I have had a lot of extreme bloating with probiotics (Lactobacillus and soil based), a lot of painful gas too. But after two months the symptoms stopped and my gut starts to function again. Glad I have pushed through the symptoms
I am having too and I am pushing through the symptoms because I need to balance out the antifungals I am using for my sibo, thank goodness I discovered that these symptoms are caused by my increased intake.of probiotics, I thought it was my sibo getting worse and I was worried I was on the wrong protocol.
@ good luck to you 🍀 😊 it could be so uncomfortable but after that phase finally I feel normal again. I was prepared for worse though, because I heard some people need one whole year to recover.
This is helpful in shifting my paradigm. I have tried numerous probiotics over the years and almost all of them make me horribly sick at very low doses. The only probiotic that doesn't do that is Florastor. So, I'm going to try sticking with it daily for an extended period of time before attempting to add a bacteria based product.
I was taking probiotics in the morning and having horrible gas but when I started taking them before bed, the bloating went away. I also changed the kind of probiotics I was taking every couple months which also helped with side effects
I have been taking one probiotic (garden of life critical care blend) for 3 years. My husband couldn’t find that specific one and bought a different (garden of life gas and bloating blend and garden of life mood support blend) that then gave me severe pain, bloating, gnawing burning sensation every time I ate. I started breaking out with eczema and psoriasis all over my body and face, allergies became worse. I literally didn’t want to eat because I knew I would feel terrible. I started thinking back of anything that I had changed and thought, it has to be the probiotic. Im not sure what the differences are in each nor do I understand it but this is the only thing changed. The probiotic was same brand just different blends. This has went on for 3 weeks now and I stopped taking the probiotic for 2 days now, symptoms seem to be easing up a little.
I was taking the same Garden of Life Critical Care and felt great...then it wasn't stocked at the store, so I grabbed something else (different brand with different strains) and I started breaking out with intense itching. I was able to switch back to GoL and the issues subsided. I didn't actually realize the probiotic switch was the issue until I saw this video and your post. 🤦♀️
I am unfamiliar with many of your terms. I can say I have something going on with my gi tract. I started using slippery elm to make my stomach feel better, then I contracted a viral infection in my gi system. I had forceful belching, highly offensive gas and pretty uncomfortable pain. I also had brain fog, itchy skin, headache and diarrhea alternating with poor motility. I was given bentyl, omeprazole and simethicone. Then put on low Fodmap diet. Slow improvement but months later still have upsetting symptoms. I am trying a bacillus probiotic.
Garden of Life was sold. I think Nestle bought it. I used to use them until I started getting bad side effects and found out the company got sold and isn’t reputable anymore
I just started taking probiotics and bought GofL Mood and did feel a burning sensation most of the day. My hubby took it and he didn't complain. I bought the once daily and had no burning sensation. Maybe because it's different strains. Dunno.
Mike- Thank you for effort trying to navigate the "wild west" of probiotics and gut microbiome. From what I gather, research will probably go on for many years to learn what species are actually favorable and on top of that, how each of us is unique. It seems kind of overwhelming presently. I've done trials with a half dozen different Lacto blends and single strains, and with some bifido. Have one more planned. There are many blends, and despite what you might hope, the blend seems to make a difference. So far there is either some negative reactions or basically no improvement unfortunately. (and yeast based is probably not a good idea for me, and soil based I'm reluctant to put in the body)
You are the ONLY person talking about this. I have been DESPERATE. All the good guys prescribe probiotics and even tho I used to even make my own kefir, kimchi etc. I now cannot have anything fermented, even a liquid probiotic. I have found a soil based one I can tolerate then decided to take the adcvice of a new functional dr I was seeing and took a fermented liquid as it has more varieties of probiotics, with trepidation. I landed up at emergency after 3 days, feeling totally confused as to why my gut never improves, tho I only eat meat, some veg, some fruit. Take all the supps I need. Life seems to revolve around the gut these days!!!
Started your S. boulardi, took 1 capsule once a day...after 3 days was in too much digestive pain and increased brain fog/feeling sick to stomach sporadically and having episodes of diareah one day and constipated next day... (i've been diagnosed with SIBO/Fungal infection). Reduced dose to 1/4 capsule with food (opened capsule and placed on food) once a day but still having diareah sporadically after 3 days of this reduced dose. Any suggestions? I also ordered the lacto bifido blend and soil based but thought would only start with S.Boulardi....HELP
I used to be able to tolerate any probiotics until I made my own kefir. For now, I've decided to take a break to give my gut some rest, but I plan to try again later. I've been on three rounds of antibiotics this year, which I really disliked, and I think that might have something to do with how I feel. I definitely don’t want to give up on kefir. Thank you for all the info.
Thank you for some insight to this subject. I've suffered from Gerd for over 30 years. My doctor has only offered ppi's. I've tried numerous things to overcome my gerd. I recently started taking Seed in hopes to fix my issue.

