Probiotic Side Effects & How to Fix Them

  • Are your probiotic side effects a positive sign, or should you make a modification?
It’s all too common that when people take a probiotic and experience some kind of side effect, they take it to mean that probiotics aren’t right for them. And that’s understandable.
But more often than not, these side effects can be signaling something good (that they’re going to work in your gut) or simply that a small adjustment needs to be made.
Here’s how to know which side effects mean what.

Hi Dr. Ruscio. I was wondering if you were aware of any studies that have examined the efficacy of probiotic suppositories for LIBO? These seem to be the latest trend in the probiotic market and I was curious if any studies have been conducted around their effects. I can't seem to find any via Google; though it seems like an interesting premise to correct an issue in the large intestine via direct delivery.

Mike- Thank you for effort trying to navigate the "wild west" of probiotics and gut microbiome. From what I gather, research will probably go on for many years to learn what species are actually favorable and on top of that, how each of us is unique. It seems kind of overwhelming presently. I've done trials with a half dozen different Lacto blends and single strains, and with some bifido. Have one more planned. There are many blends, and despite what you might hope, the blend seems to make a difference. So far there is either some negative reactions or basically no improvement unfortunately. (and yeast based is probably not a good idea for me, and soil based I'm reluctant to put in the body)

So true about timing, especially with boulardii. That can be volcanic for me. One thing that's helped me a ton is putting the boulardi tab in apple vinegar and feeding it sugar and taking it in liquid form rather than the cap. I'm not sure if there is a difference in potency or absorption, but I think it may be how the boulardii has a big gas reaction when it interacts with certain things.

(i've been diagnosed with SIBO/Fungal infection). Reduced dose to 1/4 capsule with food (opened capsule and placed on food) once a day but still having diareah sporadically after 3 days of this reduced dose. Any suggestions? I also ordered the lacto bifido blend and soil based but thought would only start with S.Boulardi....HELP

I have been taking one probiotic (garden of life critical care blend) for 3 years. My husband couldn’t find that specific one and bought a different (garden of life gas and bloating blend and garden of life mood support blend) that then gave me severe pain, bloating, gnawing burning sensation every time I ate. I started breaking out with eczema and psoriasis all over my body and face, allergies became worse. I literally didn’t want to eat because I knew I would feel terrible. I started thinking back of anything that I had changed and thought, it has to be the probiotic. Im not sure what the differences are in each nor do I understand it but this is the only thing changed. The probiotic was same brand just different blends. This has went on for 3 weeks now and I stopped taking the probiotic for 2 days now, symptoms seem to be easing up a little.

I am unfamiliar with many of your terms. I can say I have something going on with my gi tract. I started using slippery elm to make my stomach feel better, then I contracted a viral infection in my gi system.
I had forceful belching, highly offensive gas and pretty uncomfortable pain. I also had brain fog, itchy skin, headache and diarrhea alternating with poor motility.
I was given bentyl, omeprazole and simethicone. Then put on low Fodmap diet. Slow improvement but months later still have upsetting symptoms.
I am trying a bacillus probiotic.

You are the ONLY person talking about this. I have been DESPERATE. All the good guys prescribe probiotics and even tho I used to even make my own kefir, kimchi etc. I now cannot have anything fermented, even a liquid probiotic. I have found a soil based one I can tolerate then decided to take the adcvice of a new functional dr I was seeing and took a fermented liquid as it has more varieties of probiotics, with trepidation. I landed up at emergency after 3 days, feeling totally confused as to why my gut never improves, tho I only eat meat, some veg, some fruit. Take all the supps I need. Life seems to revolve around the gut these days!!!

Can you speak to Stonehedge probiotics? I have been struggling with stomach issues the last few years. In October I had to take an antibiotic and then slowly over time my irritable bowel syndrome has become worse. I’ve also been the most stressed in my life so I know that might have to do with it.
I’ve gone to the Gastro a ton they said more fiber and take align. Did not work.
I’ve done the fod l-map- lost tons of weight.
Recently I’ve been trying Stonehedge for two weeks and I have tons of gas and feel majorly lethargic.
I also have to procedures coming up to screen for anything bad in the next few weeks.
I’m at a loss and don’t know what to do.

