Esox Diaries S2 Ep:2 | PIKE FISHING from the Bank and Boat | ESOX LUCIUS | The Lake of Menteith

  • 'The Hunt for a Leviathan'... What exactly is a Leviathan?
    In season one of 'Esox Diaries', we defined a Leviathan, in terms of our goal, as a fish of 25lbs plus, and although in the end, we did manage a lovely fish that did exceed this weight, only one constituent of Angling 360 managed to breach this benchmark.
    The aim of Esox Diaries, season 2 is to balance the books, and what better place to give us our best possible chance to do so, than the Pike mecca that produced last season's 26lbs leviathan. The mighty Lake of Menteith.
    It's a privileged access deadbait day, courtesy of the Pike Anglers Alliance of Scotland. If anywhere is going to produce that BIG fish, it's this place.
    En route we have a quick look at some of the essentials of Pike fishing, and aspects that those looking to get in to this ever-growing branch of angling need to consider before hitting the bank.

    The negativity on the internet has pervaded every walk of life... every hobby, every demo vid, even the most wholesome channels... I believe its because it is soo easy to leave aggressive and rude comments BECAUSE the net is anonymous ( & should remain so) ... none of these people would talk face to face like that... because back in the day, you might have gotten a well-deserved fat lip... I like your content, particularly pike fishing...
    Keep doing what you do, ignore the haters, the rest of us "normal" people are here to enjoy your channel.... in other words ...save your breath , mate !!

    Only 5 mins into the video so far and I'm loving it. Great message. Education is the way forward for pike angling. 100%. I always try to do this when I meet anglers that are new to pike fishing. Unfortunately its the ones that have been doing things incorrectly for years that are hard to convince to change their ways. I was asked to do a talk years ago on the basics of pike fishing and one guy ( that had pike fished for 20 years!) told me that there's no need for a stop knot on a float ledger setup. 🙈🙈🙈 Spent a good 10 mins trying to explain my reasoning, but he just shook his head and told me I was wrong. 🤷‍♂️ Can't teach stupid I suppose. 😂
    Keep up the good work lads, love your work. 👏👏👏

    • @scottkelly4020
      @scottkelly4020 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      p.s. Alex, move your reel further back so that the drop off indicators clip is directly under the spool and it should drop back easier. 👍 It just increases the angle in the clip and let's it move easier. 👍
      (Those egg shaped balls on that specific clip were quite prone to "pinching", I changed mine out for solar adjusta-ball line clips)
      Not a criticism by the way, just passing on my past experiences. 😉

    Good ethics and sentiments lads, and ones that too many don't stick to, keep banging that drum! Pike can be big powerful beasts, but they are very fragile and need to be handled with great care. On test curves, I always preferred 2.5lb TC. It's very forgiving when fish lunge, but still capable of a decent cast once you develop the tecnique and use the power absorbed by the rod to act as a spring to fire the bait out. You're also less likely to rip the hooks out of a pike's mouth, or even cast off a bait. Max points for the the photography and banter but nil points in the fashion stakes for the shorts Big G! 😉

    Great stuff. I have one of those bait cooler bags. It might be a bit overkill but I put two of those blue freezer blocks in the bag.
    They are just big enough to fit the bag (I had them already). I put one in the bottom of the bag and one on top of the baits.
    Never have to worry about the baits defrosting during the day.

  • @MrNomyar
    @MrNomyar 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Why is the bankstick behind the reel positioned at a 45 degree angle??
    Curious to understand/learn why you do this??
    I fish with dead baits since ~1996. Always used light weight hangers and running lead. If possible freelining with aluminum foil indicators. I started with drop back swingers ~5 yrs ago, but somehow always felt back to my hangers. Now trying dropback swingers again, because pike are starting to get wary and very careful in NL too.
    In UK the techniques are more advanced with regards to finesse.
    Nice video of clearly very seasoned fishermen! Tight lines, kind regards - Raymon from The Netherlands.

    • @angling360
      @angling360  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Think it's more a preference, over the years I've slowly copied Alex as he has always did his rear bank stick this way, and I liked how it looked. Don't think there's any real technical reason behind it, I may be mistaken. Alex might be able to answer better for you.

    • @MrNomyar
      @MrNomyar 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@angling360 thanks for your quick reply! Looking at your setups in the other videos, I think the angle makes it easier to position the line clip close to the spool of the reel.
      Also good to see your technique for the strike too. You wind down fast for contact, and then strike. I will try this too, as I've seen relatively many losses when striking at distance. Maybe this is due to excess slack line, hence less effective strike. Often when I encountered a loss, I noticed that I retrieved the bait. My conclusion was that the hooks were still in the bait, instead of in the jaw of the pike. If only a tip of the hook is in the jaw, the weight of the bait help the pike shake out the (bait+hooks). I've experimented with attaching fish with elastic bands, but limited experience with this too date. We're on a journey.....

    • @alexallanangling
      @alexallanangling 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's exactly it @@MrNomyar. The angle allows the line clip to sit directly under the reel with the butt of the rod not extending too far beyond the top of the back bank stick. Also, to get the indicator attached to the (these particular) bank sticks in the correct position (below the reel), the sticks need to be extended quite a bit. If the stick was straight up and down the height difference between the two sticks would be too much, as I like to keep the rod tip close to the water.

    Fabulous education value from you guys thanks. As a beginner can I ask the length of the hire road used and the boat rod. Also what size reels etc assume one is bait cast and one spinner cheers 👍

    • @angling360
      @angling360  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Cheers mate......the bank rods we use differ. Alex uses 12ft rods, and I have 2 11ft rods and one 12ft. The 11ft rods are the ones I use deadbaiting from the boat. My reels are fixed spools, size is 5000 (I think). The spinning gear, I was using a 7ft rod with a Penn Battle 2 reel, and the bait caster set up was 7ft also. Alex was using a 10ft lure rod and 4000 spinning reel. I hope this helps you out.