Hi doc, thanks for the informative video. I've been hearing a lot about L reuteri recently. A video on that strain would be appreciated. I know you said not to focus on certain strains but this one seems to be a bit unique. Thanks!

So true about timing, especially with boulardii. That can be volcanic for me. One thing that's helped me a ton is putting the boulardi tab in apple vinegar and feeding it sugar and taking it in liquid form rather than the cap. I'm not sure if there is a difference in potency or absorption, but I think it may be how the boulardii has a big gas reaction when it interacts with certain things.
Very helpful thank you, have you seen very many extremely sensitive but gut derived MCAS patients? Does this include these type of patients also where they still can find one probiotic that works for them? One of the more straightforward videos I’ve seen on probiotics really appreciate you taking the time.
Really appreciate your help and that you answer questions. Would love to see a video on the safety of soil based probiotics .. I’ve been researching and there is some conflicting information about them .. are they safe? Is there a substitute?
Excellent video. I purchased the Triple Therapy Probiotics which arrived yesterday. After the first day I'm already feeling some discomfort, so I wanted to check out some of the hypotheses behind this. It's not severe, but I'd say "mild to moderate turbulence" is an apt descriptor!! I was diagnosed with SIBO-methane about a year ago and haven't had any success with rifamixin, different diets, and some herbal treatments. I am taking Allicin now (finishing a bottle); is that okay to take around the same time as the triple therapy probiotic? Thanks so much! (I've been taking the Allicin for about 3 weeks with zero impact that I discern.)
Can you speak to Stonehedge probiotics? I have been struggling with stomach issues the last few years. In October I had to take an antibiotic and then slowly over time my irritable bowel syndrome has become worse. I’ve also been the most stressed in my life so I know that might have to do with it. I’ve gone to the Gastro a ton they said more fiber and take align. Did not work. I’ve done the fod l-map- lost tons of weight. Recently I’ve been trying Stonehedge for two weeks and I have tons of gas and feel majorly lethargic. I also have to procedures coming up to screen for anything bad in the next few weeks. I’m at a loss and don’t know what to do.
I recently started getting rosacea symptoms. I started a probiotic and and got more redness. Started a higher dose different strains and my face was blasted. I went back to the lower dose. No other symptoms though, beside the rosacea stuff.
Thank you !! I’ve been taking a blend of lacto/bifido 5-10 billions CFU for a month and a half now and see improvements but I’m still having stomach pain and acid reflux when taking it .. I tried adding akkermansia (per practitioner advice) for a couple of days only because the stomach pain, burning and reflux were unbearable .. so I stopped and tried S. Boulardii but after 3 days I had major burning in stomach/ esophagus and throat. Having MCAS I don’t think soiled based will set well with me. I was told S. Boulardii helps with MCAS but the reaction was too painful.. Any suggestions? Thank you !
As a general rule, if one is helping stay on it and then add other in addition. Synergy of different formulas and time on whatever you tolerate. Peak improvements might not be seen until 3+ months. Hope this helps!
Healthier people have less of a need, probably little to no need, but a few recent studies found health individuals improved mood or antioxidant levels when using a probiotic.
Thank you so much Doctor Ruscio. Great info very detailed. Is there a minimal dose for probiotics? I am extremely reactive(hangover brain fog, skiing peeling) I tried your triple therapy couldn’t handle it. Even one at a time it’s hard.
I developed serious gut issues with cramping and bowel issues. I began taking a liquid probiotic along with quite a few other supplements and my symptoms have significantly improved over the last year. However, the one thing I can’t quite understand is I have night time itching of my hands and feet. I also occasionally feel a sudden flush and will get itchy and break out in small hives. It used to be quite worse so it is improving but would just like to figure out the cause. I was experiencing this before I began taking any supplements.
I started drinking raw milk kefir and I started out with a half cup a day. After the first day, I started having gas and cramping. So I stopped. I was thinking that maybe if I start again only slowly with half of what I was taking, I may not have the gas and cramping as bad and I could tolerate it better. What do you think?
The bacteria in the probiotic can trigger histamine/ tyramine issues, like L. Reuteri etc. Especially when you have enterococcus overgrowth. It really depends on your microbiome and which type or strain you are using.
Not heard of fermented tea. I have heard of fermented sweet tea (Kombucha), is this the same? I was making mine owe, so it is not so sweet as store bought Kombucha. Thank you.
@@r.marian6277 One should start slowly with kombucha. Start with a small amount each day. I LOVE it, but it has been a while, so I will have to start out slowly.
Is worsening fatigue common for probiotic use? When I first started, the first few days were fine, just some mild nausea and cramping. About a week in and I’m experiencing moderate fatigue and brain fog.
Super informative stuff!! I am currently taking high quality italian probiotics (Boulardii and a blend of Lacto/Bifido), but I have noticed an increase in sleep issues and sebhorreic dermatitis. I'll give it a week to see if it's die off, but if these side effects continue should I carry on regardless of the symptoms? If it's a reaction to the probiotic itself because of leaky gut, should I stop immediately? Or can I ride through the side effects if I can tolerate living with these issues (dermatitis, sleep issues, a bit of bloating) waiting for the probiotics cure the leaky gut? Thank you so much, your channel is the best!!!
Hey there! I suggest you watch my other video about navigating die-off. th-cam.com/video/d-oSZLU5Flk/w-d-xo.html I discuss how long to give it and potential options. I do often recommend a trial window then potentially switching to a different probiotic if symptoms persist. But I go into more detail in the video so give that a watch and let me know what you think!
@@DrRuscioDC just watched and it actually solved some of my doubts thank you! In case it’s not a die off, do you think the intolerance / immune reaction to probiotics is an obstacle to healing, or will the probiotics heal the gut anyway in the long run - meaning tolerance will get better over time?
I have been diagnosed with leaky gut in July I am taking a high quality corebiotic (Lacto, Baci) to help correct this. My brain fog gets much worse when I take it what should I do? I feel much worse when I take it, it has been 4 days.
Thank you. But what about probiotics and SIFO ? I'm taking Bouldarii for SIFO. I read somewhere to NOT take any other probiotics for SIFO because it will make it worse.
I've been doing the triple therapy for a few weeks with s. Boulardii, spore based & a lacto/bifido blend and have not seen any positive changes.. only constipation 😕

