Another really great set of races! The 4K picture quality is great. I am glad that you ran against the Vega and the Thunderbird. It still is thrilling running an 8 second car (or a 5 sec car in the 1/8th). It does demonstrate how much of an extreme racing car that you need to beat the Plaid. And of course the rest fo the races show how extreme their race car needs to be to stay up with the Plaid.

Loved that paint job on the Vega. My 71 was white, primer, and rust, and that was in the late 70's in Cali. Can't imagine what it would be in the snow states, probably mostly rust.
Thanks Amar! Hope all is going great with you and your family. Hope you enjoy the newest, one of the most awesome ever! th-cam.com/video/eRNB00wW9Xg/w-d-xo.html
Could be that the battery is starting to show some signs of wear and tear. I'd recommend mostly running in Plaid mode instead of Dragstrip mode for most runs.
Well that exactly why I don’t set it Drag Strip mode “for the whole night” as I’ve seen other drivers do. I wait til the last second, often so late that don’t get it fully warmed up, and then I switch it out promptly after the run (usually before time slip booth)…
Nice runs, once again. Pretty sure I got video of that Yellow Boss 302’s 9 second pass. Hope you can run the Demon again on the high octane tune. Love the Hellcat burnouts! Hopefully run it back with some of them. Love the Pro Tree reminder 🤣
Thanks, we’ll look forward to the twin-turbo “school bus” on your channel soon! Was able to race this black Redeye (Mike’s 920HP) twice more last week! Video coming soon! 🎥
Be interesting to see the acceleration curve from start to finish from all your ¼mile runs to see if there are any oddities that pop out after the various software updates.

