    You could very likely sell that pistol magazine for what you paid for the scooters.
    Everyone else calls those scooters. A moped tends to look more like a bicycle and has pedals like a bicycle. A moped would be manually pedaled in addition to applying throttle to accelerate up to speed or go up hills and then the engine keeps you cruising.

    • @BeamBinge

      Mopeds have pedals but can start any way needed, and pedaling doesn't really benefit them unless they are incredibly underpowered. (Source: I have a few incl. a Tomos LX)
      It makes them technically bikes-with-engines, but a scooter is a moped, as far as a lot of laws are concerned. ("Something under 50cc with top speed of 35mph--most of the time")

    • @fiftyracer192
      @fiftyracer192 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A moped in most places defines a bike with a engine of 50cc and a max speed of 30mph. The law hasn't required pedals since the 70s in most places. And the common meaning of the word has changed, words can change over time.

    • @andrewgee241
      @andrewgee241 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True that actual mopeds had pedals but many state laws never changed to reflect the market shift from mopeds to scooters. In Virginia scooters with 50cc engines are referred to in state law as mopeds.

    Ive been messing with cheap Chinese scooters for years and I can 100% tell you that blue CDI is garbage. They are sold as "performance" but all they do is leave you stranded. The best CDI you can get is from a Yamaha Zuma 50. In fact all the zuma parts are considerable upgrades over anything you will find on these. But honestly any stock CDI is better than those blue boxes. Also you can get more speed out of these by removing the little plastic bushing that hides behind the variator (CVT clutch). Just remove the belt cover and remove the bolt holding the variator on the engine. Only half will come off. then slip the belt off and you will find a little platic ring that prevents the CVT from fully opening, which restricts the speed by limiting its travel. You should get over 40mph after removing it. I love the content! been watching for over 6 years!

    I got into Chinese scooters three years ago and I've built and sold a couple dozen in that time. The cheapest I've ever bought was $12.50(got two for $25). Most of them are sold as "blown up" or needing an engine, but 99% of the time the main problem is tight valves. And bad fuel lines.
    Also, the Jonway is a 50, Charles' looks like a 150+(considered a motorcycle not a scooter), and I'm not sure on Ike's, but it looks like it has more pep than a 50

      A scooter can have an engine capacity ranging from 50cc to 650cc, It is the fact that the engine & transmission are mounted as part of rear suspension arm, in a well frame, that classifies a bike as a scooter.
      If the engine is midframe mounted, with a Carden shaft or drive chain to the rear wheel, in a well frame, it is classified as a step through motorcycle (Honda Cub,, Super Cub, etc.). If the step through motorcycle has body panelling, covering it,, then it is classified as an enclosed motorcycle (Triumph Tina, CZ 175-501, etc.).

    Here in South Carolina we call those mopeds "licker sickles". Those are what the drunks ride when they have lost their drivers license because of DWI's. The curse of the highway as you run up on them so quickly. Also you get stuck behind them in opposing traffic. Often not maintained with no lights at night. Great for buzzing around a trailer park or crack house complex.

    I owned a scooter just like Ike's back in high school. Had the same streamline shape, chrome, and wide sweeping handle bars. It had a 125cc engine. it was my first vehicle. Bought it used for $150 and rode it for three years. I put over 5000 miles on that scooter. I modified it for power and looks. Bigger carb jets and a sick under glow RGB body light kit. The top speed was 60 mph. I sold it when I bought a full size motorcycle. Kinda wish I kept it with gas reaching $7.00 a gallon in Socal. The scooter got 70 MPG. been watching you guys for a while now and enjoying it very much keep up the good work, what you guys got a hold of in this episode are called scooters, a moped is a very specific vehicle, it has to have pedals has to be under 50cc, and I believe the tires have to be at least 17 in. the thing was the under 50cc and limited to 35 mph has to do with having a motorcycle license. :-)

    • @07TriggerHappy
      @07TriggerHappy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mopeds can have 14 or 16in tires, but otherwise yes. Speed is also dependent on the state you’re in. Ohio can’t be above 20mph.

    • @zBrainlezz
      @zBrainlezz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, various states have different maximum speed laws for these things... 17MPH is the slowest I've heard of, 30MPH is the quickest. Also, can confirm, at least in California, it has to have pedals to be legally considered a moped.

    • @Tacritania
      @Tacritania 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It varies a lot around the world too. Up here in Scandinavia, it's 49cc max and limited to 45kph (28mph) but you can get the license as a 16yo for very little money. The moped/scooter definition is hazy here, everything is called a moped in this class whether it looks like a scooter or a superbike, manual/cvt etc etc.