I tried adding akkermansia (per practitioner advice) for a couple of days only because the stomach pain, burning and reflux were unbearable .. so I stopped and tried S. Boulardii but after 3 days I had major burning in stomach/ esophagus and throat. Having MCAS I don’t think soiled based will set well with me. I was told S. Super informative stuff!! I am currently taking high quality italian probiotics (Boulardii and a blend of Lacto/Bifido), but I have noticed an increase in sleep issues and sebhorreic dermatitis. I'll give it a week to see if it's die off, but if these side effects continue should I carry on regardless of the symptoms? If it's a reaction to the probiotic itself because of leaky gut, should I stop immediately? Or can I ride through the side effects if I can tolerate living with these issues (dermatitis, sleep issues, a bit of bloating) waiting for the probiotics cure the leaky gut? Thank you so much, your channel is the best!!!

You've mentioned that probiotics don't need to make it past stomach acid to be effective. With that being said, I've been taking BalanceOne probiotics which claim a technology of slow release throughout the day. By the 2nd day after having swelling in my intestines and very narrow stools and severe pain and getting cold, the probiotics kicked in and i felt as if there was lava coursing through my guts. However, it made me go from consipated to having several bowel movements per day.
With that being said, surely there must be benefits of probiotics on the large intestines and colon, as inflammation can occur there. Or is the inflammatory reactions of the large intestines directly related to the small intestines?

Im from Russia and Im so happy to find this channel, I can't even tell. After taking Iron and artichoke supplements for my anemia and biliar problems I started to have really the worst IBS I ever had in my life. I started Saccharomyces and it had helped for 3 weeks but when i stoped taking it diarrhea came back.. And I also was trying to take sinbiotic Maxilac with lacto bifido bacterias and oligosaccharides and got much worse then even before... Now I understand why. Still have to figure out how to fix my condition tho. We have lots of clabber and acidofillin, kefir and yougurts and a lot of fermented food here in the stores but im a bit scared to start those because of my diarrhea and bloating.. Fiber is also makes it worse.

Even with no alergens for probiotics I get a histamine type reaction for the lacto-bifido but didn’t a few years ago and they were very effective. I do have leaky gut, disbiosis, H Pylori overgrowth and possibility of SIBO. I rarely have good stools and trouble digesting, enzymes have helped but maybe I need more…

I wanted to try S boulardi from sprouts but the Jarrow brand they have says Saccharomyces boulardii+ MOS.....what is MOS? Is that ok? I don't see MOS on your brand. Any advice?

    • @DrRuscioDC
      @DrRuscioDC  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

MOS is a form of prebiotic. So if it's under 3 grams, it's likely fine. However some with sensitive guts don't always do well with prebiotics.

In several years of studying probiotics I have never seen the clear statement you cite ' that the small intestine is where 'leaky gut occurs' . In a great deal of the literature, including some functional medicine articles, leaky gut is cited as a cause, contributor or result of Gut dysbiosis, IBS, Candida etc etc where the wall of the intestine gets broken down and toxic by-products get released into the bloodstream'. I did not see the phrase 'small intestine' . If true, How widespread is this misunderstanding? A really informative and fact checking article. However disappointing that in the face of negative reaction to probiotics the advantages of taking low level CFU - e.g 5 billion CFU per day not 25 billion CFU ( as in Dr Ruscio's Lacto-Bifido probiotic) is not investigated ( single or meta studies) at all. After all with medication in general if a large teaspoon upsets you someiimes a smaller teaspoon may be the answer.

Using Bif and Lac plus a soil based combo that includes Saccharomyces....take it 1st thing in the morning. Wait for approx an hour then have breakfast with yogurt/ kefir/muesli/chia /honey and glutamine. No histamine reactions all day. Have supper and have reactions almost immediately after then take Saccharomyces and it stops.... Histamine storms when they happen are the horror of horrors.... Hahaha

This was very informative! Just finished 2 months of antimicrobials for SIBO. Started probiotics by drinking kefir for a week and tolerated it ok. This week I started soil based probiotics and when moving to daily I started having gut pain plus nerve tingling (even in my feet). I also feel very fatigued. Would you recommend I stop the soil based and stick with kefir? Or stick it out for a whole week? Is there another probiotic you’d recommend I try first?
