Dr. Mike, I enjoyed your video. I am about 5 weeks out from TKP for my left knee. I have little to no pain for the most part. I go to PT twice a week and right now, I am at 100 degree flexion and 12 degrees of extension. My biggest issue is extension. I have had numerous surgeries on my left leg due to osteomyelitis as a child. A couple of the PTs believe that old scar tissue might be adhering to the new scar tissue. I am trying to determine if the Kinesio tape would help with my getting better flexing and/or extension. Thanks, Mark
Hey Mark! 🙏🏻 thank you for watching and I appreciate you coming by to comment! I’ve commonly used the Kinesio tape on my patients after knee replacement to reduce edema which as a result improves their range of motion. When a joint is swollen and inflamed it will typically be more difficult to move, but as swelling subsides that usually results in greater range of motion. I do think this could help in addition to continuing to work on your knee extension stretches! I made a few videos on my favorites exercises to help restore flexibility in the knee after surgery! I think you might find them helpful! I’ll link them below! th-cam.com/video/vOlS7caH2h0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=_PwDFoGUVyQARQ8t Hoping for a fast and smooth recovery!
Dr. Mike, Wow that was a quick response and I truly appreciate it. I will definitely check out the video and other videos. Thanks again for your efforts and professionalism! Mark
It is totally safe to do so! That’s why you can purchase these products at any local sporting goods store. And if it was my knee I would continue to use the tape on myself to do whatever it takes to speed recovery and reduce any swelling that occurs! The only thing I would say is that each product may use a different adhesives so just monitor your skin for the first few days after application to ensure you don’t have any skin irritation from the tape! Let me know which one ☝️ you decide on if you do!
@@MovewithDrMike Thank you for the information. I'm about 5 months out from having my left knee replaced and will probably have the right one done this summer or fall. I meet with the surgeon May 2nd for follow up and to set a surgery date for the right one. I still have swelling from time to time with my left knee, and I think I'll get some tape to help with it now. After surgery I had to wear the compression hose, so I guess I could put the tape on first and then put the hose on when I have surgery. Thanks again.
Hi Mike, I have just got onto your channel thanks for advice, I am 57y old just had knee replacement surgery, (4 weeks post op) doing all the advised exercises to get back to recovery and still taking pain meds and pain seems never ending😢etc. the problem I’m having is sleeping, I can’t get a comfortable position tossing and turn all night, pain in gluts and shooting up leg, really uncomfortable as you’d imagine, do have any thoughts/advice/suggestions thanks for your time. Brian
Hey Brian thanks for stopping by to watch and taking the time to comment! I’m sorry you’re experiencing this much pain. Sounds like you might be experiencing some nerve tension which is caused when the nerves behind the leg that run into the hip and lower back become irritated. I’ve found that people who can’t tolerate lying on their back with their leg elevated sometimes do better on their side. Some lie on the surgery side and others lie on the non affected side both with a pillow in between their legs. Hope this helps and take care.
Hi Mike thanks for getting back, I have been doing what you suggested so at least I am on the right track, do you think the shooting pain down the leg will alleviate over time or will I just have to manage it as best I can? Again thanks for your time, Brian
@@brijones8769 it sounds like you’re on the right track! Good job ! If this pain is new for you then I’d definitely monitor it to assess if it’s getting worse or better over time. For procedures like this it’s typical to have more pain in the beginning and then as you heal it tends to improve. It’s always best to communicate with your surgeon about best options for pain management! Thanks for watching!
I’m sorry you are disappointed. As for anything being even minutely better would be preferred over bone on bone and further disintegration of my joint. We all were told that there may be numbness….once again, much better than bone grinding away bone. Yes, limb shortening can happen…again I refer you to my previous statement. I much prefer to look at the glass as half full than the opposite. A bit of positive thinking can do wonders. Have a great day.😊
I had bilateral TKR on 10/31 & my right knee is being stubborn with straightening. I also still have a hard time sleeping because when I lay down i just cant get comfortable with a pillow or without. Do you think this would be beneficial being that in so far Post-Op?

