I do think the MX-5 is the best overall sportscar. It's the total purist package... light weight, perfectly balanced, manual trans, naturally aspirated with high redline, rear drive. There's no other car that I can think of that embodies all of those attributes and when you put it all together, the experience is unmatched. Like you said, the best part is that you can use almost all of the MX-5's capability on public roads which means it has just the right amount of power for the typical driving enthusiast who doesn't go to the track every weekend, but does take the long way home from work.
I just purchased a 2021 MX-5 soft top GT in polymetal grey and, absolutely, Miata IS always the answer! I've been lusting after this car for 20 years and now that I finally own one I can't stop driving it! I did consider the Club RF and the GT RF, but ultimately decided that the purest form was the right choice for me. The soft top is $3000 cheaper than the RF plus you get the LSD and Bilstein dampers on the GT since 2019, so there no substantial performance benefit to the Club anymore. I also wanted the extra creature comforts in the GT. I got my GT for $30,900 which is a steal!
@Just think No, just the soft and RF. I do think the RF looks a little better in profile, but I agree that the true convertible feeling is missing. I'm glad I chose the GT convertible, it's definitely right Miata for me.
What a nice road your driving on. I love when theres a double yellow line instead of single yellow. Gives you little more confidence in the other drivers ability to stay in the lane on corners😂
Definitely an amazing sports car. I love my ND2 RF. Supercars and hypercars are amazing, but the fun is short lived. I would have to come to a stop and floor it, rinse and repeat over and over because that's all they're good for. A lightweight, well balanced and responsive car is great fun again and again on back roads without having to come to a complete stop and flooring it every time to have fun. You can have fun maybe 5% of the time you drive a supercar but you will have fun 90% of the time you drive an MX5 Miata.

What makes the MX5 so popular, is that it recreates the old British Classic sports car, for those of us on a fairly tight budget. It's very reliable, is cheap to run, drives so well, that few alternatives can match it. Just a brilliant all rounder, and ive owned one since Sep 2021.
I owned a Porsche 914 (Targa), 4 cylinder, 2000 lbs and 95hp...mid engine...what a great driving experience...you don't need a lot of horsepower to enjoy a sports car...this mx5 has a better power to weight ratio although it's not mid engine.
Honest to God story here... I was on another video (how Star Wars blaster sound was made) and one suggestion was to speed the video up to 1.25x normal. So I did. Then I got bored immediately and clicked on the nearest Raiti's Ride video. I think I got about 10 minutes in before I remembered that I had sped up the video, but before that I didn't notice... it just seemed...right. Kudos to your level of energy sir. Your videos rule. :)
Driving Mx5 and Porche in a matter of days you're simply having too much fun! On throttle, smiles, chirps 👍 I'm on my second mx5. Mk1 back in 90s and Mk3 2lt for last 8 years. She's called Marylin. The garage where I get her serviced knows her name as do my friends. Couldn't wish for a better companion to share the road, the sunshine, and to fill life with smiles. No other car comes close. Keep up the fab reviews! David, Manchester UK
I ordered a 2022 rf club in March’22, and it came 7/21/2022. The only option was the Polymetal Gray Metallic. Only accessory was the interior foot lighting. You had mentioned the smile…yeah, driving it home, I looked in the mirror to see my grin😊. The paint is way cool, and worth the $395…sometimes parts of it looks bluish. At moderate speeds, with the roof retracted and windows down, I could carry on a conversation with my passenger easily. I haven’t checked them out, but I had read somewhere there are semi-hidden small compartments in the seat backs. Trunk is of course small as expected, but I can fit my humongous gym bag in there with a little extra room. Thanx for putting up your video. I feel enthusiastic as you do.
Update 2021 Aug: I'm still in love with my Mazda (we don't call it Miata in Australia) MX-5 RF Auto 2 Litre Eternal Blue. Would not swap it for any Car. :)

One of your best be reviews, Jo. It's a car for people who love driving for sure. The thing that I noticed with mine was the rotation. It actually feels like the car pivots in the middle when you take corners. Quite remarkable!

This has been the definition of a true sports car for years, a modern day throwback. Light, nimble, NA engine that revs high and handles like a dream. It's certainly not a muscle car so don't compare it to one. It's also beautiful, that exterior is timeless. The interior unfortunately is getting all of Mazda's leftovers and doesn't reflect on their newer designs. Wait a year and this thing will once again be perfect!
I love how you just enjoy the driving aspect because when it comes down to it, that’s what we all enjoy. True enthusiast. I really like your channel sir. Big props!
