If ever there was an R.E.M. song that hit close to home it was this song. My grandmother happened to be a Don at Cambridge University most of her academic life and it was during a time when there weren't many women scientists let alone women geneticists. Naturally the university were always trying to undercut the funding for her research so she spent a good portion of her life fighting against the establishment to get the funding for her research. As a result of the way she was treated she suffered from depression for a good portion of her tenured life, much like the subject of this song and my mother never had a proper "female" upbringing as a result. She died when I was 12 but to this day I have great respect for my Grandmother given the adversity she faced as an academic in the 50's and 60's. I admire my mother for continuing to defy the norms of women and carry on the legacy of female scientists in our family. And this song proves how strenuous and difficult the path of academia really can be.
“I started...I juuuuuuuuuuuuuumped up” is maybe my favorite Stipe delivery. Every way he does it in this song. And one of my favorite all-time REM lyrics: “a lazy eye metaphor on the rocks” Brilliant stuff.
i remember they day they did this. it was at ealing studios - jst along the road from my house i was 16, at home all day. my mother came home and told me she'd seen 'the band with the bald man' leaving the studios... i missed it all. still gutted!
I bought this record the week before I was married in the late 90s. I was finishing my PhD at a huge midwestern university and teaching full time. On my wedding night, I played this song over and over, having realized I made a terrible mistake. Holy cow I hate this song.
I like this. Love the good shots of Mike, back when his hair was wonderful golden blond, long and curly. The best. This makes me want to go listen to "Up".
hands up who bought a chronic town cassette not cd also lifes rich paegeant bad bonus was fables apart from driver8,anyways watching that vid thanks for the exellent upload i still dont know what say. beautiful
If they had recorded the *Up* album in this manner (stylistically), it would have been more successful. (Also, if Berry was involved in the demos, which by all accounts he was, why didn't they give him songwriting credit?)
No offense to the others, but it really is Stipe who carries this song. His voice takes on such a dead quality, until it changes for the chorus. Beautiful, but in such an ugly way.
Great, underrated song from a great, underrated album.
I agree. I love the big hits from REM but the real joy comes from.sings like this. Xx
best REM album!
I have all their CDs. UP is my favorite. 🤗

Who’s Afraid Of Virgiinia Woolf is the subject matter

Awesome Rem song! Michael brings the voice and passion!
Another hidden gem.
TBH too many R.E.M. fans shit all over post-Berry songs. But if you can't listen to this and not be moved...your heart needs a hug.
YES
Recently came back to this album and rediscovered this track...hidden classic. Love the ebow. Didn't know Mills played guitar on this either.
Grande banda!!! Álbum excelente
Amazing!!! I LOVE this song!
My favorite music

Biutifull..
Música fantástica!
Olha só, um br
When I met Ken Stringfellow in March 2010 and he asked me what I did for a living, I answered him: "to paraphrase R.E.M., I am a sad professor!"
Oh Dios!!!! Cómo los extraño!!! Este mundo los necesita!!!
Hypnotic …
Sehr schön....

Awesome
I find that I listen to this at the end of particularly trying semesters when I am, indeed, a sad professor.
maravillosos R.e.m
Such a powerful ending chorus.
I like this.

Great. Defo underrated album.
A rare record. In my opinion, it was shown on MTV a long time ago, there were also Lotus and Parakeet. Where can I find the whole live?
@MikeMillsTribute

❤️
And now hes a made character in Dark Souls 3.
Masterchief
F***ing brilliant!
I will upload a small video of Sad Professor soon :)
Thank you for some great uploads over the years
Their best record
Is Mike in an open tuning?

Why after their 2005 tour did they cut loose Ken Stringfellow (or was he involved in the Accelerate album)?
I miss you Zac. Where are you?
i hate myself for hating sad professor! Sorry....thank you REM for all the feelings I didn't think I had
!!!
a meeting in Brazil, how about?
I think r.e.m. talk about me...

All the UP songs were far better live, resembling the muscularity of New Adventures. This is a helluva song.
yeah, actually it was. did you see the second unplugged show they did? that was shameful.
god, stipe's voice was crap for a while there, wasn't it? glad to see it's back.

Awesome. Very underrated tune.
Ruined by drums
no... just no.
maravillosos R.e.m
