It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. Of course, I'm pleased with the outcome and this Ryan’s th-cam.com/users/postUgkxGZedDTcDfgD7fG_uU4esfx_EgxzlY2_1 Plans was extremely useful to me as a guide.

The th-cam.com/users/postUgkxS-P9OAq3v4HNpPFqYFWNEq9A-E_PbZIN are indeed helpful, and the product is entirely promising if you are looking forward to building a single shed in your home It is entirely different from the other havoc packages that we usually see online and therefore it is such a package beyond expectations!

Pro tip from a carpenter that worked outside near the biggest temperate rainforest in America (Washington state),and now works on the wet side of Hawaii….to extend the life of your tape measures, every day wipe down your the blade of your tape with a rag blasted with wd-40….repels rust, helps keep grit out of the housing.

15:00 Pro tip for measuring between two posts. On one side measure and mark 10 inches from a post. Then flip the tape and measure from the other post to the mark. Add 10 in to that measurement.

Samurai carpenter put me on the idea of using a half-lap joint for handrail. Cut your pieces to extend past each other 1-2 inches then half lap over the corner post. Glue the joint and screw it to the post. Works best on outside corners.

another pro tip for doing those post top rails.. if you measure at the bottom of the posts rather then trying to hold the post plumb it will plumb the post by itself(90% of the time) also helps with what ever spindle or insert your using

For the concrete mixer, you slice it down the middle and then grab it buy the corners. Then flip and fold in half. Have someone ready with the sprayer to wet it down and stop the dust.

I'm building a deck. 1st time really doing something like this, so I'm pretty amateur. So far I've just done the footings and attached the ledger. I just want to go on record saying that measuring was easy, pouring concrete was easy, cutting things square was easy...but making things plumb and level was HARD. I've probably spent 10x the amount of time just trying to make things plumb and level; like it's really crazy how difficult it has been to make things plumb and level. I am probably doing something wrong, but like if you let Jamie talk for like 1 hour straight about making things plumb and level, I'd literally watch every second of it. Attaching the ledger to the rim joist of my 120 year old house was difficult to make plumb, it was difficult to make the sonotubes plumb and level, it was difficult to make the post-to-footing brackets level. Like for anyone watching these videos and thinking about building a deck, just be prepared that making it level and plumb is going to be your greatest challenge...in life

Laser makes it much less of a hassle. If you want to invest in one that is, they’re pricey but guaranteed you’d use it for many projects in the future. Dewalt and Milwaukee both make fantastic units. Again they’re an investment but a solid one. I’m sure your deck is going to be fantastic and congrats on taking on the project yourself 🤩👍

Miter joints open at the heel with redwood and fir, too. so what you do is you compensate ahead of time by opening the toe a bit to being with. When the heel shrinks you pound the two back together. If you use screws that part is easy. And the re-adjustment is so slight you can't notice it anywhere else.

On pressure treated 90 deg corners I use a 90 deg butt joint rather than 45 deg. They still open up but you end up with a straight openning rather than pie shaped openning and I think it looks better.

On our jobsites (years ago) we had a policy that everyone had to use the same brand of tape measure because, over a sixteen foot distance the difference in the "reading" could be sizable. We also worked around salt water and, when I found a good deal I would buy them in quantity.

I used to agree with this rule but the other day I realized my two different Milwaukee tapes disagree with each other! Granted I’m in the UK so one was imperial with metric and one was metric only. As an American this blew my mind. Only 1mm off (3/64 roughly). Sad day as it was the one I like that was wrong. I’m going to a same tape system on all trim and woodworking.

Happened to just have watched a bunch of tape reviews when I was shopping for a new one. DeWalt ended up winning overall, Craftsman actually got second, then FatMax. Lufkin did not perform well even though they look cool, I really wanted a reason to buy it but ended up not. They are also apparently off by an 1/16 to 1/8 right out of the gate so you may want to double check some measurements Ray!

I’m from Costa Rica and although we do have small concrete mixers most of the time for small jobs we do mix concrete on the floor, some times we lay a tarp underneath just to prevent the concrete from mixing with dirt, grass, etc. It’s a heck of a workout and if you don’t know what you are doing there could be chunks of unmixed cement when you pour the concrete but I think everyone should try it sometime

11:42 I can't speak for all Aussie wall and floor tilers but 99% of the time we still do a floor mix, you end up shifting the sand like five times before having it the the room you are working. You get really fit really quick I remember being an apprentice and the boss got a shop/commercial job and we were mixing like 5 tonne a day (11023 lb) for a week.
Protip: Speaking of tapes sometimes if you are going to be yelling measurements to a helper or you have one tape at a bench and one inside (if you don't wear a belt) and you have two different brands and even sometimes the same brand pull them out and check that they are the same I had one tape that was off by 3mm I kept scratching my head why the shower niche angle was short. I'd hate to do a big set out and be checking for square and that slight difference could cost big $ for a simple mistake.

I pick up totally unopened bag of concrete and lift up, set a little under halfway into opening of mixer. Use trowel as a knife to cut the top of bag off (not totally off, make a flap). Pull bag out, mix slides in. Super easy, clean, and bag remains in one piece for clean up. Premark a bucket with exact amount of water you like. 2 bags, 2 buckets of water etc... Makes a consistent consistency.

  • @straight_to_finish
    @straight_to_finish 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Typically, you can avoid a “hanger board” by using galvanized straps to hang the stringers to the rim joist BEFORE the finished skirting goes on (and account for the stringer cut accordingly). That foldable ruler is a essentially a “pinch stick”. Take 2 thin strips of wood that have a combined length that is longer than the width-place within the opening, mark the overlap, remove the strips, align the mark, and measure. You’ll get an exact measurement if you don’t own a folding ruler.

The other work around for a stair being added to a deck is having a closed-two-side stair where the treads are notched into the stringer (or sitting on blocking or a cut stringer) rather than the stringer being cut and losing the top. Having the stringer stay uncut gives it the strength to be fastened to the deck skirt board without any additional blocking needed. It does change your railing options a little bit but not a lot.

The reason that you would want the railing to come up is that there should be a 1-0 railing extension (flat abve deck) at the top of the rail and one tread depth on an angle to the lower side of the stair. This part of the railing at the bottom is then returned to the gound or an adjacent guardrail. These railing extensions are a requirement to meet many accessibility standards required in projects larger than a single family residence. If this is intended as a rental property than it may also be nice to consider other accessibility guidelines because this could become a liability for the owner.

The new Lufkins are not better, a few guys at work tried then out and only got a month or so out of them before they kinked really bad. I will stick with the Fatmax or the Milwaukee

I used a little Bosch laser measuring device for inside measurements when putting a tongue and groove porch ceiling in. It was very handy and always accurate especially when you would have the dumb end of the tape a long way from you.

I personally hate changing out my tape measure, father has had the same one for 15+ yrs...but when the numbers begin to wear, when it's difficult to read my 8ths and 16ths, I have to change mine.
I stepped away from Stanley while working drywall construction, because they struggled to contend with the gypsum dust of the site. Craftsman and Lufkin can take a better beating for sure, so the durability offsets the price.

I always have a little laser measure tool in my pouch, it makes live much easier, specially for inside measurements like in min. 15