i dont know what it is about this damn channel, but im pretty sure its officially my favorite racing channel. came across your videos when u got the plaid and have watched every one since! solid content man. i look forward to it everyday! Btw, the new track mode may have something to do with taking away your top end. did u start losing mph when the update came out??
For me this is getting boring, making time runs take very little skill. Go on a bracket night , enter the no electronics class ,dial the car and see if u can drive the finish line and win some rounds.
@@markbrodsky3671 i can deff see where it can get stagnant and repetitive. its my kind of channel though. i appreciate it though. Pretty straight forward stuff without the theatrics.
Andrew, could it be that the cold air is affecting the MPH ? As you said the dense air is good for supercharged cars but maybe not so good for EVs pushing 150 MPH. Keep up the great videos mate.
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Every battery pack Ive ever built experiences it's highest rate of degradation within the first month of use. After that its an almost inpercievable slow decline going out about a decade.
Cleetus McFarlane borrowed a friends Tesla Plaid. He was running it at the Freedom Factory and was doing very well with the Tesla until the sensors shut down his power when they detected other cars too close on the curves. I commented to him he should’ve contacted you for possible tips on shutting off those sensors (if possible) while racing. The Tesla was crazy quick on the straights though.
I watched speedometer in race with orange demon. You hit 153. Hard to tell where on the track you hit 153mph, maybe after finish line. Love your videos! Thanks!
According to Dragy and the time slip, 153 was a bit after the finish line. I have a habit of not switching to the brakes too quickly, especially to let the car’s suspension “settle” for stability 👍
I was watching your speedometer for your runs and I don't know if this is an optical illusion but to me there is a very noticeable "blip" in the MPH right at around 145mph where it almost "pauses" in relationship to the constant acceleration both before and after 150mph. Might be worth hooking up a scan tool to look at the KW output of the battery during a full run to see if it's pulling power for a split second right at the 1/4 mile to avoid going over 150mph. Conspiracy theory for sure, but being a Tesla owner for 4 years, I have had my fair share of being on the receiving end of a firmware update that impacts performance - intentionally or unintentionally.
I wonder if they're using software to"budget" the power output to get better times while keeping it under 150 because of track rules. May also make the battery last longer?
Awesome video, as always. Re: the 147.x MPH, are there any error codes or other issues that may indicate that the car has a problem after all the racing you’ve done?
Another Excellent episode . Your narrative & peps skills are a hoot. Im hooked and look forward to your next vid. Hope you get your top speed back. Question. Do Teslas have a "idle speed"? When you, parking lot casually , lift off the break and step on the throttle?? Do you have to step on the brake to put it in drive? Thanks. The reason I ask is I'm concerned of muscle memory or conditioning mixed with a bit of panic and hammering on the go pedal. Do you ever carry a mini Gen to charge up? Thanks.
Most Teslas (but not the Plaid) have a setting to choose an option called “Creep Mode” which is like a non-EV with an automatic transmission. The car rolls slowly (a couple MPH) unless the brakes are held. It’s a great imitation of ICE and good for those that prefer that kind of pedal use, like when parking into a garage. (Just modulate the brake pedal only.) But I always preferred “Hold Mode” which holds the car at a stop, even without at brake pedal (critical for launching at a dragstrip when there’s not enough time to stage Cheetah Launch Control). In this mode the accelerator must be used to move forward every time. (No sliding on a hill either.) In all mode (except Launch Control) all Teslas strictly don’t allow two-foot driving; Only one pedal can be touched at a time. If one pedal is even at 1% when the other is pressed, it makes you release both and start over.
To your last question, we haven’t needed a generator before. Not very practical, giving only 1-4% battery charge per HOUR, depending on output. Each run uses 2-3%, so if I get there above 90%, I rarely see any significant slowdown. (Last week, all six runs were 9.3x or better.) And even after 22 races in a night, still about half a battery to get home with!
Just a theori Andrew, but it can have a place in all thinking about lower mph if we will not blaim software only:-) How many miles you have done on your tires? I mean they have worn out for something and this make the whole wheel diameter and whole wheel round smaller and shorter. So, motors are rotating at the same speed, wheels are on the same speed, but doing les mph and more time is needed to cover the same distance. This can be the one of possible causes. You know smaller tire size is helping on acceleration, in your case tire became smaller, but end speed became lower as well. And if you will take cars power into accound, maybe there is even a need to have tires one (smallest) step higher (bigger outer rotational diameter) to have higher end speed. I don't think you will loose in acceleration. Another thing is air pressure. I don't know how often you are checking that one. I know we all have tire pressure monitoring system in our teslas, but it' a colder time right now and tires temperature is not raising as much as during summer, so it could be the same on cold tires, but will not raise enough when tires are warmed up and by this you will have smaller outer diameter as well. If you will take these two things with tires together, they can make sense. This is just a theori as I wrote, but ingineering theori:-) Of course everything can be connected to software, battery, etc, but there is an outside temperature as well and of course tires)))))))) Thanks for video and cheers from "VW expert" (you named me so) from Sweden.
You mention 4K resolution, but I'm still only seeing 1080p through TH-cam. Are you planning on uploading the full 4K version in the future? I have a 83" oled tv ready to watch!
