Douglas' ability to construct a sentence and introduce subclauses without confusing the audience is out of this world. 🌌

An amazing conversation.I think that the way Douglas has found to do this is to speak slowly. Sometimes we get it wrong, we think that speaking fast means being assertive but we loose so much precision this way.

I think it says something deeply shameful of the Western Democracies that Ayann Hirsi Ali is not an icon (like Nelson Mandela or MLK) amongst our various political and media classes. Hirsi Ali an ICON of reason and democracy to me - but then I'm a 'low information', 'deplorable' ordinary citizen-voter. We are the despised people these days.

And yet our young men seem impressed with emotional irrational screeches. Great interview because it’s a different one for Douglas, here he explores his thoughts (never seen him use eye accessing patterns before) rather than staring into the screen in debate mode. Nice liked it Thankyou (any chance of podcasts) would love to hear from you Mihail

A contradiction of our time: Under the zeitgeist of _multiculturalism,_ the world is rapidly becoming _less_ diverse. We harvest the diversity that emerged over millennia, without asking ourselves how this diversity came to be, or what connecting and mixing cultures does to diversity over time. Unless we want our children to grow up in a global monoculture, we better think seriously about how we can preserve the diversity we have and what conditions are necessary for diversity to grow.

I prefer to go by his actions and words rather than what you think he is thinking. I do not believe in God but I am prepared to acknowledge some basic values which have been seen for Millenia as Christian values, that is justice and charity. The institutions of Christian Churches have frequently failed to uphold their own basic values, that does not make the values bad or unworthy of espousing. Christianity acquired much “baggage” and that is what many of us want to dispense with, but there are nuggets worth keeping.

    • @twntwrs
      @twntwrs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@amandapurdy8543 Not sure what you mean when you say "what you think he's thinking". He can in fact be heard in lectures, debates, conversations and interviews proffering Christianity as his silver bullet to the current malaise in general and the encroachment of Islam in Europe in particular.
Yes, quite right: " *seen* *as* Christian values". Because there is nothing uniquely Christian about them - they are humanist values that can be observed in cultures oblivious to Christianity; a form thereof even among other animals.
Christianity itself meanwhile is predicated on an abomination: the torture to death of an innocent man in expiation of the sins of everyone who believes this. The closer you look at it the more absurd it becomes yet Christians cling to this either oblivious, in denial or indifferent to its horror.
Christianity i.e. religion *is* the baggage. Keeping the Nuggets mired in a dung heap is not their ideal presentation and not necessary.

It feels like you are assuming something about what he believes that I have not heard in the talks and books I have seen read

Great conversation. However, Douglas' optimism regarding what Eastern Europe has to say based on its history is somewhat misplaced because the Catholic Church has become so compromised and seen as clearly corrupt, especially in Poland, and is massively losing its following, just as in Ireland. In Poland, the Solidarity Generation that led to the fall of Communism is old and rapidly dying off, while a national populist party, made up mainly of careerists and provincial opportunists, is built in the image of the old Communist Party but with the Polish Church replacing Moscow as its ideological master. Similar phenomena, but with less Church guidance, are evident in all the former Soviet satellites, while the former Soviet republics, with a few exceptions, are corrupt police states with Presidents-for-life. Note, also, that the spark for Poland's transformation came from the Left, in the form of the Committee for the Defence of Workers (KOR), not so much from the Right, and the Church only became powerful just before Martial Law was declared in late 1981, and during the years of repression which followed. The Left in Poland's parliament may in fact form an effective coalition with the majority populists, since both have very similar economic policies, which would be considered socialist in the West but are really crony state capitalist. The progressive left of the street is unfortunately imbibing Wokeness in a big way, accentuating the culture war, which is just as acute in Poland as in the West. The residue of peasant serfdom, which was abolished in Poland by occupying powers only in the mid-19th century, fills the role of the legacy of Black slavery in the Anglosphere.

