    Sometimes I wonder if the British understand the charm they posses as they captivate millions around the world. From the US, I can't help to have admiration for the British culture, history, and the people. Hope you guys enjoyed your time.

    I love York! It's where my ancestors came from (Gate Helmsly, and High Catton, Yorkshire, east of York, to be more specific). I visited in 1982 - so I'm long overdue for a visit! It's amazing, but via Facebook, I've reconnected with family living in and around York! We're only five or six generations apart. My 5x-great grandfather's brothers & sisters stayed in England, while my branch of the family left for a new life near Jacksonville, Illinois, in 1825.
    York is just as beautiful and charming as I remember it! I was very impressed by the immensity, the ornateness of the architecture of York Minster. My favorite view was walking the city wall, built in Roman times, looking off towards York Minster. It's just gorgeous! Thank you for the tour - the Shambles, and all! Doing the DNA test -one big surprise was the 25% Scandinavian that showed up, when we have had no one from there -other than the Yorkshire mix. Who knows?

    • @mrbrown2186
      @mrbrown2186 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have a Scandinavian mix in our family via the Vikings who settled York and Scunthorpe, and the other towns and cities throughout the north/north east England and Scotland.

    This was lovely, I thoroughly enjoyed sharing a small view of York! I also share your fear of heights so was a little nervous on Clifford’s Tower 😬. Also, thank you for the beautiful music, so soothing and easy to listen to. I’m hoping there are more videos coming up of your trip to the UK!

  • @JanetWilliams01
    @JanetWilliams01 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Awwww. A lot of love went into this video. Beautiful shots in every scene, well-edited to tell your story, and the music was perfect. (Didn't know you were a composer, Laurence. Well done.) Funny thing is, I felt I could taste that tea, Tarah. I could smell -- everything! They say that smells are very closely related to memories, and the smell of this video was just so -- so rich? and homey to me. Gosh. Guess I have to go back to the UK now. All your fault, you two. You've made me feel nostalgic.

    A really good flavour of York there! It can be a bit touristy and twee, with the usual tourist shops selling genuine Made In China items, but its history, culture and charisma just shine through. At the moment, next to Clifford's Tower is a full size replica of Shakespeare's Globe theatre, which is putting on various Shakespeare plays throughout the summer.

    I'm very fond of York. On my last visit to the UK, a friend let me stay in his guest room there, and showed me around the city. We climbed the Minster, saw one or two other churches, walked along the Roman wall, and explored the many walkways separate from the routes for traffic. They have there own generic name -- what was it? oh right, "snickelways" -- and each have their own name posted. I recall Dame Judi Dench Walk. What a great experience.

    I LOVE the architecture!!! I enjoy beautiful architecture of most any culture, and it doesn't have to be particularly old or fancy for me to admire it's beauty. For example when I saw the Navajo pueblos of New Mexico, I was blown away by their practical and simplistic design. But here in York, the spires, and artistically designed widows and intricate brickwork is just amazing!!!

    I was in York in the early 90s. One of my FAVORITE cities. I went to almost every place you filmed. BUT one of my fav places was a Viking Museum, don't remember its name, that showed how it was to live in a Viking village, including the SMELLS.

    On the memories this brings back! My husband worked there for several years and when I went to visit him the first time (2007), he took me there. We toured the Minster and climbed to the top, rambled down the Shambles and had lunch at a pub. It was the first time I had 'Toad in the Hole'. Yum!!! I bought a White Rose pin and one with the Union Jack and American flags. Hit up a wool shop at the end right before closing. When we visited in 2015 as a married couple, we only had the morning and spent it on the Shambles buying hubby some flags. He flew his Yorkshire White Rose flag on the first for Yorkshire Day. He also bought a pin from one of the market stalls that says "'ow much?" . I would visit every year of I could. I still need to go see Clifford's Tower. :) Glad you guys had a great visit. My hubby and I love York. When we were in the Minster, hubby was able to name all the Kings along that wall. I was suitably impressed.

    After a drunken pub crawl in York back in 1989, a number of work colleagues and I attempted to race up Clifford's Tower mound without using the stairs, resulting in each and everyone of us rolling violently earthward. None of us suffered more than a few bruises, but I got into deep trouble because I lost my pager in the process, (remember pagers?)
    Each and every time since then when visiting York, if I happen to be walking past Clifford's Tower, I feel compelled to scan the grass on the mound to check if it's still there, 'just in case' nobody ever found it.
    (My wife insists that, if I still knew the number, I'd be paging it and listening for its signal - but I wouldn't: I reckon the batteries would have run flat by now!)

    I'd love to go to York having seen the Vikings series. I did spend a month in, actually just England. I was in the USAF and our plane broke down at RAF Upper Heyford base. We were stuck doing nothing so we did the tourism thing. London was first on our list plus we saw several castles around London. We saw probably 90% of the sites in London. Enjoyed the castles a lot. Then we trekked out to Stonehenge. After that we went up to Stafford-on- Avon to see old William's House. I'd love to go back because there are so many more places I'd love to see.

    Having viewed more than my share of your vids (podcasts), I have to say I wouldn't hesitate to someday take a trip to York. Everything about it seemed so fascinating, so Old England both the cathedral (architecture) and early English promenade which looked like it has some truly remarkable shops, even the one Tarah found "underwhelming" but especially caught my eye at least to just browse in the Shambles area. Thanks for all that.
