Here in japan we unlocked it and it's true form is at 296 hp with 300 torque @ 15 psi with more improved torque curve from factory. Full torque @ 1700 to 5400 rpm red lines @ 6300 rpm. Usdm spec are detuned do to regulation and fuel economy. Real jdm specs gets average 274-276 hp with the full 277 lbs torque from the fa24 plus we get a rear windshield wipers 😆. Subaru please don't sue me for this leak. 😆
Careful with your assumptions. People have been saying that for years, they are baffled when they blow up their engines. Note the tuner from Japan below, who cites small improvements. US-based tuners immediately jump to 18+ psi boost plans. We’ll see what they do with the STI

Do worry about the new motor it's been beefed up. You got mess around electric bypass system to get full jdm spec torque at 277 ft-lbs. I don't know why the US spec kept it at 258 ft-lbs. Stock USDM spec 271 hp and 258 torque . Stock JDM spec are 273 and 277 torque. Won't feel a difference trust me.
I think it’s funny that people simultaneously bitch about “only” making 271 hp AND fuel economy. Do you really not see the connection? Yeah, it’s true that the civic SI gets upper 30s fuel economy, but it also makes 70 less horsepower and it’s only front wheel drive. If that’s acceptable to you, then go right ahead and get the Civic SI. Or try to.
Golf R has much better fuel econ and despite what hp ratings say will hit 60mph 1.5s faster than wrx. The actual hp gap is way more than 45hp. It’s only slightly more expensive than wrx GT. So good econ and performance can go hand in hand.
hated the style when it was first shown but I don't mind it now. still don't love the rear bumper but it's not a deal breaker. car looks really good in red.
My Type R has it. Never been in a scenario where the car slowed down so much it stalled. I’m assuming if that happens you’re just simply not paying attention. Subaru is lazy and cheap. That’s your answer.
@@papa_pt the car will signal to the driver that the adaptive cruise control will be ending if the speed continues to decrease. After a specific low speed is hit the car automatically turns adaptive cruise control off.
Manuals don’t make realistic sense. Nobody seems to want them, the market is dying. It’s unfortunate, but why would Subaru or any car manufacture waste their time on manuals when everyone wants either automatics or CVTs?

Surprisingly good review! I think the cladding has people overlooking a lot of the improvements in the new gen WRX. I’m a big fan of the looks and can’t wait to see the upcoming STI. Along with the upcoming GR Corolla and Civic Type R, it’s a serious contender for my next daily.
The WRX has never been a gourgeous car. Most people have wanted it for the combination of the rally heritage, the AWD and the manual transmission. I like the current design very much. Perhaps I would have removed part of the cladding, but it is not a big deal for me and it helps to keep in mind that this is a rally car. Cheers.

I disagree. I think it makes it look and feel a bit more practical to handle rocks and suck. Seems to add functionality and practicality which is one thing I love about subaru in the first place.

Do not buy a suburu. New subarus are low quality. Boxes engines are ticking time bombs. If money is no object then buy one. Don't expect any new subaru to last more than 70k before things fall apart.
While Subaru's choice to keep the black plastic cladding unpainted is debatable, it's unlikely they chose to do so to save money. More likely it's an intentional styling decision to break up the visual bulk from the profile. It would have been less costly just to engineer the body and fender stampings all the way to the wheel well edge and use basic inner well lining. Then they wouldn't have to bother engineering 3D plastic cladding, working out the logistics of said cladding with a supplier, and bear the associated costs. The VW ID4 does the same. For example for reading and watching the WRX reviews negative that are actual negatives do start to pop up. For example a few reviewers said the car isn't faster than the previous gen, the redline is too low, the gearing doesn't work, could use more power etc. I think the issue is there is only so much you can get from driving a car for a day or two. Most issues won't present themselves til months or years later. Thats why I prefer long term test. They shouldn't call these first drives reviews. They are introductions.
I would be most interested in the base model with the least amount of weight and things that could interfere with the natural driving experience. The two screens look better to me than the one - having the HVAC controls have their own screen sounds nice. At least the new 2.4l engine will likely be much less stressed than the old. I'm not sure if the old 2.0l engines had issues when not modified, but I would be inclined to believe this engine will be even more reliable. Hopefully with less boost pressure used to make the same power less heat will be generated by the turbo. Mosf turbocharged performance cars' inability to handle track temperatures without mods has consistently held me back from buying one.
waiting for the 2023 model when those plastic wheel arches get axed, subaru should hire an italian designer or maybe steal one from Mazda in the very least. the inside also looks weak with that gigantic screen they should look at the inside of Audis for inspiration again hire that Italian/Euro dude for God's sake
Is this design really the best that Subaru could come up with? Several years of very cool concepts had me hopeful, but what a disappointment this WRX is. It is homely from every angle except the front end and the dash is cartoonish.
Subaru needs to up their game like other manufacturers. I have a 02' WRX with lots of mods. Subaru is not making me want to upgrade. My car has a upgraded engine and turbo. Better seats. Better suspension, wheels, tires and brakes. Upgraded stereo and elctronics. The WRX should be making 300hp by now and the STi should have a twin turbo flat 6 making 400hp. What is Subaru waiting on?
They're waiting on Toyota's battery strategy. Why develop a badass 300HP engine that will wreck their CAFE average and get bought by a handful of boy racers, when they can just recycle the power option from their family haulers until electric powerplants come along, making ICE engines look hilariously weak and outdated?
The WRX is still a bargain when compared to other similarly powered AWDs (if any). You must spend at least USD 10,000 more to get a more powerful AWD (the Golf R, to my knowledge). The fact of the matter is that both manual transmissions and gasoline engines are dissapearing. It is very sad for us, the driving enthusiasts, but it is good for the environment and it is innevitable. Cheers.