I don’t think you realise it’s the 21st century and your question is nonsensical and ignorant. Douglas Murray is openly gay but is also mindful of the spiritual and cultural values of Christianity. The two are no longer in the contradiction you seem to believe they still are. But I suspect it’s no use talking to you about that because you don’t strike me as someone who asks a question because he is interested in the topic and genuinely wants an honest debate, but rather as someone who expects to be right and his righteousness to be acknowledged, so I won’t waste my time.

It wasn't just bad, it was horrible. I'm also from Romania, like Mihail, I was 11 when communism fell, and some things are still just etched in my brain. Precisely because I was little and for a while, I couldn't understand why we had to spend HOURS waiting to get our meat ration (I think it was 2 pounds/month/person), or vegetable oil ration, or whatever ration - most things were rationed. Not all- you could always find mustard, for instance, and you could buy as much of it as you wanted.
News like "they'll bring meat", "they brought oil" etc. used to spread like fire :)))) I hated the most when the sale started, because people would start pushing and shoving each other, and being smaller, I was scared of being crushed . My father had to rescue a girl from a vinegar (if I remember correctly) queue - she fell and people were stamping on her, because they were also caught in the crush and the ones pushing them couldn't see properly what was happening. She started screaming, and my father, who was a very strong man, managed to push and shove the others and get her out.
Trivia: you could only find oranges close to the winter holidays. In good years, you could also find bananas and Chinese chocolate. Queues were huge, of course.
Still, I was lucky only facing food shortage: I lived in an area where a lot of military personnel lived (there was a Military Academy nearby), so we rarely faced other shortages, like heating or electricity. And we almost always had good methane gas pressure. But a cousin of my mother, for instance, who lived in a different area, she had to cook after 10 pm, if I remember correctly (could've been 8 PM, can't remember that well), because that's when the 2 hours or so of good methane pressure would allow her to properly use the stove .
Also, having to be aware that there were things your parents might say that you really really had not to say to others was a little stressful. I once said something political in the second grade, something like down with socialism (I was about 7 or 8) and the other children told the teacher. I was very lucky - I just got a small beating in front of the class from the teacher but she didn't report it further. I had a few more minor rebellions - I once refused to go do (mandatory) volunteer work because the activity seemed stupid (we had to collect a certain amount of chestnuts for some reason) - my parents were called to school and I had my Good Behavior score reduced (I think I got a 7/10). Also, I once ran away from a patriotic filming - the idea was that they would make a patriotic video with people of all ages singing about the greatness of Ceausescu and the Golden Communist Age for the usual tv propaganda. But the filming delayed for hours, it was cold and the uniforms were not enough to keep us warm so I ran away :)) There were some young soldiers guarding the perimeter of the square who told me that hey, I wasn't allowed to leave, but I started to whine that I am tired and cold, I was on the verge of tears, so they let me go - they were just some young boys in mandatory military service. Again, a berating and a small beating from teachers, parents called to school etc.
Generally speaking, communist children are quite disciplined - I only had a few slips during my 5 years before communism fell, and long after, a girl I was friends with in school told me I seemed very rebellious to her. I would've probably ended up in jail for being an enemy of the people or in a psychiatric hospital - because it wasn't always jail, sometimes, people who couldn't recognize the benefits of communism were declared insane and locked up in psychiatric institutions.

Oh really Douglas? The intention to go into Iraq and destroy a country on false pretences, who had nothing to do with 9/11 was good, was it? killing, torturing and displacing millions of people and children, Whilst leaving Saudi, the country who produced most of the 9/11 terrorists alone, was justified?
I'm a fan of your writing and views, generally, but I think you ought to give this one some serious thought.
Iraq is still suffering from the aftermath of years of embargo, followed by unjustified wars and American policies. The Americans should've stayed there and completed the job they started, instead they opened up the country to incompetent looters, Iran and terrorists.

    • @twntwrs

Some very good points here but I would just add, and this comports well with your point "Americans should have stayed and finished the job", GHW Bush should have stayed and finished the job back when it was actually conceivably finishable! The justification *was* there that time, the military momentum and competency were there, the International Community's support was there; in short a colossal unforced error and missed opportunity.
