    For a passphrase I use diceware manually with a downloaded into a hardcopy diceware dictionary. Rolling 5 die with a possible 6^5 or 7,776 combinations for each word. If you have 5 words then there are 7,776^5 possibilities, or 6 or 7 more words. However many you can memorise. In addition I use diceware to choose a special character. 4 die for this part. The first 2 to determine which character from a 6 rows and 6 columns table, the third to determine the word in the passphrase and the 4th to determine the letter to be substituted. Of course if you would like more special characters you can roll 4 die again for as many special characters as you want. I use casino rated, evenly weight die of 5 different colours, 1 for each 1-6 dice result in order, but this might be overkill. Normal die will suffice.

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can relate. Always add special characters manually for some additional entropy. Might not make a difference, but what if? There's no such thing as overkill in passwords. Who knows what type of performance will come from computers in the future? What might take days or years now could perhaps be solved in mere seconds in the future.

    Great video! But I don't understand why you would need the portable version of KeePass for this... I used the Windows installer, then copied the directory to my cloud storage. Then, I pointed my local installations to the database in the cloud, with the Key file only stored locally on my devices. It seems to work fine... is there something wrong with doing it this way? Thanks

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You can totally do it, although the installed version will leave some additional stuff in your registry that could be unwanted. A portable version will work without any installation and create no additional links in your system. That's the only difference. Both will work the same way in this case. Hope that clarifies it!

    Hi there: after you copy the entire Keepass Portable with your db, how do invoke the database? or do you run the executible. Thks

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure if I understand the question correctly. Depends on whether you try to access the KeePass database on a mobile phone or another computer. If it's another Windows machine, you can use the same KeePass executable. The settings will be identical. You won't be able to run .exe files on Android or iOS though. In that case, you will need separate KeePass apps, namely KeePass2Android and KeePassium - just to give you 2 examples here. I have videos on how to set everything up for these devices, so check my channel if you're interested. :)

      Yes, that would totally work but would require some additional steps that I would have to do my research on as well as I don't own a Synology NAS. You could try asking ChatGPT. I've been very busy with work lately and AI has helped me drastically with many questions I had.

    Never knew I could do this.
    I was wondering is there a way to connect to cloud directly from a chrome extenstion, without having to sync the portable version to system.
    Use case : I am in a public / office computer, I dont want to sync or copy database into my office pc or public pc.

    Wait, If you copy your database on the cloud in a first place, then create a local key, then do you have to synchronize your copied DB so it will required the key to be opened ?

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, only sync the database and keep the key file locally. That way, you will always have an extra layer of protection for your database, even if it is synced online. It is protected by your Dropbox password, so no one can actually download it. But even if someone gets into your account, they will need your master password and the key file. As long as you keep that locally, it is pretty much impossible to get into your database. Hope that helps!

    Hallo Valentin, I've been using Keepass for many years and your videos opened up new possibilities and solved problems for me. So good - thank you! Question: why do I have to use portable? Can't I just store my kdbx in my cloud drive (Nextcloud) even if I use non-portable?

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Oli, yes you can do that, but then your KeePass settings won't be synchronized for you between different devices. I'm having a problem with Dropbox. I recently had my PC reset and reinstalled all my programs, including KeePass. Now, I have two copies of my KeePass database in Dropbox. The original isn't syncing, and the new one says it's a copy of my desktop and is causing a conflict. When I update the database, the original updates too, but I'm getting a message saying I'm out of storage, and my mobile version isn't syncing either. This doesn't make sense because the KeePass database is the only file I have in Dropbox. I've tried some solutions, but nothing's working. It says I'm out of space, but I'm clearly not.

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, where does it say you're out of space. On your Dropbox? Also, did you try to first download both databases (the original one and the conflicting one to your computer) and perform a manual merge? I'm not using the vanilla version of KeePass right now, so I can't guide you to the exact menu item, but there should be an option for that, which will allow you to combine your databases. From there, I would just delete the files from Dropbox and re-upload everything. Just make sure to keep additional back ups just in case. Otherwise, I haven't heard of such an issue before. Really hope you can find a solution!

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to backup your xxx.kdbx file, which is your KeePass database. Since I put mine into the KeePass folder, I backup the entire folder, which is great as all your settings will be backed up as well. Make sure that if you use a key file, you back that up separately for maximum security. Never back it up on the same usb stick, etc. as your main database.

    how does this keep you safe from overriding the file when trying to modify it at the same time?

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  ปีที่แล้ว

      KeePass has a built in synchronization feature for that purpose, which deals with conflicts when merging two different versions of the same database. You'll find more info about this on the official KeePass website.

    I want to salt my password, if my password is MasterPassword1234, I want my password manager only autofill MasterPassword and me manually type 1234. How can I do that? So if there are breaches, they don't know my real password.Thanks

    • @ValentinKossenko
      @ValentinKossenko  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, password salt is a very good idea. To use it, you just have to remove the {ENTER} command from your Auto-Type sequence in KeePass. Just click on an entry or group and navigate to the Auto-Type tab, then choose override Auto-Type sequence and remove the part I mentioned above. If you want to do this for an entire group, you can override all settings for a specific folder. Hope that helps!

      That might sound weird if you only watch half of this video. Since you will never know what type of encryption methods Google uses, you can never be sure about the safety of your data. Encrypting your database manually like shown in my tutorials will give you more convenience but also give you peace of mind about the actual methods used. Combined with a key file that is only stored locally, this strikes a good balance in terms of convenience and security in my opinion. But your mileage may of course vary!

      But why not promoting some alternative to google and microsoft that are more trustable ? (Microsoft products are all core coded in israel, probably we should completely delete the name from the list of options even with manual encryption)

      While I do understand this approach and also recommend one of these plugins in my other video, you have to make sure that the sync plugin you are using is safe. And this might be impossible for the average user because they don't understand the programming language of the plugin. It could as well be sending your database to another server without you ever noticing it.