The cladding around the wheel arches makes the car look like it has massive gaps in the wheel well and the wheels look small. I don't know what Subaru was thinking. And although the WRX has rally heritage, it was not introduced as an offroad kind of vehicle. It was designed for the streets and had enjoyed a street reputation in the car enthusiast world. Even though it still has its rally roots, to slap massive cladding on something that never really had it is a misplay in my book. Subaru made a largely street performance car look like a WRX Outback. And they have a promo video showing one driving aggressively on a dirt road. What? Extremely few people would ever buy a WRX to drive it like this. This may be at the WRXs core but it doesn't represent what your average WRX owner would do. It's for the street and there's an entire after market industry dedicated to making this car more streetable, not off-road worthy. This car has more cladding on it than the Crosstrek and most "off-road" designed SUVs. I'll take a hard pass on this. Now, the new Civic Si has moved to the top of my list. Different car with a different purpose, I know. But at least it LOOKS like the kind of car it actually is.

you are comparing the wrx to a type r which are not even remotely close you cant compare a mercedes to a toyota corolla you compare a mercedes to a bmw or an audi. the new wrx needs some improvements but comparing it to a type r? you should compare the new sti to the type r when it comes out and wrx is more of a civic sport/si type comparison. plus its already confirmed that the new sti will not come with an auto. manual only.
@@thanoscraft7756 you didn’t follow, or you didn’t watch the whole video. He notes in the video that Subaru doesn’t include eyesight in their manual cars because it could, “stall the vehicle”. I noted that there are manufacturers using features like lane keep, emergency braking and adaptive cruise in manual cars, like the Type R. But if it sits better with you…the Si also has adaptive cruise with a manual…sooooo. In short, Subaru’s reasoning for not including eyesight and in turn excluding features like adaptive cruise is bogus. You can implement those features on a manual car.
100% of car reviews that I've watched don't like the look of this car, and yet somehow Subaru thought it looked good enough to put into production. Then they put the BRZ engine in it WITH A TURBO and it's no quicker than the BRZ. Hell, it's no quicker than an Outback Wilderness with the same motor. It's almost like they detuned the 2.4 slightly for this application. This is a FLOP. We can only hope that they'll boost the crap out of this engine for the upcoming STI. GIVE IT 400HP, SUBARU.
To summarize, as a three time owner….a lot of little improvements but enough let downs to make most of us upset. This engine in the bRZ without a turbo only makes about 40 less HP and thats pathetic…also considering its gotten slower since 2015 not faster. Subaru has dropped a massive ball here
Subaru knows more than half thier wrx buyers going to mod/tune. Fa24 271 hp at 12psi, thats mad under tuned even for a subbie. Last fa20 engine stock was runing close to 18psi haha So i think unlesss your keeping a subbie stock the numbers are kinda meaningless in my opinion.

The side plastic cladding is not terrible but the rear of the car is "butt" ugly to me. Guess the Subaru stylists are "ass" men.😉

Ugly, slow and cheap. Got it. But if you want an AWD with style you’ll have to pay Audi prices so I guess it’s better to convince yourself it’s not “that bad” instead of recognizing that the cost of cheap AWD performance is having to be seen in that fugly thing.

you are comparing the wrx to a type r which are not even remotely close you cant compare a mercedes to a toyota corolla you compare a mercedes to a bmw or an audi. the new wrx needs some improvements but comparing it to a type r? you should compare the new sti to the type r when it comes out and wrx is more of a civic sport/si type comparison. plus its already confirmed that the new sti will not come with an auto. manual only.

He notes in the video that Subaru doesn’t include eyesight in their manual cars because it could, “stall the vehicle”. I noted that there are manufacturers using features like lane keep, emergency braking and adaptive cruise in manual cars, like the Type R. But if it sits better with you…the Si also has adaptive cruise with a manual…sooooo.
In short, Subaru’s reasoning for not including eyesight and in turn excluding features like adaptive cruise is bogus. You can implement those features on a manual car.

You are right on the WRX part but the type R is FWD. Thats garbage to me, I guess depends how you look at it.
Subaru has a lot less money for R&D than Honda does. That’s a pretty legitimate reason, if you know anything about business and manufacturing.
100% of car reviews that I've watched don't like the look of this car, and yet somehow Subaru thought it looked good enough to put into production. Then they put the BRZ engine in it WITH A TURBO and it's no quicker than the BRZ. Hell, it's no quicker than an Outback Wilderness with the same motor. It's almost like they detuned the 2.4 slightly for this application. This is a FLOP.
We can only hope that they'll boost the crap out of this engine for the upcoming STI. GIVE IT 400HP, SUBARU.
It weighs a LOT more than a BRZ, and I don’t believe you about the Outback Wilderness being quicker.
To summarize, as a three time owner….a lot of little improvements but enough let downs to make most of us upset. This engine in the bRZ without a turbo only makes about 40 less HP and thats pathetic…also considering its gotten slower since 2015 not faster. Subaru has dropped a massive ball here
Subaru knows more than half thier wrx buyers going to mod/tune. Fa24 271 hp at 12psi, thats mad under tuned even for a subbie. Last fa20 engine stock was runing close to 18psi haha So i think unlesss your keeping a subbie stock the numbers are kinda meaningless in my opinion.

@@heatice77 mk7 gti 220hp R 292, mk8 gti 240 R 310, St 280hp, evo 290hp, type r 310hp previous gen of those cars had less than 300hp, ford RS 350hp being the exception all cars in their segment dont have big factory hp numbers...so why would u expect the wrx too? Given the competitors its a fair hp amount.