Hi Dr. Mike, I’m most two months post knee replacement and dealing with a lot of inflammation and swelling still. Would you recommend trying this taping method this long after replacement? I am on new round of anti inflammatories and would prefer it to be taking an Rx.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I do think this taping method can aid in a patient’s recovery even after 2-3 months post op! Try it out and let me know how it goes! Wishing you a fast recovery!
I think it’s relative. I prefer narrow strips because then it allows you to spread the tape and cover more surface area. But I’m sure the wide strip would also work fine. If you do try both and notice a difference I would love to hear how it worked out for you! Thanks for watching and great question!
You can begin using this as soon as the day after surgery. It stays on pretty well so you may need to replace it every 4-5 days! Hope this helps and thanks again for watching!!
In this video I provide a step by step guide on how to cut and apply the tape over the skin. You can use it before and immediately after surgery! Wishing you the best of luck!!
I am a 73 year old woman living in Australia. I have had the second total knee replacement in the same knee-my right knee in the space of 14 months. The surgeon took the original prosthetic out and put the new one in because I kept falling over and my knee kept giving away without notice causing me to fracture many ribs, my neck my foot some compress discs, many concussion lacerations and other soft tissue injuries so he decided to put a new one in. I am over three months out of my second knee replacement and I have 24/7 pain which would be a score of 10 out of 10 and I have been on crutches for 17 months now with excruciating pain day and night and it never changes and I can only manage to walk on my feet for about two hours and then I am absolutely crippled with pain. Would this tape be of any use to me at all? I have been unable to use meds for relief and is icing and elevation is all that helps but it has totally debilitated me and my life not only physical but my mental well-being as well because I just don’t feel like I’m getting any better and I am continuing to do all the rehabilitation exercises and I did spend five weeks in a rehabilitation hospital post operation. Any help you can give me would be most appreciated. Thank you very much.
Thank you for taking the time to comment and watch this one! Hope you found it informative. It sounds like you’ve had a long and tough road of recovery! These procedures are never easy and sometimes there are things that are out of our control. Focus on what you can control. I think this tape could still be helpful for you. This is just a great product that can compliment a persons rehabilitation and aid them in a faster recovery! Hope that helps

Hello, this is Shadi from Lebanon. Can you help me? My mother had a knee replacement surgery a month and twenty days ago. She is 77 years old. She still will not be able to extend her leg and bend it 90 degrees. The size of the tumor is very small. I did exercises on the CPM machine, it bends 110 degrees. She will not bear it any longer. Does she need time to bend her knee? It is as if the knee is locked when it is folded. Can you answer it? Thank you

I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op TKR and didn't start PT until 10 days after surgery per my doctor orders. I'm pleased with my progress but my therapist has me freaked out about possibly needing a manipulation. My extension is at 0 and my flexsion is at 100 (with a lot of work). I sheded my walker about a week ago and don't have a limp expect 1st thing in the morning when I'm a little stiffer until I start moving. I was able to get on a stationary bike for 15 minutues with some warm up yesterday. I'm still on pain meds, which I'm reading should continue so it doesn't inhibit my exercising. Should I be concerned about my progress?

Thanks for stopping by to watch! In order to become a physical therapist you now have to complete a doctorate in physical therapy which allows one to use the Dr. abbreviation. This is different than a medical doctor MD.
The knee replacement procedure is a simple surgery but your body goes through so much learning how to reuse the new knee! And depending on previous health history and pain tolerance everyone experiences pain differently! Find what works best for you to manage your pain and stick to it! I often see the individuals who can control their pain the best have better outcomes! Wishing you the best!!
Renal insufficiency is a contraindication because the tape can help reduce swelling in the surgery leg which will result in moving fluid back into the rest of the body. In addition this mechanism can affect how your kidneys handle fluids. Always consult with your physician prior to use if you have any of the conditions listed under contraindications.
I‘m 8 months post-op with a RTKR and still feel a lot of “stiffness pain” down the front that seems like patellar tendonitis, and what feels like a ghost pain on the lateral side in back, possibly from the removal of my ACL. My scar is healed & looking good. Do your patients benefit from taping down the scar line to help with the patellar discomfort? Any suggestions for the pain in the area of my missing ACL? Thanks!
Thanks for stopping by to watch! The tape is typically used to help with swelling control and pain. So if you’re having pain over the anterior knee then yes I would try placing over the area and see how your pain feels. I would also recommend exploring some myofacial release techniques and scar massage over the incision. This also can provide some good pain relief if the skin around the knee is stiff and immobile! Hope this helps and thanks again for watching!
I had a bilateral knee surgery a year back and after 9months my right knee ee had an infection for which I m on antibiotics treatment .its almost getting better but my swelling on the right knee is still persist n my range of motion doesn't exceed to 85 Degree
So I have had multiple reconstructions. I have both hips replaced (Bermingham) Just had TKR. I would ask you this if you have such a wonderful product why are surgeons not on board with you? Their reputation is on the line yet this is not something they use? I am a walking injury and I could bang on all day I can promise you this anything you are offering is bullshit. The key to good recovery is to not push it keep swelling down and with exercise less is more. Tell me I am wrong?

