Thank you for sharing these videos, I am 4 months post op, have 125 ROM but having a little difficulty coming down stairs, so now I will incorporate these exercises with what I am doing.
i just turned 55 this month ND on January 28th I'm having my TKR on my left knee. I've been watching all kinds of videos
How do you athletic killed me not to be able to walk 4 miles today
You're not a doctor dude. Walking - how much is ok, you didn't specify. I can manage my own medicine. Range of motion, we know man. Walker and cane usage, our surgeon and PT have provided us with this information. Knee collapsing, WHAT! The knee is stable and will not collapse, Quack.
Thanks for taking the time to watch this one! Wishing you the best Take care
Dr Mike my knee is still very stiff 3.5 months after surgery. The cycle is a little difficult to do because of the stiffness. Can I use the elliptical machines?
Congratulations on your recent procedure and thank you for taking the time to watch here! You can use the elliptical machines but you just have to consider that you will be essentially standing during that period so the knee might get fatigue with that specific activity. This is why the bike can be very help since you can sit (with the knee in a nonweightbearing position) and focuses on improving your range of motion. Even if you’re stiff to begin with you can work on slowly going forward and backward with half revolutions and then as you warm up you can try full. Also make sure the seat is high enough so that even if you do have stiffness you’ll still be able to participate with this exercise! Check out this video here where I go over these concepts ➡️ th-cam.com/video/2C7COHxEXc4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QXa4yhZbpvkedk4p
awesome..just then info I need.
Thanks for taking the time to watch here! Glad you found it helpful! I really appreciate the support!
Hi doc, I had total knee replacement 2 years ago and I still can't bend my knee, also my knee looks putruding
Most painful thing i ever did.
I needed this video because I am having this problem. My scar keeps getting wider and my walk is affected for some reason due to discomfort around the scar. I just learned I have deep scar around the incision!
Thank you for watching! I am a firm believer of soft tissue massage and I think it could make a significant difference on your pain and discomfort! Let me know how these work out for you!
Thanks Dr Mike, I'll be returning to the gym very soon! Am doing several of these now with modifications, of course!
This is great news! Thanks for watching this video and I’m so happy to hear how these exercises will help your recovery! Wishing you the absolute best! You got this!!
Thank you, I am soon to undergo partial kneek replacement, and your video has helped me in what I need to do
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment! I’m so happy to hear this was informative for you! Wishing you the best of luck!!

Thanks Dr. Mike, keep up with the outstanding work. I am 12 months post ACL reconstruction with semimembranosus tendon, medial mensicus menisectomy, lateral meniscus suture and debridement of the fracture of the artuculate cartilage of femur, patela and fibula. I have question regarding the goblet squat. Do i need to achieve first full range deep squat before adding weight (i.e. kettlebell, dumbell, etc.) or i can start adding weight even though i still can't achieve full range of motion squat?
@acekuzmanovski1583 I remember you! Thanks for stopping by to watch again! That is a great question! The answer is no! You can definitely start to add weight but the focus should be on correct form. Keeping the chest tall, weight close to your center of mass, driving the knees outward as your hips descend into the squat. If that means you need to focus on squatting down into a higher bench or box to maintain good technique this is okay. Adding some weight into the squat might also improve your knee range of motion. Start off light and focus on QUALITY! Take care of
@@MovewithDrMike thank you very much.
@ of course!!
I certainly want to return to the gym, but I'm dismayed by some of these exercises. My OT guy would definitely say they're too strenuous for a new knee! And you're also assuming that the other knee is in great shape. Certainly, this is meant for athletes, not the average gym-goer
I first want to say thank you for taking the time to watch this video! It’s nice to hear my viewers engage with the content and I think you bring up a great point. If you recently had surgery I agree these exercises can look intimidating and scary especially if you’re new to this piece of equipment. And I’m definitely not recommending everyone to start these exercises right after surgery! We all have a different fitness background and that’s why I cover the qualifications and how to know when you’re ready to begin this type of program. Additionally majority of these exercises are for beginners with the exception to the last two. Remember it’s not about how much weight you can lift but about how you can gradually add weight to each exercises to build strength in the knee. Hope that makes sense! Take care!

