Ousegate.
I can confirm that was a ceramic cat, though it took a few moments of staring at it to be sure. M
Danger Will Robinson... some people will get the connection to fish heads
I’ve just learned it, and my mind is still blown! M
You should be grateful they stopped at midnight. My experience of York town centre at night at weekends is that it’s not unlike Beirut. At least when there’s not a global plandemic. No that wasn’t a spelling error.
It seems wholly unlike Beirut to me... for one thing, it’s not been blown to kingdom come. M
York, good for tourists, no real non-tourism employment anymore, city of large stores, surrounded by 'the burbs' with nothing but hairdressers and charity shops. beautiful place to visit.
I found quite a bit more than just hairdressers and charity shops, but then I did wander a bit off the beaten path! M
Yet. M
@@MinimalList interesting lol I'm sat here coding for the esp8266 to knock up a water/cabin dual thermostat for the van. I want to get into "economy" webdesign to have a basic income
Web design isn’t my area, I’ve always been more interested in the backend than the front end, but there’s a lot of interesting new tools out there. My problem is I get distracted by wanting to learn all the different languages! M