Yup, that’s a no-no. I wasn’t even initiated into the club: it just happened naturally. It’s like an instinct once you buy the car. People started greeting, and I greeted back.
Awesome review ! Your so thorough with every little detail. Best car reviewer on TH-cam by far, always look forward to your opinions and feedback. Thanks for doing what you do, your absolutely the best at what you do.
Great review. I just got a used 2012 miata nc. I love it. It has only 47k true red, no longer available in the ND versions. It is now the third card in my garage. I had 28 cars in the past 15 years. This one is the best with the Stinger GT2
We have similar experiences. I daily drove an NC1 and NC2 since 2006, and really, really liked them. NC2s seem very under appreciated currently, but probably not for long. They’re a great bargain at the moment IMO. I liked my somewhat modified NC2 more than the ND1 in any configuration, so I skipped that version. I currently have a 2020 RF GT, and after about 6,000 miles, I’m starting to appreciate it, but I don’t think the transition from a tuned NC2 is as easy or obvious as a lot of online reviews and comments would suggest. Have a great time! Mine seemed fairly indestructible tracking and dailying. Other than routine maintenance, replacing bent wheels, and replacing ignition wires at about 150,000 miles, no repairs. It’s currently being converted to a full time track car. My other car currently is a Stinger GT2, also. NC2, ND2, GT2 are hands down our favorite cars of MANY. Including some much more expensive and “higher performance “ varieties. I usually give my cars away after we use them. The only car I really regret not keeping was our NA that we purchased in 1990. One reason I plan on keeping our NC2. That’s also one I’m pretty sure I would regret letting go of.
JOE ~ I think there are after market tailpipe add-ons to finish the tips out w/ black chrome or silver chrome treatments. I think the MX-5 is a true classic sports car, yet built for today. RWD, manual, 50/50 weight ratio, low center of gravity, good apex, not over done with pointless frills, true euro type standard sports positives - the RF actually reminds me more of a roadster & the soft top is a conventional convertible. pure fun - awesome seeing you enjoy the feel & thrills of driving it. - tony
Awesome On throttle action Joe. This car for sure puts a smile on your face. My wife has a 2019 RF Club and hands down it’s one of the funnest cars I personally have driven. We share the same zonks, but the good still outweigh the bad. Thanks Joe and Lori for bringing it.
When you buy one all you need to add is a stubby antenna and an aftermarket exhaust. By the way, you wont really notice the wind buffeting in the RF as you’ll be having to much fun to notice.
Hey Joe and Lori wanted to let you know after watching lots of your video for a good suv I went with Mazda CX-5 touring package 🙂 you guys are amazing. Got it 2 weeks ago and my sales lady did her best to get shipped from another state since we didn’t have it here in Syracuse NY

@@DragonKnightX12 well at least 0-60 they are barely any quicker and handling is probably pretty similar. But they have better aftermarket support and more space ! Better interior too
“Who’s that crazy guy on the video?”, my son asks me. “Well that’s Joe Raiti, son. One day, you’ll understand…” :-) I’m holding out for the 2022 GR 86, but watching you have fun driving this Mazda makes me think twice. Another great review guys.
Soft top GT in that color is my favorite, but you can't really go wrong with any trim! Re the antenna (maybe someone already commented), you cant ditch it. It's for FM. The shark fin is for satellite signals and can't replace an FM antenna. And since the back window lowers in both RF and ST you can't use a glass-mounted antenna either. Anyway, great video, thanks.
I replaced mine with the BASIKER 5 Inch Antenna - Stubby Radio Mast Antenna, it’s lower profile and looks better than the oem antenna and the reception of FM and AM stations have been fine.
I don't understand the need for another antenna for FM signal. This is the only car manufacturer that I know of that does two antennas, unless I'm mistaken.
I'm also 6'. The problem is that on track days with a helmet on clearance dissapears and it becomes somewhat uncomfortable. It's REALLY great on the track.
@Raiti’s Rides Thought I recognized that stretch of road…right in my backyard. I take that stretch of road all the time. Not a lot of great curvy roads in the area and love taking my motorcycle and Mazda3 Turbo down that same road. Great review.
I love the way this car looks. Would I choose it over the GR86? No, but the thing that people love is the drop top, and I'm not a fan of convertibles or even sunroofs. So that doesn't sway me.