    Moped & 50cc speed restrictions globally:
    22 MPH = Holland
    25 MPH = Some US states
    30 MPH = UK, EU & some US states
    The 30 MPH 50cc speed restriction was caused by the Puch versus Kreidler "Moped Speed War" of the 1970''s These Austrian 50cc motorcycle manufacturers competed against each other to produce the world's fastest 16er 50cc moped, creating bikes with top speeds that today's 50cc scooter riding kids can only BS about achieving.
    Puch came out with the 72 MPH Grand Prix. Kreidler came out with the 80 MPH Florette. Numerous governments looked on in horror, then passed killjoy legislation to restrict 16er mopeds to 30 MPH.

    • @zBrainlezz
      @zBrainlezz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting, I didn't know this before. I have a Kreidler 50cc from 1979... Unfortunately it's been sitting around for a while due to a horrendous rod knock, and the necessary replacement parts are extremely expensive, so I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to ride it again. :(
      Oh, and also, I believe a few US states have 20MPH speed laws for those things, and at one time a few even had 17MPH restrictions (not sure if those are still so stringent).

    Just bought a 50cc scooter and it's titled and tagged as a motorized bicycle. But plan on a big bore kit, "hot cam", high performance ignition and high performance exhaust. Gotta love these Chinese specials. I got a Hella of a deal on my brand new Teyin scooter

    Those blue "racing" cdi boxes have been proven to increase power by a smeg but you want really get any benefits from it without a big bore kit and a cam and a free flowing exhaust with a jet kit ....I like the A9 cam.......and those factory fuel pumps are unnecessary just bypass it and let it gravity feed

    In TN the moped law is no larger than 49cc in displacement, single gear centrifugal drivetrain, no speed limitation but they don't tend to go over 30 stock unless you are a featherweight anyways.

    In Australia there's a minimum fee on some auctions of $300.
    Salvage auctions are generally $30 or so but yeah. I was looking at a trash car once that I wanted to pay about $250 for and it had a $300 fee. So I needed to get the car for -$50

    50cc's have a kick starter that faces towards the back...150cc's have a kick starter that faces towards the front of the bike. Charles's bike looks like a 150cc. Issac's might be, or the kick lever might be installed wrong, it's hard to tell. John's is just about exactly what I'd expect a stock 50cc to do. slow off the line, will eventually do 30-35 on flat ground.

    Over this side of the pond, the moped class is 49cc and can be ridden by 16 year olds, however you can get automatic motorbikes in any size so 110/125/.../600, just changes the age you can ride it

    On cheap Chinese import mopeds like these, you won't find people modifying them. What you will find is pretty much all the engine mounts are identical. So a 50cc to a 125cc swap is very easy! Here in the UK they're literally scrap, but the more sort after Piaggio stuff Gilera stuff go for good money some with 200/300cc engine swaps on a 125cc frame. My brother has a fully built 172cc Typhoon that's modified from a 125cc.

    Thankfully that max 50cc garbage isn't nation wide. Here in NY there's no Max displacement on Mopeds, Scooters or whatever you want to call them. In NY the term Moped and Scooter are used interchangeably regardless if it has pedals or not.
    From the look of the CVT cover the one Charles has is a 150 👍👍
    @4:04 That's not necessarily true they could have came from out of state as Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia allow for over 50cc.

  • @lakehillmotorsmarine27
    @lakehillmotorsmarine27 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    In lots of other states there is no "moped" law or registration. They are just whatever size they are and you register them like a motorcycle, scooter, or car. A couple of those are 150s

    In Virginia 50cc is a moped, by legality, but a moped actually comes as high as 350cc in the Gy6 format. Key part of a moped is the simplicity of just twist and go. But anything above 50 at the time of registration is considered a motorcycle.

    MoPed. MOtorbike with PEDals. If it don't have both, it ain't one. No other description necessary.

    Here in the UK you're limited on your licence by hp. 16 year olds can ride 50cc 17 year olds can ride 125cc. But I think both are 12hp limited and have to have a CBT which is a basic training day to make sure you're a safe and educated rider.
    Then you need a 2 part motorcycle licence for anything bigger. CBT riders have to ride with 'L' plates too and can't use 'M' roads

      @@lethargicstove2024 yeah it's pretty backwards... In Holland they can ride from 14 I think.. and on the path/cycle lanes. But we're not really limited to speed here like most of the European countries on their 50cc's everyone gets away with derestricting and you're supposed to declare any mods to insurance but no one does 😆

  • @7MPhonemicEnglish

    Every state has different laws regarding mopeds. Usually, no registration or license is required if you're less than 50 or 40 cc (Texas). You must have the option to pedal power your unit for it to qualify as a "moped". If you're over the limits, then you need either a car or motorcycle registration and applicable driver's license.

    in the UK 49cc and under are classed as mopeds and can be rode from 16 yrs of age, over 50cc are classed as scooters and from 17 yrs of age you're able to ride any scooter/motorcycle upto 125cc on a provisional licence after taking a compulsory basic training course