Golden information
Thank you for watching! I’m glad you found this information helpful!
Do you think the dead bug exercise would help with core strength even if the knee cannot act Correctly?
Yes I do believe that the dead bug exercises is a great exercise to build core strength but only if you complete it with the right technique. I see many people perform this exercise without the proper cues. Check out my video here where I go over the most common mistakes! HERE th-cam.com/video/t1g5MHVZm0A/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PZOTuKubj2Y38hkU
What about when surgery leg is slightly longer than the other and equality is not possible.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! That is a great question and in fact it's not uncommon for one to have a leg length discrepancy after a joint replacement. These tips and instructions would still apply to your situation. Do the best you can to normalize your walking pattern!
I cannot stress enough how grossly underrated your channel is!! I hope your channel blows up🎉🎉 soon!!
Thank you extremely for your kind words! Comments like these encourage me to keep making content that I am passionate about and that can truly help others! Thanks for your constant support and for taking the time to share this! Means so much to me!

Thank you for watching!!!
Thank you for all your informative videos! ❤I've learnt a lot 😅thank you again! God bless!!
Of course happy to help!
Thank you so much! I have been doing exercises with a therapist for five months but she never addresses walking. I can do exercises like crazy, but I can't walk. I am going to practice following your sensible advice.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this one! I’m so happy to hear these tips were helpful and I’m excited to hear how this video will improve your walking quality! Wishing you the best!
Same issue for me..PT doc never addressed way to walk!! Don't think he knows even though has aPHD!
I have exactly same history with my PHD "expert knee/hip" Therapist, 4 months & he also has offered no walking exercises/help even though I have asked several times! Glad to have your expertise!

Welcome from India! Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to ask this great question! I like to recommend inhaling on the way down as your spine elongates and exhale as you pull yourself up compressing all your core muscles! Great question!
@MovewithDrMike This video is worth £500 to me. You gave all the exercises concisely, not trying to be funny, not wasting my time and treating the viewer as someone with intelligence. Keep up the good work. A million thank you for being real and honest in sharing your knowledge. Thanks!
@ thanks for watching! Your words are so kind and I can’t thank you enough! I put in a lot of time and effort in my creations and it’s nice to hear people really enjoying the content! It means the world to hear these words! Really appreciate your input and so happy to hear these tips have been impactful for you!
This the TRUTH!
Thank you for watching!!
Thanks for this! I'm a 69 year old female. My previous walking schedule was from 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day. I'm almost 4 weeks from my surgery and I'm walking about 4,000 to 5,000 steps now. A little bit at a time!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your experience with us all! Sounds like you’re an avid walker and I think it’s fantastic how much you’ve been able to walk after surgery! Keep it up and always listen to your body! Wishing you the absolute BEST!
All these tips helped me Dr. Mike. Tried them today during my gym session and I felt the difference.
Thanks for watching! Glad to hear that these pull up instructions were helpful for you! I’m excited to hear how these tips help you increase your back strength and allow you to perform more reps!
@@MovewithDrMike Hi Dr Mike. I have been able to do pullups since I was about 10 years old, but in my 30s and having stuffed up my joints over the years with some jujitsu, I now find I get way too much pain in the elbow joints after just 1 or 2 reps (even though I have the strength). Weird part is I can do chin-ups (underhand grip) till kingdom come with no problem. Can you give me any tips for dealing with the elbow pain in the pronated grip? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this video, been dealing with tightness in my knee since my surgery. Which was in Aug. I’ve been doing nonstop therapy, it gets frustrating 😢
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you found this short video helpful! This is probably one of my most favorite exercises to help patients regain their knee mobility!
