How to make a shield from old pallets (a medieval looking round shield)

  • Here's quick, fun project where I'll take you through the steps of making a medieval style shield from pallet wood. This will be a little different from my usual projects, if you're expecting a lot of forging this is NOT the video. Instead I'm going a different direction and building shield from (mostly) wood scraps to go with the battle axe we made last week.
    Is this a viking shield? Medieval shield? Fantasy shield? You decide!
    Tools include: angle grinder, belt sander, metal file, blow torch, spray paint, craftsman jigsaw and more. When we're done we'll have fully functional shield--may be a little light for actual medieval warfare, but it's definitely not a toy...er...maybe kind of toy. But still quite sturdy.
    This is the type of build that might be useful for a Halloween costume party or maybe a short video project or just for fun in the backyard.
    Follow along and make this shield, or just watch and enjoy the show. Either way, thanks for joining me and I hope you have a wonderful day. Cheers!

    Looks pretty good. You reminded me how as a kid I built shields in the backyard out of old wood like that and have sword fights (with sticks) with friends. So much fun.

    That's a nice project, as a kid I would have wet myself if my dad had made me one. You could use just a piece of plywood, thinner if just for the kids, & score parallel grooves for the "plank" effect.
    Real ones were made from poplar, lime or alder(I think) wood rather than any other, because they were both light & resisted splitting along the grain well when hit. That was a key factor. The planks were made to fit precisely together & then butt glued with casein(milk protein) glue. Steel bosses are available from many replica weapon sellers & most common were central handgrips, made by cutting a hole behind where the boss goes (That's why the boss is used-to cover that hole & your hand). then a strip if iron or wood is nailed across the back of the shield, often wrapped at the grip with leather or cloth for the grip & also adds a little reinforcement to the shield. Sometimes they were left with faces just painted, sometimes the faces were covered in leather or cloth(stout canvas) before painting. Then usually a reinforcing rim of rawhide or metal strip was either nailed or sewn around the edge. Most would also have a longer carrying strap so the shield could be slung over the shoulder across the back for easy carriage. Diameters were generally 24 to 32 inches. the larer they are, the more they get in the way of the user's melee weapons.
    Modern reinactors cheat a bit by using very small(short) carpet tacks to fix the rawhide(Rawhide needs to be soaked & pliable before applying. As it dries it becomes hard like tough plastic & shrinks holding the shield edges tightly together.), but in old times it would have been sewn on with stout twine or leather thong. They often use plywood instead of planks as it's cheaper, readily available, doesn't need to be special wood as the cross-ply layers reduce splintering & is pretty tough. 9mm or 12mm is pretty common. It can be lightly scored in parallel lines(not too deep as plank ones would have barely visible joints so they fitted nicely for good strong glued joints).
    Hope that helps anyone interested.

      backyardbladesmith Thanks! I have an uncle who was actually injured pretty badly when some flammable residue ignited in a tank he was welding on. This happened about 30 years ago, but it’s the kind of thing that sticks with you when you’re a kid. Truthfully, I’m pretty sure these little propane cylinders pose a lot less risk than that, but it’s always good to keep in mind. Thanks again!

    Nicely done. A good quick shield. Though it might be more comfortable with a center hole behind the boss, gives room for the hand.

      @bobbyhempel1513 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pallets are not hard at all to take apart all you need is a hammer and a flat bar I can bust down a typical pallet in about 10 minutes and that's taking it slow being careful not to break any of the wood

    hi i have a question... what is the fracture toughness of the wood? i search the approximation in KJ/m2 or in MPa in order to understand what kind of arrow a shield of wood can stop... thanks

    • @2bingtim
      @2bingtim 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In real shields they chose poplar, lime or alder as other woods split too easily when hit, though the ply backing would help in this. They also covered or painted the shields to avoid showing the plank joints, as these were obvious points of weakness to exploit, though real plank built shieldsd would have very neat, tight joints so they fitted together as strong as they could. I'd expect pallets are made from some softwood, pine or the like, splitting fairly easily.