Here in Spain there in a new version of the MX-5 out in 2022...it's called the 'Blue Cap Edition' which refers to the blue soft top it comes with. Available in body paint colors of black, red or a brand new super bright white color called "Platinum Quartz". So then there will be 3 white finishes to choose from- the new Platinum Quartz, Snowflake White Pearl and Arctic White in addition to the other colors. Not sure if the 'Platinum Quartz' finish carries over to the Black and Red version too. This new white really, really pops...I saw it next to the existing Snowflake White Pearl and Arctic White and it appeared much, much whiter and brighter. The actual soft top color is a lighter shade of blue compared to the previous one I believe.
I bought the RF in GT trim couple months ago and loved it! It's just too bad that they don't offer the Brembo package for GT trim. Those BBS wheels with red calipers are just killing! I am just slowly modifying my to look like that: Wilwood Front big brake kit (6 piston), Progress RF lowering springs from Good Win Racing, and Konig Dekagram wheels. It's been super fun so far, and I've never liked driving before.

Hey David! Thanks for letting me share this whole ON THROTTLE journey with you! Thank you for sharing what is in your garage!
👏🏾
Great car and the front end looks like it’s saying “hello”.
Hey Joe, it just feels so fun to just watch that amazing and connected driving experience, I can't imagine myself at the wheel and 'On Throttle!'😀🏎️
I can see you got an extra point of love about Mazdas and that’s great!
MX-5, is a true sportcar, superb machine and when you drop the top; the sportcar transforms to a world class GT, the World is Yours.. Miata = Rewarding.
One of your best be reviews, Jo. It's a car for people who love driving for sure. The thing that I noticed with mine was the rotation. It actually feels like the car pivots in the middle when you take corners. Quite remarkable!
Torque: 205Nm
Weight: 1135kg
Fuel consumptions: 9.09l/100km in city, 6.94l/100km on highway
Much appreciated Dave!
Very heavy for what it is
@@nozopoke1782 At least it’s lighter than say a BMW Z4.
@@DaveDVideoMaker that’s true. I was just remembering my old Renault Clio sport team. It weighted 1,082 kg and had 182 hp. Amazing little car, only bad thing compared to the mx5 is that the Clio was fwd
@@nozopoke1782 what are you talking about a quick search says it weighs 1,058 kg (2,332 lb) which is literally 1000lb lighter than most sports car nowadays
your reviews are awesome and commentaries are hilarious!...just to see you get all giddy with excitement when you 'on throttle' is GOLD!...you sold me on the MX-5 RF...keep up the good work. Love your vids from all the way up here in Toronto!
The best car channel around
ON THROTTLE, HERE WE GO! My fav part of all your videos.!
A Miata was the car I used to learn stick. Love these things. Love your reaction on throttle.
The car is so low and so light that I'd imagine you will feel like your going faster than you really are.
So very true but it also allows you to have a great connection with all 4 corners!
Can confirm. Can row through multiple gears full-on white knuckle, look at the speedometer and I’m still under the posted rural backroad speed limit.
Indeed. I picked up a 21' RF coming off a BMW 340 M Package. Going 60 in my Miata feels like going 100 in the BMW.
Such a fun car.
Feels like you're flying even doing the speed limit. Amazing feeling.
Yep you do, especially with an aftermarket exhaust
Though I'd prefer the soft top, regardless the miata is and will always be one of the best driver's cars out there
I can not argue with that one bit Paul!
So nice to see Raiti having so much fun
Don’t Ever Stop Doing Car Reviews You Make My Day
Thanks for taking the time to say that and going for a ride with me!
Dude nobody has more fun than you doing these videos! On Throttle bro!!!
Thanks George for letting me share this one with you!
Another great review Joe, you don’t miss. I was wondering, what is the BEST car you’ve ever reviewed?
That is so hard to say Zach! I know I can't stop thinking the 2017 Viper I reviewed!
@@RaitisRides oh yeah!!!
@@RaitisRides Fun fact: Dodge sold 2 new Vipers in Q3 of 2020.
I love how you just enjoy the driving aspect because when it comes down to it, that’s what we all enjoy. True enthusiast. I really like your channel sir. Big props!
Thanks Aaron! I appreciate you having my back!
Another great review let’s sit back and enjoy!
Thanks George for taking the ride with me!
@@RaitisRides always brother! 🔥💪
At 16:53min, not even greeting the Miata friend! :(
Absolutely amazing car! Thanks for the presentation of this legend!
Yup, that’s a no-no.
I wasn’t even initiated into the club: it just happened naturally. It’s like an instinct once you buy the car. People started greeting, and I greeted back.
