Love Rush, Alex composed many of the songs I grew up with playing in constant loop mode in my head, for that I'm eternally grateful.. With such a high-end, complex, sophisticated rig.... am I seeing a cheap-ass BOSS tuner on that pedal board? Somehow I find that awesome...
Interesting how Alex is using a regular Triamp for his main and his signature series for the dry. Also, I guess Alex's rig really is a 'tri-amp' with three amps running at the same time for a few of the songs hehe.. Also great to see him with some more backup gear in place; the four shows I saw on this leg of the time machine tour I don't think there were any technical problems at all. Between all these rig reviews for Alex, I don't think there's much that has been left out at all, thanks!
The people in this thread who question whether all this is necessary NEED TO LISTEN TO the very first Rush album all the way thru "Clockwork Angels." Rush went thru IMMENSE musical changes. The rig that Big Al used to record "Fly By Night" would have never worked on "Hemispheres." The rig he used on "Hemispheres" never would have worked on "Moving Pictures." The rig he used on "Moving Pictures" never would've worked on "Power Windows." The rig he used on "Power Windows" never would have worked on "Roll The Bones." You're coming from the perspective of bar bands who play the same songs every night. Who just plug in to your amp and play. You are not playing to 17,000 seat people. Every single song that Rush does requires a completely different guitar and sound treatment. If you're a purist blues musician, fine, but that is not Rush. The guitar sound that Alex had to generate during the "Power Windows"/"Hold Your Fire" period is so different from "2112" that you would think that the group had changed guitarists.

Have you listened to Rush's whole catalog?? YES!!! Listen to "2112" and then listen to "Hold Your Fire" and tell me this isn't all required. Rush changed with every record like David Bowie did. Alex's tone and everything he did as a player, both technically and sound wise, was totally different with each record and tour. Rush were totally different bands in 1976 and 1987. You must have this amount of equipment to cover all the sounds that Alex played throughout his career. He's not a punk musician.
Which is why I saw Rush play more shows than any band in history. They had so many phases and sound changes. Their ability to reproduce that all on stage in real time ( they triggered all samplers and arpeggiators in real time with their feet, hands and sticks) was astonishing. One of the greatest feats in the history of rock music.

I'm not going to watch this again, but at some point he makes the comment "A fairly simple setup" or something like that. All I am saying is that it is FAR, FAR from a simple setup. I used the Angus rig as an example of what a "simple setup" really is. Now you go and accuse me of comparing styles and growth as musicians and crap. Lighten up dude, I was not taking a crack at anyone here, just the simplicity of one rig to another. I love 'em all. Especially Alex Lifeson and Rush. Cool?
This rig has more technology than the ISS. I got a headache watching this. So maybe if I had $100,000 at least worth of equipment I too would sound great! Please feel free though to send me one of Alex's Amps.. I could never afford one. Lol. Peace out and I have been a major RUSH fan since the mid 1970s. Because he can afford to use 100 separate units, if he so chooses. After talented guitarists like Alex are gone, you'll never see great rigs like this again.

