  • In this BONUS VIDEO we are testing glow plugs that have already been removed from a 2008 Volvo XC90 D5 engine. We use Snap-Ons new digital multi-meter to carry out a resistance test on each plug along with an additional test using a jump pack to light up each glow plug!
These tests can be used when testing any glow plug on a Diesel engine. Take your time, be cautious but most importantly, learn and enjoy. Thanks in advance for watching.

jump pack is 12v right? these glow plugs only take 4.4 so I think if you were to test and measure the resistance there is a good chance you killed it with this 12v test. Only takes 3seconds typicaly

Hi Adam, I am now ready to tackle the glow plugs on my XC 90 thanks to your video, would you have any suggestions regarding a decent OBD ll which connects to a iPhone that’s worth buying? Many thanks G

Hi Geoffrey, so having a little look around I’d recommend visiting Autel website (highly rated diagnostic equipment that seems to offer affordable OBD readers) www.obdprice.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8-jt9q6o-gIVoujtCh1RXAr8EAAYASAAEgJrffD_BwE
OR, MyCARLY obd readers seem to be making an impact on the market and these devices say they connect o iPhone, android etc. www.mycarly.com/blog/uncategorized/carly-obd2-uk/?SHOP-EN&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIksDy5a-o-gIVjt_tCh2FQA-WEAYYASABEgKvsfD_BwE
HOWEVER, I have NOT used either of these tools as I’ve only ever used or invested in snap on diagnostics. Make sure to research before hand but these 2 brands seem to be popular. Hope that helps

I think being able to speak direct to a company via phone, gives more confidence, unfortunately autel And Carly can’t be contacted by phone?

@@geoffreygcotton could t agree more. So many times has a direct conversation lead to a quicker result. Not sure what to suggest further. Other than Snap-On I’m limited with product experience but I’m sure there will be something as a happy medium to what you need.

putting 12v on 4,4v glow plugs is a good way to destroy them

Hi, sorry for the late reply. In hindsight, this is very true. I actually hadn't realised that these glow plugs, or in general are only rated at 4.4V. I admit though, the jump pack is an "old school" approach but if the glow plugs are successfully removed then they should always be replaced. Still fun to do :) Thanks for getting in touch