This was very informative! Just finished 2 months of antimicrobials for SIBO. Started probiotics by drinking kefir for a week and tolerated it ok. This week I started soil based probiotics and when moving to daily I started having gut pain plus nerve tingling (even in my feet). I also feel very fatigued. Would you recommend I stop the soil based and stick with kefir? Or stick it out for a whole week? Is there another probiotic you’d recommend I try first?
Watch Dr Rajsree Nambidripad videos. I'm following her SIBO protocol ❣️ also using MegaIgG2000 from microbiome Labs. Finally~I'm on my way back! Feeling almost normal and better every day 😊
You've mentioned that probiotics don't need to make it past stomach acid to be effective. With that being said, I've been taking BalanceOne probiotics which claim a technology of slow release throughout the day. By the 2nd day after having swelling in my intestines and very narrow stools and severe pain and getting cold, the probiotics kicked in and i felt as if there was lava coursing through my guts. However, it made me go from consipated to having several bowel movements per day. With that being said, surely there must be benefits of probiotics on the large intestines and colon, as inflammation can occur there. Or is the inflammatory reactions of the large intestines directly related to the small intestines?
Oh oh I am taking vital flora 100 billon live cultures and 100 billion strains of probiotics by vital planet , 3rd day and I tired , I just finished the 3 medication regime to cure H Plylori went through 14 days . After 5 days I started having diarrhea and got the probiotic .my question is can I stop taking all together this high dose of probiotics or should I get a lower dose instead ? Thank you . Diarrhea stopped on day one of taking vital flora .P.S. I also am diagnosed with a 6cm hiatal hernia
I took kefir it was an organic from a farm probiotic… I took a cup of it and was sick for a whole week like I had the flu. I have no issues with dairy but this probiotic the lactose was eaten off cause they eat lactose. So how do I know if it was die off or allergies? And if I want to try this again how much should I take? I took a shot and I still felt horrible.
I tell ya, boy was I glad I'm single when that die off hit a week in to the lactobacillus and Bifido probiotic 😂 An enteric peppermint cap sorted me out, and going gaps and low FODMAP combined has been amazing. The weight is finally shifting as my gut swells down. Ceylon cinnamon, highly recommend!
A while back, you did a video where you discussed how decongestants can disrupt the microbiome. Is it just oral decongestants? Could a nasal mist do the same thing? I can taste as it drains down my throat.
i just started a child’s dose of probiotics(because i was told to start slow) about 3 weeks ago but the last fews days a get this urge to gasp or sigh the last fews days
In several years of studying probiotics I have never seen the clear statement you cite ' that the small intestine is where 'leaky gut occurs' . In a great deal of the literature, including some functional medicine articles, leaky gut is cited as a cause, contributor or result of Gut dysbiosis, IBS, Candida etc etc where the wall of the intestine gets broken down and toxic by-products get released into the bloodstream'. I did not see the phrase 'small intestine' . If true, How widespread is this misunderstanding? A really informative and fact checking article. However disappointing that in the face of negative reaction to probiotics the advantages of taking low level CFU - e.g 5 billion CFU per day not 25 billion CFU ( as in Dr Ruscio's Lacto-Bifido probiotic) is not investigated ( single or meta studies) at all. After all with medication in general if a large teaspoon upsets you someiimes a smaller teaspoon may be the answer.
Y am Indonesian,,i have SIBo and ibs,,why y am getting worst when y take probiotik,,but getting better when y am take antibiotik and metronidazol,,y am sorry but my English
Even with no alergens for probiotics I get a histamine type reaction for the lacto-bifido but didn’t a few years ago and they were very effective. I do have leaky gut, disbiosis, H Pylori overgrowth and possibility of SIBO. I rarely have good stools and trouble digesting, enzymes have helped but maybe I need more…
@@DrRuscioDC Yes I think I’ll try slow instead of high dose probiotic. I’ve been having issues for over a decade and recently been extremely bad. I have been doing mastic gum and cabbage juice which helped some.
@@Sab8190 the cabbage juice and mastic gum has helped. But also digestive enzymes and digestive bitters along with l reuteri probiotic. However I still think I need other probiotics. Still need to experiment. Eating more beef as also seem to help quite a bit.
I wanted to try S boulardi from sprouts but the Jarrow brand they have says Saccharomyces boulardii+ MOS.....what is MOS? Is that ok? I don't see MOS on your brand. Any advice?
Im from Russia and Im so happy to find this channel, I can't even tell. After taking Iron and artichoke supplements for my anemia and biliar problems I started to have really the worst IBS I ever had in my life. I started Saccharomyces and it had helped for 3 weeks but when i stoped taking it diarrhea came back.. And I also was trying to take sinbiotic Maxilac with lacto bifido bacterias and oligosaccharides and got much worse then even before... Now I understand why. Still have to figure out how to fix my condition tho. We have lots of clabber and acidofillin, kefir and yougurts and a lot of fermented food here in the stores but im a bit scared to start those because of my diarrhea and bloating.. Fiber is also makes it worse.