👍 Indeed! The file sizes are huge and the compile times are very long! All our GoPros are 4K, as well as both BlackVue dashcams. That’s where the great resolution starts. Better of course to use higher 4K res in the capture versus 1080, since the editing often involves zooms and “Ken Burns” effects. But so far we’ve only uploaded 1080… 🎥 At some point, perhaps on some of the shorter videos (like the next one with two mind-bending races), we’d like to try a 4K upload 😃
@@TeslaPlaidChannel I would definitely love to see some compilation videos of races in full 4k on TH-cam. I certainly understand why you wouldn't want to try and do the entire video like that though.
I went to Orlando Speed World and liked it. Is there a better track or one that has more cars lined up? I was also looking for your Tesla but guess you were not there that day.
I’m out at Bradenton most Thursdays and Showtime every Wednesday. Plus some special event on weekends like Street Heat and Street Warz. Bradenton has some of the longest lines of cars, especially for weekend events.
Good eye 👁. Yep, it appears to move around but it’s always still wrapped around the mirror when the car comes to rest. In over a thousand passes, it’s never come free from the mirror. (It won’t even reach to come off the end of the mirror housing, there’s not enough cable length)
Really interesting what you were saying about Tesla possibly reducing top end in a recent update. I can’t think of any other reason why the car won’t trap 150+. Meanwhile, Tesla’s website still says 1/4 mile in 9.23 at 155mph. We all know that no stock plaid has ever hit 155 in 1/4. I think 1 or 2 might have with seats removed, light wheels, and a 120lb driver.
@@letsgobrandon5800 .. true and it’s very impressive. However, no stock plaid has hit 155 and it still says 9.23 at 155 on Tesla’s website. There are hundreds of videos of stock plaids doing 1/4 mile and about 151-152 is pretty much the highest trap speed at 100% soc with a regular 200lb driver without removing seats. It’s not really that big of a deal tbh but it’s a little weird that Tesla hasn’t adjusted the 155 considering 155 is not realistic (at least at the present time.)
@@ajbucks Here's the numbers from Maryland with Christine Dodworth driving and only thing out was rear seat. 0-60mph: 1.436 seconds 1/8: 5.816 @ 125mph 1/4: 8.994 @155mph
👍 Even before this Channel was started, there was this same kind of chat. Of course, some drivers are friendlier than others, yet the majority here in Florida enjoy talking about their rides ⚡️🚙💨
The car u call a Vega is a Pontiac Astre which is more rare than Vega next time u should talk to him nice car it is. You kick ass with that car keep up the nice work
For that video, the cameras were all 4K but the upload was 1080. However, our newest video today (far more exciting too!) was uploaded at full 4K 👍 th-cam.com/video/eRNB00wW9Xg/w-d-xo.html
Easy explanation for your lower top speed. What tires are you running? It has everything to do with what you explained to the Porsche Panamera driver about staging at the tree. The deep stage changes everything. Your 9.23 to the 9.45 has a lot to do with the the 148-151. Lower ET, lower MPH, because you’re getting to trap that 2 10ths quicker. Same thing when you were talking with the Black car Hellcat. His 8th mile time and trap, is lower, because of the 1.3 60 foot to your 1.5 60’ if he cut a 1.5 60’ he wouldn’t have beat your 1/8th time. The software may have a little to do with it, but I think some of it is just a numbers game. The software updates should make the cars faster, not slower.
As someone else mentioned below, perhaps your battery is degrading with time? One other factor could be the weather (I'm a meteorologist). I know that air temperatures have been lower in Florida recently. The high in Bradenton was 72 on the 13th with a low of 52 the next morning. That puts temps in the low-mid 60s during the evening. Certainly cooler than when you were hitting 150 mph.
Based on all the data til now, weather is looking like the strongest possibility. If that’s what it is, we’ll know in the spring as things warm up! 👍 Our 2019 Tesla didn’t slow down at all. The 1000th timeslip was a faster MPH than all previous 999 time slips. (I’m not sure everyone realizes how many runs that really is.) ⚡️🚙💨
Though there's a lot of pedal-work involved, I wonder if using launch control benefits the car later down the track? It stiffens up the rear for the launch, but I'm not sure if it continues to stiffen it up down track it didn't at the launch. Maybe makes the car have its nose less in the air as it goes down. :)
It seems to spin more often when Drag Strip mode is fully warmed and I just punch it without Launch Control. It seems that there’s a favorable weight transfer when the suspension is primed for the launch. And of course, Drag Strip mode is about .1-.2 faster than Plaid mode. So if I want to warm it up fully, but not spin the tires, Launch Control definitely helps in my experience ⚡️🚙💨
We frequently run other tires at Showtime Dragstrip since they are "Outlaw"-sanctioned and allow modifications. (See testing of Nitto NT01s in many recent videos.) But when racing at Bradenton, Orlando, and Gainesville, that's correct for the moment. (No mods at all.) Unless of course the NHRA makes that further change (which is widely rumored) to allow "Any 2014 or newer vehicle as long as the stay above 9.0 and below 150MPH". (We talked to the NHRA about this two weeks ago, but it still was NOT an official rule change yet.)
1:10 nope, its not working well. i tried aiming my projector at my tv but its black screen absorbs all of it. it works a lot better on a projection screen.
@@TeslaPlaidChannel maybe throw it in track mode for a 1/4 mile run for giggles. Just tossing out ideas, seems odd you cant make it over 150 anymore, especially on the roll races. I enjoy your channel, thank you!
My P85D originally ran 250 km/h on Autobahn, now no more than 231 and without lifting the pedal it slows down to 214 km/h - its called the motor counter, I guess you can wait for smth. similiar
I'd be a bit upset if I thought the manufacturer was tinkering with my car's tune after I took ownership. Putting my EE hat on, I would think "IF" they adjusted a "max" anything, perhaps they lowered a max amps draw a tad above a certain speed?
