I thought CKD patients had to avoid animal protein, phosphorous & potassium & fats. This doesn't seem to be right at all.

There is some evidence suggesting that plant-based proteins may be more kidney friendly, but we must also consider meeting protein requirements to prevent muscle wasting for people with kidney disease. A mix of both animal and plant based proteins can be part of a healthy, kidney-friendly diet.. Healthy fats are an essential macronutrient for most patients with kidney disease. Higher phosphorus and potassium foods may be more restricted in the diet depending on bloodwork, so it is important to receive individualized dietary recommendations!

Real like this video, I just have a quick question. I thought that salmon was bad because it is really high in potassium. Not sure if that is correct. Is there any fish that is not high in potassium and high in phosphorus. Would really appreciate some feed back. Thank you.

Most unprocessed proteins like meat, fish, eggs, beans, and dairy contain both potassium and phosphorus. While it is true that salmon is a source of phosphorus and potassium, it contains other nutrients that are beneficial in appropriate amounts, including healthy fats like omega-3’s and protein. Incorporating fish as a protein source can be a kidney friendly food choice. Phosphorus and potassium food additives in processed foods are what you may want to reduce or avoid, to manage your bloodwork. Talk to your dietitian to get more individualized feedback about food choices surrounding protein, phosphorus, and potassium!

Chicken can be a good protein source on a kidney-friendly diet, but the amount matters. While it is true that CKD patients generally have low to moderate protein requirements, it is important to consult with your dietitian for your individualized needs.

Ckd3 patients can hve up to 4ozs or palm size of protein. Red meat only twice a week. Only 1/2pt milk daily.
