Hi everyone, this time I made a Viking shield! Please leave a like if you enjoy the video. This is not a historical copy as you can see, but anyway it was quite fun to build.
@@GarageKnight Yup! The Viking Runic language is named Futhark after the first 7 runes in their alphabet, those being the letters in the name Futhark. I learned Elder Futhark, but there were several iterations after it.
Fascinating, was it hard to learn? Now that you mentioned it, I checked the wiki article of it, I thought it was a Scandinavian thing but it seems it was originally used by Germanic tribes. I love history so it's nice to find out these kind of things.
I thought it would take people longer to notice. The translation I mean. Damn that backwards S, didn't notice it myself... Anyway thank you very much and nice to hear you liked it!
@@GarageKnight Also: "th" has it's own rune celled Thurisaz and "ng" has the rune Ingwaz. But since it doesn't mean anything I guess it doesn't matter!
Than means... "nice work" right...? Thank you! And that's a great idea! I have a helmet coming up next, hope to finish it soon, but I will make more shields in the future and kite shield is a good option!
Do you mean the carbon content or something else? If you google "mild steel sheet" you'll find the product that I used to make the rim (and the shield boss btw). The rim is from 1,5 mm thick sheet. Mild steel has a variety of uses and it's carbon content is quite low so it's easy to shape. I hope I understood your question correctly
Yeah metal is easier to get and probably cheaper too :P and I think I saw something like this in some game so I wanted to test it how it could be made. Ja juu aksentti paljastaa aina ;)
Great video, but i have some questions, is two parts "boss" or "umbo" "historically correct"? .. and the metal reinforcing edge is also "historically correct" ???. and the final WEIGHT of that shield is how much ??? ... the thickness of the shield in the middle and at the edges? ... I know there are many questions ... I already made myself a shield and I only had those difficulties because of my questions. Thanks in advance . Receive a greeting and a hug from a Peruvian resident in Brazil.
Hi, to be honest this is not very historically correct. Historically the boss was made from one piece by raising metal, but that requires heat (forge etc.) which I don't have. There are some evidence of metal edges, but not very much. So not really historical. Weight is about 5 kg which is historical. It's 1 cm thick and made of plywood, so it's the same thickness in every part. Thank you for your comment!

What was the tool you used to make the plywood look like planks
@@kbob5427 it was a chisel
"These Mean Nothing" Glad my study of Elder Futhark is working for me!
So that's what these runes are called, learned something new, thanks!

@Joe Becker There's some spelling mistakes like commented below but yes that's what it says
The "these" on the sheild are done WRONG! It's þ NOT t h........ its þm..
I just started making a shield from an old pallet. This is awesome. I love this. Im totally going to try one like it.
Thank you very much! It's a simple but fun project and you can always make some decorations of your own
Way fun to watch, good music! Off to make my own shield!
Thank you and have fun!
Great instructional video thanks for the tips and advice, best of luck with future videos!
Thank you!
Mawawawa these mean nothing ...
awesome work ,specially for the iron border and the boss. just what i was missing for my new years disguise.
Sounds awesome! Thank you and happy holidays!
Excellent video. Some great ideas. Many thanks for sharing
Very nice build looks great,
And it gave me a good chuckle when i read " These Mean Nothing "
edit: the S is backwards

@@KingSebbz It was written by a illiterate and drunken berserker who was told by Loki that it means "a very nice shield"
@@GarageKnight That lil bastard!
Nice work!!😉
@@GarageKnight Damn gods always messing with mortal lives
That's really cool!! I am thinking about making a shield.
Thank you! Well this is quite easy shield to start with and you can replace the metal rim with something easier if you want
Would love to see you making a reinforced (like this one) kiteshield next!

@@GarageKnight it sure does!!
Looking forward to the helmet then and hope to see a kiteshield later on!
Where do you purchase that edging? Does anyone has an Amazon or Etsy link?
What edging do you mean? If you mean steel, I buy it from a local shop but there's many online options too
@@GarageKnight Yep! The steel trim on the outside of the shield.
I don't know if you can buy it from anywhere, I made it from steel sheets as shown in the video
This was very well made. Looks very sturdy. Nice shield, good job!
Glad to hear you liked it, thank you very much! I think it's quite sturdy for a wooden shield
This is awesome man
Thank you!
That's a beautiful shield!
Thank you very much!
What did you use to make the plank lines? Pretty cool idea.
Thanks! I used a V-shaped chisel
Wow, just wow. May I ask where do you source the metal parts from?
I buy them from a local steel supplier. But there are online shops too, amazon, ebay etc. But easiest way is to find some local store. And thank you!
Great vid with great ideas and tips! Please keep it up!
Thank you! Very nice to hear you liked it. I have another Viking thing under work and lot of other ideas
Incredible, thank you for sharing! I'd love to try this
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked it
What type of metal did you use for the rim? I have made several Shields but none with an actual metal rim. Amazing Shield
Thank you glad to hear you liked it! The metal is just basic mild steel that I use in my other projects too
@@GarageKnight okay awesome. I was kind of inquiring about what type of metal is it intended for. It would better help my search process

That's a nice shield! Really like the editing too!
Thanks, glad to hear it!
What is the diameter of the steel boss?
It's 20 cm, so a bit larger than historically.
Beautiful
Thank you!
it's look awesome! Thank you for video
You're welcome and thank you!
Como sempre ótimo vídeo, parabéns pelo trabalho. Grande abraço
Thanks man, glad to hear you liked it!
Did you use a metal rim because you couldn't find rawhide? Arvasin aksentista, et oot suomalainen ;)

can u make MF DOOM's mask next
Ever since I saw the mask in movie "Gladiator" I thought it was pretty cool, so maybe I will try it at some point
"These Mean Nothing" in Runes - hehehe
Just to cause confusion in battlefield
@@GarageKnight Heh. I live in Frankfurt and will be going to Hedeby as soon as the restrictions have lifted.
@@spudeleven5124 The viking museum? I too hope this situation ends soon
@@GarageKnight Yes. It's a long way from here, up North near Kiel.
I checked their website, seems like an interesting place
These Mean Nothing!!! Lmfaoooooooo
Yeah lol
Was that duck tape
I don't know the exact name for it, but it's some kind of vinyl tape.
"These mean nothing" lmao
Just what a illiterate viking would write lol
