- In today's video we do a full strip down on my Audi RSQ3s engine, we find even more problems which may lead to this engine being uneconomical to repair, what do you think?

I have the daza version of this. Mine did the same. Your oil pump will be filled with bearing material and will have seized like mine.
My cams were sinilar i had those polished. Cam solenoids will be filled with metal, as will intermediate shaft and vacuum pump which will need replacing along with the crank.
My tappets were seized like yours because they were full of bearing metal.
My head was hit by pistons too byt valves were fine.
Crank will beed replacing dont chance a grind.
Other than that the whole block and head etc took a lot of cleaning to get rid of the bearing metal. The pump distributed it everywhere before its seized.
Youll need a new oil cooler and youll need to fluah the turbo lines. Mine were saturated with metal dust.
Also pull the cam pulley variators open and clean in their. Mine had metal in but were not damaged. Check your chain tensioners too mine were seized with metal.
Just check everywhere the oil can get and wash or replace. Im rebuild mine again on my channel bedroom mechanic if you need a heads up on anything. Also just message me if you need any help or advice mate 👍 i build tune and race these engines.
I would say the crank is bent due to localised overheating, you can see the hot spot on rod journal #4. Great content.
Your tappets are all fine, some still have oil in them and others are bled down. Must bleed all of them down prior to reassembly.
Used to do it with the old Vauxhall OHC engines, put in a vice and squash the oil out.
Had actually forgotten about that until you mentioned it
Is it not the case that the tappets need new o-rings together with pre-oiled c-grommets?
how do you bleed them down?
No they are not, in my experience rebuilding cczb engines, soft lifters are buggered usually because they are starved for oil because the cam bridge oil check valve has failed. it would appear that, based on the journal wear on the cam shaft we have oil delivery problems.
The tappets all have debris from the bearings inside them unless proven otherwise. Doing so will be more expensive than buying new ones.
Looks like a engine that was starved of oil. Check the oil pump or blocked oil ports
This is the 2nd RS3-type engine I've seen on TH-cam, from the UK, where it was munted due to owner neglect and oil starvation. I hate seeing it. Daft owners. Imagine how many times this happens world-wide? Regular oil changes, people!
And more often than 20.000 miles on a performance engine I would say @@boerieza
@@boerieza that's why I say there are 3 types of lemon: Car can be a lemon, THE OWNER can be a lemon and even a mechanic can be a lemon. It car goes shit it is not always the cars fault by itself.
Probably just a loose bolt making the noise
Great video and a relief to not hear endlessly about sponsors like other channels. Keep up the good work! 👍
Agreed, for me the vast majority of channels are becoming unwatchable for this reason
Completely agree, a TH-cam cull out is needed, rather wait for a decent video like Dean does and not waste my time on CarVertical and tyre advert dressed up as content.
100% in agreement with that
In my experience, whenever someone says just pop something on/off, it’s usually a nightmare. 🤣🤣
These modern day engines have such fine tolerances that when number 4 con rod bearing failed it allowed the piston to move upward very slightly and the piston just kissed the head, hence the clean marks on the top of the piston crown.
Take care of you back. Use a hoist or something to help you lift heavier parts.
At a guess I’d say a blocked oil gallery, poor quality oil, or degraded oil in the block, causing oil starvation through the crank, this in turn has cooked the bearing in the Conrod cap causing the rod to push the piston higher. The oil pump will more than likely need replacing as well
Hard to believe it had a service at Audi just before? Did it have a problem prior and they hoped an Audi service would sort?
@@stephengraham6194 if it was ran on crap oil and the oil gallery was blocked or even the oil like piss offering no lubrication. New oil was never going to fix a ticking time bomb
VAG Technic say that the newer audis have lower oil pressure for emissions, they do a tune to get the oil pressure higher. Not sure if this is one of those engines but if it is would be worth doing when built 👍
My thoughts exactly
no, it doesn't apply to this engine
Scotch that idea then 😁
Great video Dean, lot going on inside this engine. Never seen a 5 pot stripped so looking forward to seeing the rebuild. 👍🇬🇧😎
When I was a kid my dad worked at Howard Tenens regrinding crankshafts. I never really knew why. Now I do 😂
Really good to see you back inside a engine i do hope its a rebuild i like to see that rather than a replacement, go on you know you like to do it too
Vosprung fooked😂
Watch your back mate...it would be proper interesting to see ya rebuild it...
If the crank is bent/warped, it only makes sense to have those marks on the edges since it might hit the cylinder head when fully compressed due to the bend
Lot bearing metal has run round that engine, oil pump, cam caps etc going be worn grooved also, and the turbo has been fed oil with metal in it,!!
Gotta love a 5 pot tho, so worth rebuilding this, excited to hopefully see this jigsaw put back together and running 😉
So great to always see you getting into the nitty gritty. But I'm impressed the car wasn't an insurance issue.