Temporarily, for a few weeks or months. Then it is forced. But after examining more data, it may just be weather. And remember, the ETs haven’t suffered (ETs are what count when drag racing). I’d rather be just as quick to the finish line but at a slower MPH anyway…
If you are using the same tyres, the rubber has had more than 20 heat cycles by now so will be losing grip. Secondly as it wears the outside diameter changes and reduces your top speed slightly, this was noticeable (by few kmh) on superbikes I drag raced. Third it could be software to protect batteries during peak discharge? Who knows.
You're right, it's for fun, but it is a lot of fun when a Plaid gets stomped. That doesn't happen very often, but then again, he can't drive that home! 😁👍✌ P.S. I searched Google about the MPH, and all I found was a statement Tesla made the car more dynamic, and more durable with one of the upgrades. ❓
Durability sounds good to us, and the ETs are still high 9.2s to 9.3s, which is virtually unchanged. And since of course it’s the ET that wins a drag race, I’m no overly concerned (yet). Looking back on the 1001 timeslips in our 2019 Model S, colder weather slowed that car down about a tenth. (Other comments reminded us to consider that.) So we could be back to 150MPH in the spring 👍
@@TeslaPlaidChannel Yeah, could be as simple as that. This is totally new tech so it will take awhile to understand all the intricacies. Once those have been worked out we'll probably still be guessing just as with gas! 😁👍✌
👍 Yep, but see also the other more detailed comment below where I add Dragy details over these same several months (plus it’s the same track, although calibration could have indeed changed)
Here it is again! 1101.2 HP peak 1067 HP OVERALL! th-cam.com/video/7letGoD619g/w-d-xo.html Believe that dyno was BEFORE the new TRACK MODE! As OP stated it was at the 1020 SUPPOSED HP MODE!
Andrew, your videos get more informative which each new one posted. Had to watch this one 3 times to make comments. First, the Red Eye that beat you on the pro tree was being pulled in by the Plaid in the last 1000 feet, telling me that his shifting into high gear was enough RPM drop to make you a winner in a virtual identical 0-60 time if it would happen. On the new Hub Dyno video it showed the HP CURVE of the Plaid until computer shut down speed at 163MPH when tested and HP AT 1067! There must be SOME FORMER TESLA ENGINEER out in Calif. that knows how to beat the computer software, and knows how to change gear ratio from 7.56 to a more friendly DRAG RATIO. You would think after all this time a company like Unplugged Performance would know how to do it (BUT here again I'm pretty sure they are working with Tesla's approval on different things, and hacking a Plaids computer would be a BIG NO NO if they want to continue racing the Plaid and winning Pikes Peak Hillclimb again!) Perhaps Anderson Dick in Brazil, of FUEL TECH fame may take up the fight, after all he was very impressed with his Plaid when he bought it, and figured out how to make a quarter mile pass at over 150MPH with NO DRIVER, and have the car turn around and go back to the starting line! Have to mention the Lucid Airs tires again that significantly cut down rolling resistance because of tire compound. As to cutting top quarter mile speed, I have reviewed at least a dozen TH-cam videos of guys doing a 0-174+ run. Each video shows the Plaids speedometer SLIGHTLY slowing down as it hits anywhere between 130- 140MPH. It is noticeable once you realize what is going on, and to look for. So I posit that the new TRACK MODE has cut some power out of the Plaids motors at those speeds. One other thing, the car that beat you going 8.57 at 157MPH would probably lose to the Rimac Nevera or the Bugatti Battista as both use the Rimac motors and chassis and the Rimac has gone an 8.58et on a airfield. Non prepped track but at 168MPH!....Keep those videos coming!
Race number was 1000 was faster than all previous 999 runs (as shown in that video). This week: ran within 0.02 of the fastest time ever run. What degradation?
@@TeslaPlaidChannel yea but I doubt software updates have anything to do with this. Tesla wouldnt care one bit about what the NHRA thinks and I doubt the regulations would have any influence on the car not being able to reach 150
Glad your wife gave you a card to use for a pro tree reminder. I would suggest a golfers approach. Don’t try to narrate through your backswing! Most sports demand focus. Drag racing is no different.
Something I've noticed is pretty much 90% of the time you say, oh I can't get into dragstrip mode, 2 more minutes, 5 more minutes, 3 more minutes . That seems to be very inconsistent . Does that possibly have anything to do with the mph ? For consistency shouldn't you always be in dragstrip mode so then you can make accurate comparisons instead of hit and miss ? ✌️ keep up the good work 😃
Drag Strip mode uses more power. Especially when it's cold, as it heats up the batteries. He can get mid-9s in the regular Plaid mode, so that is the mode that he stays in most of the time. At the drag strip there is a LOT of idle time when you are sitting in line, and you don't want to use your battery up just sitting. Plus even when he has short notice of being up for a run, he can turn on Drag Strip mode, and even if it doesn't fully get to the optimal temp in time, it still improves the acceleration over Plaid mode.
@@deanmcmanis9398 The question was not directed to you.......🤔 everything you said I already know. And I really don't want to waste time explaining the fact that I'm NOT talking to you.
@@nobombs8784 Dean was one of the first few dozen subscribers here and has watched over two hundred of our videos. His reply was exactly correct, we couldn’t have said it any better. Only one thing to add: Viewers speculate that the trap speed slowdown (>150 down to ~147) is due to “always running Drag Strop Mode”. Nope, not us. We often don’t use it when the competitor is not expected to be close, and we don’t even turn it on until the last moment before the race. (Intentionally) Better to have it still show “2 minutes remaining” during the race instead of leaving it on for hours like other Plaid owners are doing (we’ve seen them personally) 😳 Yet we’ve had enough fully warmed up races this month to clearly see that the trap speed has lowered…