This is exactly what I need right now. 29 days post op left TKR. Man I feel so much stretch on my incision, I swear its just gonna bust open. Thanks for showing so many great options for flexion.
Thank you so much for watching! I’m happy to hear these exercises have been effective for you! And don’t worry because many of my patients say the exact same thing in regards to the stretch. This is a normal feeling. And it is important to have many different options for these stretches since every person has a different tolerance and experience to pain. Wishing you a smooth recovery! Take it one day at a time
Ive been following your exercises. TKR 8 weeks ago. I have a full range of 140° in my knee now! I can't believe how quickly my range of motion has improved. I had normal range prior to surgery so that is my goal. I used a cooling pressure sleeve "game ready" for 4 weeks. I didn't have any swelling at all!! It was the bedt device ever, and definitely recommend using one
I think the ‘Game Ready’ machines are amazing! Compression and ice can be so helpful after surgery! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to share your comments! So happy to hear your recovery is going well and you’re at full range of motion! Keep at it I believe in you! Best of luck
From Karnataka💛❤
Thanks for watching and for your support! It means a lot!!
Good video- all of these exercises were taught to me prior to hospital discharge and are in my post surgery rehab app- many were in my pre-hab too- but I really appreciate the explanation of the reason behind each exercise
Thanks for watching this one and most importantly for taking the time to share your comments! I really appreciate it! I am glad to hear that you’re familiar with these exercises. The earlier you can get started on them the better off you’ll be! Wishing you the best of luck in your recovery!
Oy%7e,y99
wow! I did all these mistakes.. I could be the postergirl for what not to do... I subscribed
Thanks for watching!! And don’t worry if you’ve been making these same mistakes because now you have the ability to perfect your technique. This particular exercise is NOT easy but with the right form and instructions you’ll be able to make great progress!!
Thank you so much for this exercise as I just had a knee replacement on Oct. 30th. I still have to bend my knee further back as I'm not on 90% yet. I've been going to PT to help me get my knee to full flexion. Sometimes it's still a little painful. I appreciate any exercise that will help me.😊
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching! Consistency is key!
@MovewithDrMike Thank you for your response.
Thanks a lot Doc. As just starting with pull up, i was doing wrong with my hand grip and elbow posture. Definitely going to implement in my workout. 💪🏋️♀️
Wow I’m so happy to hear that you learned some valuable tips in this video! There are many ways one can fail this exercise! Thanks for taking the time to watch! Really appreciate it! Let me know if there are any other exercises you’d like for me to cover!
Glad I found your channel and am a brand new subscriber. I have osteoporosis. Due to my doctor's orders, I need to do more strength training. I'm very appreciative of these tips on how to do a proper pull up. Thanks so much, and I look forward to seeing some of your other videos.
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate your comments as this does help my small channel reach a larger audience! Is there anything in particular related to strength training you’d like for me to go over in an upcoming video? I am always open to new ideas and want to answer questions for all of my viewers! Welcome to the channel!
@@MovewithDrMike Thanks for responding and asking the question about what I would like to see. Since I am brand new to your channel, I haven't seen any other videos yet that you have done. I'm in the middle of big winter storm preparation here in Central Kentucky. With that, I'm anticipating not being able to go to the gym for a few days. I just bought resistance bands, so if you've not done any videos with safe exercises using resistance bands for those with osteoporosis, I would appreciate content on that. Thanks!
@ Terrific welcome to the channel and when you find some time I’d highly recommend going through my playlists to see which videos might be most applicable for you! I do have a “Building Muscle with Resistance Bands” playlist so I would start there! I’ll continue to make content with resistance bands given how accessible this piece of equipment can be for many people at home! And I have a lot of great content in my ‘Strength FIX’ playlist along with bodyweight low impact workouts between 10-30 minutes long in my ‘Home Workouts’ playlist! Hope you find these videos helpful and wishing you the best! Take care !
@MovewithDrMike Perfect! Thank you so much.