Because clearly audi must have either goofed up the oil change or the car run low on oil for that bearing damage to happen?
Rebuilding the engine is good content, but the sensible thing to do is fit a replacement engine. Too much bearing debris has been through the oil pump and the rest of the bearings for my liking. All the oil galleries will need to be super cleaned before you can put it back together and trust it not to blow up in another 5000 miles…good luck either way..
Hmm generally if you see one piston top that clean it is a gasket leak from the cooling system. If your crank is bent it would certainly damage the nearest main bearing.
Quite a few aluminium block engines won't turn freely without everything torqued up and head on. I built a 1.6 ecoboost and that was the same.
When they machine them, they use a torque plate.
Top end starved of oil? Random piston failure at low miles, looks like low oil pressure!
Great video Dean looking forward to seeing you start the rebuild 👌
Love the video, very interesting to see inside the five cylinder engine, you do a brilliant job without much fuss and explain everything, just sold an RS3, fabulous car to drive, so it is an extra interesting video for me.
Great content Looking forward to seeing this rebuilt..After watching many of your vids I'm kind of understanding more about internal engine components and their function thanks to your explanatory guides , I would not have the confidence you have to take on anything like this but i enjoy watching and learning about engines getting put back together.
Always a good time for saving salvage..Hope you got the clock on the wall somewhere (Richie the3d printer)
Oil starvation? Check the oil pump, it might be working but not giving enough pressure
The grooves worn into the shaft are called striations Dean 👍
You will want to have the block completely stripped and cleaned inside all the oil passages since you don't know how much bearing material or other stuff (that might have been the primary cause of the damage) is still in there. Also, you will want new piston rings and a new plateau hone done on the cylinder walls.
Give some mercy to your back buddy you only got one life
Love your Snap-On spacer 😂
For the chain at the box side engines I have made attachment to grab and engine from the side also trying to grab an engine roughly at the weight centre so it’s easier to rotate
Good job buddy just be careful lifting heavy loads
Watched to the end and only bing I can say it’s all oil starvation all over
I’d say bearing material has gone through the pump and then through then engine so would be surprised if the pump doesn’t need replacing also, this is a full machining and rebuild engine job unfortunately so perhaps better off replacing the engine unless you want to keep the car then it’s worth rebuilding it
A more "heavy duty" motor stand should be on the wish list. This could probably be both expensive and interesting, as usual. Following with great interest.
I had the same bearing fail and the same marks on the exhaust camshaft do you keep it?
Great vid, reckon the crank is toast though.
Don’t like a rough old 5 pot though, a Beemer perfectly balanced 6 is the way to go.
Great video Dean this Engine seems to be a pain lots of problems showing
That was a good watch. It would be good to see u rebuild this engine. Good luck
Just a thought, it had just had a oil change prior to selling, I wonder if the oil change showed swarf in the oil and the dealer advised the customer to get rid? Obviously, the new clean oil wouldn't show much as it had hardly been driven?
From my experiance. On rebuild like this if money isn't a problem. NEW: Oil Filter, Oil Cooler, Oil Pump, All Piston rings, Performance bearings, All new gaskets, new complete chain set.
Also give it to someone who will clean it properly because there can be metal shaves in oil supply hoses and for sure your cam selenoids and other stuff will be full of it.
Than use some proper 5w50 oil and change it every 5-8.000km and you will never destroy this engine ever again..
But this engines have a lot of potential so if you want fully build it and you can easily with hybrid get 6xx+ figures on Q3 and you will have hell of a beast in that SUV :)
I know nothing about engines but love the videos keep the video going 😊
You should have enough bits to make one good engine from the two, do that, put it in the RSQ3, get it sold - use the funds/profit to build the skoda.
I think this tells me not to buy an Audi….or anything more complex than a Morris Minor! Super brave work Dean….i would throw the engine away as I could never trust that all the metal debris was truly gone…it will rebuild and run but I would be expecting another disaster every time I drove it! 🥹🥹😰😰😃
I don't. That's it, because you've touched it. But the rings didn't look staggered.
Pickle Dean ? Your in a right old Chunky Chutney bro 😂 , something ain’t right ☹️.
If the engine is uneconomical to repair then u have all the necessary parts to put on the engine in the white Skoda vrs.
Maybe you could do a collaboration with VAG Technic, you could call it Saving VAG?
Well, if piston 4 wasn't broken before...it is now. Are you going to go for forged parts and build the engine? Since you're in there...it could be worth it? Maybe some better exhaust valve springs too?
When you hear about Audi R/RS engines there is trouble coming !Here on TH-cam there has been lot of clips about repairing these engines .Either the owners drive these vehicles to or over the limit or the engines are trash! I would say the first.