Hello, if I understand you correctly, I don’t use the tape until after two weeks?
Thanks for stopping by to watch and taking the time to comment! Hope you found it helpful! You can actually start using the tape immediately after surgery! Wishing you the best of luck!!
I thought he said two weeks after all so so I’m glad you asked the question
I need this tape ASAP
Thanks for the suggestion. Do you put the tape on both sides of the knee or just the outer as shown?
Thanks for stopping by to watch and support the channel! I would recommend using it on both sides of the knee to address the swelling in the entire leg!
Dr. Mike,
I enjoyed your video.
Thanks,
Mark
Mark
@@markmurtha8081 absolutely! I wish you the best hang in there! Take care
My physical therapist used this tape several weeks after my knee replacement. Should one use it on their own?
How long after surgery should I apply tape ? thanks
This can easily be applied soon after surgery. Just go around your dressing! Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!!
My Dr or PT never mentioned this tape
Dr. Mike, Can this help while waiting to get surgery for pain or is it mainly for swelling? Thank you!
Yes absolutely sometimes I will use it on my patients who have osteoarthritis! Thanks for stopping by to watch! Wishing you the best!!
2 yrs for TKR knee cap numb and leg 6mm shorter...really good ..😢
I’m sorry you are disappointed.
Hey thanks for stopping by to watch and taking the time to comment! I would say that if you still struggle with pain and swelling then yes this can still be helpful for you! Wishing you a fast recovery!
Hiya im 7 weeks post partial knee replacement...Recovery going well, but find swelling can be quite bad if i stand for any length of time...Do you place the tape in the same place if your wound is now fine or do you put it as instructions in video??...Thanks in advance..👍
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! Great question! Once your incision is healed then you can start to place the tape over the top of the knee! Hope that helps!
Is it better to apply the narrow strips than keep tape wider?
I think it’s relative. I prefer narrow strips because then it allows you to spread the tape and cover more surface area. But I’m sure the wide strip would also work fine. If you do try both and notice a difference I would love to hear how it worked out for you! Thanks for watching and great question!
How soon after surgery should you use this
You can begin using this as soon as the day after surgery. It stays on pretty well so you may need to replace it every 4-5 days! Hope this helps and thanks again for watching!!
How do I use the tape before surgery
As mentioned in this video though it’s not the end all be all. You will still need to continue exercises to improve your flexibility and strength. This is just a great product that can compliment a persons rehabilitation and aid them in a faster recovery! Hope that helps
Thank you so much for your response. I live in Australia. Would this tape be available here if you know? Thank you again 🐕

Thank you
Thanks for stopping by to watch and taking the time to comment Shadi from Lebanon. Range of motion takes time and if she is at 110 degrees that’s very good! I encourage her to keep working and take a look at my surgery playlist! I have a few videos on effective exercises to restore flexibility after knee replacement! @@MovewithDrMike We went to the doctor and had the operation. He told her that the knee had become fibrous, and she could not bend it. What is fibrosis?
@@chadi6536 fibrosis is basically thickening of scar tissue and fascia that eventually restricts range of motion.
I had knee replacement 8 weeks ago. My ROM has been very slow my Quad muscles have been tight. I have pain on the medial side of the knee. I still have some swelling. I’m a MT so I have used KT tape. Looking for any suggestions

Can the tape be used after some months after knee replacement.eg I have done the operation 4 months ago.
Yes it can totally be used and quite effective even 4 months after surgery! Thank you for watching!
Wow that’s phenomenal news! Sounds like you’re doing amazing!! That’s great range of motion and I encourage to keep at it since the first 6 weeks are crucial! I am 5 weeks post op and am off all meds except an occasional dise of aleve. Lately, it is very painful all around the new knee (to the touch). Is it too late to try this? Also, why would this be contraindicated in kidney disease?

Is this for support or for healing or for blood circulation or for swelling
This is primarily for swelling, circulations and bruising to support the healing process!
Yes.
are PT's actually Doctors now?
Thanks for stopping by to watch! In order to become a physical therapist you now have to complete a doctorate in physical therapy which allows one to use the Dr. abbreviation. This is different than a medical doctor MD.
Why are knee replacments so painful? I have had both hips replaced and the pain really wasn't that strong. Healing was not long either.
Will this work at 9 months out?
Hey thanks for stopping by to watch! And yes this tape can work at any part of your rehab process! Hope this helps!!
Why is kidney disease listed?

Thanks for stopping by to watch! Im glad your knee is improving and I hope you’re able to regain all your mobility back! Wishing you the best!!
So was no explanation of how this works...
Be suspicious of someone with a man bun
So I have had multiple reconstructions. I have both hips replaced (Bermingham) Just had TKR. I would ask you this if you have such a wonderful product why are surgeons not on board with you? Their reputation is on the line yet this is not something they use? I am a walking injury and I could bang on all day I can promise you this anything you are offering is bullshit. The key to good recovery is to not push it keep swelling down and with exercise less is more. Tell me I am wrong?
Why do u have to cut it like that instead of 1 whole piece
Thanks for watching! Cutting the tape helps cover more surface area but you can also use the tape in one whole piece if it’s easier. Great question!