That's fine. But you aren't Rush. Listen to Caress Of Steel and then listen to Power Windows and you will know exactly why he needed all this complicated gear. Rush changed their sound DRASTICALLY with each record. If he used his Caress of Steel gear with the high tech, electronic gear that was needed to reproduce the music on Power Windows and Hold Your Fire it would have sounded horrific.
@sixstringfretter For somebody with the name sixstringfretter your question exposes your ignorance with respect to the type of bands they are. Rush continually changed, ACDC stayed the same. I learned to play guitar in the 80s listening to Van Halen, Rush, AC/DC, Early Metallica, Yngwie, and of course one of the greatest Guitar players ever in Rock Angus Young. You can't expect Alex to play Bytor and Snowdog and then play something off of Signals with the same equip..come on dude.
Wrong. Have you listened to Rush's whole catalog?? You act as if the gear he used on Rush's first record would have worked on the Signals tour. Rush, like Bowie, went thru so many musical manifestations that it was necessary for him to have all this gear. He couldn't produce the sounds he produced on "The Manhattan Project" with the gear he used on "2112." All this hear was 110% necessary. Rush was not a bar band.
I'm so jelous .... he lost me after, hello! i didn't hear a word that was said after that but started sweating at the fear of having to wire all that stuff together... I thought I was cool because I had 6 pedals on my pedal board!
Wow - what a complicated rig. Is this guitar tech an electrical engineer? Alex was a real craftsman of his trade who knew all of his tools. Most professional guitarists wouldn't even know what to do with such a complicated setup. I'm thinking of the late EVH, whose rig consisted of a guitar, amps, and a few stomp boxes. EVH's vaunted "brown sound" was mostly distortion, and didn't sound good to me, whereas Alex's tone was always killer.
Hendrix also had musicians around him with a fraction of the ability of Geddy Lee and Neil Peart (RIP). He never lived long enough to see the world of sequencers, synths and appreigators. This allowed Rush to explore more musical terrain than Hendrix ever did. Not to mention that Hendrix was stoned half the time.
The presentation would be better if the background music were switched OFF, for no one was really listening and it compromised what the large fellow was saying. Film making can be rather crass these days.
Where are the PRS guitars ? Here's a top secret notation; "Gibson and Les Paul's quality control in the standard USA Division in Nashville is horrible and getting worse by the year...!!!
that's probably why Alex uses Gibson custom guitars. The Alex Lifeson model is a custom shop, and I can guarantee you, it is an awesome instrument. I've heard that bullshit about Gibson's quality control, and I haven't yet played a bad guitar of them, I own two customs, and I also had a 335 custom, and they are/were all amazing instruments.

You can't expect Alex to play Bytor and Snowdog and then play something off of Signals with the same equip..come on dude.
spot on bud metallica is mainly boggies and a jc120 each and kirkuses his wah a lot
What's funny, is Al doesn't even need half of that shit to sound great.
Made me dizzy listening to that. Incredible stuff.
EVH's vaunted "brown sound" was mostly distortion, and didn't sound good to me, whereas Alex's tone was always killer.
alex rog is much the same as eddies really justin 12 fx units its much the same
Behringer !!!!!!!!!!
and jimmy hendrix only used a wah wah pedal......
yeh, that's why Hendrix sounds like Hendrix and Lifeson sounds like Lifeson. And thank god for that.
Hendrix also had musicians around him with a fraction of the ability of Geddy Lee and Neil Peart (RIP). He never lived long enough to see the world of sequencers, synths and appreigators. This allowed Rush to explore more musical terrain than Hendrix ever did. Not to mention that Hendrix was stoned half the time.
no he didnt he used fuzz a uniuvibe and delays as well
The presentation would be better if the background music were switched OFF, for no one was really listening and it compromised what the large fellow was saying. Film making can be rather crass these days.
rush background nusioc in fact they might have been playoing when he was talking
aha 0 dislikes. thats how it should be. XD
haha
Never saw a Cry Baby like that one before !
thats the rack the pedal is on stage
And of what good is it? That's what I keep asking myself. I mean, talk about vapid knowledge.
I've heard that bullshit about Gibson's quality control, and I haven't yet played a bad guitar of them, I own two customs, and I also had a 335 custom, and they are/were all amazing instruments.
nah theyve got better again those stupidrobot guitars and that crazy thing they did was overkill they even did a hendrix strat jimmmi played a v fender told tyhem to f off with strat they did fender never did a gibson les paul prs did with their own headstock and stairway to heaven was that taurus song rush were practically zep up til 2212 remember a;ex even his a twin neck too they all steal music from each other and evh said he taughtv randy err no they both pkasyed piano forst randy was a lot more classical than eddie who wass great never heard any classical from him diary of a madman and randy did a totally classical guitar piece called dee for his mum he cwas leaving ozzy to go totally classical that plane crash the contols could have been messed with that was likely ozzys managr remember sabbath rush and zep all kicked offaabout the same time and maded tghe 70s and 80s great mind you the 80-s cwas the nwobhm and after that it goot to be too much shredding