Neck posture and core engagement, I focus too much on using my arms and have trouble around the lock out point - I've made great progress on the muscles around my shoulder blades but I'm still weak there when I dead hang because I strengthen using dumbbell rows on an incline bench and I never engage those muscles under my whole weight in the same verticle direction - thinking of buying bands so that I may fail these muscles properly across the whole ROM in the right direction and remove resistance until I'm doing full strong pullups
Thanks for watching! Dumbbell rows on an incline bench is one of my favorite exercises but I understand how much harder the vertical pulling with your bodyweight can be with pull-ups. Bands could definitely be helpful in helping you move through greater range of motion…I’m also a big fan of toe spot pull-ups to allow your feet to assist with the movement vs relying on bands. Building more back strength through ring rows is also very effective and a great skill to translate over to pull ups!
How long do you keep the KT tape on?
That’s a great question! Kinesiology tape (KT tape) is typically worn for 3 to 5 days. Thanks for watching!
I am 5 and a half months post tkr I have been walking without aid from 3 months, I do the exercises and ice occasionally though I still get stiffness some pain and swelling, let me know if that's ok😊thank you
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment! Hope you found this video helpful! Yes it’s totally normal to still deal with some stiffness even 6 months after surgery. For some people it can take up to 1 year for a full recovery. The best thing you can do for yourself is to continue to add in your stretches throughout the week and over time the stiffness will improve. Hang in there! Wishing you the best
My surgeon offered to do my other knee 5 months after my first, i decided to leave it at least a year and glad i did as i still have issues 10 months on, still get pain on the inner middle area of the knee, still find i can't get the degree of bend i expected and need, for example to ride a bicycle with confidence, the knee in general especially after a couple of days at work (manual job on feet all day 12 hour shifts) feels really horrible, to be honest although the unoperated knee is bone on bone i am put off having it done altogether, very disappointed to say the least.
Thanks for stopping by to watch and for taking the time to share your experience. I’m sorry to hear that you are disappointed with your knee. Don’t be discouraged though because some of my patients didn’t feel 100% recovered until after a year! This recovery can be long especially if you’re someone that has to continue to do manual work as an occupation. Wishing you the best!
Can you show stiff knee exercises thanks
Thank you for stopping by the channel to watch! Hope you find these videos helpful! Please take a look at my ‘Surgery’ playlist where I have created many videos on recovery after TKR and how to improve knee stiffness. You can watch it here ▶️ th-cam.com/play/PLJSZ9UiXuFy9FZCwQsAHdIuEXXqfH6sW3.html&si=AEGs0jONLL6pXIjb
Can you give advise now 6 weeks I was doing great, this morning I woke my knee is so stiff, I do my physio everyday... can you help with this problem, it hurt ls stiff and hear it click.. !!! I was at 95 and 105 at the physio 2 days ago but now this .... thanks heaps your exercises are so good I'm doing these with you thanks
Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment! This does help a small channel like myself grow! Consistency is the most important point after surgery! Your range of motion will vary from day to day based on how much swelling you’re dealing with. Walking and standing on the leg for long periods can also influence your swelling. Keep moving forward and continue to focus on daily range of motion. In the end this will be the best time spent. Take a look at my ‘Surgery’ playlist on my channel where you can find many videos on how to improve knee flexibility after surgery. Here it is ▶️ th-cam.com/play/PLJSZ9UiXuFy9FZCwQsAHdIuEXXqfH6sW3.html&si=AEGs0jONLL6pXIjb
@MovewithDrMike thanks heaps for the info happy new year to you and your family
Thankyou so much.. so so helpful..
I’m glad you enjoyed this one! Thank you for watching!!
I agree with everything, I had a total knee and recovered quickly, I was expecting the worst pain! My pain was very minimal, I did well with PT 7 weeks and was back to work in six weeks, I suffered with my knee fir 3 yrs because of my insurance, I was limping and my quality of life was getting bad, as soon as I got Medicare I had my surgery!