Very interesting, look forward to seeing what the crank is like
Forged rods are only £400 and will be balanced and stronger. The problem with a used rod is it won't be balanced to the others
Good content hopefully hear the out come soon 🤞
You shouldn't use a torque wrench to undo bolts. It will damage it.
I would cut my losses with that block and try pick up another engine with a bad head. That's a nightmare.
For my money, that engines gone. The main bearing shell and the cam journals are toast because of oil contamination from the big end shell that went bye bye. The entire engine will be contaminated with bearing remnants, oil pump etc. There's a chance the rod is bent from the piston crown contacting the flame face of the head and there's a chance that the valves on that cylinder are bent too.
Bet that was started with no oil in when it had it's last service
Reckon you should send the block and crank to Barum Engines, possible collaboration?
Deffo oil starvation wonder if Audi used wrong oil type
I don’t think Audi could make a rookie error like that. I would be ruling oil grade out if this. Looks like oil starvation, lack of oil pressure the damage looks like it’s been happening for a while… not just suddenly
@11:22 you can littery see how bend the Crank is when you spin it. If you watch the Main bearing Journals, especially when the Crank rotates "suddenly" more freely
Could be oil ring gone and that’s why piston top is getting cleaned.
It’ll be clean because it’s been slightly touching the cylinder head as it’s been knocking.
Nothing like an engine rebuild lol 😅
Loved this video thanks Dean, keep up the good work!
Use your other rs3 engine for this car and build a mega engine for the skoda
not worth it, it's not a DAZA engine. Even forged they don't get the same results as a DAZA.
Out of interest what would cause such a bearing failure? If it was due to too long oil services by the owner then surely it would have affected more than one bearing with the other 4 showing signs of excessive wear?
Crank got hot.I don’t think it will be useable in the rebuild
We will see what happens
Use the vrs3 engine to repair this rsq3 and get the rsq3 broken engine rebuilt with oveside pistons and upgraded crank and cams etc for the vrs3 ???
You're mad, its too easy to injure yourself. You need a hand when lifting heavy weights
Indeed, thar's how you get a hernia..
Was that concerning? Hehe
It’s ok he’s got plenty of practice with his wallet 😜
I've told him many times, that I'm 20 minutes down the road. I'm always free to lend a hand. I don't need to appear on TV, I don't want paying etc etc.
I did that for years got to 45 my back is knackered my knees knackered my elbows are knackered We all think we’re indestructible at that age.
good job there dean wont you be better off getting another engine from some where
Hi, when are you going to start the track racing Mercedes SL500 M273 Project
Hope All Works Out OK
thats kinda what i feared but didnt want to jinx you. rotten luck though but i know you will sort it one way or the other
The Worlds hardest Jigsaw puzzle 💥🎉🎉
Crank bent ? Needs checking and block will need a line bore if reusing
Would explain the edges of the piston being clean if crank bent
Fingers crossed for you.
Did this engine get rebuilt?, another salvage engine seems a better option,be alot cheaper also,(i couldn't find any updated vlog?)..
How do you remember/ensure reassembly is done correctly on these complex engines?
His memory
Think I’d bin that off and get a replacement engine.
Got to be caused by oil starvation. Price up a new pump as well. If the piston was kissing the head, how will it absorb a head skim. I’d price up a short motor… ICF the crank is off.. scrap it
ran dry of oil or oil starvation, explains all the worn bearings
Would it be safer to replace the oil pump & pipes just in case of debris?
This video gave me a big headache. 🤕 🤣
At this rate a new engine will save you the hassle of dealing with all these minor issues.
Great video Dean
Hi can you help me out I have the same car but can’t get all the the parts to service my rsq3 also do you know what spark plugs are best for this car and oil or can I have a copy of your service list 😂😂😂 euro car parts only have limited things 👍🏾
Germans love to engineer stuff in the most complicated fashion they can think of!
When did the whole "cam chain at the back of the engine" become a thing ? If ever there was a manufactures " we don't want you normals f**king with our engines" idea, cam drives at the rear is the best one yet
I'll put money on the crank being bent if it's hammered shells into the rod
New engine Dean, sort of simple, ish. Nightmare -😮
Great job dean 👍
Possible flood damage ? Looks like the crank is bent also.
Hey, do you have any idea why the engine stopped working? Could it be because of old oil or something in the oil pump?
Hi my friend I am from South Africa, and I was wondering what happened to the T.V.R PLEASE
Good luck with this one . 1000 piece jigsaw.
Cam looks iffy to me. You need to get the whole engine flushed too.
The best thing you can do, is fit the Copart engine into Q3 & forget the Octavia conversion. You will chase your tail forever more with that Octavia.
Great intent thanks. 🇳🇿
Love the video 👍
Its toast for me
Oil starvation for sure
Would be great if you reached out to Barum Engines for the re conditioning of the parts.
I see you didn't have your weetabix before spinning that engine 😅😅
Let's gooo 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cheers Dean