I think this is the most fun I’ve seen you have going on throttle since I’m a subscriber!
Thanks Laurie!
Ramon the Miata has that affect.Go drive one and see for yourself. But I'm warning you
It's contagious.
@@michaelfont7239 Oh, no doubt about it!
Congrats! They are great cars!
Loving what Mazda is doing ! Their styling is very nice 👍🏻
That’s awesome! Congrats!
You had so much fun with this one Joe, loved the review. You have me considering a mx-5 down the road now. I hope you can do a review on a supercharged or turbo charged mx-5 one day. Keep up the great work!
Always loved this car, true driving, and yes definitely a sports car.
That is the best car review I've ever seen 👍🏻 "...there's some hardplastic, but i don't give a..."🤣
I was very worth the 25 minutes of my life i spent with it.
Love that car. Love the review. Huge fan of both the Miata RF and the channel.
Joe, love your channel! You make otherwise boring reviews interesting. This is my next purchase once Mazda restocks for 2023. Going for an RF Club in Polymetal Grey and a 6 speed manual.
Wow!!!!! That's One Clean & Beautiful Sports Car Ever Made From Mazda & It's My Dream Car For Sure, Nice Review Joe.
Thanks Jeremiah! I am so glad that you liked this one.
Now that you've driven the GR86 any comparison thoughts? I think I'd lean toward the GR but the RF does have the drop top.
I am definitely liking the changes that have been down to the GR 86!
Nissan Z... Or the Miata. Both more expensive but a lot better in my opinion.
@@trentmclellan1037 only a BRZ.
@@CapFlipGaming Have you driven a Gen 2 Twin though? Because from all I've seen, it looks like they absolutely demolish the ND2.
@@DragonKnightX12 well at least 0-60 they are barely any quicker and handling is probably pretty similar. But they have better aftermarket support and more space ! Better interior too
hold up now raiti, if you joe and lori both love driving a mazda mx5 miata; then you both should buy a brand new 2024 Mazda Miata to share
You are a riot to watch..love this Miata.. exact one I ordered..same color too…too bad delivery is on hold cuz of chips…maybe I’ll end up w/ a 2022.
The tyre screeching sounds awesome... 9:08 Needed some drifting...
Good call Alex! I will do that for the next one!
“Who’s that crazy guy on the video?”, my son asks me. “Well that’s Joe Raiti, son. One day, you’ll understand…” :-) I’m holding out for the 2022 GR 86, but watching you have fun driving this Mazda makes me think twice. Another great review guys.
wonderfully articulated. nice video. thank you.
@@sshamon72They all do, the FM antenna is the wire embedded in the back glass. But if the top folds you have to put it somewhere else.
Thank you for telling me about how many twinkies in each storage compartment
You got it!
Probably the funniest car review video Ive every watch!
Joe you are absolutely 💯 right! I test drive miata rf one of best car for the money!
Thanks for letting me share all the on throttle fun with you!
I'm also 6'. The problem is that on track days with a helmet on clearance dissapears and it becomes somewhat uncomfortable. It's REALLY great on the track.
I can just imagine! Thanks for the info!
@@RaitisRides it could use a bit more hp. 🤭
Learned how to drive manual in this car and it wasn't hard, so anyone on the fence about manual for that reason...just take the chance.
@Raiti’s Rides Thought I recognized that stretch of road…right in my backyard. I take that stretch of road all the time. Not a lot of great curvy roads in the area and love taking my motorcycle and Mazda3 Turbo down that same road. Great review.
Just a gorgeous car, poor man's porsche. Great review, incredibly comprehensive.
I love the way this car looks. Would I choose it over the GR86? No, but the thing that people love is the drop top, and I'm not a fan of convertibles or even sunroofs. So that doesn't sway me.
What a great sports car! Really enjoyable to drive!
I am so glad that you could go on throttle with me!
I've loved the Miata since it came out & the rf is for me.
I really like your videos! Plenty of things to learn and apply in my channel. Thank you! Miata is the answer!
Brembo, Recaro, Bilstein, BBS, never had any one of those famous tuning brands and this 🚗 gives you all from a single package.
You are so very right about that!
But yet only 181 HP, no sound and wheel gap large enough to fit a box of twinkees
I love the Miata, i hope that 5 years from now I’m going to be able to buy a Miata, if i do i will be back in 5 years.
Had deja vu for a second, i spent the majority of my middle school weekends messing around near that mall when i was a kid