Andrew, could it be that the cold air is affecting the MPH ? As you said the dense air is good for supercharged cars but maybe not so good for EVs pushing 150 MPH. Keep up the great videos mate.
That possible, although the Model S is supposed to have one of the best drag coefficients. We will monitor over the next few months…

@@TeslaPlaidChannel what was your SOC?
Cleetus McFarlane borrowed a friends Tesla Plaid. He was running it at the Freedom Factory and was doing very well with the Tesla until the sensors shut down his power when they detected other cars too close on the curves. I commented to him he should’ve contacted you for possible tips on shutting off those sensors (if possible) while racing. The Tesla was crazy quick on the straights though.
Cleetus was running a lower battery charge if I recall correctly. 90% charge and he could have broke a few more hearts. Lol
Plaid out there exorcising demons 👿
Love seeing stock unmodified cars going head to head.
There should be a pro marked light above the tree to avoid errors like this
I would certainly like to see that. But until then, my wife's solution (at end of video) should do the trick!
loving the pro tree placard
I wonder if they're using software to"budget" the power output to get better times while keeping it under 150 because of track rules. May also make the battery last longer?
🤔 Quite plausible 👍
(Just modulate the brake pedal only.)
But I always preferred “Hold Mode” which holds the car at a stop, even without at brake pedal (critical for launching at a dragstrip when there’s not enough time to stage Cheetah Launch Control). In this mode the accelerator must be used to move forward every time. (No sliding on a hill either.)
In all mode (except Launch Control) all Teslas strictly don’t allow two-foot driving; Only one pedal can be touched at a time.
(Last week, all six runs were 9.3x or better.)
And even after 22 races in a night, still about half a battery to get home with!
Just a theori Andrew, but it can have a place in all thinking about lower mph if we will not blaim software only:-)
How many miles you have done on your tires?
This is just a theori as I wrote, but ingineering theori:-)
Of course everything can be connected to software, battery, etc, but there is an outside temperature as well and of course tires))))))))