Using Bif and Lac plus a soil based combo that includes Saccharomyces....take it 1st thing in the morning. Wait for approx an hour then have breakfast with yogurt/ kefir/muesli/chia /honey and glutamine. No histamine reactions all day. Have supper and have reactions almost immediately after then take Saccharomyces and it stops.... Histamine storms when they happen are the horror of horrors.... Hahaha
@ayadhussin6771 I think she means make your own probiotic by consuming food that contain probiotics like plain yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi,if you consume a mix of those you should be able to get enough probiotics as in a pill.
I always laugh when u guys say check with your doctor. She never answers me and if she does she just says I know u don’t have SIBO celiac or anything else. How? She just knows. Umm. Ok. And no I can’t find another dr. Being poor is wonderful.
They only say it because they HAVE TO. I stopped checking with my doctor a long time ago, LoL. She knows way less than I do. These videos/podcasts/interviews will teach you how to care for yourself. I found a functional doc, who gives me a discount and takes payments 😍 Don't give up!!

Feeling much better on SB.. do I take this in conjunction with herbals for Sibo .. or stop while on the herbals? Thank you
Either approach can work. I like starting with probiotics then considering adding herbs on top next. Check this with your doctor.
Agreed its individual. Probiotics are usually net antihistamine however.
Nettle tea apparently has natural antihistamines .
Not heard of fermented tea. I have heard of fermented sweet tea (Kombucha), is this the same? I was making mine owe, so it is not so sweet as store bought Kombucha. Thank you.
Yes, Kombucha is a fermented tea! Making your own is amazing!
Do not take kombucha. I had a horrible reaction to it. It felt like my stomach was going to explode.
@@r.marian6277
One should start slowly with kombucha.
How are u now.. usually there’s die off effects at the beginning
How did you become
I feel like I am getting a yeast infection. Akermansia is the only one that I don’t have issues with.
I take Akkermansia too. It’s one of the best just a little pricey…
The one that I get is $39.54 so it isn't to bad.

