My dad started working here in 1964, in chemistry, I was only 4 :-) so have seen the place grow, and develop over the years, since 1981, working there my self, so its nice to see how it all started.
Very pleased to see this. I was at York from 1970 (Music & Education, then PGCE). I did wonder if the Music Department had something to do with the video's soundtrack - very much "of its time"!
It takes me back. I arrived at York in 72 by which time it had matured just a little. I stayed in the city on graduating and it is my home. It all seemed like yesterday though but how time flies.
Came across this by accident during a boring 'lockdown' moment. I read Physics and started in 1966 the labs hadn't been finished, so we used part of the chemistry labs adjacent to the giant 'mushroom'. I was in Langwith year 1 (I believe it's been 'transported' to the other side of Heslington now), in digs the other side of the church year 2 and Alcuin year 3. It was fascinating to see the film, I didn't know it existed. I must visit the place again soon, I haven't been for 35 years.
Round about time '17.20' shows the temporary physics lab, I was there!! The chap in the pullover (not me!) Had a 'Unique' (brand name) slide rule just like mine! Happy days!
The place has aged and needs pulling down and rebuilding. The location is great though and it now has a sports village. Has a place in pop history because it was where Paul McCartney first played outside the Beatles. Actually recreated in the film The Linda McCartney story.
Great to see this, really made me appreciate the skill and effort involved in the construction. Lovely shots of central York too - and traffic on Stonegate - much has changed in 50 years!

Still going strong. From some of music emanating from that department I think the young virtuoso studies elsewhere. ..

That happens a lot. Like people who went to the Isle of Wight festival and never went home!

They expanded the technique to make the high rise hell which went up in 60's. Most of it since demolished!
