Looks like a great new update for the WRX. I had a 2017 STI and enjoyed the driving experience and track duty. I can't wait to see what Subaru is doing for the STI.
I know a lot of people are half and half on the exterior with all the cladding but remember this was always supposed to be a sporty car with rally roots. Its meant for the track and the dirt roads. The winding curves and the mountain roads to the slopes not just a street car. Trust me I much rather have the plastic cladding that I don't mind getting dirty vs taking a GTI or Civic Si on a mountain road and tearing up all the low mounted painted trim panels.
I personally hate the cladding but not because it's there. I hate it because it's excessive. The amount on the rear of the car is absolutely abysmal. Outside of that, it's true that the WRX has an rally history, but when it made its US debut in 2014, it did not have any kind of cladding like this. The car was marketed to be a true street-performance car that just happen to have a rally capability. That's how Subaru designed it. So to say that the cladding gives it some kind of rally-inspired look for someone to take off road kind of defeats the original intent of why the WRX came to the US market. A vast majority of people are not going to take this vehicle off-road, despite its heritage. It's built for the the streets first! It's always been like that and that's why so many people don't like how it looks. It's one thing to take a plain Subaru Imprezza or old Legacy wagon and turn it into more "off-road" worthy vehicles. We now call them Crosstreks and Outbacks and they are massively popular. For the Imprezza sedan, Subaru decided to turn it into a WRX/STi performance car and that was successful as well. So the mindset is that, again, despite the rally heritage, the WRX is a street car and it missed the mark by trying to look "off-roady." My guess is that the 2% of those who will buy this to drive off-road will be happy. I, for one, have now put the Si at the top of my list for buying next year.

I'll give them credit, the curb weight hasn't really increased since the blobeye.. But when the blob eye was new the mustang made 20more hp and weighed more.. Now the mustang would eat this even in base trim.. Without driving it, I'd guess in comparison it would feel slow.

The wrx is supposed to be old school. It's not supposed to be a big car. I still don't like the stupid plastic body arches and bumpers. And they got rid of the interesting bits from the old one like the wrx blade near the front wheel and the large painted side skirts. The only thing I like about this new one is the interior, and even then I don't like the vertical screen.
While Subaru's choice to keep the black plastic cladding unpainted is debatable, it's unlikely they chose to do so to save money. More likely it's an intentional styling decision to break up the visual bulk from the profile. It would have been less costly just to engineer the body and fender stampings all the way to the wheel well edge and use basic inner well lining. Then they wouldn't have to bother engineering 3D plastic cladding, working out the logistics of said cladding with a supplier, and bear the associated costs. The VW ID4 does the same. I'm looking to buy a performance awd cuv. I test drove an RDX tech I've really like the shawd on wet and now I see that new thing. Subaru should bring the wrx wagon in America, I'd buy one. WRX wagon manual or spt with ride control it would outsell the outback!
Road at 2:03 looks too dangerous; I see at 5:45 they put in a wall on the side of the road for people who don't want to fall over the cliff. Are the features about power and handling relevant to any person who uses a car to drive in city/suburb/interstate etc.
I don't dislike it overall but the Civic Si is maybe a bit more appealing with its sweet shifter with rev-matching, nicer interior, way better fuel economy, no oddball looks, more safety features compared the the manual WRX and more features overall for the money (in Canadian version).
It took years for Toyota to fix the Subaru mess that they bought from GM . Having said that, i would still go with Hyundai/Kia N and N- line. much better, longer warranties and cost much less to buy. The use by Subaru of a CVT and takata airbags in the wrx and sti models eliminate them as buys in my opinion. 🧐🤔😉

Okay, elitist. Not everyone can afford an electric and they don't make sense yet for most people. If this were electric, it would cost twice as much. Moreover, building EVs is far from carbon neutral and much of the country gets its electricity from coal fired plants (30 percent of US electricity production).