Feeling almost normal and better every day 😊
This is an awesome video. Thanks so much.
How long do you recommend taking probiotics for a potential leaky gut?
Roughly 2-3 months as a general rule
What makes probiotic formulas more healing than real fermented foods( kefir kombucha cultured veggies daily)?
I alternate my use of coconut kefir , sugar free greek yogurt, kimchi and put miso paste with my bonebroth.. so far so good
Oh oh I am taking vital flora 100 billon live cultures and 100 billion strains of probiotics by vital planet , 3rd day and I tired , I just finished the 3 medication regime to cure H Plylori went through 14 days .
My doctor told me to take probotic 2 hour before or 2 hour after antibiotics 😊
I took kefir it was an organic from a farm probiotic… I took a cup of it and was sick for a whole week like I had the flu. I have no issues with dairy but this probiotic the lactose was eaten off cause they eat lactose. So how do I know if it was die off or allergies? And if I want to try this again how much should I take? I took a shot and I still felt horrible.
Try coconut kefir

what if you have H pylori ? can probiotic's help
I believe a nasal decongestant may also disrupt the microbiome, but maybe to a lesser extent
i just started a child’s dose of probiotics(because i was told to start slow) about 3 weeks ago but the last fews days a get this urge to gasp or sigh the last fews days
A calm gut sounds awesome.
100%
The only thing that works for me is a carnivore diet it really keeps my gut calm.
Excellent
Y am Indonesian,,i have SIBo and ibs,,why y am getting worst when y take probiotik,,but getting better when y am take antibiotik and metronidazol,,y am sorry but my English
How did you become
Even with no alergens for probiotics I get a histamine type reaction for the lacto-bifido but didn’t a few years ago and they were very effective. I do have leaky gut, disbiosis, H Pylori overgrowth and possibility of SIBO. I rarely have good stools and trouble digesting, enzymes have helped but maybe I need more…
You have a protocol to experiment with here :)
@@DrRuscioDC Yes I think I’ll try slow instead of high dose probiotic. I’ve been having issues for over a decade and recently been extremely bad. I have been doing mastic gum and cabbage juice which helped some.
How are you now??
@@Sab8190 the cabbage juice and mastic gum has helped. But also digestive enzymes and digestive bitters along with l reuteri probiotic. However I still think I need other probiotics. Still need to experiment. Eating more beef as also seem to help quite a bit.
I make my own yogurt, kefir, fermented foods.
Nice
I wanted to try S boulardi from sprouts but the Jarrow brand they have says Saccharomyces boulardii+ MOS.....what is MOS? Is that ok? I don't see MOS on your brand. Any advice?
MOS is a form of prebiotic. So if it's under 3 grams, it's likely fine. However some with sensitive guts don't always do well with prebiotics.
i started taking 50billion and noticed ringing in my ears and weird feeling, more tired etc its lacto-bifido blend one

Thank you!
is it enough to just eat yogurt?
Using Bif and Lac plus a soil based combo that includes Saccharomyces....take it 1st thing in the morning. Wait for approx an hour then have breakfast with yogurt/ kefir/muesli/chia /honey and glutamine. No histamine reactions all day. Have supper and have reactions almost immediately after then take Saccharomyces and it stops.... Histamine storms when they happen are the horror of horrors.... Hahaha
Oh boy, good luck :-)
I better trust my diet rather than a pill!!! Who knows what is there in a pill 🤔
Food first
Make your own. It's very easy.
@@PardieDiemHow? Please explain
@@ayadhussin6771 There are numerous videos on youtube that will walk you through the process of making yogurt, kefir, fermented foods.
@ayadhussin6771 I think she means make your own probiotic by consuming food that contain probiotics like plain yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi,if you consume a mix of those you should be able to get enough probiotics as in a pill.
i need the right microbiome to support the health and output of my L-cells
Can a woman take a probiotic created specifically for men?
PS.... stopped allergy meds.... can read what's happening better. 👍💯
They keep me awake.
They say that for liability protection. Otherwise you might be able to blame them for medical advice. So they put the responsibility back on you.
@@raewise6345 i can’t even afford one with a discount but I’m glad u found help. Some of us aren’t that lucky. I can’t even find one that takes Medicare. They refuse to see me because I saw another doctor. They won’t take you if u have seen another doctor in the past 3 years.
I wish I had seen this video before I started taking your Triple Therapy Probiotics. They caused me increased gut inflammation and so much pain I couldn't eat. Buyer please beware.

If Kefir is working, I don't see need to introduce additional probiotics this soon. With sibo, you need to give your body time to adjust and very gradually introduce
