I believe that the multiple small berries is called shotberries and may be a developmental issue following poor conditions at the time of flower fertilisation. We had a very poor spring this year (2023) just at pollination time and the fruit setting was compromised by the cool damp conditions. I have a tree with thousands of 3-4mm berries and one proper fruit! I also understand that it may, going forward, exacerbate the phenomenon where the tree alternates between heavy and light cropping which is a natural feature of the species. I am going to try striking a few cuttings this year for fun.
Lovely trees. For my trees is use 1 part perlite, 1 part molar clay and 1 compost, John innes no 3, or multi purpose compost with added John innes. What substrate do you use? I can see you're trees are outside in the elements too. I hope you answer! Thankyou 🙏
I have a little olea European olive tree it's about 3 years old and has little buds .could you please give me some care tips for this verity .thank you
I'm growing an olive tree from a cutting, how do you create the corkscrew. can you apply the same principle to another tree such as a bay tree or box tree
How do I get my olive tree leaves to grow thicker and thinner? In the past year many new leaves come out at the same time but they are often much larger than the older leaves, much brighter green and not as thick. I see these small potted olive trees and their new leaves look very much like the older ones. Not mine.
Got an olive tree but no progress over 3 yeara, i have put it in direct sun in south facing but the fruit never grows, no new leavea or branches. Should i feed it, if so with what? Many thanks
Pruning is essential if you want your Olive tree to bear fruit. Feeding is very important. Tomato feed is good as it has a high content of seaweed. See our website for more caring information.
I hope you don’t mind me asking for olive tree advice. I have just moved into a house with olive trees in 4 different situations! I would love to make the best of them somehow. 2 standard in pots look about 3-4 yrs old A 5ft wonky ex? standard in the ground growing at 45degrees , looks like a pot to ground transfer. A very thick trunked 6ft uneven wild olive tree in a 400litre-ish container that only grows on one side due to being up against a fence. I imagine it cost quite a bit, looks like a mature-ish trunk it grows in sprouts. But has hardly any growth on it at all. Looks Like it’s been abandoned for a long time and I guess not enough water year after year. How could I get these into the ground? How much root can I remove? And lastly 2 tall skinny olive trees in the ground that have grown 1-3 ft in height in a year. These is in the shade but too big to move. Are there some simple do’s and don’t I could apply across the board? I am considering putting the smaller ones in the ground at the very sunny end of the garden. Don’t worry if it’s too much to answer to! Or if you know a good source for advice? Thank you. X
A good rule of thumb is a generous prune every year, usually early spring. This will stop them getting ‘leggy’ They will thank you for it by producing new healthy growth. And for trees in pots . Give them a feed also from spring and throughout the year. More info on our website
Hi, my tree also has peacock spot. There's no cure for it but it can be managed. I was recommended vitax copper mixture to spray onto the leaves, I've also used a fungicide. I heavily pruned the tree and took out a lot of the infected leaves and it has recovered well with lots of new growth but you will always get the leaves with spots on them. Make sure you clean up any leaf fall and I feed my olive tree with liquid seaweed to keep it as healthy as possible. Hope this helps.
Ive just bought an 80 year old olive tree. I’ve reposted it, should I wait till next spring to trim. It’s a bit leggy and want to make it more compact ball. Any help much appreciated xx
May for the olive is a difficult month. They’ve worked hard all winter and now as other trees burst into life the Olive needs a pick-me-up prune. Take back upto a 1/3 (it won’t flower and produce fruit without an annual prune) Also good practice is a ‘quick fix’ feed such as tomato feed or liquid seaweed- Once a fornight now till October. Don’t worry you will lose some leaves in May as new growth emerges.
I bought an olive tree last year January but now it’s all dry and I would like to bring it back to life…can you please advice on useful tips. Ps: we keep it in door
If it is dry then give it a good soak. Lots of water to revitalise the tree. If you keep a tree indoors then it will need regular watering just like a houseplant. Once you’ve soaked it. Give it a feed with tomatoe feed.
I live in Chicago and have an olive tree that is about 4 years old. It suffers a lot during the winter because I have to keep it indoors during the winter. What is the coldest temps that an olive tree can handle as I would love to transplant it outdoors? Love your program.
I live in Spain and me and my family have olive trees and we reach sometimes(no very often ) until -8 °C and they are perfect although I guess if trees are young can survive in these temperatures.Good luck with your tree😊

I bought one and i love it! I was a bit worried about the sun and all. But now i feel confident that my tree will be beautiful
Strange isn’t it? At first glance not a showy species and yet I absolutely love mine.
Beautiful olive trees you got❤👌
the cloud pruned olive is stunning.
Lovely, simple and informative.
Such an aesthetically pleasing bush!
We still talking about Trees? lol
Very nice collection. If I went to the uk this would be one of the number one spots I would want to see.

Trunks thicken with age. The Olive is pretty slow growing.
How long can they stay in pots? I have 3. . But one of them is huge & in a huge pot - there's no way I could ever repot it !
Plant in the garden ,in winter cover it with fleece

I have a small olive tree in a pot in UK but the leaves have brown spots now after the winter months. What should I do? ???please help! !!
Hi Asif,
This sounds like peacock spot. Give it a spray with copper sulphate spray available from most hardware stores or garden centres.
The Norfolk Olive tree company thank you

We use John Innes no 3 but any good quality compost will do.
If someone wanted to farm olives/oil in the uk would it be viable?
certainly possible to produces olives for the table perhaps not olive oil though. The Arbequina variety would be ideal
