I know its not exactly a hot take, but I love marshally tones, and I always find myself coming back to it even for low tuned stuff. In a world where it feels like most modern metal is using evh/mesa/engl/etc, a low tuned marshall sound is almost a rarity.
It absolutely is fair to say that lol, also, those Marshall’s are kick ass. I’m a fan of solid state, tube is far from the best tech out there for amps. Solid state is by far 100% times more reliable. Tone wise….it’s really not that important. Change your speakers if you want different tones.
@@mattlombardi54 yassir I'm noticing that u need a power source if your running tube amps = more $$$, I'm not a gigger but if I was I'm noticing my tone can be crap about every 3rd day probably due to variations in power coming out from the wall to my tube amp
The new DSLHR's and CR's are the latest from Marshall, (other than the studio and origins) they are awsome amps and underpriced by $1,000 so people should pick them up while they are only $950
Nothing beats a hot Marshall head for killer metal tones. I especially loved the "Metal Active" tones with the LTD Phoenix and the 7 string baritone mix. Great demo as always Jon. Keep up the fantastic work!
I just scored one of these from Sam Ash for 650 and it came in today. Easily one of the best amps you can purchase below 1000 dollars. Don't hesitate on them
The best part about your channel is you always get great results. Great riffs and tones my friend! Also helps that because you do such a stellar job, your followers get a good dose of confirmation bias! 😊 Cheers dude!
This amp is extremely underrated for metal, sludge, and doom. It has a shit ton of low end punch just like the dual rec. Tri-Crow studios did a back to back with it and it's really hard to tell the difference IMO. The only reason I sold mine was because I got a JVM instead but there are things the DSL can do, IMO, the JVM can't or I've not figure out how to dial it in yet.
The DSL amps sound great imo and are pretty slept on. Running it into a decent impulse response through a two notes or something will get you really solid raw results straight out of the gate. The classic gain channel takes pedals really nicely too and still retains a lot of the character of the amp. I have the 20w version and it's absolutely ideal for home recording straight into a capture device.
I've had mine since the 2nd month they were available. My favorite amp by far. I put a choke in mine about a year ago and I added it with a switch to select choke or stock resistor but I normally have the choke selected. It feels fuller with the choke as youd expect. But if I'm really pushing the power section and trying to get some good sag I use the switch to go back to the resistor. Its an incredibly versatile amp that i cant recommend enough. There are some nitpicks i have about pcb design choices that could effect its life but they are easily fixed to avoid any issues diwn the road. And tone wise i have zero complaints. I also added the bright cap they removed on this version on a switch for the ultra channel. So now it can be stock which is warmer than the 100H or it can be like the 100H which is a hairier brighter more classic marshall sounding lead tone or set to be right in-between the two. It takes pedals great and dispite what ill informed people say it sounds fantastic at low volumes. Sometimes at night when my wife is already in bed if i dont want to swap over my cabs and pedals to the Fender Champ clone i built or to one of my solid state amps i just use the Marshall on low volume and its so quiet she cant hear in our room but it still sounds good and reacts just aa it would at a higher volume. Now its always going to sound best once you turn it up enough to get all that natural tube compression etc. but turned down low its absolutely good enough for practice or low volume recording.
Usually to me (inexpensive) Marshalls always seemed to me to be a bit fizzy on the top end, when driven....you did a good job not making it too fizzy here!
Nothing sounds as good as a Gibson played thru a Marshall. That Les Paul played thru the HR 100 sounds heavenly, can't even imagine a combination that would sound better.🙂
Awesome sounds! From pristine cleans, to punchy crunch & rock saturation, not to mention it seems to work pretty damn well with baritones and 7-8 string guitars! From top to bottom it does everything in a very convincing way! I've got its little brother, the DSL20HR since last year and I love it! Great tone, very versatile and the EL34s along with the Resonance control give more depth and thump to the distortion. I'm pretty surprised by the clean sounds in this demo, really sparkly and pleasant...I'll have to check 'em out a bit more on mine! As always great content!
@@MetalZoned well, luckily dude they are pretty easy to find nowadays hahahah! I'm really happy with mine, sounds great and very thick for just 20 watts...I mean, big amps are cool but if you don't have the space, lunchbox amps are a great option.
I had to come back to hear what my amp sounds like. Mine is now in the shop being fixed. Some channel switching issue going from green channel OD1 back to clean Green Channel is remains in distortion mode? A little over Two weeks now and I am going crazy not having it here. I know why I miss it now. It just rocks your balls off. Great playing man!
Such an under rated great amp series. I love that your making vids of this type of gear so it arms youngsters with info for options for starter rigs. My buddy had a 112 DSL that I would play Weezer Blue album covers on.
Underrated amp for metal imo. It and the Silver Jubilee are great and not a lot of people in metal use them so there's an open opportunity to sound kind of unique
how did you make the green ultra gain channel sound tight and bright? I have a DSL40CR (same preamp but with less watt) but it always sounds dark even when I have the Presence and Treble on full.
Man, your demos are consistently the best on TH-cam. I have this head and have to sell it. Girlfriend and I don’t have the space to keep it with the 4x12 cab. I HATE that it has to go 😢

I don’t know if you have done it but I’d love to see a detailed review between the dsl20 and the 100. The 100 has too much more power for me but some better toner versatility from what I can tell.
I got one of these from sweetwater last Monday. I was pretty excited as i haven't had a marshall type amp in a while. Long story short, i hate it. I'm running it through my evh 2x12 with heritage g12h30s. I can't dial in a percussive and mean 80s type metal tone no matter what i do. Boosing with a sd1 and maxon od808 hasn't helped either. Looks like it's going back soon for a refund
I own a DSL50 with some mercury magnet upgrades that has been on marktplaats actually a couple of times, but i keep taking it off because it sound so killer and I want to keep it, although I never use it. (It's in storage now and both with my band and at home I use moddeling)
I just bought a used one and anytime I reach a decent gain point for metal, it gets a lot of muffle and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong lol. Any ideas?
These amps need LOTS of room to open up and sound Clear!.....like Past Half volume....mine sounds a bit muddy until I crank it loud, it's just the way Marshalls are, very high revving animals. Also, don't stand in front of the Cab, stand way off to the side and see if the sound changes. There's a ton of weird sound dynamics that go on with Half Stack systems....get a wireless unit and go stand Outside or really far away, crank it up like 3/4 volume, see how it sounds.....Marshalls are a totally different animals when they hit proper volume....also Understand which Cab you're running, can it handle 100watts? Try switching to 50watt.....
The HR es the New version, the bare H is the old one, supposedly, the newer version is tweeked better, specially tye OD2 channel. I can't give a personal opinion since I don't have either.