@@letsgobrandon5800 .. true and it’s very impressive. However, no stock plaid has hit 155 and it still says 9.23 at 155 on Tesla’s website.
Great videos

As someone else mentioned below, perhaps your battery is degrading with time? One other factor could be the weather (I'm a meteorologist). I know that air temperatures have been lower in Florida recently. The high in Bradenton was 72 on the 13th with a low of 52 the next morning. That puts temps in the low-mid 60s during the evening. Certainly cooler than when you were hitting 150 mph.
Based on all the data til now, weather is looking like the strongest possibility. If that’s what it is, we’ll know in the spring as things warm up! 👍
Our 2019 Tesla didn’t slow down at all.

@@TeslaPlaidChannel what about trying normal ride height with soft ride suspension setting? Gotta get that weight transfer!
so does this rule change mean you wont pursue further mods to the plaid, strip out /wheels tyres. ect ?
We frequently run other tires at Showtime Dragstrip since they are "Outlaw"-sanctioned and allow modifications. (See testing of Nitto NT01s in many recent videos.) But when racing at Bradenton, Orlando, and Gainesville, that's correct for the moment. (No mods at all.) Unless of course the NHRA makes that further change (which is widely rumored) to allow "Any 2014 or newer vehicle as long as the stay above 9.0 and below 150MPH". (We talked to the NHRA about this two weeks ago, but it still was NOT an official rule change yet.)

I'd be a bit upset if I thought the manufacturer was tinkering with my car's tune after I took ownership. Putting my EE hat on, I would think "IF" they adjusted a "max" anything, perhaps they lowered a max amps draw a tad above a certain speed?
Can you block updates on your Tesla?
Temporarily, for a few weeks or months. Then it is forced.
But after examining more data, it may just be weather.
And remember, the ETs haven’t suffered (ETs are what count when drag racing). I’d rather be just as quick to the finish line but at a slower MPH anyway…
Lordie that T-bird.
What happens when they start making electric drag cars ?
Actually, Don Garlits (the Big Daddy of Drag Racing, look him up) has been racing Electric Dragsters for years now…
If you are using the same tyres, the rubber has had more than 20 heat cycles by now so will be losing grip.

Here it is again! 1101.2 HP peak 1067 HP OVERALL!
th-cam.com/video/7letGoD619g/w-d-xo.html
Believe that dyno was BEFORE the new TRACK MODE!

Can you find out from Tesla about the software update?
You keep saying you didn’t know you just didn’t remember lol
Yep, for the reasons explained. Even drag racing requires focus, and "talking through the backswing" is not recommended...

I believe you got a update that wont allow you to go over a certain speed and why i would never own a tesla!! How are you going to spend 100k for a car that you dont have full control of???
That NEVER happened. We’ve had 6 (yes SIX) Teslas and there has NEVER been a software update that reduced the performance or top speed in any way. Updates have only *increased* the performance. So whoever told you that (probably BIG OIL) was completely full of 💩
If you believe crap like that, you need to look in the mirror and say “I’m completely gullible and am ready for my RE-programming”
what the bleep is flat out
“Flat Out” = “No longer restricted by the old NHRA rules that say we can’t run faster than 9.9 seconds”, where we had to lift at half track and sandbag.
(But the latter doesn’t fit in the YT Description box)
